Flash Fiction Game

So, for those of you who are unfamiliar with flash fiction, it's a story written with few words but says a whole lot. For the purposes of this game, flash fiction entries should be less than 50 words! A famous (albeit extreme) example of flash fiction, penned by Ernest Hemingway, is, "Baby shoes for sale: never worn." It's been called the six word novel by some. The game rules will follow in the next post.

  • Rules: The person above you will write a flash fiction story. At the end, they will write ONE WORD for the next person to build their story off of. So the next person must take that word and incorporate it somehow into their fiction. 1.) You cannot change the word unless you want to make it plural/singular, or, if it's a verb, make it past/present or whatever. No synonym substitues 2.) You must leave a word for the next person in the chain to build their story form. 3.) You must post original work!!! You cannot go find a story and post it. You have to write it.

  • Rain falls in crosshatch across the lamplit sky, splattering the asphalt ground with splashes of reflected light. I look at the sketchbook in my hand and trace the penciled rain and smudged glow. It was shit. I let to book fly onto the muddy grass and soak up the crosshatch. NEXT PERSON'S WORD: TEA.

  • TEA: It's cold now, I was always told that it's to be hot. A hot murky rainbow of colour, black, brown and green. They tell me it's the same thing but I refuse to listen. I walk away and turn my back, on the blasphemy known as iced TEA. NEXT WORD: CACTUS

  • Bring them a housewarming gift, he said. It’ll go smoothly, he said. I punched his arm on the car ride home, seething with anger and embarrassment. “That whole cactus incident was your fault, Jerry. You’re buying the next gift.” I punched him again when he tried to argue.

  • I was never going to try to impress a girl again. I get it, it’s a masquerade, I can see the masks, but no. Whoever wrote this awful piece of shit clearly thought his audience was full of idiots as the actors continued to sing about their stupid masks. Nope, no girl was worth the torture. Next Word: Soap

  • I never dared to ask my mother; if the words are so dirty, why do they all make my teeth taste like soap? Next Word: Terminal

  • The wink of the semicolon, taunt of the tilde, the question mark that seemed to ask, "well...?" Is there no more effective instrument of torture, he wondered, than the keyboard when someone had writer's block.

  • "No, it's the same as the regular kind," my mom said with a grin that convinced me otherwise. I knew it had to be Kraft's greatest secret, the small spiral macaronis surly containing some secret ingredient that the lovers of regular mac and cheese just couldn't handle. - Next word: Hedgehog

  • I glanced at her, back still turned away. Her person, I liked to think of as a hedgehog. Don't be with others, you turn your back to them and pierce them with the coldness. But patience will prise it open, and the heart is warm and loving indeed. Next word: ersatz ;)

  • The drop into a shallow grave was nothing compared to the fall of my legacy. A crumbling empire was nothing to this man and woman who peered down at me with impassive eyes. I was already a ghost to them, so I closed my eyes and relived my haunting nightmare.

  • I let a small smirk grace my lips as I pointed my imaginary sword at my friend, who was acting as my enemy in the small game. "With this sword, I will strike you down and you shall never see the light again!" I shouted. Ah, How I loved roleplaying~! Next word: Storm

  • Sitting down and glaring intently through the window, a single teardrop from the sky landed itself on the thick glass. A loud clap of thunder, and the clouds began to sob uncontrollably. Whose sadness is this melancholic weeping? Unknown, however to many 'twas but another passing storm.

  • He gazed around the small shop and sighed softly. There was nothing he wanted, so why was he here? Perhaps it was because he was drawn to the slightly harrowing aura that the little 'shop of horrors' gave out. He shook his head and promptly left, not even looking back. Next word: Reek... I hope this was okay? *smiles sheepishly*

  • The sunset was unlike anything he’d ever seen. The other scientists explained that the gasses in the planet’s atmosphere refracted light differently, giving it the strange colors. With breathless awe, Nestor gazed through the research window in pious reverence. It was like he was seeing God for the first time.

  • He glared intently at her limp body, caressing her face with a gentle stroke of the hand. It had never been quite mutual in terms of emotion, but he didn't care. Some called it romance, others called it obsession. Needless to say, he felt different.

"Don't think of it as an even relationship," he whispered, "Just think of it as..."
