The Uncanny
Never heard of it? If you want to be a writer, especially a writer of Suspense, Mystery, and/or Horror, this is a need to know! We're not talking about gratuitous jumpscares that just surprise you for the moment, we're talking about Horrors that Linger! What is it? The Uncanny is a tool used to make up a creepy or unsettling atmosphere in an otherwise normal or safe place. Think of flickering lights in a building, or a very human-like robot with jerky or weird movements or expressions, or that little kid who seems to always be staring in your direction. It's not something that harms the characters, but it's main purpose is to set them - and you, the reader - off and build up tension. What examples can people think of that they've seen in media? Maybe add a link in the comments.

This is the complete demo for P.T Silent Hills. I think it's a great use of the Uncanny in how the player has to travel through the same section of the house over and over, each time with things getting more and more intense. There are some jumpscares, and even ways to die, but it's the constant not-quite-the-same repetition of the levels that really gets to you, like you're walking in limbo.
