A/N: Here we are, my gift to you. Although this is only a temporary one, please let me know what you think all the same. Again, the only reason I will only allow the prologue to be posted is because I am far too busy and love this story too much to post the true version of it. The story itself can be read separate from the prologue, so if you haven't read the prologue, it's okay (though you may have missed a few major plot points). This true story is T-rated as opposed to the prologue's M-rating, so don't worry about anything you might expect after reading the prologue. Anyways, enjoy this gift from me and remember: it will only be up until 1/3/15, so please use this chance! Read, review, and PM me for requests to post the true story if you like it!
~~~WakeUpCall~~~
“Master, it is time for you to wake up! There is so much to do today, you must not forget your duties to Miss Lucia now.” A maid tells me.
“Oh right...her. Thank you for waking me up, you may excuse yourself now.”
“As you wish, master.”
The maid briskly walked out of my room, barely making a sound as she looked back at me with a smile. As soon as I heard that name, I knew my day was going to be tiresome. Lucia, the daughter of Lucifer himself and a very influential noble among mortals like myself. Although demons had recently 'denounced their old ways', they still frighten me when I attend various functions. A month after my experiment succeeded, various high-class demons burst forth from Hell and approached the United Nations with the intent of coexistence. Another month passed until both the human and demon leaders agreed that everyone could benefit from coexistence and so the 'Demonic Mutualism Pact' was passed. Strictly speaking, it was meant to be a trade agreement between our species, but as time passed it became a way for humans and demons to intermingle in society.
Most of the demons are part of the upper-class, so it's not uncommon for me to see them in my everyday life. Lucia, being Lucifer's daughter, is part of the most powerful demonic family in existence. I've known her for many years, ever since our childhood where I mistook her for a human before I learned of her heritage. She was the one who helped me in moving Tienge and Shion between rooms while I conducted my experiment in transforming them. Without her, my work would have taken at least 10 more years to finish, so I am very grateful to her. However, when I told her that she could visit me anytime, I didn't expect to be seeing her almost everyday.
I get out of bed and stretch before going to my wardrobe to get dressed for my meeting with Lucia. She is a close friend, so I know that she won't mind if I wear something a little informal in front of her. I feel like wearing the usual clothes today, so I grab a white dress shirt, a light blue tie, gray dress pants, and my personal suit jacket with the House Animus emblem sewn onto the upper sleeves. I set them out on a mannequin in my room and undress to my shorts before grabbing my towel and walking down the hall to the nearest shower.
Many of the mansion's servants and staff pass me by, giving me some words of encouragement about the meeting with Lucia and reminding me that breakfast was ready at the usual time of 9:00 AM. I am glad that the servants are so helpful to me and I make sure to treat them with respect as human beings, not puppets. I make it a point to tell the servants I see that if I am late to breakfast, they may start their own breakfast and I would join them in the dining room. As usual, they insisted that they wouldn't dare to start without me, but I won't have any of that since they deserve to have the same level of freedom as I do. Several of them kneel to me and graciously thank me for being such a kind and noble master, making me feel uncomfortable in the process. I tell them that a master is only judged by the way he treats his servants and that they aren't like servants to me at all, more like my family. That remark sends them over the edge as they cling to me and praise me with such force, I can barely move. The fact that I only have my shorts on makes this even more awkward since I still haven't taken my morning shower yet. Not wanting to waste anymore time, I politely tell them to let go of me and I quickly walk to the shower.
~~~InsertShowerSceneHere~~~
“Oh hey! What's up, Starr?”
“Good morning Dante, I've been better. What about you?” I greeted my head of staff.
“Eh, same as always, that maid is still a massive prude. I heard Lucia's here again today, you excited?”
“Excited? For what?” This was obviously another scheme by Dante.
“You know, those devils can be pretty...passionate, and she is real friendly with you...”
“W-What!? I would never do that with her, never! She's just a close family friend and you know it!”
“Yeah, but she only asks to see you, so what do you think that means?” He narrowed his eyes.
“She and I do much of our work together, so it's a given that she wants to see me first.”
“So what about all those times when she showed up out of nowhere, precisely where you were at that moment?”
“Th-That's-!”
“Admit it, she digs you and you like her as well.” Dante said, sounding triumphant.
“...Fine, you win. I do like her, but I can't tell her because it's...embarrassing. I mean what was father thinking by asking Lucifer if I could marry his daughter? The fact that Lucifer actually agreed was an even bigger shock! You're so lucky, Dante, you have nothing to worry about at all over here.” I was jealous of his freedom and care-free life.
“Well, I still haven't gotten that maid, so I wouldn't say I'm worry-free.”
“Whatever, we're here for a shower, right?”
“Of course, let's get on with it.” He smiled.
We both shower in silence, having nothing in particular to talk about. It is still weighing on my mind, what Dante said about me and Lucia being attracted to each other. I've known her since childhood, when her parents would bring her to the mansion to visit us. She is more like a sister to me than anything, so it would be improper for me to think of her as a potential suitor. However, the fact that she is interested in me is too strange. It's impossible for her to like me because she is only interested in other demons. She told me once that it is a long-standing tradition of the House of Lucifer to only marry other devil-class demons to keep the bloodline pure.
~~~BreakfastTime~~~
Sighing to myself, I quickly finish my shower and leave as Dante is slowly taking his time. After returning to my room and dressing myself, I enter the hallway once again. I walk through the mansion to the dining room, where all of the staff on the grounds are engaged in a rather noisy breakfast. All 50 of the seats at the table were filled, so additional seats have been brought out as well as spare tables. I make it a point to let all of my staff members eat meals together, and this morning isn't any different. Everyone is more or less unaware of my entrance, but I don't mind since I don't generally enjoy making big entrances.
Passing my gaze over the whole scene, a flash of orange caught my eye followed by a small silver sheen. With a slight roar, Tienge calls me over to her table at the far end of the dining room. Shion is seated with her as well at an otherwise empty table. I push past all of my dining servants and take a seat across from Tienge, Shion sitting to her left.
“Good morning you two, how's breakfast?” I ask casually.
“We haven't had anything yet, we were waiting for you. Took your sweet time I see.” Tienge plainly answers.
“Heh, I was talking to Dante for a bit before we showered. I'm sure he'll be joining us soon.”
“Ugh, that guy creeps me out the way he sniffs around for that maid. Can't you pick someone else as head of staff?” Tienge truly loathes Dante and today is no different.
“Sorry, but he is the best-suited for the job. You might only know the creepy side of him, but when he takes his job seriously, he's far better than anyone else I could've hired.”
“The Master is correct. Sir Dante has the best qualities to command leadership from all of the staff members.” Shion comments.
“Why are you taking his side so easily? Did you forget what happened to us a year ago?”
“He gave us a home and jobs after we faced our terrible ordeal, so that we would not have to struggle like we might have after we were left in the streets. Master also treats the servants like his own family, including ourselves.”
“I get that, but I was hoping we would've caught the asshole who raped us and turned us into these 'things'...” Tienge presses on, sending a sharp glare in my direction as I stay completely stoic.
“...I still hold feelings of hatred towards our attacker, but I am willing to move on from the incident. I also don't mind my new body at all. Taking care of my wolf ears and tail feels good, especially since I brush them often. I think what Master did for us was very admirable, given our circumstances.”
“I still hate this tiger body, even if I felt good at one point. The ears are so sensitive sometimes and the tail just gets stepped on by everything imaginable. What I would do to the bastard that did this to me...” Tienge gives a bloodthirsty stare as she raises her fist in the air.
~~~EatingTime~~~
We have a full breakfast of eggs, bacon, waffles, and oranges just like everyone else in the room. Shion and I eat slowly and quietly while Tienge stuffs her face with food, barely stopping to swallow.
“Man, this food is so good! If there's one good thing I can say about this whole deal, it's gotta be the delicious food!” She says while spilling some bits of food back onto her plate.
“Tienge, it's both rude and unsightly to talk with your mouth full. Please try to enjoy the food in silence like Master and I are.” Shion flatly tells her.
“Leave her be, Shion, if she didn't learn after a month of warnings, she won't ever. You have to agree with her though, the food made by the kitchen is quite flavorful, no matter what it may be.”
“I know right, the coffee's just as nice too!” Dante's voice cuts in as he sits next to me with a cup of coffee.
“Oh...it's you. Suddenly the food doesn't taste so great anymore...” Tienge's mood deflates.
“Quit it with that, I haven't done anything to you, you crazy tiger. Besides little Master here wouldn't get anything done with me around; especially in making sure you're satisf-”
“I request that you refrain from pursuing that topic further, for everyone's sake, Sir.” Shion interrupts.
“Whatever.” He waves it off, focusing on his relaxation at the moment.
With that, Dante continues to sip his coffee. Tienge looks with irritation as she tries to get back into the happy mood she had before while Shion and I quietly finish our breakfast as usual. Of course, we finish first and take our leave of Tienge and Dante while I head to my meeting with Lucia. We walk down the hallway in silence, stopping once we reach the path leading off to the library, where Shion works.
“This is where we must part. Good luck on your research today Shion. I hope you will come to learn more about the world as you read today.” I say as I turn to go on to my meeting.
I take barely a step before I feel Shion's hand gripping my coat.
“What's wrong? Do you need to request rare books or maybe some hidden texts?”
“No, it's not that Master. I...want to accompany you to this meeting with Lady Lucia.”
“But you have so much work to do today. Surely there's a number of things you wanted to research today.”
“You are correct, but I want to learn more about the demons as nobles and I feel that this is the best way to experience that.”
“Fine, you may come with me, but please try not to do anything that may upset Lucia in the least. She will be focused on me, but you must still be polite, no matter what she may say to you.”
“Yes Master.”
~~~AGuestAtTheMeeting~~~
A/N: So, figure what kind of characters Tienge and Shion are? If not, they are a tiger-girl and wolf-girl, respectively. I'm serious when I say that the concept for this story actually came to me through a series of dreams; weird, right? It doesn't follow the dreams perfectly, but I tried to recreate them at least 80% from what I remember. Read, review and all that. Just let me know whether I should keep these up from now on.
2: Meeting with Love?A/N: Chapter 2 of my two-part Christmas gift to you all! Things get a bit more interesting here (as if things weren't interesting before) because we finally move on to the meeting with Lucia and unexpectedly, Shion has decided to join Starr to observe. The only thing wrong with this is Lucia's maid/best friend, who'll have more than enough words for Shion. Let's get on with, shall we? Remember to PM me if you want this full story to be posted and I'll see what I can do with it.
~~~TheMeetingIsHere~~~
Five minutes later, we walk out of the mansion and take our seats at the front yard patio set, where a seated blonde woman and a standing maid with light blue hair wearing a cat-eared headband are waiting.
“Lucia, good morning. I see you've surprised me yet again with this visit. Did you even try to stop her, May?” I ask, looking at the blue-haired maid.
“I-I'm sorry, Starr, I told her that it wouldn't be good to visit twice in one week, but she can be so forceful sometimes. Please don't hold it against me...” May pleads as the ears on her headband droop while she gives me a deep bow.
“May, please, you only wanted to get away from Dante, didn't you?” Lucia accuses from her seat, adjusting her red dress as she sets her gaze on me.
“...That man creeps me out. By the way Starr, is Tienge around?”
“She's currently engaged in breakfast with Dante as we speak. It shouldn't be too long until she resumes her work in the training room.”
“Thank you, Starr. I'll be sure to come by later when Lady Lucia relieves me of my duties.”
“How many times have I reminded you that it is not necessary to call me by my title? Just calling me by my name is acceptable.”
“Apologies, milady.” May gives another bow, resuming her observation of the meeting and giving a small hiss to Shion sitting next to me.
“Lady Lucia, I believe there is an important matter you wish to discuss with my Master?” Shion softly asks.
“Ah, of course. We should begin the discussion before we get carried away with pleasantries. Starr, there is a function being held three days from now at House Lyre. I would like you to be my escort to it.”
“You request for my service each time there is a function held and I tell you the same answer for each one. Why would this one be any different?”
“Each guest at this function is allowed to bring three servants of choice. I know how much you prefer the company of others, so I decided to bring it to your attention.”
“Hmm...this does sound like it could be enjoyable.” Shion quietly comments.
“Agreed, but I will have to inform the others so that they can prepare for the event.”, I add before turning towards Lucia, “Thank you my friend, for informing me of this rare opportunity to let my staff experience the finer points of nobility.” I smile warmly at her, causing her to flush slightly and return a smile of her own.
“Master, I must ask, who is this false cat-girl who seems to direct such animosity towards me?” Shion calmly fixes an indifferent stare at May, who hisses in response.
“Ah, I forgot that this is your first time meeting her. Her name is May, and she is the head maid of Lucia's home. The reason she projects such random hatred towards you is because for some odd reason, she dislikes dogs of any kind.
“Cats and dogs are mortal enemies and that goes for wolves too!” May hissed.
“...Woof.” Shion blankly teases her.
“Mreow!” May lets out an angry meow as she pretends to claw at Shion, who raises her hands up like a dog.
The two go back and forth for a while as Lucia and I watch the trade and laugh together at the amusing sight.
~~~CatFightWolfFightWordFight~~~
“It's almost 11, which means I must take my leave. It was a pleasure to see you again, Starr, and I hope I can expect you to accept my offer before the party. I would love to share a dance with you, Dr. Animus. Come May, we have to get back to the manor before everyone realizes we are missing. It was nice to meet you, Shion, I hope you learn plenty more about the world as an intellectual and even more about your new form. Please give Miss Tienge my regards as well.” With that, Lucia and May walk to the front gates where their car is parked.
After I wave them off, I rejoin Shion who is still seated at the patio. She asks me an interesting question that proved to me her vast knowledge of demonology and social interaction.
“Master, how does Lady Lucia know of my name and my research as well? I made sure to leave all of my research materials in the library and I only observed as you instructed. I also noticed that you never once used my name in the conversation, so the only logical explanation is that Lady Lucia possesses some form of psychic power inherit within all devil-class demons...”
“Not to disappoint you, but although she does possess a vast array of psychic powers, Lucia did not at all use them in the meeting. She knows of your name most likely from May talking to Tienge all the time; at some point, Tienge would have mentioned your name and species, given your friendship with her.” I explain, careful not to mention my involvement in the incident that transformed the two girls.
“I see. That would make sense given May's fondness of cats and her desire to be a cat-girl.”
“You learned all that just from 'fighting' with her?”
“Yes, it seems obvious that she likes cats based on her reaction upon seeing me and the fact that the ears on her headband move according to her emotions is a strong indicator that she wishes to become a cat-girl like Tienge. These two facts make it certain that she would want to see Tienge most of all since that is the form she hopes to attain. But this is all purely theory that cannot be proven unless I can verify it with Tienge.” Shion dismisses it.
“...That's amazing. Everything you said was true and you learned all of it just from your first meeting with May. You must have been improving your reasoning skills immensely in your research. (It's grown far greater than my initial calculations led me to believe.) I feel that a reward is order for showing me such impressive insight. Whatever you desire, Shion, I'll do what I can to grant it.” I beam at her, feeling pride swell up in me.
“...There is one thing I've always wanted from you, Master...” She tells me, avoiding my eyes.
“What is it? A book, a date, some time off? I don't mind what it is at all.” I assure her.
“I-It's a little embarrassing, so could you...close your eyes, Master?” Shion nervously asks.
“Okay.” I close my eyes and wait for a few long minutes before I feel someone's breath hovering close to my mouth. I feel a hand on top of mine pressing against my lap as a body does the same while I calmly sit facing Shion.
“You may open your eyes now Master.”
I open my eyes and Shion's face fills my vision as she is mere inches away from my face. I can feel her heavy breathing against my lips and her body is pressed against mine, her arms wrapping around my waist. I look down at her gentle brown eyes and feel my face flush instantly when I notice the deep red decorating her cheeks. Our lips are only centimeters away that the slightest touch could cause them to meet. I try to speak softly, not wanting to make this anymore of a lustful mood.
~~~AKiss?~~~
“Shion, is this what you wanted?”
“I've...wanted to get this close to you...but I want to let you decide...what happens next...”
“How long have you felt this way?”
“Ever since you took us in and introduced me to the library and all the times you would come visit me as I did my research. You were the one person who understood me and my work. I was grateful because you gave me the education I could never have...”
“Do you want...more education?”
“Y-Yes...”
I close the distance and press my lips against hers, finishing the kiss she started. We close our eyes and lose ourselves in the warmth spreading between us. She hugs me tighter and I do the same, wrapping my arms around her small frame. Her tongue begs for entrance, but I don't allow it, wanting to tease her a little more. Shion continues to push her tongue at the threshold of my mouth, pleading me let herself experience the full passion of this kiss. Finally after a few precious seconds, I allow Shion to enter my mouth, feeling her tongue greedily exploring and familiarizing itself with my own tongue. I change the feeling in our mouths and shift my tongue into her mouth, all while the kiss was still deepening. We stay like that, just sharing this kiss, Shion's breasts pressing against me as I feel her body growing hot from our intimacy. She rubs against me in a needy way, giving more than enough of a hint to what she wants from me.
Unfortunately this is as far as I am willing to go, so in a slow purposeful manner, I break the kiss. Shion looks at me with longing in her eyes and moves in for another kiss, but I hold her back with my hand on her breast.
“I can't do this Shion, I just don't feel right doing this with you. I shouldn't get any closer to you than this.”
“Master...why? I don't feel this way around anyone else but you. You are the only one I want to do this with, so why won't you accept me?” She was on the verge of tears now, watching my movements for any sign that I might return her feelings.
“I do accept your feelings, and I feel the same way about you. However, you have your research and I have my own work to be done, and in time you may find someone better than me as you learn about the world. As your Master, it wouldn't be my place to dictate who you should love. I thought I'd made it clear to everyone that they are free to marry whom they please. I want you to find someone else, because I don't deserve to be with you.” I sullenly respond.
“...If that is what you wish, Master, then I cannot argue. Can you please grant me one more request?” Shion asks while fighting back her tears.
“Of course, what will it be?”
“Could you please...hold me, Master, hold me like you love me?” She lets her tears flow down her cheeks, both happy that she kissed me, but sad that I can't be together with her.
“Gladly, my precious wolf-girl.” I whisper into her ear as I embrace her warmly.
~~~MyPrecious~~~
A/N: Hoo! Things escalated quickly between the Master and the librarian! She's so cute, how could he not love her? Simple, he has a dark secret *Prologue* that stops him from ever loving the animal girls he so adores in his home. Thank you all for using the chance I gave you to read this dream-inspired story of mine and please review and PM me if you'd like this to stay on FictionPress, otherwise I'll continue working on it and then you'll have to wait A LONG WHILE until it is done, then I'll post the full story. Please don't wait that long unless you're a masochist, but even then it seems a bit...far. This chapter and the last will be removed on 1/3/15, so don't forget to PM me what you think and use this chance to read!
3: Winter's BreathA/N: "IT'S ALIIIIVE!" Ahem, crazed yelling aside, it's true. The House of Animus is still standing and will become a permanent story here. Special thanks to Rosalind Stone for nudging the delicate decision to keep this story on FictionPress. Then, again I planned from the very beginning to keep this story on, but I just wanted to see how many of you liked it. 'It amused me' to put it in a phrase. Now, this chapter will focus on the kitchen staff of the Animus Mansion, and...they're 'fun' to say the least.
~~~NoLemonSorry~~~
An hour later, at noon, I set Shion's sleeping form on the sofa in the library, surrounded by all of her research material. I stand in wonder at how much life she put into the place ever since I introduced it to her after the experiment was finished. I had long outgrown using my family's library since I became a doctor of biological science when I was 18. I had all the knowledge I needed for my experiment on Tienge and Shion, so I rarely ever used the library. Once Shion was given her job as the librarian, however, everything changed in this simple little room. Books would continuously be taken out and replaced, many of the old shelves have been dusted, this sofa was added for comfort, and hundreds of new books were requested, so I had to add new shelves to the library. I have also come by more frequently to check up on Shion, but she always has everything under control. The first time I visited her in here, only the next day after she moved in, I already felt the intense atmosphere of possession that this was solely her domain.
Smiling as I walk out to let Shion rest, I head to the dining room to have a light lunch before my next activity for the day. Normally I would give my order to a serving maid or butler, but today I want to give my order personally, so I walk through the dining room and head into the kitchen, where the three members of the kitchen staff happily greet me. Even though the mansion has dozens of people living in it, these three are all I need in the kitchen because they are all from a family of master chefs who can perform all of the kitchen duties with ease.
“Hello Master! What brings you in here?” The elder sister, Miranda, chirps.
“Yeah, whatever you need, we'll make it!” Her brother, Royce, adds.
“I hope we can make you happy again like always!” Their younger brother, Thomas, cheers.
“Yes yes, don't worry, I know you three are excited to cook, but I didn't exactly come here for that. I've been wondering about Tienge's diet: have you three been making the right kinds of food for her?”
“Of course we have, and she's been exercising too, so she's in top form all the time.” Miranda assures me as she motions for her brothers to start preparing dishes for the servants' lunch later on.
“I don't need to remind you that she needs more vegetables in her diet, but I would recommend a little more dairy for her from now on.”
“Sure thing boss, we'll take care of her like always.” Royce calls out.
“I have a question sir: Why did you want us to focus on feeding Tienge and Shion so much? Their diet is pretty normal like everyone else.”
“A good question you're asking, Thomas. They act like normal girls, but you must remember that they are half-animals, so they will probably have a larger diet compared to humans. I mean, demons and humans eat many different things, so the same would work with Tienge and Shion.”
“We'll be sure to update their diets just the same. Was there something specific you wanted for lunch, Master?” Miranda asks me.
“Hmm...what new dish have you three been working on?”
“Ah, we think you'll be very impressed with it. Thomas, can you bring Master a slice of the new dessert?”
“Here you go Master, our new cheesecake recipe!” He holds an unassuming plate of cheesecake out to me, handing me a fork as he does so.
“I wonder what new flavor you three have come up with.”, I say aloud as I hold a small piece near my mouth, “It's no doubt going to be a huge success with the rest of the staff. I'm grateful for you three being here, despite all of the work that has to be done. You can always take some time off when you need to, I can have someone cover for you three if you need a vacation.” I smell the minty aroma from the piece I'm holding it in my fork and put it in my mouth.
“No way Master, we don't anyone else touching our kitchen! This is our baby and we need to be with her at all times, no matter what! But there is something we've always...wan-ted?” Royce pauses as he sees the stunned state I am in.
~~~DeliciousCheesecake~~~
The cheesecake is...indescribably delicious. To say it is heavenly would do it no justice; To say it is the stuff of legends is an understatement. It gives me the feeling of a cool gentle breeze in my mouth, following with a cold softness like snow, until I feel the sensation of kissing someone in an elegant winter scenery. I just stare at the remainder of the slice before greedily eating piece after piece until it is no more. Nothing could describe how I was feeling about the cheesecake except for my widest grin that seemed to brighten the entire kitchen.
“You three...you...I love you guys.” I shout as loud as I can without losing my calm, bringing the three siblings into a group hug.
“We love you too Master. We're all proud to be part of your family.” Miranda responds.
“If you hadn't taken us in, who knows where we might have ended up.” Royce reminds me.
“Yes, it's thanks to you that we have a home and a family to wake up to everyday. We love working here, that's why we don't wanna leave. This is our favorite place in the whole world!” Thomas exclaims.
“I have to ask: what was cheesecake that I just ate? It was unlike anything I've ever tried before...” I muse as Royce's face is absolutely ecstatic.
“That, my friend, was my very own creation: the Winter's Breath cheesecake. It's a blend of peppermint and cinnamon with a hint of cherry for the perfect flavor which I'm sure you enjoyed.”
“This may be your greatest recipe to date! Please, will you serve it for dessert tonight? I'm asking you, Royce, as a friend.” I give an expectant look to the young man before me.
“As much as I'd like to have everyone else try it, I can't put it on the menu tonight. However, we have a favor to ask, Master.” He asks with hesitation in his voice.
“What is it? I'll gladly repay you for letting me experience such a wonderful dessert.”
“Could you...find a tutor for us?”
“Say again?”
“A tutor. We want to learn how to make demon dishes, since we've never made them before, and we want to be able to impress Lady Lucia the next time she comes for dinner. Please could you find someone who is willing to teach us how to please demons in the dining room?”
“...It will be difficult, but I will do whatever I can to find the perfect tutor for you three.” I promise them.
“Thank you Master, we're forever in your debt.”
“Oh ho, no need for that. I'm only doing what any other family would do, so there's no need for such words of praise.” I conclude the conversation as I exit the kitchen and leave them to their work.
~~~MasterNiceGuy~~~
A/N: Oh, how I love cheesecake...it's my favorite kind of dessert. Winter's Breath is a completely made-up flavor I thought of on the spot, so I have no idea if it's real, but it sounds delicious. I also have pictures of the characters for those of you who can't quite imagine them, so PM me if you'd like to take a look! Thanks again, Rosalind Stone, for tipping the balance in favor of keeping the story on FictionPress!
4: The Tiger of AnimusA/N: Preemptive Strike! It's a week (or so) early, but I figured two weeks is a long time to wait, so here it is. Just another day in the life of Dr. Animus, nothing special really, except for the appearance of a new (and quite open) girl on the grounds. Enjoy!
~~~Roar~~~
“You're late, you know that?” Tienge asks me impatiently.
“Yes, I'm aware of it. Even still, there is plenty of time for our session today. I hope you've improved since last time?”
“Damn right! This time I'll put you through hell and back, so there's no way you can beat me.”
“We'll see. Shall we begin?” I taunt her gently as I step into the spacious training room.
At 12:30 PM everyday, I come here to train with Tienge to improve my fitness. Most of the time she has to think of increasingly difficult workouts that would even put Olympians to shame, but I complete them with ease nonetheless. In return for her workouts, I teach Tienge various fighting styles upon request.
“Alright, today we're starting out with 200 push-ups, 300 crunches, and a two-mile jog for warm-ups. Ready to lose, Master?” Tienge smiles, hoping that she will finally beat me in the workout today.
“How about a wager then? Whoever loses must do one favor for the winner, no matter what that may be.”
“Fine by me, but are you sure you'll win this time? I've got just the favor I need from you when you lose...” A dark look comes across Tienge's face. I remain unfazed as I just blink away all the doubt in my mind and focus on winning our wager.
We start right away, Tienge and I easily tied with each other in speed. The push-ups are finished in 10 minutes, the crunches in another 10, with the jog only taking 15 minutes. The main part of the workout is strength training, which Tienge obviously stacked against me, knowing my weakness in physical strength. Even so, lifting 200 pounds in sets of 30 is no challenge for me and even simpler for Tienge. After 10 sets, we run through the grounds for two miles, which make for 10 laps. On one of the laps, I spot May coming through the gates and walking to the house, no doubt looking to hang out with Tienge. A few laps later, I catch the sight of black fur followed by ears, a tail, and a purple streak on my room's balcony. On the next pass I focus my attention to the black mass; it's another cat-girl. I did not make this one, so it must be something else.
However, I cannot get too distracted or else Tienge will overtake me, so I dash ahead of her as she is just beginning to overtake me. Upon a closer inspection, the girl is wearing a traditional Japanese robe, a yukata it seems, purple in color with a scattered-flower design. Just as she comes into full view, her eyes slowly open and she tracks me with her crimson orbs like a predator.
~~~CuteGirlSpotted~~~
“Hey, you're falling behind back there! Ready to be my slave for the day?” Tienge taunts as she passes me.
“Not going to happen, especially since you'll be my pet like you want to be.” I catch up to her and slowly overtake her lead.
“...Grr, you're going to get it, you asshole!” Tienge sprints faster and faster, building on the strain her body must be enduring, all to finally beat me today in our workout.
“Who are you talking to?” A soft voice comes in between us.
“Obviously the guy who owns this whole place.”
“Oh, I see. He's quite handsome, do you like him-nya?” The voice mews.
“W-W-What are you s-s-saying!? T-There's no way I l-l-like that jerk! Wait a minute...'nya'?” Tienge stops in her tracks and looks to her left at the owner of the voice. I do the same as soon as I'm about to pass them.
The cat-girl is tilting her head to the side in a questioning motion, her tail wagging playfully from side to side. Tienge is standing wide-eyed at this new kind of visitor to the Animus Mansion as she looks to me, but I am just as confused as she is. I have never heard of another cat-girl in Europe aside from Tienge and I'm the one that created her. This new cat-girl must be from another scientist, most likely one of my rivals.
“Um...who might you be, miss?” I hesitantly ask.
“Watashi wa Nimura-nyan desu.” She introduces herself in Japanese.
Luckily, I have dealt with wealthy Japanese in the past and picked up a decent understanding of the language.
“Where are you from, Nimura-san?” I ask her at an easy pace to follow.
“Nihon, goshuujinsama.”
“Ah, that explains why you are speaking Japanese.” I look to Tienge, who seems to be glaring at me, “Tienge, could we hold off on this little competition until tomorrow? You can have the win if you don't wish to wait, but I need you to bring Dante, Shion, May, and Lucia into the my study. See if you can find out where Dana is also and-”
“Hell no.”
“Pardon?”
“I said no! I'm not going to accept this at all! I was supposed to beat you fair and square today, new girl or not, I wanted to finally prove myself to you...I wanted to prove that I can stand by your side.” Tienge's hair falls over her face as she looks at the ground. Nimura bounds away as Tienge starts trembling and I can only watch as my dear friend tears herself apart over me.
~~~OhNo~~~
“Tienge, if you want to prove yourself that badly, let's finish this run. I won't hold back at all, so you had better push yourself harder than ever if you want your wish to come true.” I say to her, carefully trying to rekindle her fierce competitive spirit.
I place my hand on her head, gently brushing her ears with my fingers as they fold and swivel in response to my touch. Tienge smiles up at me, no doubt happy that I am willing to forget about everything else and focus my attention on her. With a low growl, she hops away from me and lowers herself on all-fours as my eyes grow wide at the extreme speed she resumes the race at. I rush into my usual pace before quickly sprinting to catch up to Tienge. Never had I expected such a development before in my experiment notes: in only a year, Tienge is able to perfectly mimic a tiger's pouncing stride with an unbelievable gain in speed. Normal humans would find the movements awkward, but Tienge seems to perfectly modify it to work for her and the results are staggering.
Time to bring out my best motions. Tienge, you impress me, but I've been preparing for this and anything else you might throw at me.
Digging deep into my mind, I begin thinking thoughts of pure power and raw anger just enough to draw out the reserve of magical energy I had sealed away for special occasions. In seconds, a ghostly voice comes into my ears.
“Ahh, the Master calls upon me once again. To what end do you desire my power?”
“I need to win the remainder of a footrace with Tienge.”
“Her? Has she surprised you yet again? Very well, as the Master asks. Another day goes unspent as another life is saved.” Silence fills the air now as I feel a slight scratching in my head, and my legs feel crushed.
“Not too much, demon, only about 1% is all I need.”
With the new strength flowing into my legs, I bound ahead and reach Tienge on the other end of the mansion grounds in a few minutes. She is not surprised, knowing all about the unknown burst of speed I can call on whenever I fall behind her pace. Even so, this prompts her to move even faster, so fast that I can barely see the motion of her arms and legs working together. She really is the more unpredictable of the two...and the more interesting.
~~~QuiteInteresting~~~
As much as I enjoy this game of watching Tienge push herself far beyond the speed of normal humans, I rush ahead with all of the power I gathered and finish the race one one lap ahead of Tienge. I take a victory lap at three-quarter speed and receive a predatory glare from Tienge as she passes me. Within the next three minutes, I complete the extra lap and reunite with Tienge, who is sitting on the grass in the backyard in an agitated state.
“Y-You bastard...you went easy on me, didn't you?” She hisses as I sit down next to her.
“Mm...no, I did my best as always. You simply got better over-”
“Bullshit! You were holding back that burst of speed you have like you always do! Why don't you ever face me with everything you've got!? I ask for a challenge, but all you give me is a warm-up! It's not just working out, it's everything with you! The way you talk to me, how you just jump at the chance to see Shion, the way you never seem to look my way...”, Tienge's ears droop as she tilts her head to the ground, “Tell me, Master, why can't you ever be serious with me? I want to know what I have to aim for, but you never show your true self to me. Am I really not worth your time, after everything we've done together?”
A single tear falls as she continues to stare indignantly at the ground.
“...That not it at all, Tienge. You are worth more to me than anyone else in the world. However, if I showed you what I am really like, then you would see why I have to keep you in the dark like this.” I tell her nothing but the truth except for the reason why she and Shion are the way they are.
I gently wrap my arms around her, resting my head on her shoulder. She does not resist my embrace, rather she does the same as I do and pulls me closer to her. Her tail sweeps back and forth in a slow, rhythmic movement that is the only hint of her feelings at this moment. I smile slightly after realizing Tienge's plight once again, suppressing the growing sadness in me after knowing these girls for only a year.
~~~ADarkSecret~~~
A/N: Oh boy...Tienge is going to be suuuuuch a good character in this story! If some of you did not understand the conversation between Starr and Nimura, it basically gave some background info on her. Her name is Nimura and she's a cat-girl from Japan, that's all. Please review, fav, follow, all that good stuff and be ready for the next chapter to be released...soon. (Nice save! Go me!)
5: That One Maid, That One LoveA/N: Surprise! The first part of my gift to you all! It's a bit early since my birthday is in 6 days, but I can't that long for you guys! So, here's the next chapter The House of Animus. This is only one chapter in my two-chapter present for this story, so be sure to finish this one up quick before reading the next one. As I said before on my profile updates, I will be posting a number of early chapters as part of my birthday celebration. I will also set up a poll soon to determine the end of this story since even that was not revealed to me in my dreams. Thanks for all the support for this story, please leave a review or two and PM me if you want some insider information on the story!
~~~TrainingDone~~~
“I'll see you tonight, Tienge. Until then, be sure to take a few breaks during your self-training; I don't want you to push yourself too hard for the sake of beating me. The bet still counts tomorrow, so don't think you can miss out on it!” I say as we walk back to the training room.
“Don't worry about me, Master, I'll take one break just because you asked. Tomorrow, you'll be mine whether you like it or not!” She winks at me, grinning with sharp teeth as she parts from me down the hallway to the training room.
“That's exactly why I worry about you, Tienge.” I whisper silently once she is out of sight.
I look at my watch for a brisk moment. '2:00 PM' it reads, marking the start of the only changing part of my daily routine. From 2:00 PM until 7:00 PM is my free time everyday, open to whatever may happen to cross my path at any moment. Normally I would be in my study working, but seeing as how I accepted Lucia's offer to join her at House Lyre's function, the best course of action is to gather everyone on the grounds to make the announcement. However, that could be done at a moment's notice if I simply inform Dante about it.
“Excuse me, Samuel, but could get me list of everyone who has free time at the moment?” I ask a passing butler.
“Of course sir, it will be done shortly. Is there anything you would like? A drink maybe?” He asks me, raising an eyebrow as well as a smirk on his aged face.
“Hmm...very tempting, Samuel. You know me all too well.” I smile at him as his eyes sparkle with a glint of youth.
“It would only be so, sir. I am grateful to your parents for letting me raise you in their place. They were very kind people, and dear friends.” Samuel speaks softly, careful not to rupture my delicate emotion state.
“That they were, Samuel. If only I had known that side of them sooner...”, my mood saddens slightly, but I repress the feelings before continuing, “The Animus family's 1975 mix then? And feel free to have a drink yourself, Samuel; Mother and Father would have liked to see you relaxing at your age.”
“Right away sir, but I will continue to serve nonetheless; it is the least I could do...for your parents' sake.” He bows deeply to me before awaiting my next response.
“Very well. Carry on, Samuel.” I dismiss him to the duties I assigned to him.
~~~SomeoneIsWatching~~~
My attention turns to an unsuspecting corner ahead of my path. I do not need my inner demon to tell me that there is a presence there, nor do I even need to listen for softly-held breathing; it is always there, no matter how much I would like for it to be elsewhere. I have known this fact since I was a child, and have since learned to rely on it as much as it relies on me.
“You can come out, you know. I wanted to talk to you as soon as Samuel left.” I ease into the casual tone that I often use with this certain person.
“Jeez, you two can sure talk! I was so getting bored over there, I almost fell asleep. So what did you wanna talk about?” A maid, about my age (23), suddenly appears from around the corner of the hallway and walks towards me, giving me a wide grin as she brings her face very close to mine.
“How much have you been listening in on me today?” I ask her plainly as I back away.
“Hmm...I've got everything from your meeting with Lucia to that new recipe you tried in the kitchen. After that, I decided I had enough information on your day.” She smirks as she explains with a certain playfulness in her soft voice.
“Excellent, because that's what I need you for. I need you to spread the specifics of the Lyres' function to the rest of the staff, especially to Dante; I need everyone to be aware of it. You may use any means necessary to get the message across to everyone before noon tomorrow. Can you handle it?”
“Tch, 'handle it'? I can get this done in the next five minutes! The real question is...am I invited?” She winks cutely at me, moving ever-closer to me.
“That depends on you being free at the moment.” I stand firm, unaffected by her attempts to charm me.
“Hmm...if you say, 'I love you, Mira. Please marry me!', then I'll do whatever you want~.” Mira grabs my hand in both of hers and gives it a soft squeeze, her eyes sparkling with small hope. I look at her with loving eyes in response.
“I love you, Mira.”, I say in a stern tone, causing her eyes to widen with excitement, “But I won't marry you.” Her face turns sour in an instant as she playfully hits me in the arm.
“Come on! You were so close to saying it! Why do you always have to mess around with my feelings, Starr? You know I really am in love with you...” She pouts, crossing her arms in a small display of hurt.
“How long has it been since you told me? Five years? Ten?” I ask warmly.
“Fifteen years, on the day you take me to our special spot every year.” She stresses how that spot belongs to both of us and I make no point to disagree with her on it, since I was the one who wanted to share it with her.
This kind of conversation always happens when I call on Mira. Ever since I took my first steps in this house as a child, she has always been with me. I shudder to imagine how different my upbringing would have been if Mira had not been brought into my life. We were five years old when we first met, and from there my life was filled with a small happiness everyday.
~~~FlashbackNextChapter~~~
A/N: I can't wait for the next one! This chapter and the next will be all about Mira, and I'm sure there'll be some fans after you all read them. Don't worry though, the other girls still have yet to show Starr what they can really do. The poll will be up sometime within the next few days, so be sure to look for it on my profile and decide who Dr. Animus should respond to.
6: Our Special SpotA/N: Arc Time! Yes, this is an arc, so it'll only focus on Starr's history with one of the heroines of our story. This arc is about Mira, his childhood friend and personal attendant. She was introduced in the previous chapter, but she wasn't always so cheerful and casual with Starr. House Animus was very strict before he took control, and his life was quite bleak. Mira changed it all, as you'll read in this chapter.This entire chapter is a flashback from Starr's point of view, so keep that in mind. Enjoy this last part of my House of Animus update for my birthday!
~~~ChapterStart~~~
“Dorian, we would like you to meet someone.” My mother said to me with a stern look. It has always been a tradition in House Animus that only the current Patriarch shall inherit the name of 'Starr'. 'Dorian' is my true name, before I became the Patriarch of House Animus.
“Young one, you have reached the age where you can now properly speak, and with that comes the responsibility of learning how to command others as a perfect master in any group.” Father, the previous Starr, always stressed the idea of me becoming an accomplished leader.
“Just as your father said, commanding others is the pride of the Animus household, so to teach you the very basics of exercising your authority, we've taken a new face into our service.” Mother's face flickered with some warmth, but all I noticed at that age was her pride in our family.
“Young one, we would like you to meet Mira. She will be your personal attendant from now on and I expect you to mold her into someone worthy of House Animus, nothing less.” Father glared at me past his glasses with an intense feeling of expectation.
All I could do then was nod, still too afraid of my parents to say anything in their presence. I looked at the girl they called Mira. She looked to be about five, the same age as me, and quite natural-looking in her maid's uniform. Short brown hair, green eyes and a soft face made me happy for a reason that I had yet to learn of back then. However, the look in those eyes betrayed any feeling that she was comfortable with her position, or life in general for that matter. Even still, as an innocent five-year-old in the world, I simply ignored her depressed look. As soon as my parents left us, I pulled Mira outside with me.
Sighing, I smiled softly at her before speaking for the first time that day, “You want to play with me? My name is Starr, by the way. Everyone calls me Dorian, but soon my name will be Starr. Then everyone will see that I'm the best master in the family!”
I laughed a little before pulling her along as we ran through the grounds, introducing her to the servants I knew, especially Samuel. He saw the sadness on her face, but stayed silent about it because at that moment, I did not know it, but somehow my actions with Mira managed to plant a small seed of warmth in her empty heart. After meeting all of the servants, I took her to my special spot, where I would always go whenever I felt like having time alone.
~~~HistoryIsBoring~~~
At the very back of the grounds, there is an ancient clock tower leftover from the first generation of Animus who created our legacy over 1,000 years ago. The clock tower has never stopped ticking and continues to do so, a reminder of the history behind my family. However, at my tender age I cared little for the importance of the tower, only for the beauty it brought when we climbed up. I wanted Mira to discover the reason I loved the tower, so I asked her to go up first. Of course, she seemed scared to go, so I grabbed her hand as I led the way up the winding staircase inside the tower. After we reached the area behind the clock face, Mira's face softened somewhat and she smiled slightly at the view from behind the clock face.
“You like it up here, huh? That's good, I like it too! Mother and Father won't let me up here though, ever since I almost fell off from my special spot.” I explained as I smiled at her silence, “Come on, it's this way!” I ran to a hidden stairway past the massive pendulum inside the tower. With some hesitation, Mira slowly followed me as her eyes began to clear themselves from their hazy slumber.
After we finally reached the top of the tower, far above everything else there except the roof, I saw Mira let go of a breath she had held since she first came to this house only a few hours earlier. Her mouth was finally set in a happy smile and her emerald eyes had finally shone with new life. Then, the first words I ever heard her say to me and the very moment that sparked our lifelong friendship came forth: “Thank you.”
I didn't know what love was back then, but hearing her first words to me...there is no sweeter memory I can recall. We spent the rest of the day in that spot; I generally made most of the conversation while she silently took in everything about me. It was almost like how we started, but that time it felt like she was actually alive and enjoying my company instead of tolerating it. Slowly, bit by bit, she started to open herself to me once I finished telling her about my life and all I had come to love here. She told me that she loved nature, especially flowers, even though she had lived in the city. From the time she took her first steps, she always loved being outdoors. She told me about her older sister and how she would take her along on nature walks, emphasizing how she learned to adore violets during one of them.
~~~FunAfternoon~~~
By the time Mother and Father sent Samuel to look for us, the sun had already set and the moon slowly made its way atop the heavenly throne. Mira reverted back to her cold, silent self as I led her back down the tower, but I noticed she gave me small smiles occasionally. A new place of warmth opened up in my heart after that day, for as long as Mira was in my life, I knew that would no longer feel the loneliness of living in House Animus.
For the next 3 years, we did everything together from tricking the servants, to admiring the view from our special spot, even convincing Mother and Father to let us roam outside of the grounds. Mira gradually opened up to me; she was finding her voice again, and I quickly learned that she had a fun-loving personality. I saw the life filling those jade-green eyes I admired and the smile that I loved seeing became a regular sight every time I looked at her. Everything felt right with the world at that time, as long as I had Mira with me. Even at that tender age of 8, I began to feel some attraction to my best friend, despite the strict rules Mother and Father bore into me when they still cared about my upbringing.
“You must never have any feelings of attraction to a servant. They are of a lower class than you, no matter how close you may think you are to one. When you are able to be married, you must find a woman of noble status; nothing more, nothing less.”
Father's words weighed heavily in my young mind, but I heeded them despite what I perceived to be love towards Mira. Mother agreed with Father's rule as she always did, so I alone was left to ponder what I should do about these feelings. I was quite intelligent for my age, having been self-taught and tutored by the servants, but there were some things I still did not know about. I felt the rare feeling of helplessness, so I resolved to asking Samuel for his advice on the matter once I was alone from Mira.
“Samuel, is it true what they say about love? That it conquers all things?” I asked him curiously.
“In some cases, but why did you wish to know, Young Master?” He did not seem fazed at all by my sudden question.
“I have been thinking about what Mother and Father told me about: the rules they outlined should I ever have feelings of attraction.”
“Ah, those rules are very important in keeping your bloodline pure as a noble family. However, this is more than simply following the rules, isn't it?” He always puzzled me with his astounding insight.
“Yes. It seems that I have become quite fond of...a certain maid, but the rules stop me from pursuing this fondness any further. Also, I do not quite understand this feeling of love or how I should respond to it.” I looked at his with hope shining in my eyes, confident in his vast knowledge of my family's history.
“Hmm...this is a very difficult case that you are asking me about. How important has this maid become in your eyes? If you deem her more important that your own life, then the rules can do nothing to hinder you any longer.” With that, Samuel walked on, leaving me to take in his words.
~~~WiseWords~~~
I found Mira once again after walking outside and heading towards the old clock tower. She stood at the base of the tower waiting for me, no longer wearing her normal maid attire, but instead a simple cream-colored sun dress that complemented her features very well. Thinking back on it, this was actually the first time I had seen her in somewhat casual clothing. She laughed at my 'thinking face' as she called it, and grabbed my hand as soon as I was close enough. Like always, we walked up the clock tower and this time, Mira led the way with full confidence unlike her first day here. We reached our special spot shortly and just sat there, enjoying each other's company, our fingers interlocked, watching the calm landscape as the sun hung overhead. This was one of the happiest moments I have ever known. Never before was I even remotely content; Mother and Father hardly showed me love as they did for Dante.
~~~GoldenMoment~~~
“Starr?” She turned to me with those soft green eyes.
“What is it, Mira?” I looked at her with my own blue ones.
“Will you take me here every year from now on? Just the two of us?”
“Of course. This is our special spot, after all.”
“Thanks. You have no idea how much that means to me.”
“You don't have to thank me. I'm just glad there's someone like you around with me.” I smiled at her, oblivious to the blush that crept on her face.
“Starr, can I...tell you something?” I should have noticed her sudden hesitation, but back then I thought nothing of it.
“Sure, what do want to-” I was cut off in a flash. All I saw in that moment was her eyes staring back at me as the warmth spread across our bodies in that single climax to the time we had spent together. We held our poses for a minute or so, but to me it felt like eternity. Eventually, we pulled away, smiles adorning both of our faces.
“I love you, Starr Animus.” Mira finally said to me.
~~~Awww~~~
A/N: A lovely end to an arc, isn't it? I'll admit, this chapter was definitely the best chapter I have made by far, in any story. Mira's life was saved by Starr, who learned what love was for the first time, as well as his first kiss. The next chapter will introduce Dana, the succubus and her...interesting profession, so be ready for that as well. Don't forget to look on my profile for the poll to decide which of the heroines will be next to receive her own arc!
7: A Day in TownA/N: Present time! The third chapter added to The House of Animus since I announced my upcoming birthday! (Woohoo!) I love this story, especially when I've got such fitting music to create the scenes I want. (The Katawa Shoujo soundtrack is amazing!) This chapter brings us back to the present after that brief history between Mira and Starr, so we're moving on with the story! Although, I don't know whether or not to remove the last chapter because this chapter can easily be used instead without much of a plot hole. Oh well, I liked Mira's arc quite a bit. The next heroine to get an arc will either be May or Dana, so be sure to cast your votes on the poll I have set up right on my profile! Enjoy this last part of my House of Animus present to you all!
~~~Present~~~
“Starr. Starr...hello? Helloooo?” Mira waves her hand in my face, checking if she has my attention.
“Uh, ahem, what?” I childishly try to cover up my mistake.
“You were daydreaming. Thinking about what we've been through?” As expected, she knows me all too well.
“Yes, I'm still grateful to have you with me here, in my life. I do love you, but I still can't marry you.” I speak the truth and nothing more.
“One day, we'll make it happen. I just know it.” She beams at me with those gorgeous green orbs.
A moment passes as I try to keep my thoughts focused.
“Do you want to go into town with me? It's mostly for business, but I'm sure we can have some fun there too...” I casually add to mask my enthusiasm with Mira's statement.
“A date, huh? Sure, I'm not busy right now. What kind of business do you have in town?”
“I'm going to see Dana for a bit and pass on news about the party.” I slightly cringe at the mention of that name; mostly because of the personality it belongs to.
Samuel cuts Mira off before she can respond, handing me the list that I requested as well as a glass of the Animus family's private wine collection. I dismiss him to his other duties as I look over the list; it is rather short, as expected. Dante's name is among the available staff (of course), but another name catches my eye also: Shion. It's unlike her to pause her work, but I suppose it's not unheard of. I can only bring one more person with me, and as much as I would like to have Shion come with us, Mira has yet to fully...adapt to my two secret creations. It will have to be Dante then, which works for us since Dante is the next closest person to Mira after myself. I fold up the list and slide it inside my suit pocket, turning back to Mira once that's done.
“Let's go find Dante.” I command, knowing fully well that Mira knows exactly where he is.
~~~FoundHim~~~
Sure enough, we find Dante in the main lobby, crouching low and watching for something.
“What are you doing?” Mira says suddenly, startling Dante from his hiding spot.
“Shh! Can't you see I'm sneaking?” He whispers to us as he crouches behind a large vase.
“You look ridiculous.” I comment, straight to the point.
“Yep, adds more to your creep streak.” Mira adds her own blunt attack.
“So much for counting on my friends to help me. Anyway, just stop talking for a little bit; I've almost got her.” Dante looks back past the vase and sure enough, blue hair and cat ears come into view.
“Why are you such a wuss in front of her? Aren't you supposed to be of higher rank?” Mira dryly jabs at Dante.
“Rank holds no meaning for those in love; I thought you knew this.” He returns the jab without shifting his gaze from May.
“This is just too uncomfortable.”, I mumble as I walk past Dante towards May, “Hello May.”
“Hello, Starr. Is Tienge around?” She asks me sheepishly as always.
“Yes, but she is in the middle of a training session. You are always welcome to go and watch if it suits you; we have gone over this before.”
“I know it's okay with you, but I still can't help feeling that I'm intruding on her time and yours by visiting so much. I-” I cut her off by placing my hand on her shoulder.
“This is your dream, May.” I gently feel the set of cat ears she is always wearing, “Why should Tienge or myself ever stop you from living it when we can see that it means so much to you? I admire you for feeling so strongly about being a cat-girl, and I'm sure Tienge is more than happy to have someone to learn about the ways of the cat alongside her.” I smile, causing May to flush a soft pink before staring at the floor.
“...Thank you, Dr. Animus, for your words.”
“Go now. You do not want to keep Tienge waiting.” I give her a playful push as she starts to walk through the halls again. I glance back at Dante who is now standing at his full height, a few inches taller than me, but his face of complete despair makes the scene quite comical.
“Starr, what the hell? I was so close to sealing the deal with her and you just go and-”
“Sweep her off her feet? He's able to talk to her, unlike you who cowers behind a vase.” Mira pointedly insults him.
“Alright alright, I'll be sure to put some more effort into this, point taken. So, what does my little brother want to ask me?” Dante raises an eyebrow, merely for effect since he did not care about my business terribly, which is good.
“Will you come with us for a trip into town? I am merely going to see Dana about some business.” I tell him as if it was common knowledge.
“Does your 'business' often involve sex-driven women and acts of questionable morality?” He asks in his normal casual tone.
I was the Master of House Animus, but that does not mean Dante is forbidden to jab at me sometimes. I enjoy his disregard for our positions, it is refreshing compared to the wide berth I receive among nobility.
“Not always, but if Dana is involved, you can safely assume you are correct.” I agree with him. Dana is certainly not the most prudent individual I have come to know, but she holds good intentions all the same.
“So, I take it we've got everyone? Let's get going, I wanna drive!” Mira announces with lightness in her voice.
“Oh no, not after what happened last time. The fallout from that took over a month to clear up and I don't want a repeat; I'm driving, no arguments.” Dante quickly takes control of the conversation in fear.
“Starr said I could drive, so your decision is overruled.” Mira counters with a very clever, but obvious lie.
“Did you really say that?” Dante looks at me, bewildered.
“As much trouble as it was to have Mira driving last time, I thought it could pose less of a risk now.” I calmly take Mira's side, if only to tease Dante some more.
“No fair! You always take Mira's side over mine! Whatever happened to 'brothers stick together'?” Dante whines.
I ignore him as I start my walk towards the front doors, opening them and gesturing my companions to follow. No further discussion is made as we step into one of the black sedans parked in front of the Animus Mansion.
~~~Gulp~~~
“Jesus Christ! Could you slow down, Mira!?” Dante shouts from the back seat while gripping his seat-belt tightly.
“Please take your time, Mira, I am in no hurry to get there.” My gentle contrast to Dante's yelling seems to work as Mira slowly eases her weight off of the accelerator.
“Sorry about that, Starr. I guess I'm still a bit nervous when it comes to driving.” Mira reddens a bit as she looks over to me in the passenger seat.
“We are here to have fun, but that also means staying safe. Do try to calm yourself while we are here.”
“Mm...okay” She nods.
“Dana's working today, isn't she? Dammit, why do have to go there of all places. Just looking at the place makes me seriously want to douse myself in holy water or something.” Dante makes his complaints clear. I don't disagree with him, but among the nobility such an establishment is relatively common so I mostly overlook it.
After driving for about 5 minutes, Mira's speed regardless, we find ourselves in the heart of the town nearest to the Animus Mansion: Astor. It is a typical small town, with many urban features and attractions but little in the way of unique charm. I have found it relaxing to simply come here during my free time and mingle among the common people. They treat me like anyone else, regardless of whether or not they recognize the House Animus emblem on my clothing. It comforts me to know that I live near a town such as this; so average in every way, yet more incredible than I could ever imagine.
All those years of my childhood were lost without any hope of taking them back. Even given the chance, I would not change it and leave it be. In the end, Mother and Father truly were my parents and they loved me just as any other parents love their children. If I had known about this town as a child, it would be little more than an annoyance once I reached my current age. Now, only 8 years afters discovering it, I am filled with awe each time I come.
I lean back in my seat and shut my eyes knowing that for all of their faults, I am grateful to Mother and Father for withholding this part of life from me.
~~~ThisTownIsSpecial~~~
A/N: Starr's not such a bad guy once you know what he's thinking. Or is he? Next chapter will show you a 'devilish' side of him that you may have never guessed, because we'll finally be meeting Dana and discover what her 'profession' is that has even the normally collected Dante on edge.
8: A Suggestive SuccubusA/N: The Succubus has arrived! Dana will be making her debut in this chapter, so try not to be taken in too hard by her charms. She works in a...questionable industry, but it's perfectly legal since she is the owner, in more ways than one. This is an early chapter, but more and more I find myself wanting to put this story on an erratic schedule like I do with Twin Hearts, we'll see though. Enjoy and don't forget to vote in the poll on my profile; it seems there is a push for Lucia's arc to be next.
~~~ChapterStart~~~
Finally, we arrive at our destination: Silent Sisters. Dante blanches as we step out of the car and Mira has to drag him out as we walk down the sidewalk to the establishment. Today is Wednesday, so Dana is most likely 'working' but there shouldn't be too many customers at this time. If I am lucky, there is a chance that Dana is willing to be civil, therefore leaving plenty of time for Mira and I to spend together.
“Starr! Dante! It's so good to see you two here. I take it the maids at the mansion aren't putting out lately?” Dana's low seductive voice echoes towards us when we enter.
A number of Dana's girls greet us equally in kind with the same type of suggestive tone.
“Can I go home now?” Dante is quick to ask once he spots Dana coming.
“No. Just stay close and it will be over soon.” I reassure him.
“This is place is just as dirty as they say. I kinda agree with Dante; definitely should've brought holy water.” Mira mutters to herself.
I poke her playfully in the side at this comment and turn my attention back toward Dana as she comes into full view. A very revealing red dress, vibrant red hair, demon horns and a swishing tail fill my vision as I glance at Dana's lusting red eyes. Her girls immediately resume working and keep themselves busy once Dana stops in front of me. By the emotion in her eyes, Dana seems to want my presence in private. Try as she might, I have long developed an immunity to her demonic suggestions. This does not stop her of course, so she takes the next step and drags me by the hand to her office in secret back rooms of her establishment. I signal for Dante and Mira to follow, but Dante is flanked by two performers and Mira is busy trying to protect him.
In her office, Dana lets out a sigh and pours me a drink, handing it to me once we both sit down.
“So what brings you here today? Have you finally accepted my offer?” Dana gives a sly smile, adjusting her dress so that it slides down slightly.
“No, I have no desire to accept your proposition at all. I am here to bring news to you from Lucia about-”
“The Lyres' party? Yeah, I know about that already. Lucia might think she's the queen, but she can't get even a fraction of the information I can. I suppose you want to know if I'm coming or not, am I right?”
“You are. I also have a proposal for you, if you decide to attend.” I maintain my steady voice, not flinching at all under Dana's playfully deceptive gaze.
~~~IWonderWhatItIs~~~
“I'm going, so tell me what you have in mind.” Her eyes shift for only a moment, but it is enough to tell me that she is genuinely interested.
“As you may guess, I will most likely bring Tienge as one of my guests.”
“I hate her. I'm not going to be friendly to her if that's what you want.” Dana narrows her eyes and sneers at me before resuming her normal wistful expression.
“I don't want you both to get along; at least not now. However if you can resist arguing with Tienge and refrain from violence with her, I can offer you...a good man.” I show no fear in my eyes at all, especially in mentioning Dana's wish.
Dana's eyes widen at my offer of a good man.
“You're lying. There's no way you have such a rare man in the Animus family.”
“Believe what you like. I know some things that even you cannot be informed about.” I bluff, hoping that it would goad her into accepting my offer.
Five years ago, she told me that she came to the mortal world to find a husband. However her standards are nearly impossible to satisfy, among other things. I had only learned that she was a succubus after Lucia proved it to me in one of her visits to House Animus. Dana happened to be visiting with her and at one point I asked Lucia about how the two knew each other. Lucia revealed that Dana is actually her cousin from her father's brother. To prove it, Lucia tugged on Dana's tail which reacted to it by curling around her wrist. Lucia also asked me to touch Dana's horns. Once I did, it felt exactly like a warm ember; warm enough for comfort, but cool enough not to burn my hand. And now here we sit, neither side willing to back down from the other's challenge.
“May I know the name of this man for me?”
“No, you may not. You are well-acquainted with him, if I recall correctly.” I half-lie, the two have met, but they are not close.
“...Okay then, I'll accept your offer. Tell your man to meet me in the park outside of town. I'll be near the fountain at 3 in the afternoon.” We both get up and shake hands. I almost make it out of her office until I hear her voice again, “And Starr? Make sure to wear something nice, okay?” Dana genuinely smiles at me before turning away.
“If only you could stop chasing clouds and look towards the sky.” I mutter under my breath.
“Dante, Mira, it is time for us to leave.” I call out to them, not pausing my stride to the exit.
“Starr...help me please...” I hear Dante pleading behind me along with the sounds of ripping clothes and cracking bones.
“Don't mind us, Starr, this will only take a minute.” Mira assures me as I pass her walking to Dante.
“I give you thirty seconds, we don't want to late for our date.” I tell her without looking back.
Thirty seconds after I am outside, Mira emerges from the establishment dragging a half-clothed and weeping Dante. This does not bother nearly as much as it should, since this happens every time anyone from House Animus comes to Silent Sisters. So far Dante is the only one from House Animus who manages to escape with some semblance of clothing (and dignity) left. He really does complain too much sometimes; it would be much worse if Dana caught him. I tell Dante to drive home by himself which he is quick to obey as he snatches the keys out of Mira's hand and jumps into the car, speeding away in minutes.
“Where should we go first?” I ask the cute girl next to me, smiling as wide as she is.
~~~TimeForFun~~~
A/N: Oh Starr, you are one fine gentleman. If some of you didn't get the hints, Dana does what a succubus does best as part of her work, as well as employing other girls to help out with the large number of customers they get. The next chapter will be more in-depth with Nimura and then finally, the arc chosen by the poll will be released so please, just take two seconds of your time to cast a vote on the poll displayed on my profile.
9: The Cat's OwnerA/N: Time for...Nimura-nyan! The true cat-girl is finally given her own arc. Well, it's only a mini-arc, but it will set the stage for her and Starr's partnership in this story. Twin Hearts will be a bit late on the update, so please bear with it. I'm thinking about updating this story weekly instead of bi-weekly, depending on how steadily I make the chapters. Anyways, I'm looking for some votes on the poll still so be sure to give it a look. The poll for the next arc will close on 2/14/15, exactly one month since its creation. Enjoy this in-depth mini arc on the true cat-girl of House Animus!
~~~AfterTheDate~~~
I step out of the shower with a towel wrapped around my waist feeling refreshed and pleased that today went well. Thinking back to it, I would say that it was a day worth remembering. Mira and I had fun in town after we sent Dante back. It felt just like it did the first time we went there. We visited all of the places we knew of: the public park, the business district, karaoke bars, and the mall that Mira enjoyed so much. After having our fun, we traveled out of the city to the mountain temple and the cemetery that housed Mother and Father. They were harsh, strict, and generally unloving but they were my parents nonetheless and I do all I can to ensure all of their efforts in raising me do not go to waste.
“Master, dinner is being served in five minutes!” I hear a butler call out to me from behind the bathroom door.
“Do as you wish! I will just be a few minutes late!” I answer back.
The following sound of rapid footsteps tells me that all of the servants are currently moving to the dining hall, so there is no need for me to exit the bathroom just yet. Suddenly a thought occurs to me that I often think about while working in my study.
I look into the mirror and it looks back at me; it mocks me in reflecting all of the pain, misery, violence, and loneliness in my life. That dark past led me to a bright future, but I still ponder the reason I have to darken the future of others around me. My experiments, the last of which was the creation of Tienge and Shion, all showed me the very greatest evils that man is capable of. The worst result of it all frightens me still: I enjoyed each and every one of them. I swore that I would never return to that malicious form and the demon ensures it. Yet with each passing day now, I find myself more and more tempted to return to my old ways.
~~~TheDarkCorrupts~~~
“Nyan~” My concentration shatters upon hearing this sound from behind me.
“Nimura, how nice it is to see you again. What business do you have with me in my privacy?” I only manage to stand up straight, slowly regaining my calm demeanor.
“Eh? Kore dozo...yoroshiku onegai shimasu, goshuujinsama.” I see Nimura bow in the mirror with her arms outstretched, so I have no choice but to turn around to see the gift she wishes to give me.
“It's...interesting at the very least, but what is it exactly?” I take the item from her hands and turn it over in my own. It appears to be a cat bell no matter how many times I turn it over. However, what is strange about it is the purity of gold that it is made of; from guessing, it looked to be at least 80% or higher. I brought it to my ear and almost flicked my wrist if not for another unusual quality about the bell: the soft singing from inside. I try to listen more closely, but it seems to stay as soft as a whisper no matter how closely I put it near my ear. It is a soothing lullaby that instantly brings me to a state of peace and warmth. I look to Nimura, who is staring at me with her crimson eyes.
“Where did you find this? It's beautiful...”
“That is my most prized possession; it is my last memento of my home in Nihon. The people of my tribe would only give these to those we absolutely trust, and so it is yours.” Her English is impeccable and clear.
“I...cannot accept this. It is your most precious keepsake, and to give it away to a complete stranger...I can't have it.” I respond to her with a look of concern over her judgment.
“I trust you enough to let you have it. You are not someone who will misuse the trust placed in you and you do not hesitate to show kindness to everyone around you. Please, take it.” Nimura closes my hand with both of hers as she peers up at me, hope glimmering in her eyes.
“If you wish for me to have it, then thank you for the gift. What do you plan to do here, since you have given me this?” I know that the Japanese do not usually act without a purpose, and it is no different with this girl.
“I want to live here, and experience the happiness that you share with everyone else. I promise to pay for my boarding and to help out around the mansion, so please think it over.” Nimura gives a kneeling bow to me and sits up waiting for my response.
“...I cannot make this decision alone, even if I am the master of this house. Please wait outside for me to be finished changing and then we will go to dinner together. I will not turn you away, but I must be sure that you are honest in your intentions.” I gently herd Nimura out of the bathroom and finish changing into my trademark suit.
~~~ToDinner~~~
We both enter the dining room with relative ease. Everyone in the room gives us a few odd looks but return to their dinners after realizing that this is nothing surprising at all, especially with Tienge and Shion around. I easily spot Tienge's bright orange ears and Shion's silver hair, to which they wave to me and call me over along with Nimura. Dante is sitting with them as expected and I take a seat next to him, Nimura choosing to be next to Tienge.
“Everyone, this is Nimura. I met her after finishing my shower and thought it would be best for her to join us here.” I try to sound casual, if only to ward off some of the scrutiny towards my guest.
“Konbanwa, minna. Watashi wa Nimura-nyan desu, hajimemashite.” The formal Japanese is unfortunately unknown to everyone except myself.
“It is nice to make your acquaintance, Nimura-san. I hope that you enjoy your time with us, however short it may be.” Shion shakes Nimura's hand which surprises me since I had no knowledge of Shion's understanding of foreign languages.
“Umm Starr, what is the cat saying?” Dante whispers to me.
“She said 'Good evening, everyone. I am Nimura, how do you do.' Do not worry, it seems Tienge is just as confused as you are.” I look at Tienge, who oddly holds a curious grin while watching Nimura.
“So can you speak English?” Tienge bluntly asks Nimura.
Nimura smiles back, looking relieved at Tienge's question rather than offended at the lack of respect in asking.
“Why, yes I am very much able to speak English. I prefer my native Japanese, but if you wish for me to speak English, then please do not worry about asking me.” Nimura's eyes flicker for a moment with some unknown emotion; maybe mischief?
The conversation stops there as I order a plate of dinner for Nimura, and the four of us finally join the rest of the room in eating dinner.
~~~FinallyFood~~~
“Ahh...that was great. I'm never disappointed with the food that comes out of that kitchen.” Dante declares, to which we all nod especially Nimura whose tail is swishing back and forth excitedly.
“Now it is time we all address the real issue with Nimura coming here.” I am met with small tension as we each cast a stern look at Nimura, who maintains her curious cat-like expression.
“I doubt she's here for the food, so why is she really here?” Tienge narrows her eyes at me.
“She must want something only Master can grant. If she was an assassin, then he would have died sometime during dinner, or when he was in the shower.” Shion calmly comments without any hesitation at all.
“Hey now, let's not make things so morbid. What I don't seem to get is why Starr bothered to bring her if it was something that only he can grant. Care to elaborate then?” Dante looks at me awaiting my response.
I hold a neutral if not slightly bored demeanor as I answer, “She wishes to board here for an indefinite length of time.”
“What!? You do realize that this is our house? We don't just let anyone you pick off the street live here!” Tienge slams her hands on our table as she roars her disapproval.
“You forget that we are exactly the people you are describing, Tienge.” Shion's observation instantly quells Tienge's shouting.
“How do you plan to pay for the rent if we do allow you to live here? What do you really do for a living?” Dante asks Nimura while ignoring the heavy conflict from Tienge.
“I am a thief of rare and unusual artifacts. I will pay with some of the items I acquire while living here. Do not worry, I assure you that I will not steal from the mansion and that I am not at all interested in wealth.” Nimura holds her hand up as if making a pledge.
“That's the most bullshit promise I have ever heard.” Tienge comments.
“There is some truth in what Miss Nimura speaks of: during this conversation, she has never once looked away from any of us and seems wholeheartedly paying attention.” Nothing escapes Shion's critical eye for detail.
“I noticed it too, and you can't exactly find a price for unusual artifacts because only a handful of people are experts in that. Alright, I'm convinced; she can stay here.”, Dante gives me a knowing look, “That was your plan all along, wasn't it? You're too nice to make such a decision without first talking to the rest of us. I appreciate the thought, but you need to remember that you are the Master of House Animus; you can make some decisions yourself.”
“I am aware of my position, but it would be selfish and foolish of me to decide things without first consulting my closest friends.” I smile to everyone and they return the gesture with equal warmth, “Okaenirasai, Nimura.”
“...Wah...heh...nyan~! Arigatou, goshuujinsama~!!” Nimura pounces at me from across the table and brings me into a tight hug. Tienge and Shion watch with killing intent as Nimura tempts fate by playfully licking my cheek.
“Oh, this is going to just wonderful...” Dante says aloud as he sips a cup of coffee.
~~~WonderfulIndeed~~~
A/N: A new tenant at the mansion can only mean more problems, but I'm sure Starr can handle it. Dante technically has more authority than Starr which is why Starr went to him to decide on Nimura's stay. The cat bell that Nimura gave to Starr will be important in a later chapter, so try to remember its unusual qualities. For those of you who didn't understand the Japanese being spoken: (in the bathroom) Nimura said 'Here, take this...nice to meet you, Master.' and after dinner, Starr said "Welcome home, Nimura.", to which she responded with a "Thank you, Master!" *phew* Now that everything's settled, I'll see you all again when the next chapter's here.
10: Things to ComeA/N: This is where things will get...edgy. This is also the start of Lucia's arc, since that seems to be what you guys are requesting. The poll is still up for those of you who want to vote, but I just went ahead and picked Lucia since I've wanted to do her arc for a while now. Twin Hearts is somewhat slowing down in production, but I'm sure it will pick back up again, so be patient. Recently, this story got its first ever review, so I got so inspired that I made a second chapter to come along with this! Enjoy the two-chapter update and read/review and PM me if you have any thoughts to share.
~~~GoodMorning~~~
The next morning, I wake to the sounds of faint rustling and the occasional whispered phrase. The house seems alive with activity as I hear the padding of footsteps as people pass in front of my bedroom door. Normally, I am used to this dull hum of idle noise, but something felt odd about the timing of it all. I look to my nightstand next to my bed and realized why I am correct about the timing: it is 6:00 AM and much too early to be going through morning preparations. Alas, it is not something that catches me completely off-guard so I simply lie down in bed once again and close my eyes to welcome back the sleep that was needlessly taken from me. Or so I would have, if the presence of demonic power did not suddenly fill the room.
“Good morning to you as well...Lucia.” I sit up again and look to the table set I have near my door.
“I thought you would be more excited about my presence here, Starr. You really do have a gorgeous figure, especially this early in the morning.” Lucia uses such a steady and even voice that most would accept her words as common fact.
“I can confess the same for you, considering your renowned beauty. What brings you to me at such an hour and in the privacy of my chambers?” I absolutely refuse to allow my feelings for her show in my voice as I keep up my neutral expression.
“I have a proposition for you, Dr. Animus, considering your actions of late.”, Lucia only addresses me by my title when discussing serious matters, so I divert my full attention to her, “In the recent months, it seems that you have had a change of heart and so your actions have reflected such. Lord Lucifer is most concerned about you, since you have also attracted the gaze of the Everlasting Lord.” Her eyes stare into mine showing not the strictness I expected, but genuine worry for my well-being.
“Thank you for your concern, my dear lady. The Everlasting Lord may be physically incompetent, but his influence is far-reaching. I will speak with your father about dealing with him, but what was your proposal?” I get out of my bed wearing nothing but a pair of long pants and sit down near Lucia.
“I...wish to be closer to you.” My eyes widen as Lucia blushes, her rarely-shown true self out in the open now.
“Lucia...you know the complications that come with that.” I whisper.
“I'm aware of what it means, but I just can't sit by while your life is in danger like this! You're the first human I met, and the only one who accepts my weakness. I don't want to lose you from my life, especially not to something as stupid as this! Do you how painful it is for me to watch you foolishly squander what remaining life you have left?! My father gave you that demon to protect you, and yet you've already given up two years of your lifespan by using its power! Why do you have to hold such high ambitions? Why are you so negligent of your own life? Why do I...I...love-” She never finishes her thought because she is overwhelmed with both her crying tears and my arms gently wrapping around form.
“Don't say it....please don't say it, Lucia. If you say those three words now, I won't be able to forgive myself.” I feel both of our hearts beating rapidly, almost in tune with each other as the heat from our embrace spreads through out bodies.
“Why? Why, Starr? You're the only one who can ever make me feel this way...” Lucia mutters softly, barely making any sound.
“Because...I am afraid. I am afraid to fall even more in love with you, Lucia.” A tear falls from my eyes, followed by silence.
~~~OhDear~~~
I wake up again in a cold sweat, my breath coming in heaves.
Just a dream? It was so real though...I wonder if Lucia really does feel that way for me. No sense dwelling on it, I have a feeling she's coming to visit again today so maybe I can ask her about it then.
I look at my clock as I hear the familiar low rumbling of footsteps outside of my chambers. The time was correct now: 8:00 AM. This is the time that servants should be preparing for the morning. I look at the table set near my door and instead of finding Lucia there as I fear, Nimura is casually sitting down as she stares blankly at me. I blink several times to confirm that it truly is Nimura, even closing my eyes to sense for any trace of demonic power. My suspicions put to rest, the next obvious thing to do is greet her.
“Ohayoo gozaimasu, Nimura.” My learned Japanese brings a smile to her face.
“Ohayoo, goshuujinsama. Daijoubu desu ka?” Nimura showing her concern helps relax the tension in my thoughts.
“I am fine, Nimura. I just had a bad dream. I can't tell you what it is, sorry.”
“It's okay, Master, if you do not want to tell me. I am sure it will not hold you back today.”
A pause settles between us as we have an awkward staring match. It is only awkward for me however, since Nimura does not seem to grasp the concept of embarrassment from someone's stare and so she stares at me with those same clueless eyes.
“Why are you in my room?” I ask after conceding the match to her.
“I took a walk outside earlier, but when I came back everyone looked like they were working and could not play with me. From seeing all of the movement, I got in the mood of working and left again to complete one of my commissions. I felt bad not being able to sell this item to someone, but they offered so little money...” She reaches a hand into her yukata and holds out a white heart-shaped object, “The seller who wanted me to steal this offered $300,000 but I thought that seemed too little when considering the sentimental value.”
“$300,000 for that...what is it supposed to be?” I look at Nimura in complete disbelief that she has such a high income for her commissions. As she speaks, I get out of my bed and begin dressing myself in my usual suit and jacket.
“It is a heart made entirely of animal bone. I am not sure what animals it is made of, but I can identify a few: cow, lion, tiger, giraffe, moose, elephant, and even human.” Nimura's voice is as calm and innocent as ever; so much that it is unnerving.
“H-Human, you say? May I hold it?”, Nimura hands the artifact to me once I sit down at the table, “There are no cracks or veins that show where each piece was attached and it is a constant shade of white throughout...this was made by a master artisan although, this method is completely unknown to me. Do you mind if I give this to Shion for examination?”
“I cannot decide that; it is yours after all. I refused to sell this because I wanted to give it you as a gift. You can do what you want with it, I do not mind at all.” Nimura looks down, flustered and unwilling to meet my gaze.
I reach towards her slowly and purposefully, my hand making contact with her soft dark hair. It is greeted with a soft and confused 'Nya?' but Nimura makes no motion to remove it, instead relaxing under my touch and letting a soft purr escape her. I keep petting her head, occasionally stroking her ears gently. Nimura's tail waves back and forth contentedly as she leans forward and wraps her arms around me with a smile. We stay this way for a long 10 minutes with nothing but the sound of Nimura's purring filling the room. I close my eyes and bask in this feeling of peace that we created, unwilling to open them even when I hear Nimura's voice.
“Master, may I ask something of you?”
“Ask away, Nimura.”
“Can I be like this again with you?”
“...Of course.” And as I look down at her face, she makes the most daring move as she looks up at me. My focus, my concentration, everything that makes up my careful demeanor shatters the moment Nimura steals a kiss from me. I can do nothing else but sit, stunned by the sudden and unpredictable course that this conversation is taking.
“Nyan~that was a nice treat. Arigatou, goshuujinsama. You should go to breakfast now. I will not keep you any longer.” Nimura stands up and promptly exits my room.
“Uh...huh.” I am now left alone to pick up the pieces and restore my inner calm.
~~~ATreat?~~~
A/N: Jeez, talk about playful...but then again I can't say I didn't see that coming since she's a cat and all. Oh, were you all still thinking about Lucia? I'm pretty sure it was a dream, but what do I know? I'm just an innocent commentator like you guys. The next chapter will confirm whether or not it was a dream, as well as showcase one of the more regular events at the Animus Mansion. Not much more I can say at this point, so until next chapter! See you all very soon!
11: Clash, Flow, SwirlA/N: Quick warning before you guys start reading, more of a formality really: Please don't flip/throw/destroy anything nearby, because this chapter will stir up your figurative insides. Really, stay calm. Moving on to the opening notes, Lucia's arc is finally here! I know the poll is still open for voting, but I wanted to do Lucia's arc anyway. Remember to leave a review, favorite, or even PM me your thoughts so far.
~~~OhJoy~~~
“You never learn, do you? An animal like you should be put her place with the other ones. It doesn't matter if you walk like a human or talk like one, an animal is still an animal. You have no chance of finding a boyfriend with the way you are now.”
“What!? You bitch, screw you! I'd rather be an animal than a sex-crazed demon with nothing better than a few choice words to get what she wants!”
“Oh!? And who is the girl that just roars all day and night to get people to pay attention to her!?”
I sit here on the floor the training room with disappointment strewn across my face. Each time Dana and Tienge meet, there is always something that they must argue about and it inevitably leads to a 'sparring' session in the House Animus training room. Aside from the typical annoyance of having to supervise these matches, my position is what truly distresses me. Shion sits to my right, Lucia on my left, and Mira has her arms wrapped around my neck in an affectionate hold. On the other side of the floor, May is casting a far-off glance at me. Effectively, I am unable to escape this clashing of emotions that I feel at the moment. Lucia sitting so close to me only serves to keep my nerves wound up and Shion enforces that fact when she gives me oddly cute glances every so often.
Ever since I regained my normal focus that morning, I could not help but think back to the strange dream I had of Lucia. The way she expressed her feelings about my health, her tears as she confessed her love for me, and how warm it felt when I finally had the courage to hold her in such an affectionate way; it strangely felt real. Immediately after breakfast, I was told that Lucia had arrived and strangely enough, I couldn't bear to meet with her. I had been so convinced that it was a dream, but the feelings from it still stayed with me.
“They never change, do they?” Lucia asks to no one in particular.
“Nope, it seems they will forever be fighting each other.” Mira cheerfully comments as she presses her body against me.
“Each fight between them is the same, but with different reasons. The last one was about breast sizes, but it seems this one is about the likeliness of finding a spouse. I do not believe they truly hate each other; rather, they communicate through fighting.”, Shion pauses before looking at me, “Master, would you happen to be free after this?” I am happy that she wants to further our relationship, but I must ask Lucia about the dream.
“I am sorry, Shion, Lucia has requested my presence after this fight.” I lie, but Lucia is unfazed and seems relieved as I hear her let out a near-silent breath. Oddly enough, I find myself smiling as well.
~~~WeKnow~~~
“It seems the fight is starting.” Lucia brings our attention back to the stage, where Tienge and Dana are facing each other with deadly intent.
“You think your pitiful claws can match up to my succubus magic? This isn't a fight, it's a beat-down.” Dana's tail is whipping viciously as her horns glow white-hot from the demonic magic she is calling forth.
“You're right, this is a beat-down. Too bad for you I've been sharpening these claws, so you'll probably get some personality on this bitchy face of yours!” Tienge roars like the tiger she is and her claws emerge from her fingertips shining brightly against the afternoon sun.
The atmosphere filling the room is tense, so much that it is painfully difficult for any of us to breathe. We all know that Tienge and Dana have never seriously injured each other, but today it seems like it's almost certain to happen. Despite her experience watching these bouts, Shion still shivers in concern for her best friend and attaches herself to my arm for comfort. I realize that despite this being Mira's first time watching, her joyfulness does not waver in the slightest. In a bold and unexpected motion, Lucia takes hold of my left hand. Before I am given a moment to interpret it, she pulls me up with her as she stands before speaking to me loud enough for everyone except Tienge and Dana to hear.
“Starr, there is something we need to talk about. I'm sure you wanted to talk with me too, so let's finally get this issue out of the way.”
She smiles at me and I can't help but share in this feeling of affection we seem to be showing.
“Excuse us, everyone, we will have to miss this fight. Mira, don't even think about spying on us and Shion, please help Tienge calm down if she loses.”
With that, Lucia and I walked out into the hall, her leading me by the hand through the mansion until we finally reach the closed doors of my study.
~~~PrivateTime~~~
The silence is tense, but not uncomfortable at all. It feels like both of our emotions are in the air, swirling, mixing, and clashing playfully as we both pathetically try to face one another. Despite the slightest shifts in our seated postures, we can feel the anxious feelings between us. Recently, many of our meetings have started this way, but the shame on our faces makes this far from a normal meeting. I try to study Lucia's face, searching for something that lets me know that this is just a meeting between friends. My confidence is gradually dropping as I search in vain and my steady expression is broken when she averts her eyes before speaking.
“Starr...do you know why I have called this meeting with you?”
“I have an idea, but I want to hear it from you, Lucia.”
“Of course, it would make more sense to you if I told you.”, she takes a breath before continuing, “This morning, I said something that I should not have. I let my emotions speak first without even considering your perspective. It was selfish of me to try to act on these feelings of mine, but no matter what I did to suppress them, there was still a small sliver of hope that you would look at me. I care for you, Starr, more than anyone else I know. Do you remember when my father granted you that demon to use? I felt so happy for you to hold my family's favor, but at the same time, I was in such an tightening pain that I wanted you to refuse it.”
I stay motionless, but my eyes perfectly exhibit all of the conflict taking place within me.
“I know you use it for good deeds, but I can't stand it! You sacrifice too much by using it! Do you plan to use it until you die as early as the next hour!?”
Tears are falling freely from Lucia's face now, but she seems to desperately try to push on.
“Do you really plan on leaving me, all alone?”
The question is not what bothers me, it's the sound of Lucia's voice. She is no longer the kind and gentle lady I know, but more like a terrified child who has lost all sense of light in the world.
~~~TheWorstSorrow~~~
A/N: Did you read the courtesy warning before we began? Is your stuff okay? Good for you guys. The next chapter of Twin Hearts is next in the line-up, so that means I will hold off on updating this story while I get back to work on Twin Hearts. The next chapter here will reveal Starr's answer to Lucia's very obvious confession, so please be patient for the next chapter. Thank you all for your interest in The House of Animus so far!
12: Think, Then KillA/N: Chapter 12! And only about...3 weeks late. Oh boy, that's a long time to release a chapter, but it's here at least. This story is a lot slower than Twin Hearts (which has been updated also), but that's besides the point. I apologize for the lateness, everyone, it probably will happen in the future, but I'll do my best to prevent that from happening. Please take a look at my profile updates for more details as to why I haven't been releasing chapters recently. On a brighter note, I've started work on a collection of one-shots to be published on my FanFiction account, so be sure to check there once I release them! Now, lets focus our attention to this particularly tense moment in The House of Animus...
~~~WhatIsHisAnswer~~~
Everything is coming to me in a blur. All of my thoughts are now scattered for the first time in months. My heart, long sealed off to the selfish needs of others, is now beating restlessly in my chest and feels crushed when I look upon this girl who I hold in such high esteem.
Can I really say it to her? Can I really say that no matter what I do, there will be times where the demon's power could mean the difference between life and death for those I care for? Do I dare lie to her just so I don't have to see that miserable face anymore? Or do I tell her the truth and possibly make her lost all hope in life and close off her heart to the world? Why am I hesitating at all for something like this? When Mother and Father laid on their death beds, I promised them that I would watch over Dante as he became the next Starr. Instead, I challenged him in single combat for the title and used my demon's power to overcome him, giving up two years of my lifespan just to ensure my victory. What is it about her that makes me so hesitant to make the right decision?
“Lucia, I...I...I promise. I won't ever leave you, not while there's so much we have yet to experience. I understand your feelings completely, and I'm very happy about what you said to me this morning; even now, I feel like I could return those feelings. You are always there for me, working secretly to help my dreams come true, watching me as I struggle in hiding all of the evil that I perform, and you have never refused to help me in my time of need.” I gently and slowly tilt Lucia's crying face upwards to meet my own loving one, “I need to be the one to protect you now, after all you've done for me. You've held fast to this burden for all of the 15 years we've known each other without once asking for help. It's been long enough, hasn't it? Let me shoulder this with you; let me be the one caring for you now. Seeing you like this for the first time, it terrifies me and I don't ever want to see it again. You are too important to me to let yourself break apart from all of this pressure. Lucia, I'm not asking you to stop caring for me. I only ask that you let go of this responsibility you feel that you have and just share in this moment with me.”
Those words are some of the few spoken directly from my true heart and I think Lucia knows this regardless of whether or not she uses her demonic powers. There is nothing left to say between us, so in a slow tender motion, I press my forehead against Lucia's and we both hold a comforting stare with each other. In her eyes, I see all of the conflicting feelings she holds slowly melding and mixing into a cloudy haze that only compliments her stunning red eyes.
~~~TheMoodCometh~~~
Minutes pass like hours as we ever so slowly edge towards the eventual release of all of the feelings that we allowed to well up inside of ourselves. I can barely hold myself back as I greedily watch the slightest quiver in Lucia's lips and I suddenly realize how much I want to capture those lips without any inhibitions. Slowly with care, our lips come closer and closer as we finally come to understand each other and now agree that we want more.
“Lady Lucia.” A male voice sunders the entire mood we had in mere seconds.
“...” We both stay silent as the door opens and a man with spiky brown hair walks in. Upon first glance, it's clear that he is not a noble since he wears a tight-fitting dark green shirt and black pants with metal plates affixed to the knees. Though I normally forbid weapons being carried within the mansion, a Japanese katana hangs proudly on his waist. A constant, mysteriously distant look decorates his face as he glances at both of us before continuing to speak.
“Lady Lucia, your presence is requested back home and it is unsafe to be here any longer.” The man is direct and tactful as always. He gives us pause to respond, so after a few seconds I silently watch Lucia as she speaks to this man with a serious tone.
“How many have you killed and how many have yet to be killed?”
“Ten from both sides; as directed, they never met each other and the hidden ones were eliminated. Any survivors will be found by the Animus patrol officers.” The swordsman grips his weapon tightly while talking, anticipating the next group to approach the mansion.
“How can you be so sure of this? These forces against me are unconventional in every way.” I remind both of them of my opponents' strength, my voice etched in steel. Without waiting for another tense moment, I stand from my seat and throw my head high to project my voice.
“Tienge! Shion!”
Within seconds, the two girls appear in the doorway behind the man, rushing past him and stopping in front of me.
“You call us? Must be something important since we do have cellphones.” Tienge's small fangs glint for a moment before she fixes a fatal glare at our armed guest. Shion shuffles to my side, almost pressing against me with her small frame.
“Master, we shall protect you from this assassin. We will never leave your side while he still stands.” Shion holds my hand tightly as she fills the room with a graceful howl that leaves me feeling drowsy.
“There it is! The blood's pumping and there ain't no stopping it!” Tienge roars in unison with Shion, shaking me out of my sleepy state and invigorating my spirit. I look at Lucia, silently telling her that we should stop them from fighting with our guest, but she ignores me while smiling happily at this turn of events.
“Who are they, Lord Animus? Are they here for-” He barely has enough time to talk as he hastily blocks a flashing punch from Tienge. Despite using his sheathed sword to block, the man staggers somewhat from the force of the attack.
“I'd pay attention to what's in front if I were you! You're not laying a hand on our master, not as long as I'm here!” Tienge growls as she throws more attacks at him.
~~~ActionNotWords~~~
“I'm not here to harm Lord Animus. I am merely doing my job of protecting Lady Lucia.” The man stows his sword away at his side, giving me a look that tells me 'don't make me hurt them'. As Tienge rushes forward for another punch, I shout at her before things become violent.
“Stop Tienge!”
She stops, not just from my sudden command, but from the tip of a dark gray blade gently poking her abdomen. Shion has rare look of genuine surprise and concern on her face as Tienge stares at the blade, her mind still trying to process what happened. Reluctantly, Tienge relents and lowers her arms to return to my side.
“Master, what is this guy talking about? Who is he?” Tienge finally stops to think after her life was threatened just now.
“His name is Luvart, and he is Lucia's personal bodyguard. As you can see, he is much more skilled than you are now and that sword he carries has spilled enough blood to fill an aquarium tank.”
“Hmph, he got lucky, that's all. I would have easily clawed his face off if you didn't stop me.” Tienge boasts to hide her wounded pride.
“Tienge, Master and I know that you are sturdier than most people, but a sword is still able to penetrate your exposed abdomen.” Shion scolds, keeping her face fixed in its usual cold stare.
~~~ThereIsALimitToConfidence~~~
That being said, the girls focus their attention on me, waiting for me to inform them of the situation. I pay them no mind as I berate Luvart for his overconfidence in his skills.
“Luvart, what is your profession in regards to House Lucifer?” I start out.
“I am to serve Lady Lucia in avoiding any and all attempts on her life; deadly force being preferred as I am instructed. Apart from this duty, I am in the employ of House Lucifer as an assassination specialist of anyone that Lord Lucifer sees fit to eliminate.” Luvart rubs a hand along his sword gently, never breaking his gaze from me.
“This recent attempt on not just Lucia's life, but my own as well...how did you dispatch their forces?” I ask to provoke him so that he may realize his mistake.
“After I coated my blade in 'Hellfire' toxin, I inflicted moderate stab wounds on all of the enemy forces. Those who did not die from the initial attack suffered an agonizing end as the centuries-old disease spreads through their bodies.” Luvart states this as if it was an everyday occurrence to inflict a genocidal disease on small groups of people.
“That's where your expertise falls short; you are overconfident in your ability. Did you search the bodies of any of these men? Was there any research done on your own about the groups opposing Lucia or did you simply accept the dossiers complied by your superiors?” I start my interrogation, reminding Luvart once again of the ever-changing world we live in.
“But Lord Animus, I-” He starts to respond, but I can tell from the tone that he has yet to learn the lesson.
“You decimated the assassins using the tools available to you; adequate, but dull. By leaving a chance for them to stay alive, no matter how short the time period, you allowed them to use any countermeasures that may have been put in place should their plan fail. Since you used a poison, it's entirely possible that the assassins had antidotes to counteract it. Did you ever stop to think about how you would account for all of these variables? A skilled assassin such as yourself should think more with his mind, not his weapon.” I mean to educate him, not criticize him. He seems to understand and kneels before bowing deeply towards me.
Standing up again at Lucia's side, he gives his response to my harsh observation of his faults, “I am grateful for your concern, Lord Animus. Had you not reminded me of my duties not just as Lady Lucia's bodyguard, but as an assassin, I fear we all may feel the consequences of this for days to come.”, having addressed me, he turns to Lucia, “My Lady, with your permission, I shall excuse myself to coordinate with the Animus patrol officers.”
Lucia smiles warmly, not just at Luvart but at me as well, as if she is peering into the purest of hearts.
“Leave our sight right away, and do not return until your mission is complete.” She voices a command, but it has a gentle undertone.
“It shall be done, Lady Lucia.” Luvart bows once again before leaving the room.
~~~BackToWork~~~
A/N: Luvart, bodyguard to Lucia and elite assassin of House Lucifer. He's an interesting character that I thought a great deal about before adding him here. His role in this story will be minor at first, but it will constantly be changing. The next chapter will focus on Starr's response to these would-be invaders of his home as well as his answer to Lucia's obvious feelings for him.
13: The True Starr AnimusA/N: Here we are, one of the central conflicts in the life of Starr Animus. If you thought you knew Starr before, prepare for a chilling revelation. He's not always the kind and level-headed Patriarch of House Animus, sometimes he's just a scientist and other times, human. Let's read and find out what Starr will do about this recent attempt on his life. One quick announcement for you all before you start reading: my one-shot collection has already been posted on FanFiction, so if you'd like to read some of my attempts at one-shot and lemon, please just search for my name on FanFiction!
~~~WhatToDo~~~
One year since I betrayed them, five since I started working with them...and now it's only fitting that they come to end everything that's associated with House Animus. I thought I'd have more time to plan, but if they've gotten this close to me already, then I'll have no choice but to use that. I only hope that Tienge and Shion will-
“Starr? Starr? Can you hear me, Starr?” Lucia voice pulls me out of my thoughts as she waves a hand in front of my face.
I shake my head briefly before turning my eyes onto Lucia's face. It's clear that I am still too affected by this recent incident on the mansion grounds. Shion and Tienge are watching me with concern and apprehension, respectively. I take a few breaths to calm my bundling nerves, then speak.
“Please repeat what you had said to me, Lucia. I fear that these events are wearing heavily on my thoughts.”
Lucia does not question nor address my hesitation at all. She knows as much as I do that this is time where a single mistake may cost us our legacies.
“As I said Starr, House Animus is no longer in a position of reverence among the other noble houses. Recently, since the conflict between House Arden and the Royal Family ended, all of the other noble houses have been put under suspicion by the victorious royals. House Animus is a constant focus in their eyes, since your family is well-known among mine and you had been contracted with them at the start of the war. I ask you as a friend, Starr, please allow my family to provide protection for you and House Animus. I can assure you that-”
“Hang on a second there, Lucy”, Tienge cut her off with a sharp tone, “Master may have been relaxed this time, but I can definitely tell you that there won't be a next time for these 'royals'. Sure, he's casual and generally an easygoing guy, but stupid is one thing he's not. There's no way we're bowing our heads just so you can chain him up to be your-”
“Tienge, that's enough”, this time it's Shion who interrupts. Her voice is soft, but almost heavy with malice. “Lady Lucia is not asking us to submit to House Lucifer, but to allow them to assist us in safeguarding our Master. I understand your concern about Lady Lucia's offer and I share it, but we can only do so much in guaranteeing the safety of House Animus. I do not wish for Lady Lucia's assistance, but with the sizable influence held by the Royal Family, there is no other choice but to accept it.” Shion gives me an expectant look, hoping I can make the right decision.
~~~InternalConflict~~~
The tension in the room is staggering, and conflict is bound to erupt at any time between Tienge and Shion. The two of them are usually in accordance, but it seems when my life is at stake, they have very different opinions. Lucia as well has her own plan for this situation, and it seems I have little choice but to accept her offer. House Animus has immense resources, but little in terms of tangible defensive forces. I slowly pace the room to help myself think, alternating my focus between the three women near me. If I am not Starr Animus, then I would jump at the chance to be protected by one of the strongest forces in this world. However, this is where the difficulty lies. Unlike most other houses, the Animus have always been the ones to question everything and to simply learn.
But is there any question to be raised when one's life is in danger? What is the price for such an asset? How long will I be under her care? What kinds of plans will be set in motion if I accept? Who in my house will be placed in danger if I refuse this offer?
My head is swarming with unanswered questions and the conflict is evident even past my outwardly calm face. There is too much to consider for making this choice and far too much to gain and lose. There is little I know of to prevent damage to my house, but there is much that I can do to lessen it.
I give a sharp look at Tienge and Shion, who both straighten up to receive my command, “Tienge, Shion, can you two find Dante and gather everyone to meet in the lobby?”
“You got it.” Tienge nods as she walks out at Shion's side.
Lucia stands in firm stance, but I am not easily fooled; she is just as worried as I am, if not more.
“We both knew this day would come, yet there is nothing we can do short of bloody revolution, is there?” I talk to her as though all of these harsh years are finally catching up to me.
“Yes, it would seem so. The Royal Family is relentless when waging war, and even afterwards they never live their lives without finding an enemy in one form or another. Dethroning them life itself would be the best course of action. If you give me permission, I can ask Luvart to go and-”
“Don't be so foolish! To lose someone like that man is not just a blow to your assets, but to your heart as well. He is a precious friend to all of us, and there is no reason that his life should be put in danger without his consent. The same is true with the royals: despite their cruelty to their people, they at least have a right to defend their lives wholeheartedly. I won't allow anyone, your father included, to prematurely end their lives unless they are willing to honorably part with it. That being said, shouldn't Luvart be finished with his mission by now?” At least 20 minutes have passed since Luvart left to help my patrol officers, too long for someone like him.
“I have just gotten a vision from him. It seems that they managed to capture one of the assassins just after he used an antidote to the Hellfire toxin. He is waiting in the guest room next door with your patrol officers. Should we address them first or go to the lobby?”
That question needs no answer as I quickly grab Lucia's hand and lead out of the room to meet with Luvart.
~~~ACaptiveAudience~~~
“Sir, we found this man attempting to run back into the surrounding forest after the swordsman stabbed him. We disarmed him and disabled his arms, so he should not have any method of retaliation.” The first officer, Captain Auburns, briefs me as I walk in with Lucia.
“He used Elixer; still a few drops left.” The second, Captain Jay, utters a few words.
“Man, was it fun cleaning up this guy's mess...”, the third patrolman Captain Vell points a finger at Luvart, “I can't believe they had to come by just as I was lighting a cigarette on break. Let's not even mention the paperwork we're gonna have to do after all this is over.”
Jay gives Vell a look of cold contempt as he comments, “Vell, no breaks or paperwork for us.”
“Indeed, it is our duty to protect our home from any threats and we must be on constant alert to ensure that we maintain the peace we always have living here!” Auburns booms with a strong voice.
These three men are the closest things I have to a security force, but they are more than enough. Originally, House Animus had the employ of at least one hundred security officers to guard to mansion; I changed all of that when I ascended to the Patriarchy. I chose three of my closest friends from Astor to lead the forces available to me. These three are so strict that all of the original one hundred resigned from the Animus security force. Needless to say, they have served my family well in the 8 years following my ascension to Patriarch of House Animus.
“You three may leave now. Find Tienge and Shion if you can and they will give you your next task.” An inhumane feeling is starting to take root in my heart and I am very sure that everyone in the room can sense the feeling of dread that I give off.
“Yes sir!” The three of them salute me before exiting the room.
“Lady Lucia, is there anything else you ask of me?” Luvart does not serve me, so it is obvious he feels no fear of me.
“Stay here and help us with this fellow. I feel that he may need some incentive, should he become uncooperative.” Even Lucia's normally warm eyes take on a murderous glint as she etches her powerfully oppressive eyes into the helpless assailant's memory.
I sit in a chair facing my would-be assassin. He is tied down to a chair, but I can see the defiance in his eyes. That defiance quickly wanes as I speak clearly, my voice filled with soft violence.
“You will tell us everything you know about what happened here today: your mission, the Elixer you used, your contractor, your tools, your enemies, everything. Do not think you can resist answering at any moment. You will answer my questions, even if you must witness your soul being fed to the very demon of your existence. You were told that I am Dr. Starr Animus, leader of House Animus and chief opposition of your employers. What they didn't tell you was that I am also called the “Doctor of Hell”. I can send you to the very borders of death, only to drag you screaming back to life. Medicine can perform many miracles, but just as many fatalities. There is no escape for you here, no hope to call upon, no life that you may cling to. I will know everything there is to know about you, and may the Lord Everlasting help you that you will maintain a proven existence in this world.”
~~~TheFunStarts~~~
A/N: Sheesh, remind me never to make Starr angry. You might think that he's just angry and looking to shed some blood, but keep in mind that he's always thinking even during this difficult time. The Animus household is mobilizing something big, but just how drastic will things have to get before Starr unleashes the full fury of his research? The next chapter will be just as serious, so stay on your toes and be sure to review/favorite and PM if you'd like to know more. Thanks everyone for your support in reading The House of Animus!

Chapter: 1
This is one of those stories that you could read over and over without getting tired of it. Though we can already see a plot and conflict, this chapter had a light, carefree atmosphere and was overall very easy to read, and your style compliments the plot perfectly. We already have a sense of the characters' personalities and of the world they live in, and it was mostly introduced indirectly through dialogue so it didn't feel like we're being loaded with a ton of information. The author's notes and subtitles also went well with the story in giving it a more informal feeling.
Before I begin with the more negative points, I would like to apologize if I seem harsh, or unintentionally insult your intelligence in correcting typos. It would be very hypocritical of me to judge you for making mistakes xD Feel free to take anything you don't agree with, with a grain of salt.
The first point is from the description: [The fun days at his mansion are also joined by the daughter of Lucifer, her maid, a lusty succubus, and a cat-girl from Japan.] - It looks like "her maid" and "a lusty succubus" are two different people, so it should say "the daughter of Lucifer; her maid, a lusty succubus; and a cat-girl from Japan."
[I've know her for many years, ever since our childhood where I mistook her for a human before I learned of her heritage.] - "...,when I mistook her for a human before learning of her heritage."
[reminding me that breakfast was ready at the usual time of 9:00 AM.] - "would be ready"
[I mean what was father thinking?] - "I mean, what was Father thinking?"
[I was jealous of his freedom and care-free life.] - This was implied by the dialogue, so you might want to delete it or say something we don't already know.
[I make it a point] [this morning isn't any different]/[today is no different] - repetition is the only problem here
[He waves it off, focusing on his relaxation at the moment.] - This sentence seemed awkward to me, and it should be "waved."
[“This is where we must part. Good luck on your research today Shion..] [“No, it's not that Master..."] [“Yes Master.”] - To avoid confusion, you could put commas before names and titles ("today, Shion") (that, Master) (Yes, Master).
I don't know if the way you write quotes is a difference in style, but I was always taught to count dialogue tags as in the same sentence as the dialogue. For example, [“Master, it is time for you to wake up! There is so much to do today, you must not forget your duties to Miss Lucia now.” A maid tells me.] should look like "...now," a maid tells me."
In case you didn't know, you can find these quotes by pressing the "Ctrl" and "F" keys at the same time.
One thing that isn't really a fault for this chapter but a comment nonetheless, is that Starr seems like one of those "perfect" characters with little to no faults or room for personal improvement. It may be a stylistic choice or perhaps he does faults and we simply have yet to see them, but I thought I'd mention it.
However I will also include your portrayal of Dr. Animus as a positive point, since you did a good job of naturally showing what kind of person he is. Since "a white dress shirt, a light blue tie, gray dress pants, and my personal suit jacket with the House Animus emblem sewn onto the upper sleeves" is just his informal, everyday clothes, he comes off as someone who is very professional and serious about his work. We also know that he has manners, based on how he ate, and likes all his servants equally. He seems humble too, given he said that he doesn't like making big entrances. If he does have faults it will be interesting to see what they are, which adds to the aspect of mystery.
I wonder where Starr's family is. He mentioned his dad once, but the servants are all practically worshipping him as their master, so his father must not be around, either he's dead or it's Starr's mansion. It also brings up the question of how old Starr is.
Something else that keeps us readers interested (unless I'm just clueless) is whether Starr is the one who raped Tienge and Shion and turned them into cat girls, since the description says that they were created through his life's work. But Tienge implied that they didn't know who did it...
Each of the characters has their own personality: Dante seems a bit cheeky and at times immature, but gets the job done when needed. Tienge talks before she thinks, and it's as if her ears and tail made her more animalistic. But Shion is more like Starr, except that she looks a bit cynical from how she scolds Tienge. It'll be interesting to read about the others and see how they interact with each other. Also, what kind of babies Starr and Lucia would make together ;)
That's all I have to say for this comment. Let me know if you have any questions, or if I can clarify anything.

Thank you for your praise and your criticism. I appreciate your thoughts on the story's first chapter and the surprising amount of information you were able to learn. Bringing the typos to my attention really help me out, so don't worry about putting it lightly.
You are correct in assuming that Starr feels like a perfect character, but this only serves to hide a growing evil in him that is referenced in later chapters. He also has reasons of his own to be the so-called 'best master' of House Animus, so that will most likely be another defining feature to him. Starr's age is revealed in Chapter 5, but it doesn't exactly have an effect on the story; though if you still wish to know, Starr is 23 years old.
I noticed your speculation on Starr's family and I can understand why there is a desire to know. However, this is just another part of the mystery that is Starr Animus and his parents will be mentioned more from chapter 5 onwards. Please pay attention to Dante especially, since there is a unique reason he is allowed to be so informal towards Starr. Starr's parents made him who is now, so keep that in mind.
On the subject of Tienge and Shion, when I first posted this story here, it actually started with an M-rated prologue that I mentioned in the author's notes in chapter 1. The prologue is available upon request, but it is not quite necessary for the story; it only provides insight to Starr's character. Another noteworthy fact is that Starr and Lucia are the only ones involved in that experiment, so it also brings their relationship into question.
I'm glad that you enjoyed the characters in the story so far; there can only be more to add from here. You were correct in all of your assumptions, which is exactly the result I hoped for. The other characters in the story are just as memorable, so I await your observations on them as well. Be aware that Lucia is not the only woman who may/may not hold affection for Starr, since her true feelings are not yet revealed.
If you would like to know anything else about the universe or some of the characters, please send me a message and I would be happy to answer them.
