Butternut Drumlin is a spoon-shaped hill that exists within a designated parkland area known as Jaybury Common, but it has long been a point of contention between ambitious real estate developers and the local nature lovers. Many protests against the builders have been organized by a determined young teen named Marchelle Clairen. She and her fellow "Guardians" of the Common are joined by a group of Elves and Faeries led by Chief Councilor Sparrond Sleepwinter, a tiny light-being who has chosen the girl as Primary Human Contact for his people. She possesses an uncanny ability to perceive Elves and to hear their voices, but in order to save the surrounding land for Elves, Faeries, and Humans alike she must convince her friends and neighbors of the importance of preserving the Sacred Land.
