Purgatorio

Two years on,

The words still ring

That rang out then

In sombre voice

To toll for all

The friendship that then

Died upon the ground.

Two years on,

From deepest valley

Floor, wherein you

Pushed me, still

I climb to earth

Through all the harshness

That you left me.

Two years on, and

Still the roughness

Of the ground leaves

Marks upon my hands that

Bleed from thorns that

Sit upon the branches

That I climb.

Two years on,

The tears that once

I shed for you and

Shed for all our

Friendship then that

Died still leave their

Moisture down

My face.

And two years on,

I see you run with

All your strength

Through fields of

Brightest corn,

In summer’s glow

Now blessed as all

Around you laugh

With joy and celebration.

And two years on, I still

Can see the walls of

All my canyon climb

Above my head,

And towering above them

Lies the surface where

I stood one night as

Once you pledged your

Loyalty, as once I pledged then

Mine upon a freezing winter night.

And two years on,

I wonder if this harshness

That I travel will ever

Lead to purity, as

Purgatory lead to highest heaven.

And two years on,

I see you laughing

In the heights above,

And I wonder if your

Heaven will abide,

And if these valley floors

That two years past became

My home will keep me,

My purgatory purging me

Of the sin of happiness

You saw within me.
