The Devil and I

On a night that was so bitter and cold.

While I slept uneasily in my bed.

My body was tense in a perfect fold.

A friendly voice whispered in my head:

“My! My! Look at you, you clever child!

Curled up in your bed, beaten and afraid!

Why let them break a spirit so wild?

Find yourself, wherever you’ve been laid!”

Oh, Satan now I take your words to heart.

I died so young at the hands of my peers.

I asked God for help; well that wasn’t smart!

Let down and betrayed; swallowed by my fears.

I took your hand and I never asked why.

So goes the tale of the Devil and I.
