A large comet has struck the surface of the Earth. No major damage is expected, as it was in a desert and the diameter of the rock was only 5 feet. However, a strange green glow emanates from within. Radiologists are examining it for any radiation, but as of now, none has been reported. The only noticeable thing is that the air around it is cooling very rapidly.

The Earth’s weather patterns have suddenly been thrown out of balance. The deserts are almost 200 degrees hot and northern areas like Siberia have dipped to
-200 degrees cold. Meteorologists are perplexed and are struggling to discover the cause for this. Luckily, large urban cities have not been affected.

Canada and Northern Europe have completely frozen over. The lucky people who woke up early escaped before they froze to death like some of their more unfortunate fellows. The survivors are being evacuated into the southern part of the world, while people in New York and other northern states have been told to evacuate. I’m taking my supplies with me. Medical skills could be needed in these bizarre times.

All my friends and neighbors have all gone into Florida, but I chose to stay a little to the north of there, in Georgia. The whole world is suddenly experiencing climate change, hot as well as cold. As if that wasn’t bad enough, a strange disease had cropped up in the milder areas, infecting and killing a person within 24 hours. Globally, the combined death toll from heat, cold, or disease is now 1 billion people. I must find a safe place to live.

I spent two days in a forest, doused in nonstop rain. It seems the climate change isn’t a change at all, merely an exaggeration of a certain place’s most extreme weather conditions. That doesn’t make it any better, however. All my research and this journal were kept fairly dry, however. I’ve found an abandoned house, which seems to be surrounded by a halo of blue sky. This could be okay to stay in for a few days.

Another couple has found this house. Their names are Stefano and Marzia Johansson. They are apparently Italian, siblings, and are stranded in the U.S. because of flight cancellations. They came across this house when running from their hotel, which had caught fire in the heat. This should be an interesting stay. In other news, there appears to be no electricity in the house, and light can only be obtained with candles and matches.

By now, 5 more have joined our trio, making us a troupe of 8. Food is difficult to get at the best of times, and we’ve taken to hunting to get it. Some of the members of our party are recreational hunters, and have a few guns and one bow with a few arrows. We’ve saved all the ammo for emergencies, and used the bow and arrows to hunt for the moment. We also take turns going for water in a nearby stream, which is also unaffected by the terrible things in the outside world. Speaking of outside,

Someone has disappeared from the group. Lily Kjellberg was going for water, and she hasn’t come back yet. It’s been over two hours, and her brother Felix is going crazy with worry. He’s been twisting his ring all night. I’ve sent Stefano out to look for her, but he hasn’t returned. It’s best if we all go out in pairs from now on.

Stefano and Lily are still missing. Everyone is extremely worried, Marzia and Felix in particular. It’s been decided that anyone who goes off of the property of the house needs a weapon and a partner. The next person in line was Jamie Penney, and she took along her friend Macy. It’s been about ten minutes since they left.

Jamie and Macy haven’t come back either. So, that makes Stefano, Lily, Jamie, and Macy on the list of missing people. There is something off about this house, trouble in paradise. This is odd.

None of us have dared to go out of the house. We keep watch by the door throughout the night, and are on edge in the daytime. I’m concerned about Felix and Marzia. They’ve been very quiet lately. Our food and water are running dangerously low.

Felix is gone. He left during the night, by climbing down the wall from the upstairs window. Another to the list.

James Share, Marzia and I are the only ones left of our group of eight. We all went out together, to get supplies. We could find the others, too. Or Felix. We gave up after about half a day of looking. But before we turned back onto the pathway to the house, I saw the glint of Felix’s ring upon green fingers. I stepped towards them, but then they were gone.

Chapter: 1
I found the use of a daily diary or news report very interesting as a way of telling the story. I also felt that the suspense was well built as the conditions on Earth worsen with each of Luna Brown's entries. There were many unanswered questions at the end of the chapter, which I think keeps the reader wanting to hear more about the mystery. Overall, an excellent chapter, and I encourage you to develop the story further.
