Homecoming

Andrew was excited. He was home again. There was only one more flight before he was home with his sister, and in a few days he’d take a flight to the UK to see his girlfriend, Julie, and his children. Julian and Vivian had been born while he was still in Afghanistan. He was looking forward to holding his children for the first time.

The airport was crowded at this time of day; everywhere he turned there was someone else who wanted to shake his hand, take a picture with him, thank him for his service to their country. It was trying on his patience to be stopped every two feet, but he would grin and bear it because he was almost to his gate.

He listened to the cacophony of the airport as he walked. He heard old friends having a chance encounter; families being reunited; the meeting of random strangers forming new friendships. He heard the cacophony of life. One particularly excited child was yelling “Da! Da!” somewhere behind him. As he listened, there seemed to be two children yelling rather than one, and they seemed to be moving closer and closer.

Andrew turned to watch and was shocked by what he saw.

“Da!” There in front of him and running unsteadily toward him were his own two children. They smiled brightly when he looked at them and held their arms out to be held. Andrew knelt down and picked them up, holding his children close for the first time.

People were cheering, applauding, taking pictures, shooting videos; Andrew didn’t care. His babies, his twins, were here with him for the first time. He didn’t think he could get any happier. Then…

“Hey there, soldier.”

He looked up to see Julie standing there calmly as though she was supposed to be here; in North Carolina, and not over in the UK. “What are you doing here?” he asked, standing up. The twins were peppering his cheeks with kisses, and people were still staring, but he only had eyes for the beauty in front of him.

Julie chuckled easily, putting her arms around his neck. “I wanted to see you sooner,” she said, pecking his lips. “So… I bought a few tickets to come see you!” Andrew grinned and kissed her again.

“Well, I’m glad you could come.”

The four of them made their way to their gate, Vivian and Julian chattering away in their father’s arms. Julie smiled contently, thinking of how Drew would react When she told him that she didn’t intend to go back to the UK.

And Andrew? Andrew was grinning from ear to ear. After losing so much of his family, he finally had a chance to build a new one.Homecoming
