It all started about a month ago...
'The day was dank and rainy. Just like yesterday and the day before that… Spring weather isn’t as wonderful as people always describe it as. I can only see this disgusting world as consistently gray and dark.. With clouds always hovering over me, becoming more dense with every step I take..’ Three little kiddies laughed as they ran past the blinded woman, seeming as if they had but a care in the world.
“I was like that for a brief time..” She spoke as if someone was closely listening, walking down the rain drenched sidewalk.
“Why did things have to be this way?” She questioned herself, letting the words fly around her with every step before she finally paused to answer her own question.
“I’m not too sure about that myself..” She sighed heavily, slowly seating herself on the ground.
“My name is Kit. And I am the epitome of misery.” She sunk into the ground and stared into the nothingness of her headband of which covered her eyes.
‘When I was a child, I started to slowly be blinded by an unknown disease.. As I aged, people shunned me with the thought that I was merely a contagious, walking infection.’
Kit felt a breeze coming from her left and faced against the wind from that direction.
‘My only comfort is nature.. The relaxing, earthly breeze is the only thing in this world that makes me feel...human.’
Her mouth cracked a very timid, but noticeable smile that lit up her innocent face.
Suddenly, she heard yelling, followed by multiple hits and then a cry of agony. Kit immediately jumped up and ran towards the distressing noises. It was amazing how much more she could hear when she had to rely on that sense almost completely.
She ran down the sidewalk and took a turn into an alleyway. Needless to say, she stumbled upon a fight unlike anything she had ever encountered. Two older and more “official” looking men were basically torturing another young man. One held the poor young man against the wall and the other proceeded to punch him continuously in the abdomen.
In almost a flash, Kit quickly jumped the man from behind and drew him away from the boy.
“Take that, you son of a bitch!” Kit blinded him with her own hands and he ran straight into the wall, knocking himself out. She jumped back up and began to make her way towards the other man, looking none too pleased. He dropped the boy on the ground and ran off, leaving his unconscious friend behind.
Kit approached the young boy and offered her hand out to him.
The young boy looked up at her in a blank expression.
“Why did you do that?” He asked, quietly regretting his question already.
“Because you would have been done for if I hadn’t showed up.” Kit automatically answered, unphased by him.
He smiled at the way she reacted.
This was going to be an interesting day.
After all was said and done, they sat down against the wall and talked for a little while. The boy’s name was Leuthar Axel Eisenhower, whom prefered to be called Axe, and he had a few similarities with Kit.
For one thing, they were both shunned from society as kids, and now, the two of them remained loners in a society of conformity.
“So, Kit.. Why is that headband over your eyes still? Can’t you take it off?” Axe asked.
“...” Kit touched the side of her headband, unsure how she would explain it to him.
“If you don’t want to tell me, that’s fine.” Axe realized he had overstepped a boundary.
“No, it’s fine, really,” Kit tilted her head up and felt the caress of the wind once again.
“I wear it because I feel...safe with it on. I can’t really explain it.”
“Hm. In a way, I understand.” He replied, holding back the urge to smile. Axe wasn’t the kind to enjoy anyone's company, but this was an exception.
"So Axe, can I ask a question now?" Kit decided it was time to infer as to what his situation was.
"Depends on what it is." He didn't exactly like it when people asked him questions, but he figured that he owed something at the very least to the person who saved his life.
"Why were those men attacking you?"
There it was.
He knew this was going to come up sooner or later in the conversation.
"Uh well.. See, it's a long story.." He tried excusing the question every which way he could.
"I have time." She smirked and made herself comfortable on the ground she sat on.
"Alright... Sooo.. I'm kind of.. Not an anarchist per say but-"
"A person who doesn't exactly agree with the government and how they run things?" Kit finished his sentence for him.
"That." He nodded. It was odd how she understood him so well.
"I was actually thinking about leaving, but.." Axe was interuppted by Kit once again.
"They don't want you to leave?" There it was again! How did she understand such a situation?
"How do you keep doing that?
"Doing what?"
"How did you guess the situation I was in? Did they send you, too?!" He frantically stood up, unable to comprehend what he'd do if he had been compromised.
"Calm down, I just understand what you're going through. You're not the only one who has it tough."
Axe looked back at her headband and took a deep breath. He had obviously blown things out of proportion.
"I'm sorry. I didn't mean to go off on you like that, it's just that you're the first person who's actually understood this kind of thing.." 'Without betraying me, of course..' He thought the rest to himself.
"It's alright. If it helps, you're the first to not run away in fear."
"Why would I?"
"Because the rest of society thinks my blindness is some kind of disease, okay? There, I said it!" Kit crossed her arms and turned away from him.
"Oh, I-I didn't know, I'm sorry.." Kit sighed. She took a breath and calmed down.
"It's fine, I'm sorry I snapped. It's just a hard subject for me."
Axe could understand why.
And perhaps, she could understand his situation, too.
"Kit, I haven't been completely honest with you."
"I know, but that's natural. I wouldn't completely trust a stranger either."
"Well... The thing is I'm kinda running away from the government for a few other reasons, too.. They've done nothing but put me through hell since day one." He began to tell her his ultimate tale of time.
"They just have no care for anyone but themselves, so I tried to put a stop to it. Vigilante style. And that's why my friends call me Axe, because I'm almost a literal weapon against them all." He even remembered the day his friends recruited him to their team, the same day he received the infamous nickname.
"That's quite the story there. Does it have a good ending?"
"You tell me."
"Then I guess we're still waiting for one, aren't we?" Kit chuckled at her own joke.
"I guess so." He smiled as well and noticed the clouds in the sky begin to disperse. He hadn't had a conversation like that in ages. It was rarity to find someone as understanding as Kit in their society, especially with how much he stood out from the normalcy of their world.
"You're in luck, Axe." She finally said.
He raised an eyebrow.
How exactly was he lucky right now?
"I would like to run off, too. From this hateful place and all the idiots it harbors."
Whoa there.
This was happening a little bit too fast.
"Are you sure about that? I mean, don't get me wrong, this place is full of assholes, but you have a chance to make it here. Don't throw it away."
"And what chance is that? The chance to be thrown into a room for the rest of my life or the chance to roam the streets by myself, trying to find reason here?"
"Well, when you put it that way..."
"So please, take me with you. I can be a powerful asset to have around."
Now, Axe had a great opportunity at hand here. She did save his life after all... So, that already proved just what she was capable of, even just from that moment.
"I really want to leave this place behind. I have no use staying, please let me come with you."
"I don't know.."
"Please think about it, I-"
She was interuppted by the sound of racing footsteps. A man in full uniform approached them, pointing a gun at their direction.
"Hold it right there, you two! You're under arrest for assaulting an officer!"
Axe looked at Kit.
"Deal." He said with a smirk on his face.
It was happening.
Axe tackled the man to ground and knocked him unconscious as soon as his head hit the pavement.
"We need to scram, and quick, he could have backup." He remained kneeled over the body.
Alas, Axe spoke far too soon. Two more officials came forth and held their weapons close. Axe looked over his shoulder to find Kit and it seemed he had been abandoned.
The two officials pointed their weapons towards Axe and the last thing he could think was that he was just back to square one.
Or was he?
A loud cracking noise sounded from behind the officials and they completely collapsed thereafter.
Kit had been behind them, holding her whip close.
"Let's go." She said in a stern tone. He nodded and complied, running out of the possibly infiltrated alley with Kit beside him.
They quickly walked down the street, trying not to be deemed suspicious in any way, but no matter, another official found them and quickly started to follow them. Kit was the first to sense this and told Axe, who proposed that they lose the guy and go underground for the time being.
They ran through an incoming crowd of people and lost the man completely.
"Let's go to my friends house, I guarantee he can help us 'go underground'." Axe said.
"I hope so. What do we do after?"
"We'll figure it out when we make it outta here." Axe replied as they approached a door to a small apartment building. He pressed a button and they were buzzed into the building.
As they walked up the first flight of stairs, Kit remained quiet and on guard. She couldn't help but feel like something would go wrong if she didn't. Axe, on the other hand, thought over his decision to bring her with him. Definitely not what he had planned, but he knew she needed it just as much as he did: The feeling of liberation.
They reached his friends apartment and gave the door three knocks. After about a minute, the door opened and a young lady had answered the door. She was about 5"5', dark eyes, and even darker hair. The young woman took one look at Axe, then Kit and remained very neutral.
"I brought someone along. Hehehe.." Axe scratched the back of his head due to the awkward situation.
"I noticed. Come on in." She said, looking at Kit as they both entered the apartment.
Axe sat Kit down on the couch and took a seat next to her.
"This is Kit and-"
"You don't have to explain." She interuppted.
Kit listened, intrigued as to how this would play out.
"Who are you?" Kit tried to put a name to the voice.
"We lived in the same orphanage together, Kit. You might not remember me because we never really knew each other. I remember you though." The young woman spoke honestly.
Kit stayed quiet and didn't think twice about the girl. Axe decided to bring them back to the subject of their arrival.
"Anyways, we need to get out of the country. Tonight."
"Whoa, you told me you weren't going through with this until next week, nothing is ready and we still need to plan where you're gonna go afterwards. The plans aren't even done and you've already brought someone else on our team!" She excused, sounding horribly over-stressed.
"Can you get them done tonight?"
"Oh god, who did you manage to piss off now?"
"Just a few cops, but they didn't really start to catch on until we knocked out a few of their own." By "we", he really meant Kit.
"Axe, what the hell?! Now I really need to get working.."
"..I'm sorry."
"It's alright, just...gimme a few hours, I should be done by then." She sighed, already exhausted at the sound of all the work she was going to have to do.
Kit and Axe helped out as much as they could, giving her small bits of information she could work with.
Time had passed quicker than it should have and by the time the young woman was finished with the papers and all, it had reached midnight.
"Here's everything, and god speed, you two." The young woman handed over a small bag filled with mostly papers and wished the two the best of luck.
They left the apartment as quickly as they arrived and walked out into the dark, empty streets.
Neither knew where they were going as far as outside of the country. It was a mystery what the day after would fare to them; They could be wanted for their crimes, caught, and thrown into a jail cell forever or they would somehow escape they're problems together and start over.
"Hey, Axe?"
"Yeah?"
"What will we do when we get out of here?"
"We simply keep on living." Axe said quietly.
The two walked farther down the street, passing through the fog of the nights mist and disappearing from the sleeping city.
