Amber has waist long brown hair. It contains very light red highlights that cannot be seen often. Her eyes, like her mother’s, are a very light blue with an explosion of silver around her pupil. Amber was an honor student and ran track. Most believed her life was good but they didn’t know. They didn’t know.
Her dad worked at Lowe’s. He did hunting with a few of friends as a hobby. Amber’s mother and Auntie had both died when she was seven. That’s when everything she knew turned for the worst. Her dad drank and spiraled into such a deep depression there was no return. That was the biggest problem. The drinking.
It often ended with Amber fleeing the house. She’d always come back to her dad crying on the sofa, or in the kitchen. Amber knew that her dad couldn’t take it. After all, it was his wife and sister who died. Died in the woods.
Over the years her dad's drinking was a roller coaster ride. He had a low point where he drank the whole casing of beer and then the next week he didn't drink an ounce. He had quit the AA meets and then rejoined. He was up then down, out then in, and everything in between. The point is he tried. Amber loved him for it. He tried hard. If only he visited the graves maybe he could find closure but he refused every time.
She let it go. She knew that he never would. At times Amber had found him clinging to one of her mother's exotic dresses. She had quite the sense of style. They were always so colorful, full of yellows, oranges, blues, and so on. Each from a different culture. As long as she could remember she was inspired by her soul's freedom, the curiosity, and the life that spread throughout her and into other people's lives.
The woman Amber never really knew was her role model but she wouldn't know anything about her. Amber remember the feelings and the colors and the smiled but that was all. Just a faded sense.
It was around eleven when he came bursting through the front door. Amber was up in her room doing last minute homework when the crash sounded. At first she thought to run downstairs to see if everything was alright but the years of enduring this had taught her something. Lock the door. So she did, but it didn’t settle well with him when she did that.
The pounding grew louder and louder until she knew everyone could hear it. Without thought she jumped out of her window. Landing in the shrubs beneath her window Amber quickly took off down the road. Doing track had helped her strengthen her body. To endure longer. Move faster.
Eventually she moved off of the roads and into the woods. Unsure of if he was following her or not. Unsure of where she was. Amber rested against a pine. The bark lightly scraped against exposed skin as she slid to the ground. Her heart was pounding so hard in her chest she thought it’d burst. The sky let out a growl before it let go. The rain poured like glass shards on her exposed skin. Her blue t-shirt was no help and her jeans felt heavy on her tired legs.
The water ran down her body letting the ground she sat on stick to her. She sat there and cried. The last time she cried she was seven. Even then it was only a short cry of pain and then it died out into a solitude of numbness.
Amber heaved as she tried to let air come into her burning lungs. The tears blurred her vision and mixed into the rain that covered her face. Amber wanted her dad to be whole again. To smile. To laugh. To be him again. So she cried out all the pain, all the sorrow, all the anger. Amber's breath came out in quick short puffs of air. Eyes drooping she slumped against the tree and allowed her head to roll slightly to the side.
With a violent shake she woke. Her dad was in his camo outfit, gun slung over his shoulder. His eyes were drooping as he struggled against sleep. The dark circles were clearly defined under his eyes. The red puffiness was a clear sign of his regret.
“Amber? Darling?” Gently he caressed her cheek. Amber sat up to see the others looking at her. They were worried...over me. Her dad pulled her into a tight embrace as whispered apologizes filled her ears.
The sweet moment didn’t last long. As her dad held her by the elbow so she could catch her balance a low growl sounded. Blocking their path was a giant black wolf, the size of a race horse. It crouched low as another growl was emitted. The hunters aimed their guns.
Amber’s dad shoved her back against a tree. Pulling out his rifle he prepared to fire. Determination lite a fire in his weary eyes. Pulling the trigger he was the first to fire. It grazed it’s shoulder before it sprang. Blood went everywhere and screams as flesh was ripped filled Amber’s ears.
She should have ran. She should have stood up and taken off. Instead she crouched on the ground with the tree as support. Amber failed at trying to stop her fear and the shaking in her body.
Then just as fast she heard the footsteps of boots scatter off in all directions silence filled the air. Peeking through her eyelids she scanned the area. The wolf lied on the forest floor, staring at her with unwavering eyes. Gulping Amber shakily stood up, using the tree for support. Taking large gulps of air she began to steadily move away from the predator. Though it seemingly did not like the space she was creating between them.
Getting up from its position it trotted over to where Amber stood. Amber shot up her arms to cover her face and turn away from the possible incoming attack. Yet nothing came. Instead warm arms encircled her and pulled her into a tight embrace. Gasping she looked up to find liquid gold irises staring down at her. “I’m sorry I scared you. I won’t hurt you.”
The boy, no the man had a tan skin and black hair fell dripping into his eyes. The warmth emitted from him lessened the cold in her bones. Where he touched her electric sparks flew through her body making her tremble slightly in his arms. Snapping out of the trance and breathing heavily she continued to look at him, confused on how he was here and the wolf was not. He is the wolf…
Pushing him away she caught sight of his arm. The wound the bullet had left was already healed. Amber felt like she was drowning. She had no idea where her dad was and if he was alright and a wolf just turned into a human boy. “Did they hurt you?” Anger rose at the question. “Hurt me? They were helping me!!”
Crossing his arms in defense, “Really? Why’d you flee the house then? Why did he push you back to roughly huh?” Clenching her jaw she yelled, “Why on earth were you stalking me for?! That would be none of your business. You know nothing!!! And he accidently pushed me too hard but it was to get away from you!”
Huffing he yelled, “Really!?” Amber’s anger rose to its max. “Yeah! Really! Go die in a hole!!” Ready to cry Amber turned and took off towards where the hunting group came from. Bursting from the woods she saw that a truck was still there. Her dad’s.
A few seconds later a man came from the woods. He had a long peppered beard and his sleeve was torn with slight blood leaking out. “Rich! You okay? where’s my dad?!” The older man was breathing hard and simply handed over keys belonging to her dad’s Ford.
“You’re dad and Dave took the guys to the hospital, I was told to find you. You’re dads alright, just a few cuts and bruises, him and Dave were the lucky ones.” Pushing her to the car he hopped in the passenger’s side while Amber started the car. Rich had insisted to be taken home where his wife took care of him.
From there she headed home. Walking into the house she saw her dad sitting quietly on the floor next to the stairs. He stood up slowly, the tears brimming his eyes. Amber wasted no time running up to him for a hug which he accepted.
“Imma horrible dad arent I?” Amber desperately shook her head. He’s never hurt her in anyway just simply yelled at her for every flaw, it was a slap in the face but he never turned violent. One time she hit him and even then he didn’t strike back.
“It won’t fix a thing I know but I love you and I’m sorry for scaring you last night. I was so happy when I found you. I drove all last night and by dawn I had got them to help me search the woods. Thank, God, we found you when we did. It didn’t hurt you did it?” Amber stayed silent soaking in her dad’s words. No sound came from her she just hugged him tighter.
"I love you too, Daddy.”
You’re not a horrible dad. You’re perfect. Just perfect.

Review and enjoy!!
Amber’s POV
I was surrounded. My two best friends Sam and Arica caught me in the cafeteria. They sat on either side of me, blocking my escape. Sam could be louder and jump to conclusions while Arica was the more quiet observant one. They stayed quiet at first until Arica nicely spoke up, “Are you okay, Amber?” They had this whole conversation preplanned. Crap.
“Yep,” I popped the ‘p’ trying to be less suspicious. “Really? What happened in the woods?” Sam finally spoke but she made no eye contact. “I went for a jog, got lost, that’s all.” Sam and Arica gave me the you’re-a-terrible-liar-look. I continued to eat my hamburger ignoring their glances.
They knew about my family issues. They knew everything. It was nice that they knew. I could rely on them to understand. I come in tired, angry, sad or upset, they instantly know. Sometimes I get this way from visiting or my dad. Snapping from my thought I finished my food.
I took a shaky breath and felt Arica's feathery grip on my shoulder. Comfort washed over me and I found myself renewed with a new strength. I sent a small smile their ways and an appreciated nod. I couldn't have surrounded myself with better friends.
The bell rang and I found myself easily weaving myself to class. My favorite class of the day, art. I took my usual seat by the wall in the back. My other classmates came in shortly after.
The teacher's nasal voice rang out, "Free period to draw. Use your time wisely." With those words she turned to her desk to work. Chatter filled the classroom and the sounds of pencil on paper rang in my ears.
I flipped open my sketch book and had started to draw random spirals on the page. The page by the end of class was over lapped in a bunch of swirls. The white sheet barely visible under the grey. I shut the book and followed everyone out into the crowded hallway.
As I turned the corner I was grabbed and led to the side. A boy about an inch taller than me stood before me. His dirty blonde locks were ruffled and fell onto his forehead. His blue eyes pierced mine with authority. Usually I would have been intimidated but I knew this kid. And he didn’t scare me at all. “Amber? I heard what happened. Are you alright?” I sighed.
His name was Eric. Most girls would drool over him, but not me. He’s been hitting on me for over two years now. Eric as gone as far as to place chocolates, love letters, and roses in my locker. Sure it was romantic except for the fact he’s my neighbor, thats just down the road from me, and I find him a bit creepy.
Such as how he knows my schedule, middle name, and even my birthday. You’re probably thinking that I’m not giving him a chance and knowing these things isn’t creepy but no one knows these things other than my friends and the office. So how did he find out?
He won’t tell me. I turned down his dates politely at first but I got tired and now I just ignore him. He just can’t take no for an answer. I’ve seen him with some of the girls here. Even when he was dating he continued to ask me out. Plus I find no attraction to him at all. He seems, almost, ugly to me. Maybe thats just me.
I guess I've got more of a penchant towards dark haired guys with brown like eyes. No too dark brown now just a nice light brown. Being me of course he can't have matching brown hair so I guess black would be perfect. Some how my description seems to match someone I know...oh well.
“I’m fine.” I barely spoke the words through tight clenched teeth. “You-” “I said I’m fine. Get to class Eric.” I brushed by him and headed down the hall to my intended destination. I caught some girls whispering and giving me a hateful stare. I just rolled my eyes, they were like lost puppies following him around and I wasn’t going to be one of them. I entered my last class. History. It isn’t all bad but I don’t want to continue watching the rest of that disturbing asian video.
I didn’t know what it was about but I looked at the wrong time to watch a guy get his head cut off. Little too graphic for me. So I sit down and entertain myself with the blank tan wall. The lights were cut off and the glow from the TV filled the darkness. The sound became fuzzy as I tuned it out. I thought about my dad and the boys in the hospital. It wasn’t too bad and they’re all doing fine after getting stitched up. Thinking about the man-wolf who caused all of it made my blood boil.
Hurt me?! Hurt me!! God, he’s a total- UGH!!!! Let’s think of my next drawing. If I just- Breaking my thoughts were the worst words possible,“We will now have a short quiz on the video.” Wasn’t royally screwed.
Mr. Hawkins had lectured us about paying attention in class before letting us go. I moved my way to my locker. I shoved the box of sweets in the next locker over and proceeded to pack up. After that I made my way downstairs I noticed two figures in the lobby. Arica’s red velvet and Sam’s dirty blonde hair stuck out to me in the crowd. They were talking to what seemed like a few other people. I proceeded to slip past them and head out to the porch.
The teacher stopped the cars letting me and a few others cross to the parking lot. I made a mad dash for my green Jeep. Tossing my bag into the passenger seat I proceeded to start the Jeep and head out. With little traffic I made it home in twenty minutes. My dad’s truck was already there which was surprising. I got out and headed inside. There he was seated on the couch watching some game that was on.
“Hey, dad, what are you doing home?” Looking at me he heaved himself up and pulled me into a bear hug. “Dying slowly down here!!” He laughed as he pulled away. “I’m going to try to be better. I know I’ve said it before but I’ll do it this time I swear.”
“I believe you.” After hugging I took my stuff upstairs and asked to go to the fishing trail. He said it was fine and I headed out. The trail was a fifteen minute drive from home. I passed a few hay fields and after turning onto a dirt pathway I parked in the spacious area. Climbing out I took off towards the trail and down to the river. I sat there listening to the fish splash in the water, the water run along the bank, and the birds in the trees. I listened to nature itself. It was ruined when a certain person came out. I held in my anger.
“Hey.” He looked down at me. His white t-shirt clung to him tightly. The grey jeans were lightly ripped at the knees. “Hi.” The man sat next to me but not too close. Scratching the back of his head nervously he spoke up again, “I never introduced myself properly. I’m Rex.” Rex held out his hand and I shook it, “Amber.”
“About that night-” I sighed irritably. Rex turned to look at me, he was slightly annoyed. “What?! I haven’t said barely a sentence and you’re act pissed off already.” I stood and turned to walk away. Yelling behind me as I went, “I am pissed off.” I heard him run up behind me, “For what?!”
"You hurt my dad's friends! They are like family to me," I felt the tears building up. "You can't just apologize for that!!" His arms wrapped around me and I felt comforted. Strong on my resolve I pushed him away.
I would not let my hormones take over no matter how badly. Sure he's cute with his disheveled hair and puppy gold eyes. Not to mention hot. I swear he has a six Packard I've only hugged him twice. Shaking my head I summoned my strength.
“Leave me alone!” He replied with a why and I felt my blood boil. Why? Why?! Why!! UGH!!!!!!! I ignored his presence and constant nagging. I reach my car and was ready to jump in as he finally yelled, “FINE!!”
“Fine!!!!” I slammed my door closed. I froze and looked in my mirror to see him a ways away. Every fiber in my being shuddered at the dominant look on his face. Shaking slightly I sped off towards the road.
Looking back into the rearview mirror I watched as he let out a big breath and a sorrow look crossed his face. I felt my heart twist with my own sadness. I couldn’t understand why but I felt bad. I should have let him talk. I let out a breath and turned onto the main road.
Why do I feel so guilty? I continued down the road and soon turned into my drive in no time. I walked in and headed upstairs to do my homework. I couldn’t focus as my gut twisted and that stupid little voice kept nagging at me to apologize. That I should hear him out. Why should I? He put four guys in the hospital! He hurt people who were helping me. He freakin stalked me! I found myself thinking something I wished I hadn’t thought. I wish I could ignore.
Rex...What a cute name.
Amber walked through the door of her bedroom and out into the hallway. Walking down the stairs she proceeded to the kitchen. Humming to herself she prepared herself a small roast beef sandwich with lots of mayo. Amber was ready to head back up when a loud knock occurred on the back door. No one ever knocked on the back door. Ever.
Cautiously she set the plate on the counter. Approaching the door, Amber slowly opened it and peeked out. There standing in all his broken pride stood Rex. He looked down at her with the best puppy look she'd ever seen. "Can I come in?" He stood awkwardly until Amber opened the door wider for him to enter.
"So, you need something?" Rex nodded slowly, his gaze never leaving the floor. Clearing his throat he shuffled his feet before looking up. "Amber, I'm sorry. It was stupid and unwise of me to do that and I know we didn't start off on a good foot but I'm here asking for forgiveness. I understand that they are family to you and I just...I..."
Amber stood slightly taken back from such an apology. "Of course, you don't have to. I should probably go now. See ya." Rex began to shuffle away and had begun to open the door.
"Rex, I guess... I forgive you and sure we can start over," smiling lightly at him, Amber had no clue why she did what she did but her heart reached out for him. Maybe it was sympathy. Pity perhaps? Yet, none fit the description to Amber. It was something more deep. It was almost personal.
Amber brushed off those thoughts quickly. Rex's face lit up at her words and he gave her the biggest grin possible. With quick goodbyes and a wave, Rex headed out and Amber turned her attention to her almost forgotten sandwich.
The next day went by normally for Amber. Her math class was lectured about doing homework and paying attention in class. Arica was sick and Sam had skipped half the day for some odd doctor's appointment. Amber relaxed in her seat as she drove away from the prison. That day it had been decided to visit the graves. So, Amber headed to a nearby floral shop and picked out a couple of flowers. Leaving the shop she had noticed the sky darken and proceeded to speed up on her journey.
Getting to the cemetery Amber became hesitant. She loved her Auntie and mother but she's seen enough movies to freak her out. With deep breathes she slid out of the car and past the black gates. Moving as silently as possible, Amber eventually came to a halt at her destination. Two graves, side by side, stood in perfect craftsmanship. The marble was a dull gray which matched with the sky. Laying down the flowers for each of them, Amber spoke quietly as to not disturb the others resting.
She addressed both with a polite hello before talking about the weeks they had missed. Amber felt their presence, smiling, laughing, as her stories went on. Soon enough the sky let go and with a quick goodbye Amber dashed out of the cemetery and to the safety of her car. Starting up the engine Amber took off. Her destination, home.
When arriving Amber found it empty. Her dad should've been home at least an hour ago. Amber stood rock solid. Thunder crackled and lightning lit up her world as she realized where he was. The door swung open seconds later. Her dad stood, disoriented, his eyes misty. The alcohol rolled off his tongue like perfume.
Amber stood defeated at the sight of him. Tears stung her eyes as he collapsed into slumber on the couch. Shaking with uncertainty, Amber shut the door before sitting at the kitchen table and doing her work.
That night no noise came from the house. It was an empty silence. That next morning, it was worse. It felt like someone had died. The sorrow, regret, and grief filled the emptiness of yesterday. It was depressing that the house seemed to frown and the tree slumped into its roots.
"I'm sorry, Amber. The boys were all going and I said one beer but..." He sighed, knowingly understanding that his words meant nothing to his daughter. "You promised."
"And I'm trying, its not so simple." Amber slammed her fists on the counter. Tears pouring down, landing on her shaking hands. "You promised me." Without warning she grabbed her things, breakfast cold on the table, and left for school. Drying her tears quickly she felt lightheaded. Everything was just a haze, a routine she learned to do so robotically she didn't have to focus.
Amber was empty. Simply empty. Without thought she made her worst yet best mistake. She'll forever praise this moment.
Parking in her assigned spot she was greeted by Eric. Leaning against the now closed car door she waited as his arrogant and cocky smirk told her the future. He knew she was vulnerable. Eric knew what to do.
"Amber, one date and if you still hate me then I'll leave you alone." Not in the mood Amber brushed by with a mumbled fine. And so began the nagging questions of if they were dating and why she even accepted the offer. Why she didn't know. Maybe it was because deep down Amber knows that she'll forever hate Eric and he'll always be the dick head he was.
This date was a way to prove it. Then again as stated this was the mistake she'll forever praise.
Saturday, it was at five that evening that Eric was to pick her up. Amber wore a knee length navy sundress with pink stripes, the sleeves going down to her elbows. She wore black boots, a loose pink belt hung around her waist and diamond earrings. She lifted her hair into a tight high ponytail. A knock on the door down stairs sounded her date's arrival. Grabbing her purse she headed down the stairs and out the door.
Eric wore black jeans with a black dress shirt, he left the few top buttons unbuttoned. Smiling down at her he opened the passenger door, like a gentleman, before getting in himself. As they drove Amber was curious as to where he was taking her. Amber however didn't question him.
That was until she noticed the big houses they began to pass. It didn't take long before she realized exactly what was going on. Only it was too late. He pulled into the drive and waited for her by the hood. Getting out he was quick to grab her waist and tug her inside.
Amber couldn't pull away. Finally one of his friends distracted him and Amber weaves her way out of the drunk teenagers. Barely missing some of the hands that tried to grab her Amber quickened her pace. Squealing slightly when one skimmed her butt.
This time Amber sprinted for the door. Swinging the door open she jumped the steps. Finally away from perverted eyes she made her way to the sidewalk. Tired and hungry she let her feet guide her.
Sighing in irritation at her own stupidity, she stumbled slightly before leaning against a light pole . An unexpected friend found the sad stupid girl. A silver dodge pick up truck came rolling to a halt beside her. Rex's face could be seen through the rolled down window. He smiled before motioning her in. He wore a tight navy polo and khaki pants. Slightly too tight of a polo. Amber quickly peeled her eyes away barely missing the cocky smirk on his face.
After some persuasion Amber told him about Eric. Rex hummed softly as she talked. Finally he pulled into a semi-crowded Olive Garden. "Let me show you how a real gentleman acts," he politely opened her door and helped her down. He held her hand until they got to the door where he opened it and motioned her in. They sat down at a booth for two. "Order anything, you'd like."
After a couple of minutes the waiter came for drink orders before scurrying off. "So, what are you doing in town?" Rex smiled a toothy grin before shrugging his shoulders. Groaning and rolling her eyes Amber gave up on starting any sort of conversation. This just made Rex laugh. Which proceeded to irritate her further.
"Look on the bright side...we match!" Only then had Amber noticed. With her navy dress and his navy polo they did in fact match. Laughing lightly she shook her head. Rex grinned widely at her from the other side of the table.
The waiter came with bread sticks, a salad bowl, plates, and their drinks. Rex, being all gentleman like, put some salad and a bread stick on her plate. Amber rolled her eyes before saying a silent prayer and digging in. Amber had an internal debate about her food choice.
There was the delicious looking noodles with some white sauce and grilled shrimp...but it was around twenty dollars and Amber knew he wouldn't let her pay. Another meal she could do was grilled salmon with a side of veggies and rice, for only fifteen dollars. She continued to ponder until she felt a hand on her own. Looking up from the menu, she saw Rex smiling kindly at her. "Don't worry, I got this pick. Pick what you want."
In the end she ordered the one with noodles. "At least-" Amber stopped her suggestion when an intense gaze settled upon her. That was the end of the topic. Instead Rex asked about school, work, her friends, and so on.
He found that Amber, during the summer, would work at the lake about ten miles from the town she resided in. She worked at a beverage stand in the local water park. He avoided all questions about him. Amber became suspicious about his past and present. She barely knew him, knew he could turn into a wolf and with him avoiding questions it seemed like there was something sinister there.
"You're starting to sound like some runaway criminal." Amber' segues showed seriousness despite the small smile plastered on her face. Rex gulped nervously and looked down at the table. "Don't worry. I won't turn you in," Amber winked slyly. Rex blinked before breaking out into a dull roar of laughter.
"I'll tell you." Her curiosity got the better of her and she slowly leaned forward. "Or not..." Frowning she slammed her back against the seat and slumped down. Childishly she stuck her tongue out and turned to look at the various couples on the restaurant.
The feeling of this dinner being a date washed over her. Blushing lightly she fumbled with her hands. Would I go on a date with him? I mean sure bad start, bad meeting and all but...he's funny, cute, great personality, and not to mention freakin hot. A chuckle from the other side of the table had her snapping back to reality.
Rex had a sly smirk spread across his face that simply yelled trouble. And yet Amber felt excited by it. Pushing hormones aside she straightened back and crossed her arms. With smirk in place he mirrored her actions.
There food came out and the staring contest was put to an end. He paid for the bill and they walked out. Rex parked in her driveway, letting Amber out. As she reached the door she heard a car door slam shut. Looking back Rex came running up to her.
"Tomorrow at one I'll be around to pick you up. Wear casual. And yes it's totally a date," with that he turned and jumped inside his truck before speeding away. It took Amber a moment to realize what had happened. With a frustrated growl she opened the door and went inside. I didn't have the chance to respond! The nerve of that boy!
Despite what Amber had thought about Rex 'forcing' her to go on a date with him she got ready anyway. Wearing her favorite cotton blue button up and boot cut jeans, Amber left her hair down. There seemed no need for a purse so she stuffed her phone in her pocket before slipping on some tennis shoes.
Amber's dad sat on the couch watching baseball and drinking lemonade. "Going out be back soon." He nodded in response and Amber slipped out. She closed the door behind her and looked up to find Rex in a random t-shirt, jeans, and sneakers. He blinked a few times before smiling and gesturing towards his truck. Returning the smile Amber slid into the passenger seat.
"I would have thought there'd be more of a fight." Amber looked at him eyebrows raised. With a humph she turned to look out the window. Rex chuckled some before quieting down. The ride was quiet. They were on a country road heading to wherever Rex had planned this date. The trees cleared to show an intersection and a small diner. Rex quickly pulled in before opening the door for Amber.
The diner was a small, old fashioned one. It had the rotating class case of goodies, the red polished booth seats, and the white polished tables. The bar was the same as the tables but with a metal rim. Amber giggled at the sight. They chose a booth and waited for someone take their order. A teen came rolling out the double doors on roller blades. She had on black slacks and a blue t-shirt with the restaurant's name. She greeted them kindly.
"So...this is your type of restaurant, huh?" Amber nervously fiddled her thumbs. Rex had a small blush color on his already tan cheeks. He simply nodded before staring off at a nearby wall. The awkward silence filled the area quickly. Amber began to become extremely nervous, she didn't want to be akward or bore him, what was she suppose to do.
"Sorry if I'm quite it's just...uh..." Amber stifled a sweet laugh. Rex looked at her, curiosity ignited a fire in his eyes. He rested his head on his fist and let out a gentle curve of his lips. Their drinks arrived and silence filled the air. Small conversations started as they ate.
Rex paid for the bill despite Amber's loud protests. Again Rex opened the doors for her and they got back into the car. "I didn't want to talk about it in the diner so is it okay to talk about it now?" Amber nervously fiddled with her thumbs. Rex sat there staring at her, watching as she turned to look out the window. Rex calm face turned rigid with seriousness and he started the engine. Once the diner was out of sight Amber asked again. Rex only tightened his hold on the steering wheel before nodding.
"So you can change into this large wolf?" His whiting knuckles gave her a yes. Amber continued on. "You're not human..." He gave a short nod. "So...you're like stronger, faster, ect. than us?" He gave no response. Gently Amber's smaller hand rested on his. "Rex...pull over." Immediately at her command he pulled over. The roaring engine went silent and nothing could be heard. Amber pried his fingers off the steering wheel and lightly held them in hers. With a sweet smile she spoke, " Rex, please look at me. Talk with me. Its okay. I want to learn. I want to understand." With hope she squeezed his hand.
Rex refused to meet her eyes. "I'm not human. Yeah, I can change into a large wolf, I'm strong, fast, I can hear things miles away, smell things miles away. My sight is more enhanced. In every way. I'm not a human." Amber saw for the first time how broken a person could be. When someone finally admits something that they have known but never realized, it hits home. It brings a sense of lostness and disappointment. The change must have been gradual for him, he didn't even notice how different he was until I brought it up.
"Rex," on impulse Amber laid a hand on his cheek, she caused this. She needs to fix it. "You're stronger to protect, you can hear danger, and Rex, of course, your human," Amber paused for a moment before smiling, "Just a little special." Finally he looked up. "So what you're a big fat black wolf, makes no difference here...well maybe the fat part." At first he grinned but his face suddenly fell at the realization of what he had been called.
"Hey! Not cool, Amber!" They both laughed. "I wish you told me sooner. There's no reason to hid it okay? We are friends right?" Amber took all her willpower not to cringe at the word. Friend could never fit our odd ball relationship but it wasn't like we were more than that anyways. Right?
Amber missed how Rex slightly cringed and the shadow of disappointment crossed his face. Gulping he gave a small, almost unnoticeable nod in semi agreement. "Yeah you're right I can trust you. It's just I-"
"You don't wanna be rejected and you don't wanna lose me?" Smiling wide at how perfectly she read him he nodded. "Yeah I don't wanna lose you, Amber." Somehow those words had such a deep meaning to it. Amber turned away from them, they were in a friend way nothing romantic. Though her heart had a very big penchant to disagree with her reasonable mind.
After a moment Rex hung his head in an internal debate. "You can tell me. I'll listen and not gonna cry wolf to the townspeople, Rex," Amber winked at him in a playful way. Easily she lightened the dark tension in the car.
Rex sighed, "Amber, you have a right to know. I shouldn't hide it from you. I'm here for uh...mate reasons." For an unknown reason Amber's stomach dropped and her heart twisted painfully. Rex continued slowly, "You see I live three states away. My wolf was called here to this town. B-b-because my mate is here." Amber went stark white.
"You'd go three states for this mate? Wow." Rex chuckled. "Not something I can ignore." Amber grew still. "So, who is she?" Rex blushed slightly and awkwardly scratched the back of his neck. "You don't have to answer that, you know. I mean you like her right? You should be with her...not here..." Amber's quick and rushed response was swallowed into a small whisper. With the thickness in the air ready to be cut by a knife they sat silently.
Their had conversation ended in silent awkwardness and Rex drove her home. When they arrived Amber quietly thanked him. Rex could feel her pain it was so obvious. It excited him to no end that Amber wanted to be with him just as much. He'd still have to mark her to fully grasp her thoughts and emotions but that was for another day. She opened her door to get out but a hand stopped her.
"Amber," he slowly pulled her back into her seat. Amber's heart raced. It was wrong. He was destined for another and even if she pushed those hormones aside they planted a lovely romantic future with Rex in her head. His next actions sent her into a spiral of what can only be described as beautiful bliss.
Placing his large hand on her cheek Rex leaned in, "Amber. My mate, well...its you." Leaning in the rest of the way he lightly placed his lips on her.
Amber exploded inside. Her heart beat so fast, her brain stopped functioning and the only thing she could do was close her eyes and embrace the kiss full force. That was exactly what she did.
She was shocked. For the millionth time since the kiss she lightly touched her lips. His words repeatedly sang in her head. He crossed three states just for her. For her of all people. He has to be joking but then again… Amber’s friends noticed the change but didn’t question it. More like Arica held Sam back from interrogation torture. Amber slipped in and out of class just moving along with the day.
Art class came quickly and Amber found herself drawing for the Auction. It was a magnificent wolf. The black clouds blocked all light out. The wolf seemed mysterious yet threatening under the flashing light of a lightning bolt. The trees were seemingly blurred in the background. Gold was the only bright color other than the lightning above. For days Amber worked hard on the painting. She perfected it.
Her inspiration could only be the one person she denied it to be. Amber claimed that it was from a movie she saw that gave her the idea. Of course, what movie? Well she had no cover for that one. Arica and Sam were busy helping set up the auction. It was taking place in their gym.
The paintings would be on display for people to see and then after everyone settled into the bleachers they'd begin the bidding. The bidding always had a good cause behind it. Sometimes it goes to children hospitals or to a food drive.
Soon enough it was whisked away by her art teacher. Amber badly wanted the painting but she had no choice but to give it up. With very slight persuasion Amber’s dad agreed and there they were sitting amongst the rest of the people waiting for them to bring Amber’s painting. Finally it was presented. The bid started at ten.
“Come on dad! Please I need it back!” Amber’s dad tried but eventually he stopped. Fifty bucks for the painting didn’t seem worth it and he only had forty on him. Amber lost her painting to someone unknown to her in the crowd. Her father took her out to eat as an apology for the painting.
“I know you loved that painting but that man probably wanted it for his own reasons. Just know you made someone, or maybe someones, very happy people.” Amber groaned in frustration. After dinner they headed home. Her dad went straight to bed. His snoring filled the house seconds later.
Rolling her eyes Amber finished some last minute homework. Ten o’clock soon rolled around and Amber finally got ready for bed. Walking back into her bedroom she found her phone ringing on her desk. It was just about to fall off the edge. Running she dove just as it fell and caught it. Unfortunately she barely missed the edge of her desk skid slightly under it receiving some rug burns before her head the wall without mercy.
Answering with a pained hello and received a chuckle response. “What?!” Laughter, louder than before, was the only response. After a couple more minutes of very heavy breathing a familiar voice spoke. “Amber I’ll be picking you up Friday at five. Be ready to go alright?” She never responded as he hung up before she could.
Grinding her teeth together Amber threw her phone not too lightly on her bed. She shoved her books roughly into her bag and proceeded to pace about the room. After a while she plugged her phone in to charge and the hit pillow head first.
Freaking mutt. I’ll murder him if he ever hangs up on me again.
Just before her eyes closed an annoying sound echoed off her bedroom walls. Irritated could not describe how she felt. She grabbed her phone, ripping it off its charger, before answering.
"What?!" There was silence for awhile until a calm voice spoke. "Amber thats not way to treat a friend. I'm sorry for waking you but I noticed you've been off lately wanna talk?" Arica's sweet voice filled Amber with guilt. They agreed to meet after school over coffee at a small local cafe. With an apology from Amber, they said goodbye and hung up. Calmer now than before she placed her phone back where it belonged and snuggled into her pillow.
The sunshine was only half welcomed into her bedroom. With a groan she stumbled out and i to her closet. Grabbing jeans and a random Supernatural t-shirt Amber rushed out the door with toast and a quick air kiss to her dad. He sat there bewildered at his daughter's sudden actions. He was sitting calmly in his robe trying to enjoy his eggs when his daughter stole his toast, gave him an air kiss and sprinted out the door when she still had another hour before school. Blinking a couple of times he shrugged it off and continued to eat.
Amber was eager to talk to Arica and Sam. She had to talk to them. She didn't know who else to trust. That day was extremely boring. With a couple of quizzes and lessons that seemed like they'd never end, Amber was glad to be walking back to her car. Within minutes she was seated by Sam and Arica at the cafe.
Silence ticked on as they quietly drank their coffees. Finally Amber spilled out everything. She started with how she met Rex by the river and ended with the kiss he had given her. She left out the obvious things that should not be mentioned like how he's a huge wolf who so happened to be her said 'mate'. Honestly she still didn't believe him.
Sam squealed in delight that Amber has finally found someone. While Sam was torn between happiness and sadness, she didn't want her baby to grow up, Arica on the other hand was deadly quiet.
"Amber, just be careful." That was all she said. Be careful. Sam shifted the conversation to other matters but those words will forever haunt her. If anyone was to know, it was Arica. Arica was a beauty. She dated many before but they lasted only one date. Arica knew how they can deceive. Her sister was one who was deceived.
He had tricked her sister into a relationship that was based off of revenge on his ex. He ended it to get back together with the bimbo. Arica's sister has never been the same. She's better now than when they first had ended it. Amber remembers all the good things she would hear about him. She was disgusted when I heard the truth and Arica hated that man for it.
Amber snapped back to reality when asked about a second date. "This upcoming Friday after school. Why do you look so happy Sam?" Sam's grin spread wide across her face disturbed Amber. "I want to meet him." A fight soon arose of the matter. She desperately tried to hold them off but Sam was much more convincing and Arica took her side. Outnumbered and cornered Amber surrendered and said it was fine to do so.
They smiled sweetly as if it was Amber's idea the whole time. Rolling her eyes she thought about her and Rex's relationship. It's not like they dated or anything. Unless the diner counted. Which in her opinion did not count...but the kiss did so...the diner must count. Frustrated Amber stood to leave. Her friends did so as well.
With a quick good bye and a promise that would probably never be kept, Amber headed home. Their time took much of the afternoon and it was already six o’clock. Her father was passed out. The smell of alcohol could not be mistaken. She found three bottle on a near by table. He didn’t drink a lot. Thats a good start. Sighing Amber walked up stairs. Falling on her mattress, she couldn’t help but feel pumped for Friday.
7: Hurt On Both Ends
However as Friday came the giddiness and excitement vanished. Nervousness settled in and turned my stomach into knots. School passed by in a boring blur. Clearly I seemed stressed even when I laughed and smiled. I guess theres no use trying to get around them. They gave encouraging smiles before dragging me to the car and shoved me inside. I smiled lightly as they took off leaving me to sit in my Jeep.
Home was silent. My father must have been at work so I hurried up to get dressed. I was slipping on sneakers when a knock on the door caught my attention. I turned to see it was already five o'clock. Standing outside my front door was Rex. His muscles flex as he led me to his truck. The white t-shirt did not help nor did his black jeans that clung to his body.
I blushed lightly as he opened my door and I stepped in. How I didn't notice the gestures before was beyond me. I didn't even notice much about him, I need more experience thats for sure. Yeah I've dated a couple times but they didn't last much. Maybe because the idea of love repulsed me. Stupid Eric.
We were driving silently. He broke the silence as he pulled into CVS. "I'm sorry to do this but I just need to pick something up. It needed to be fresh." I nod and watch as he entered the store. Boredom settled around me in a couple of seconds. I turned in my seat in hopes of finding out what our date will be. Instead, neatly laying in the seat was a painting of a wolf in the forest during a thunderstorm. Doesn't it look familiar? Oh yeah...its my painting.
I turned back around just in time to see Rex come out. He set the bag in the back and we continued our journey. This time he sparked conversation, asking about home and school. I told everything I felt like sharing before I asked about his. He explained to me his pack, family, and the school he use to go to.
His alpha, Zack, allowed him to leave for about three months in order to find me. The time he had here was coming to a close. His high school was normal for the most part if you excluded all the wolves. It was nice hearing him talk. I wondered about the people he told me about and I hoped I could see this new world that I'm discovering.
He pulled into a the familiar dirt road and parked in the small clearing. He grabbed a basket and blanket from the back and led me to a meadow. It was absolutely stunning. He laid the blanket down and I sat on it while he unloaded the baskets good. With delicious deli sandwiches and small desserts it looks perfect.
"You've out done any date I have ever been on. Really this is amazing." He smiled at me. "Glad I could impress you." We ate silently for a few minutes letting the food quench our hunger.
"So tell me more about wolves." Rex seemed shocked at my request. "Well...I don't know what to tell other than the obvious things I've told you…" I nodded slowly.
"I've seen the painting in the back of your truck. Mind telling me what you were doing with it?" His face flushed red at the mention of the painting. Rex opened and closed his mouth like a fish out of water until he closed it for good and really thought about his answer. I smiled at him waiting for the best excuse he could come up with.
"I knew you drew it...I wanted it though real bad and I knew you did too so I placed a high bet on it. Sorry," He gave a sheepish grin, "Its a really good painting. I mean its amazing Amber. I know the wolf is me by the way." Now it was my turn to blush and as I did so I ducked my head down. His laughter filled the area at my shyness about the painting.
He scooted closer, his heat radiating off him in addicting waves. I have no idea why but I see everything about him now. Every movement, every word, every flex of a muscle or every time the breeze ruffles his hair, I feel it all, I see it all. He handed me some dessert before slightly scooting away.
He was giving me space and choices. I loved it. I had my own free will to choose. Rex was kind and understanding. It was a nice change than all the stupid arrogant fools I had gone out with before.
It was silent for a moment as I took in how close we sat together. His hand rested gently on mine and the gesture felt right. Meeting his gaze his head tilted slightly before leaning down. Our lips barely brushed. Without thought I shot out of my seat startling Rex. Breathing heavily I couldn't think of what to do so instead I whispered a sorry before hightailing my butt back home.
I knew I left him hurt. I knew it. I felt it. I saw it. I wasn't use to this deep feeling. It scared me. I was literally trembling when I got home. At first I saw just a friend and then I felt the deep connection. A connection I didn't want. Something I feared. I knew he was a werewolf. He stated I was his mate. We were meant to be.
Something so deep, such a commitment. I was frightened. I was a slow pace girl and with him everything seemed so fast. I've known him a month or so and suddenly he says were meant to be. Honestly I wanted to love someone and be loved back because of who we are not because we were born to be together.
Shaking I fell to the floor. I liked Rex. I really did. But nothing could fix my running away. Nothing would ever be able to. My slow pace mind set just threw everything away. Maybe the real reason I ran was because I wanted it so badly. I wanted to kiss him and have him hold me that it fell out of my standard. That the need and want didn't sound like me. Maybe I was changing. Or maybe I am realizing things with him because I really want this to work unlike all the other ones.
8: Daddy's WordsI let my window open so the cool breeze could cool be down. My stomach turned and twisted at the realization. Not only five minutes ago had a rock been flown into my my open window. Rex was leaving for home and I couldn’t fix anything. Finally I found the strength to move and dashed down the stairs. I stood and watched from the staircase as my dad examined a bottle of unopened scotch. My heart twisted with such an ache.
I was torn. My dad's addiction. A start with someone. With Rex. I blinked away the tears trying hard not to cry. My life was so messed up. Being torn in so many directions. Who should I trust? Which road leads me to my goal? Who knows.
Slowly he opened the bottle and poured the contents down the sink. My dad then rinsed out the bottle and put his hands together as if in prayer. He noticed me standing there once he had finished. Walking towards him I couldn’t help the tears that rolled down my face. We hugged each other tightly.
My heart soared at the thought that he was finally trying. “Dad I have something I need to do. I’ll be back soon.” With a nod of approval I raced to my Jeep and sped back to the dirt road.
I went as fast as I could. I slammed on my brakes almost passing the hidden pathway and made my sharp turn in. I flew into the clearing and parked quickly on the side. My head slightly flung forward from the force but when I looked back up I was disappointed.
His truck was gone. I didn't give up hope however. I jumped fallen logs and avoided low hanging branches. The meadow was clear, it was like nobody had been there. The branched and the grass and the all the flowers just slightly swayed with the wind without care. Breathing heavily my fists unclenched and clenched again. Yelling at the top of my lungs I screamed his name over and over again. The tears blurred my vision and I roughly wiped them away.
Taking a right I made my way to the river. No trace not even a footprint or anything. I made my way back to the dirt road. He had left. Rex had gone home. The lightning cracked overhead and the sky let go a terrible rain fall. For a while I sat there next to my Jeep in the mud. I was soaked to the bone and I shivered from the cold shards of water that hit my skin.
I climbed into the driver’s seat with shaky limbs. Slowly I drove myself home. I entered the front door and saw my dad watching baseball. I closed the door and made my way up stairs. I couldn’t relax under the hot water and laying down on my bed in an attempt to sleep failed as well. I made my way down and sat curled up on the couch.
My dad didn’t say a word he just let his hand rub up and down my arm in a comforting motion. We sat watching baseball as the Yankees began to lose to the Red Sox. It comforted me some to get my mind of him but as far as I’m concern a part of me is missing. A part was always missing but the gap widened. My mother left and now he left.
The game came to a close and my dad switched it to an on going football game. I smiled at how my dad worked. He went from one game to the next not caring who won or who lost until the big win it or lose it games come. “Wanna talk?” I sat up and let his arm swing around my shoulder in a hug.
“I liked him and I ruined it by taking off instead of expressing myself. I just feel like I’m going too fast and already getting in too deep. I saw a friend and then I saw something way more. He left for home. I won’t be able to explain. I liked him and I didn’t want deep and fast and then everything goes nuts and it ends on a heartbreaking note. Too late now.”
He was quiet for a long time watching them pass and tackle each other. My stomach was left unsettled by his silence. Eventually he turned off the tv and held me close to his side. “Amber, if you know where he lives take the chance and explain. Call him and text him. Show him that it really was a misunderstanding. You’re willing to work it out if he is to. Plus I need to beat him for making my daughter cry,” he gave the best grin possible before shooing me up the stairs.
He tucked me into bed and kissed my forehead. “I messed up once with your mother. I realized what I needed to do. I needed to talk. I wasn’t much for public affection but I learned to do just small things. Hold her hand, open doors, and kisses on the cheeks. Those were what made her heart flutter." I smiled widely. Rarely has my dad talked about my mother. It was nice to hear that. I know my dad loves my mom and vice versa. I listened intently as he continued.
"I worked at it because I liked her a lot and then I loved her until her last breath. I refuse to move on because my loyalty is tied to her. Talking with no lies and wearing your heart on your sleeve from time to time never hurts. I believe in you baby girl. Just like you believe I can save myself, I believe you can save yourselves too. Night.” I smiled and nodded.
Very little does my dad express himself, very little is he emotional. Thats what I liked about him. He shared his feelings and thoughts at the right time. He learned how and when to do so. Once I was sure it was snoring I heard I got up.
I sat at my desk and quickly went to Google. I typed in Wolf Charter School. It wasn’t hard to find. I smiled to myself looking at the address. Like he said three states away from my Missouri is his Minnesota. I need to fix this.
I packed my bag. I threw in anything that could keep going for a week. Thats all my dad gave a week. He had convinced me to stay until spring break. It would have been best to stay and finish the quarter off so I reluctantly agreed. I grab my bags and head out to load them in the car.
I was getting in my car ready to head out when my dad knocked on my window. Rolling it down he leaned in and gave me a kiss on the cheek. "Listen here baby girl, I trust you to be responsible and know right from wrong. He doesn't want to fix it, he doesn't want your explanation so be it, its his loss. I swear while your gone I will not drink and I'll go back to AA," I nodded happy at his determination. "See you in a week." With a last wave I headed out and away from Missouri.
It wasn't long until I found myself driving in this small town. It had been raining for the last quarter of my journey which left me freezing in my car. Yeah the heater was going full blast but it didn't help when all I had was a light jacket on.
Slowly I made my way to a hotel and booked a room. Once I settled and got warmed up I received a call from Arica and Sam.
"Hey!" They both greeted quite loudly over the phone. "So did you make it there safe and sound?" I smiled and told them of the weather and my drive over here. Arica said she was sorry while Sam laughed her head off. "I hope you find him. Sam's angry she couldn't go because he wanted to beat him to a pulp. I'll hold her down over here while you do your own business there. Just remember we want to meet him sometime. Probably when Sam is out of town." I laughed as you could hear an angry Sam yell an offended 'hey' in the background.
I wanted to fix it. With them supporting me to express myself and let him know it was no rejection. I didn't want to regret not fixing it. I really just needed closure on if it was or wasn't to work.
I really doubt I could now. With no snacks and the hotel vending machine having nothing good in it I headed to the nearby supermarket to find some munchies. What I hadn't expected was to find him there. I had my hair bundled in a baseball hat to keep it from flying around in my face and shades on to block out the bright sun that decided to show itself.
I was making my way out of the store and back to my car. I had stuffed both the hat and the shades in my purse. I reached my Jeep when I had turned and looked up. Standing a couple of spaces away was Rex. His hands full with grocery bags. I could tell he was shocked. He stared at me for the longest time as if wondering if it was me. I smiled lightly at him and waved.
Rex took a step forward before he was stopped by someone. A dirty blonde shot me a dirty look before dragging Rex off. Rex seemed to protest but did nothing to stop him. I watched disappointed that I had let the chance go.
I shrugged and hopped in, I know I would have more chances. With my things loaded in and i was ready for a nap I headed to the hotel in hopes of telling my dad. On the third ring he picked up. "Hey Amber I'm guessing you made it safely." I sat on the couch and told him of my horrible journey. He laughed at my misfortune. "I found him at the store today. He knows I'm here but I couldn't say anything cause he was busy and was dragged off by a friend but he knows so maybe he'll call or try to find me or something. How was your day?"
"Not a eventful as yours. Listen honey thats wonderful and I'm happy for you but I need to go now for the AA meet." I told him it was fine before hanging up and jumping into bed. My thoughts wandered back to Rex and the man he was with.
Of course he probably told people I had rejected him, maybe that was why that man gave me a dirty look. I stared at the ceiling watching the fan. I turned over and reached for my phone. Maybe it was late and he wouldn't read it or he could just ignore it. I knew I had to text him.
Putting my fingers to the lit up keypad I typed:
Rex, maybe you don't wanna see me again and its totally understandable. I just didn't want to regret sharing my actual feelings. It would be low of me to do it over phone and I rather do this face to face but believe me when you misread my actions. I never meant to make it feel like you were unwanted. I want to give you a chance and I was and I will but I guess it was never you who needed a chance it was me.
-Amber
Pressing send I set my phone on the nightstand and I waited for a reply until finally the fan above lulled me to sleep.
10: KemberlySince the boredom of waiting for a reply became too much I decided to walk about. The rain had cleared and now a cloudless sky hung overhead. The sun beat down proudly as the rest of us scurried around for AC.
Finding a nice little cafe I headed in. I was waiting in line to order when this beautiful woman walked in. She was dropped dead gorgeous no joke. Her her brown boots, ripped jeans, and a New York cut off crop top. Her black hair let her green eyes just pop. If they had girls like that in this town why on Earth would Rex go three states for plain me.
I turned back to the guy but instead he was busy eye raping the woman who just walked in. Clearing my throat loud and rudely his attention snapped back to me. I ordered my coffee and paid. I picked out a window seat and waited for my cup to be ready.
For some odd reason fate decided to be horribly mean to me. I was minding my own business when the model sat down across from me. We stared at each other for the longest time and I finally broke it off to grab my coffee and out of politeness I got hers for her. We sat again in silence and drank our cups.
I looked out the window. I watched people buzz about and for a moment it settled down to just the occasional passing walker. The whole time I felt her pierce into the side of my skull. I glanced at her from time to time. She'd continually peer at me over her coffee. Annoyed, I huffed and turned to fully face her. We stared at each other for the longest time once again. Uncomfortable I looked up towards the clouds.
Politely she cleared her throat preparing to speak. Giving me an apologetic smile she adjusted herself. Knowing not was about to happen I looked down at my cup.
“So...you want to talk to Rex?” I looked at her shocked. “I know you don’t know me but I’m Kemberly. I’m sure you heard of Zach. Well yeah we are um...together. You get what I’m getting at here?” I nodded and let her continue.
“Well Rex came in a total mess and well lets say he got angry one day and threw his phone so I had it on me and you texted and Cody came in cursing you out the other day. I just knew I had to find you. Rex doesn’t know you texted and Cody being the butthead he is is keeping Rex close to him. You see Cody was rejected and now he just wants to take Rex with him.” Kemberly took a big breath and waited for my answer. I knew I shouldn't have but it was an amusing sight to see her talk and then be panting for breath afterward.
“So Cody doesn’t want us to be together and for the record I never rejected him, those words of ‘leave me the hell alone’ never came out. I just freaked out and I don't know but I wanna another shot to express myself. I'm not even that good at this expression, sharing feeling thingy.” Kemberly nodded.
“Listen I can try to talk to Rex alone. I can probably convince Zach to um...I guess help out a little. You know alpha and all.” With both laughed at her suggestion. “By the way I’m not sure if you know but I am not wolf so no need to feel lonely. Not all but some of the mates are usually human.” I smile at the thought to have someone ‘normal’ who could understand.
”Cody’s was human by the way. He met her out of state and then he comes back all heart broken. It killed Zach. Rex and Cody are good fighters and losing their mates is killing them. Usually most don't survive but Cody did, I guess because deep inside he's still fighting for her heart or at least wants too. Possibly he wanted to but just didn't.”
“Hey, maybe this is just from too many romance novels but aren't they like possessive and stuff. I don't know much but before I dive head in first I gotta know.” Kemberly nodded, “Totally possessive. The higher the rank the more possessive. Why? Has Rex been super clingy?”
“Not at all. I mean you think he would be but I even went on a date that ended badly but he didn't flip or anything.” Kemberly gasped and pressured for information. I told her about Eric and that night. She gasped again. “I have no idea why he wasn't trying to murder the guy. Zach would have been all over him.”
I shrugged. “Doesn’t matter. When you meet him trust me I think that even Rex knew there was no competition. We don't have the best attitude-wise guys at our school. Bodies sure but now I’m rethinking that,” we laughed. Before we could continue the door opened and in stepped Cody.
Kemberly quickly turned to face me, whispering, "Think he heard the joke?" He took threatening steps towards us. I nodded quickly. Kemberly was smiling and I only gave her a confused look. She shrugged lightly before winking at me. As soon as he reached us Kemberly's face when completely blank except for the fury hidden deep in her forest eyes.
We both stood up. Kemberly stood with authority, I on the other hand had none. I just stood up so I would feel less threatened. “You should leave,” he hissed directly at me. "You think its fun to mess with hearts huh? Just to break them and then show making jokes about it. You gotta another coming for you-"
“Watch it Cody. She’s staying. Lets not get Zach involved here now.” Cody was shocked at the threat but recomposed himself. Kemberly and Cody were less than a foot apart. Kemberly had to look up at him, losing her authorize edge as she did so. Cody was ready to go toe to toe with her but not while I was present. I stepped in between them and lightly shoved him back. I turned to look at Kemberly.
“It was wonderful to meet you. I should go home anyway. I’m no longer welcomed here,” I sent a glare towards Cody before continuing,” Tell him for me, please. Thank you for talking with me it was wonderful.” Without their replies I walked out of the shop and back to my hotel room.
I had a feeling that if I left I would never get my chance but I also didn’t like the fear of Cody coming after me. Confused and lost I packed my things and hit the road with only the slightest glance back.
I held back tears as I focused on the stretch of road in front of me. It wasn't long until my phone began to ring out its chirpy tone. Without a glance I picked it up. There was silence until I remembered that I had to greet the person. “Hello,” my voice slightly strained as I controlled the car on the highway, which was not easy.
“Amber come back! Cody was rejected and now he wants to take down Rex with him. Most wolves don't survive rejection. Cody did because we all know that he wants to run back to this mysterious mate of his and beg for a chance. I know Rex has mixed feelings but you need to help him sort it out! Please Amber I beg you! I’ll get Zach to hold of Cody for awhile and let you two talk it out!” I heard her heavy pants has she finished her rant.
Looking in the mirror I watched as a car was gaining in me. I grunted as I had to switch lanes with one hand. I settled behind a truck. The silence was tense and I tried to keep by breathing at a regular pace. I adjusted the seat belt as it was suffocating me and the turned the air conditioning off as it was too loud. I took a breath before speaking again.
“I’m sorry but Kemberly I can't do that. If I’m unwelcomed there then I’m unwelcomed. I’ll try again and again but I can't face him there okay? Maybe we could meet each other at a midpoint or something. Listen I’m driving and its not-” I couldn't finish my sentence as the truck spun out in front of me and with no time to dodge I rammed into its side.
I could hear the sound of metal on metal then the metal skidding about on the road. I was dizzy from the impact and the airbags gave me a headache. I heard the sounds of cars skidding to a stop all around the scene. The yelling of people was lost in the ringing that was echoing in my ears like canyon walls. Pain shot through me, the exact source was unknown to me.
Blinking I couldn't rid the haziness in my vision. I gasped for air that couldn't seem to reach my begging lungs. Coughing I was unsure of what I had been spitting out. I was upside down for what seemed like forever. The high pitch of, what I could only hope, was sirens filled my aching ears. Wincing I felt myself being dragged out of the jeep. Strangers lifted me and raced me to somewhere. The white lights blinded me and before I could adjust the blackness that surrounded my vision closed in on me and I was lost in a sea of dark.
--Rex POV--
I sat wallowing in sorrow. I hadn't left the house or really my spot on the couch since I returned. Alpha had dropped by constantly with his mate to check up on me. Cody sat beside me telling me how some girl came into town. She was a player. She was my mate.
"I'm telling you came struting in like she owned the place, that-" before I stand to defend her Kemberly struted in. One look told me she was pissed. She stood right in front of Cody. Tears glistened in her eyes. Just passed her shaking form was Zach.
"You little butthole!! How could you! She came to apologize!! Rex," her voice calmer as her glassy gaze landed on me, "you missed understood. She came to sort it until," her voice rose again as she locked eyes with Cody," you barged in and rudely told her off!"
"She was using him! Playing with his head and tearing his heart!" Cody stood threateningly as he towered over her. With this Zach was quick to enter the arguement and with one look Cody sat down with his head bowed.
"Rex hear me out when I say she freaked. Its never been serious with her before and she got scared." Kemberly begged with her eyes. I know she couldn't tell but my heart soared at such a confession. That was until the guilt finally spread across her face.
"K? Whats wrong?" Zach's voice was low and soft. Kemberly's tears struck a cord within me. She was such a strong person like an older sister. To see her cry hurt but I had a feeling the guilt and tears were connected to Amber. Her glassy gaze that at one point held rage in them let the tears flow out. Her quick breathes alerted me.
"Amber's in the hospital." The words left an icy chill in the air. Kemberly's knees wobbled and Zach caught her. Her words were bubbly and mixed but I caught on that Kemberly must have been on the phone when it happened. She blamed herself as the reason it happened.
My thoughts turned bitter. I had been right.
The darkness was tugging and pulling at my mind. I felt like I was going to go insane. I was numb. Horribly terrifyingly numb. From time to time a searing pain cut through the darkness taking my breath away. Throbbing was all I could feel and I whimpered in hurt and fear. In each small episode it felt as something had touched my hand and shocks of pleasant surprise coursed through me.
It was the small light in this dark world. Each touch made me feel alive. Each tingle that filled me brought me closer and closer to my senses. It wasn't long until I could hear slurred words. The touch of my unseen world came next. In fact it was uncomfortable and the sheets were making my skin itchy. The smell that soon reached me made me gag. That had caused a fuss about me. The muffled words mixed together making me wince at such a high pitched sound.
Even if I didn't want it to the bile rose in my throat and spilled about me. I felt a smooth cool cloth pat my face before it settled on my forehead. I welcomed the coolness. I then felt a rough hand grasp mine in what felt like pure desperation. It wasn't the hand that had led me from the dark but there was a familiarity about it. Cool liquid hit my burning skin and the muffled of what I can only assume be a sob filled the air. Everything quieted down soon after and I drifted off into my own world.
Soreness was what greeted me along with annoying beebs and a horrible smell. I was too afraid to open my eyes so I called out an inaudible hello. There was no response. I shifted on the mattress. With more effort a small whispered hello fell from my lips. The action caused my throat to burn.
I whimpered slightly fearing no one could hear me. A hand touched my own. "Amber, baby, come on. Please make a noise or move again something." I squeezed his hand and internally winced at how stiff my muscles were. "Let me get a nurse and we can get you some water alright?" My breathe became quick at the fact of being alone again, probably suffocating his hand I held it tightly. I heard him sigh and then settle in his seat.
"Open your eyes. Try to. Let me see you, Amber. Open those eyes." I peeked through my eyelids before I closed them. "Alright give me two seconds I'll be back I swear." Before I could stop him his hand slipped from mine and he was out the door. A few moments later he returned with a nurse. She dimmed the lights and checked on the machinery before leaving us alone.
I peeked again and the light wasn't blinding as before. I blinked before I focused on the man next to me. "Rex," I barely croaked out the word. He smiled and held my hand.
"Amber I know now. Kemberly told me everything. Maybe I was moving too fast for you and should have given you time to think about all that info. I'm sorry that I just up and left. I never meant to put you through that. You can't believe how happy I was that you hadn't rejected me and it was just a misunderstanding. Then I heard you were in the hospital and I just couldn't-" he held back tears.
"You were out for two days and I met your dad. He said, 'so you're the man my daughter risked everything for. She was always out and I couldn't seem to figure out why she was so happy.' You have no idea how I cried. It was my fault that you're here and I just-" I squeezed his hand and offered a small smile.
My hand left his and reached up to his cheek. He sighed in relief. Kissing my palm he got up and poured me a glass of water. Rex held my head in one hand while the other held the cup. The water was good and eased the burn and dryness that had settled in my throat. After that Rex left and my dad came in. I smiled brightly at him. "My baby girl," he bended down and placed a kiss on my forehead.
"I'm so happy for you. I've never seen a man cry so much in front of me. When I introduced myself he broke down. Kept apologizing and sobbing, I had to hold him. He's a good kid. Hasn't left your side since the day he got here. Amber I'm proud of you, proud that you found a man not afraid to show tears when its absolutely acceptable. Even if it put you here I'm assuming you think its worth it huh?"
My smile turned into a grin at how well my daddy knew me. We stayed in comfortable silence for a while. His hand cautiously stroked my hair and he kissed my cheek from time to time. Eventually Rex came back in. My father stood then and waved him in.
"Alrighty son since my little girl is awake I got say this. You hurt her or keep her out past midnight I'll take my shotgun to ya. You hear me?" I covered my laugh and my dad slightly smiled. Rex nodded and they shook hands.
"Never have I meant to hurt her, sir. If I do keep her out past midnight we all she's the one at fault." I frowned as they both laughed. I glared at the two before my dad left to call some buddies at home who hoped I would get well. Rex sat with me while Zach and Kemberly came to visit. I shook hands with Zach.
"Glad you two made up couldn't lose one of the best fighters in my pack now could we?" I smiled and nodded. Kemberly shoved him out of the way. "My baby Amber, oh my gosh I am so sorry! If I hadn't been distracting you you would have never crashed." Zach held her back from crushing me in a hug. When she calmed down he let her sit on my other side.
"Now listen here, you hurt her and I catch wind of it and believe me I will, I will suck Zach on you!" I laughed at her threat. "Amber stop laughing this is the point where you threaten Zach."
I looked at her before hoarsely responding,"I don't believe there is much for me to threaten him with other than my daddy's shotgun so you're out of luck." Zach laughed as Kemberly pouted. They said there 'get wells' and 'goodbyes' before heading off for home.
"So you accept me?" I looked into his eyes getting lost in his amber-like colored eyes. "You know I love the way your eyes are like gold/amber color," my hand reached up to stroke his black hair, "you know your hair is a sleek jet black not rough like it looks," he let me talk without interruption, slightly smiling at my compliments.
"You know when you left I had run out to that little trail and had gone searching for you," he stiffened at my words, "I don't think I have ever felt so numb." His hand covered my own which lay on his cheek. "I felt so guilty that I just took off. I never felt serious like this about someone and I guess-" It was the most rudest yet awesomest way to interrupt me.
Sparks flew as I closed my eyes and just let Rex kiss me. It was nice to feel his lips on mine again. He was bent over me as I relaxed in the pillows. He hovered over me once he pulled back. Slowly Rex pecked me again before settling in his seat. My eyes watched him carefully and subconsciously I licked my lips.
His intense gaze left me nervous so I began biting my lip which seemed to make everything worse. Slowly he came back to my face. "Thats torturous you know." Just to tease him I licked them again and thats all it took.
Somehow I had made a promise to meet the pack before heading home. I don't remember it and from NCIS theres a rule about if you think you're being played you probably are. I don't think I know was being played or more like tricked. Zach stayed out of it no much how I pleaded for help. Kemberly and Rex dragged me out and to their huge pack house.
It was like mansion mixed with a cabin. It was absolutely breath taking. The house was located in the privacy and protection of the forest which allowed them to be running around in wolf form. Rex was excited to show me around. The place was absolutely beautiful inside as it was out.
Chandeliers hung from the ceiling and the wood structure was neatly designed with straight edges and just the slight simple curve here and there. Rex held my hand as we greeted people throughout the tour that Kemberly wonderfully provided.
"Ah Rex! This must be the lucky gal!!" A man slightly taller than Rex but shorter than Zach approached us with a fuming girl tailing behind him. The man put his arm around Rex and whispered something in his ear. I was roughly pulled from Rex by the girl and Kemberly flanked us.
"What happened, Sue?!" Kemberly hung on her other side. Ignoring her she turned to me. "You are Rex's mate? Its nice to meet you. I'm sadly mated to the Beta, Josh. He's so frustrating sometimes. Be lucky Rex isn't overly possessive since he's like the third best fighter which makes him in a third command position I guess. Anyways we'll finish this tour together and complain about boys."
I laughed and nodded. Sue pouted slightly, "Josh says I can't leave without a bodyguard! Not even out into the lawn." I blinked and looked over to the beta hoping he was joking but his face was serious.
"Sue this is important. I don't want you hurt, these people are dangerous." Kemberly moved me back as Sue was heaving with anger. Zach and Rex were next to us as we gave them space to work it out. "Important?! Who is so importantly dangerous that I have to have a bodyguard?!" Sue was beyond angry now she was absolutely livid.
"Calm down baby. Come on now don't be difficult and just help Kemberly show Amber around." Josh took a step forward but immediately took two back at the growl from Sue. I could easily tell that he was trying to be polite in front of me. The fury in his eyes was noticeable even to where I was standing. Josh was easily getting frustrated and I didn't want a fight to occur, I could feel Kemberly's wheels in that pretty head of her so turning. Looking at each other we nodded, Kemberly and I flanked Sue and gently dragged her off to the back yard.
Once we were outside we sat down by the edge of the woods and waited for her to calm down. "Want to explain cause I'm new and I need information for clear diagnosis." Kemberly laughed before explaining that a pack of hunters have entered the territory and they are most likely looking to capture or kill some of the pack.
"Sue it's alright he doesn't want to lose you and I think that's sweet. Is Zach doing that to you Kemberly? I mean if Josh is doing it then Zach should be too." The look that passed between the two left me uneasy and nervous. "Oh Amber Zach and Josh aren't the only ones. Rex is figuring out how to protect you. You might have a new stalker friend soon."
I paled. "That's not happening. Number one, that poor guy would be shot the minute my dad found out then Rex would be next and I'd be grounded for 'protection'. Really it's not a win win situation." I nodded at my logic and the others giggled.
"I think I can take a bullet, Amber. Don't worry." Rex pulled me to him and gestured back at the house. I was dragged away and barely managed to wave goodbye at the laughing girls. I was glued to his side as we continued upward until we reached the fourth floor and was brought into a room.
"I'm sure Kemberly told you but the fourth floor is reserved for the top fighters and beta while the fifth is just for the alpha. Here is my room." For a guy's room it was neat. The creme and brown theme just fitted with him. It was nice and casual plus his room was actually picked up and the bed made. For him being a guy I was impressed.
His arms circled me and we stood there in silence as he held me. It felt surreal. Him, the house, all the people I have met. Everything was so normal yet not all at the same time.
"Hey Rex?" He hummed as he moved us more into his room. With his foot he kicked the door closed. I stood silent for a moment. "It's weird. You're not overly possessive. Why? Are you just weird or overly nice?"
Rex laughed. His deep voice echoed off the walls. "Oh Kemberly. I can be quite possessive," proving his point his arms tightened around me. His nose buried itself deep in my hair. "I don't want to scare you off though. Unlike the Alpha and Beta I don't particularly go crazy. I mean sure at first I did but I realized there was no reason. Eric didn't seem like much of a threat but I will break him next he comes near you."
I smiled lightly at his last comment. I was ready to speak until I realized he wasn't done. "Amber, I trust you. I know you're strong. I get all of that but I still will protect you. I'll ask you to sit back and let me handle whatever is to come. You're my mate. I won't let someone just walk all over you. Not while I'm still breathing."
Sighing I moved away from him and laid down on his bed. He followed after me and just held me. Not sure when this had happened but I drifted off to sleep only to be awakened a couple hours later by Rex’s and another voice outside the door. Getting up was difficult. I was still sore all over and when I stopped moving it was hard to get back into motion. The doctor said that I needed to move around but not overdue it then again I can’t become a total couch potato.
I ran a hand through my hair as I attempted to make out what they were saying but sadly couldn’t. I walked cautiously to the door and opened it gently. The voices ceased and I was met with a concerned Rex.
“Amber, baby, sorry Zach needed to talk with me. What do you need?” I smiled gently. I knew it was time. “I gotta go actually. My dads waiting and I can’t keep him he has work and stuff.” Rex stood stock still for a moment. He nodded and gave me a kiss on the forehead before escorting me back to the hotel.
“Amber, you know how to use that shot gun right?” I nodded and waited for him to elaborate on his question but when he didn't I let it be. I knew he wanted to protect me with every fiber in his being. It wasn't to prove to me or anyone else he was strong but to himself. He wanted to prove to him, that he could protect me, that he was strong enough, worthy enough to be with me.
Yet, he was letting me protect myself from whatever was coming. He trusted me to be strong. We were a team now. That's what you are in a relationship. Whether its ours or just a random couple on the street, the relationship works when the two act as a team. With one last hug we parted. With promises of returning I left for home with my dad. I knew that no matter what, I had left my heart behind in hopes of Rex being trustworthy enough to protect it dearly.
