I had to get out of the room. More and more people were coming in, cramping me, pushing and shoving. I was becoming even more and more claustrophobic as the people around me pressed in. Everyone was coming into the room, yelling and screaming, as I took a deep breath and tried push through the crowd. I was knocked back, again and again, trying to reach the other door, knowing the first door was clogged with more people attempting to come in.
I knew that it would be crowded, a room where the President himself was going to give a speech, but not this crowded. His speech was supposed to have a solution to the worldwide economic problems that had been sprouting up and my mom had wanted to to see it. We were at Virginia's Executive Mansion and Mom was hopeful that this could be our salvation and didn't want to miss it. I didn't really care, it wasn't like it was that important, right?
The building was huge though, very complex and confusing.
I called over to my mom, "I'll be over there!" I pointed at the place that has the least amount of people. She nods, and I ran over there, trying to get out of the crowd. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw a flash of iridescent light. Turning to look, I saw nothing there.
Shrugging it off, I leaned on the edge of the small fountain that I had found. Seeing a door nearby, and my mother distracted, I walked outside. It was night time, so it was dark and cold. Pulling my coat tighter around me, I exhaled a frosty breath. Another light flashed quickly behind me, this time gold, and I whirled around.
Nothing was there.
The empty grounds just stretched on, and I was still alone - wait! On the farthest hill from where I was standing I saw a silhouette. I squinted, trying to get a better look, and then blinked.
No one was there.
It was just my imagination, I told myself, Mystery figures at night? Oh please, I convinced myself, that's so you, Fayth. I turned around and went back inside. Leaning on the fountain again, Mom looked over and caught my eye from the middle of the room, a couple yards away from me. She had not noticed that I had gone outside, so she mouthed at me 'Have you seen An?', it was too loud to talk. 'No' I mouthed back at her and started looking all around the room for her. An is Antonia, my twin sister, and my closest friend. Ever since we were little, we had been there for each other, and it had stuck. Now we were 16, and we were still there for each other.
Someone tapped me on the back and I turned around to see An. An has brown curly hair, that fades to curly blonde hair, just like mine. She also has greenish-gray eyes, and I have eyes very similar, but more green. We were both wearing sweatshirts and some jeans, but she wore a long-sleeves shirt, and I wore a t-shirt. She covered my mouth before I could let Mom know and she had tear marks around her eyes. I pulled her hand off of my mouth and whispered to her, pointing at the same door that I had gone out of earlier. "Go. I'll be there in a few." An ran outside and I pretended to look for her for another minute before joining her outside.
"Hey, An," I spoke to her, "What did she do this time?"
"Mom went crazy on me, Fay, like she always does, for no reason." She cries and I hold her. I always hold her. On top of the building, I see a flash of silver. I look up. "An, did you see that?"
"See what?" She asks me, confused.
"That light!"
"Fayth, there was no light." She tells me, starting to calm down.
"Okay," I lied, "there was probably no light. It was just my imagination."
We sit there, her leaning on me and my arms wrapped around her for a few moments more, before An gets up. "I'll go back in," An tells me. "I'll apologize to Mom for running off, and everything."
"Yeah," I replied, not really focusing on her, "sure." I was still watching where I had seen the silver light. "Go in, have fun." An walked back inside, but I sat there for a few extra moments.
An popped her head back out. "Get in here, Fay! They turned music and cleared a dance area for us teenagers!"
I smiled. "Coming!" I called back to An. She knew that I loved dancing, and got me to dance whenever possible.
I ran back inside and joined An on the dance floor. I saw the iridescent light from earlier fly across the ceiling, followed by the the silver and gold lights. They flew through the air above us, and I continued to dance, assuming that they were special effects.
Then, lights that were colored with all colors imaginable joined the three original ones.
Vibrant, vivid reds, flowed through dull, dark blues, while bright, beautiful yellows soared above them. Fayth continued to dance, but was amazed by the show above her.
"Having fun, Fay?" An asked me, shouting to be heard over the volume of the music, coming back from apologizing to Mom. I could see Mom in the background, watching the two of us.
"Yeah! These special effects are amazing!" I yelled back at her, pointing at the ceiling.
"What special effects?" An asked me.
"All those lights," I pointed at them again, "up there."
"What lights?!" An was starting to get exasperated with me. "Fay, there's NO lights up there."
I looked up and saw the bright colors still swirling above me and lied. "Gotcha!" I cried, acting like I had been kidding with her.
We kept dancing until a guy, probably about our age, ran through the crowd, stumbling. He ran right in between us. He glanced backwards, a look of horror on his face, before her scrambled to his feet and began to run off.
An ignored the poor guy, probably just being crazy, but then one the lights, which was a rich purple, flew through the crowd. It seemed to almost be following the guy who had run through. I remembered, the lights "aren't" actually there. Make no comments about them, don't look at them.
The lights seemed to descending on the crowd of people, and one of the boys near us dancing seemed to collapse. I looked over, seeing the girl that they had been dancing with freaking out. "He's dead!" The girl started shrieking, and I noticed that the guy was covered with a vibrant green light.
A couple of people near An and I started to be covered with all sorts of different colored lights. The lights started to become brighter and brighter, so I grabbed An's hand and pulled her away from the lights.
We ran and I pulled An along, making sure that she didn't run into any of the lights. Glancing behind us again, I saw the gold light start to chase us. "Fay, Fay! Where are we running?!" I heard An shout to me, but it felt like she was yelling at me from above water, while I was under.
"Just hurry!" I told her. An had known me for years, she could hear the urgency in my voice. We started running faster, and the gold light started to catch up with us. It reached us and - I skidded to a halt.
An was enveloped by the golden light, she fell to the floor and was lifeless. I saw her there, but I was helpless. I stood there and I tried to comfort her, if I still could, not sure whether she was dead yet or not, I hugged her. The light around her started to squirm as I hugged her, as if repelled by me. The golden light released An and flew away, but I stayed there hugging her body. I hoped, I hoped with all of my heart heart that she wouldn't be dead.
The lights ignored us, attacking everyone around us. "Antonia Coletti," I whispered to her, a tear falling down my face and splashing down onto her body. "Don't you dare be dead." I cried, as I held her. "Don't you da - AHHH!" I screamed, something started tugging me, away from An. I turned around to see the iridescent light once more.
"You're real." I murmured to it. "You've always been real." It continued to tug and pull me. "I see you!" It tried to scoop me up. "I could always see you!" This time, the iridescent light did scoop me up. It took me off, leaving An's body behind. "No!" I screamed. "AN!" In the seconds before I was carried out of eyesight, it was like my sight had focused. I zoomed in on An. "An . . ." I whispered, and her eyes, blinked, and she was out of eyesight.
