I stood at the school gate as they got ready to close the gates. I looked around for Brooke, when i finally saw her turn the corner. she was late again. when she ran past me, i ran with her. the late bell rang, and i groaned.

 

Detention again. and another joyful lecture from Mr. Thompson.

 

I thought as we ran. we barged in the classroom breathing heavily and Mr.T just sighed, facing the board. he was used to us being late, and for all i knew this was just another normal day. "Take your seat, Ladies." he said and continued writing on the board with his squeaky marker. i stood there, confused. apparently Brooke was equally confused, because she didn't move either. we both looked at each other and i shrugged. maybe we were starting fresh with a new semester, maybe?

 

No, that can't be right. the new semester stared last week.

 

"Ladies. Now." he said and we walked over to our desks in the back corner. as we were walking, i walked past three new kids. when we sat down, Mr.T turned around and stared down the class with his 'Speak and you get an hour of detention.' look.

 

"Class, if you haven't already noticed, we have three students with us today. show them your highest courtesy." he said and wave them up. they all stood up and walked to the front of the class and stood there, as if they haven't done this before.

 

I looked at the three new students. there was a girl and two boys. the girl- she was amazingly beautiful. she had a long neck, high cheekbones, and amazing eyes. but she had bright pink eyes, that were almost luminescent. she had long, curly hair that went to the arch of her back. it was hot pink at the roots, and faded to pastel pink by the time it got to the tips. she was tall and skinny, and she looked beautiful even compared to a model. i looked over to one of the guys. he had pitch black hair, and bright white streaks scattered throughout his hair. it went to his shoulders and covered part of his forehead. his expression was cold and emotionless. then i saw his eyes. they were a bright red, that were almost glowing like the girl's eyes. He was tall and well-built. he was wearing faded blue jeans and a leather jacket over what looked like a black band tee. he glared at any of the guys that were gawking at the girl protectively.

 

Are they related? or is she his girlfriend or something?

 

I looked over at the last guy. he was insanely hot. He was tall and well built like the other guy, but something was different about him. I felt drawn to him, like a magnet. the left half of his hair was neon purple, and the right half was royal blue. but his eyes flipped those colors. his right eye was the same royal blue as his hair, and his left eye was the same neon purple, as well. his eyes seemed to glow, as well. he was wearing a pair of dark blue jeans that faded in some spots, and a gray tee shirt. i didn't realize i was staring at him until i made eye contact with him. i blushed and looked down at my desk. from the corner of my eye, I thought I saw him smile.

 

Brooke seemed to be enjoying this, because she looked over at me and smirked. "someone's got a crush~" she chimed. i glared at her. "shut up..." i mumbled.

 

after a long silence, Mr.T cleared his throat. "go ahead and introduce yourselves." he whispered.

 

The girl seemed to jump in to the chance. "I'm Sarah~" she said and winked.

 

The guy with black hair rolled his eyes at her and just looked up. "I'm Nico." he said uninterested in the whole thing.

 

then the last guy introduced himself. "I'm Kellen" he said and smiled kindly. I swore he was looking at me while he introduced himself, but then i looked at who was sitting in front of me. Isabelle. Of course e was looking at her, she was the prettiest girl in the school... well, second, now.

 

"What's with your hair?" Brooke said boldly. i looked over at her surprised and Mr.T got mad.

 

"Miss Clark! Their hair is fine, and I expect you to show some respect!" he said glaring at her.

 

She has a point... i thought colored hair wasn't allowed at this school.

 

I sighed and looked down at my desk and doodled on the desk with my pencil and zoned out the rest of class.

 

In second period, i had p.e. with Brooke and Sarah. in the boys' gym on the other side of the gym, i saw Kellen and Nico. when we were getting changed, there was a fight in the boys' locker room. nobody was there to see what happened, but the fire alarm went off and the sprinklers came on. the girls screamed and we all rushed out to the field. when we were at the field, Isabelle made her way to Kellen and i rolled my eyes. Brooke and i leaned against the walls of the school, drenched.

 

"so do you wanna come over to my house after school and you can stay at my place for the weekend?" Brooke asked and i shook my head.

 

"I can't, I'm supposed to hang out with Leo. Do you wanna come with? You've seen how awkward it gets between us." i said and she smiled.

 

"Sure." she said and then elbowed me in the ribs.

 

"Ow!" i hissed.

 

"Shut up and act cool. Look who's coming over here." she said i looked up to see Kellen walking towards us.

 

"Psh... why should i care?" I mumbled. she shot me a look. she knew i cared. I looked around to see if he was actually walking towards us, then i saw Sarah standing not that far from us. "Wrong. Look who's over there." i said gesturing over to her.

 

Brooke shrugged. "Oh, well. It's not like he would be able to get a piece ofThis." She joked and we both laughed.

 

We walked over around the corner so we could sit down without being yelled at,and nobody could see us. then i heard the voices of some familiar people.

 

"Nico! Why did you have to go and start a fire, on the first day! We got banished for a reason, and you're only going to keep us here even longer!" I recognized Kellen's voice.

 

I looked over at Brooke and pressed a finger to my lips. I knew it was bad to eavesdrop, but this seemed interesting. She seemed equally as interested, so we both kept our mouths shut as we listened.

 

"What were you thinking, Nico?!" Sarah hissed.

 

"The guy insulted me. he had it coming." Nico said as if it was nothing.

 

"Then you should've beat him up like any other human would've! We're supposed to be humans for 6 months before we can go back home, remember, Nico?" Kellen sighed. "God... How are we supposed to explain this? 'Sorry, the guy insulted me so i used my demon powers and Burned his hair off.'?" Kellen said annoyed.

 

My eyes widened. D-Demons...?! I looked back at Brooke who seemed just as surprised. there was nothing but silence and the background noise of all the other students talking on the football field.

 

"It's rude to eavesdrop, you know." a voice from behind us said.

2: Demons

I jumped and turned around to see Kellen, Sarah, and Nico were all standing there observing us.

 

"How much did you hear?" Sarah hissed and i glanced at Brooke.

 

"We didn't hear anything. how much of our conversation did you hear?" Brooke said emotionless. even i could barely tell she was lying. apparently they could tell, though. At least Kellen did.

 

"Get up. we need to have a talk." Kellen said.

 

I hesitated, but something inside me felt like i had to get up. i slowly stood up, and Brooke did as well. She looked at me as if I were insane, and i was starting to think i was, too. Kellen turned around and walked away, and i expected we were supposed to follow. I looked at Brooke and she shrugged. i sighed and mentally prepared myself. We all walked away and they walked us out of the school. Before we knew it, we were at their apartment.

 

"Whoa, whoa, whoa. Who ever said we would go to your apartment?" I said stopping and crossing my arms.

 

"Just go." Nico said coldly. He appeared behind me and i stiffened. i looked behind me into his luminescent red eyes and a chill rolled down my spine. I submitted and walked inside. Kellen gestured for Brooke and i to sit down on the smaller couch while they sat across from us.

 

"Now, how much did you hear?" Kellen asked again. "And I'll know if you lie." he added.

 

I stared down at my lap, then got an idea. "I'll only answer that question if you answer mine," I looked up at them and he sighed.

 

"...Deal." He said almost hesitantly.

 

I nodded. "I heard everything. all of it." i said and leaned forward. "now for my question... Are you guys demons or something?" I asked, recalling how he said that Nico used his 'demon powers'.

 

None of them spoke. They all looked at each other as if they were having an entire telepathic conversation. then Kellen sighed. "Once we tell you, we'll have to be keeping a close eye on you; are you positive you want to know?" He asked, as if trying to discourage me. I nodded and he just stared at me as if looking for any sign of weakness. i stayed strong, and he finally gave up. "Fine. Yes, we are demons." He said half-heartedly.

 

Brooke got a gleam in her eye and jumped on the chance to ask them some questions. "What kind of demons? like, the kind that drink blood and eat humans? what kind of powers do you guys have? do you-"

 

"Shut up." Nico interrupted, but despite his annoyance, he decided to answer her questions. "The kind of demons that lived in the demon realm, but got banished for 6 months..." he said and walked around the couch. "and we don't eat humans or drink their blood..." he was standing behind Brooke and leaned in so his lips brushed her ear. "...But i would be happy to do that for you." He said flirtatiously.

 

Brooke shot up and turned around to see Nico smirking from ear-to-ear, obviously finding it amusing to tease her. "D-don't do that!" She snapped with a red face.

 

Nico continued and Brooke sat back down when he was far enough away from the couch. "And we all have different powers; like my powers are fire and shadows. Kellen's is strength and anything involving the mind. Sarah can heal and turn into a cat of any size or type, too. and no two demons ever have the same powers. maybe they can have a twisted version of their parents'; but that's about it." He said.

 

I just sat there silently, trying to process the fact that they were all demons. i was relieved to find that they didn't eat humans or anything, but Nico wasn't all that convincing. then, my phone rang loudly enough to make me jump. i pulled out my phone and looked at the caller I.D. It was Leo.

 

crap.

 

I grabbed Brooke's arm and rushed out of the house. when we were out, i began to run to my house.

 

~Kellen's P.O.V~

 

Nico was about to go after the girls as they ran off, but i stopped him. "Sarah, did you get their scent?" she nodded then scoffed. "Yeah, but don't act like you can boss me around. got it?" she hissed and i rolled my eyes. we all stood up and Sarah led us the way to where they went.

 

~Maddy's P.O.V.~

3: The Contract

I stopped in front of the large building and breathed heavily. if it weren't for Leo calling me, i would've completely forgotten and been stuck in there. I caught my breath and looked at Brooke, who didn't even seem winded. We went to the front door and i stuck my house key in the keyhole and opened the door. When we walked inside, My dad and Leo were there waiting for us. and... so were Sara h, Nico and Kellen.

 

"W-What's going on?" I asked, unable to move.

 

"Maddy! You never told me you had a boyfriend!" Kim- my dad's girlfriend- exclaimed. my dad, on the other hand, didn't seem so happy. i wasn't either.

 

"Um.. I-" I paused to think about what i was going to say, then Kellen came beside me and wrapped his arm around my shoulders.

 

"We were keeping it a secret for a little bit. sorry." He said and smiled sheepishly.

 

Boyfriend? That's what he came up with?

 

Kellen looked down at me, and I just then realized how much taller than me he was. I pushed away that fact, then i heard a voice in my head;

 

Keep your mouth shut.

 

I was beginning to think i was going insane, then i remembered Nico's words,"Kellen's power is strength and anything involving the mind". Great. I had a demon getting into my head.

 

"Sorry you had to come all the way here for nothing, but I was going to go out with Brooke and Leo." i said trying to sound sympathetic, but i think i just sounded like a brat.

 

"You can go out, Mad. I'll be here for 2 weeks this time, so there's plenty of time for us to spend together." Leo said and smiled. i stifled a smile, and nodded.

 

I pulled Kellen out of the house harshly. "What the hell! Boyfriend? They actually believed that?! and why didn't they ask you guys about your hair!" I hissed, and he blinked a few times before answering. Brooke walked out with Nico and Sarah.

 

"What about my... You can see my hair color?" He said surprised.

 

"Duh! And Nico's and Sarah's. Why wouldn't I be able to?" I asked annoyed he changed the subject from the boyfriend thing.

 

"Hm... Because in the human world, we look like normal people to humans.. why are you different?" he said walking closer to me. he grabbed my chin and looked into my eyes.

 

I shoved him away from me . "Tch... Since I'm your 'girlfriend', how about you explain more to me?" I asked, grabbing his arm and dragging him to the old park. I looked back at the other three to follow.

 

once we got to the park, I looked at him and sat down at one of the benches. "So-" His phone began to ring and he reluctantly answered it. There was a loud sound coming from the phone and he dropped it. I stood up and began to walk over to him, then there was a loud screeching sound coming from the phone. Everyone covered their ears, and I started to get dizzy. I fell forward and i felt myself get caught. When everything felt normal again, i opened my eyes. we weren't at the park.

 

"You okay?" Kellen asked. I saw that he was the one that caught me. I nodded and stood up and he unhooked his arm from my waist.

 

"Where are we?" Brooke asked.

 

"The demon realm... and in the council building." Nico said and I could see all of them looked scared, as if something bad was going to happen. An old man appeared in front of us, and he told us to follow him. He didn't look very old, but the grey in his hair gave it away. He was wearing a black robe and when we appeared in front of two large black doors, he pulled the hood of his robe over his head. he opened the large doors and there was a crowd of people that looked identical to him in the robes. there was a couple hundred of them, and then there were 5 people on a small table in red robes. the old man led us to 5 chairs directly in front of the people in the red robes. we all sat down, Brooke and i were on the last 2 chairs.

 

"Kellen, Sarah, Nico. You have revealed yourselves to two... Humans" a woman's voice said, and the way the word rolled off her tongue it sounded like a disease.

 

"Before we kill them... might we know why you would let these two know?" A deep male voice asked.

 

there was a silence.

 

"...Because they can see our natural form." Kellen said and his voice echoed through the room.

 

The room was silent, then the room filled with murmurs of the council members. the man in the middle of the 5 council leaders stood up and everyone went silent. I stared ath him. The man smirked. He looked up and his yellow eyes shone brightly until i felt a burning sensation on my left arm. I clutched my shoulder and that seemed to dull the pain.

 

"I'll let these two live, but here's the condition. All of you have a mark, and i have bound you all by contract to one person of the opposite gender..." He said.

 

All of us looked at Sarah. Who was she bound to?

 

"You may go." The large man said waving a hand like he was swatting at a fly. Then, we were at the park again. I ws sitting on the ground, and before my vision focused, I pulled down the sleeve of my shirt and saw a large tattoo on my shoulder. it was black and had some markings on them i didn't understand. I saw Kellen staring at the mark on my shoulder. I groaned and got up.

 

"Whatever. I'm going home. I'll deal with this tomorrow." I murmured and walked away.

 

When I got home, I went straight to my room and took a bath, then went to bed. I laid in my bed for a while thinking about everything that went on today, and I clutched my shoulder which still burned. I plugged my headphones into my phone and listened to music until i drifted off into sleep.

 

 

 

4: Dreams

I opened my eyes and i was in the same meadows as i was always in with my dreams. I closed my eyes again and inhaled deeply through my nose and smelled all the flowers around me. i could smell lilacs, roses, lilies, and every flower that could be named. I opened my eyes and stood up. i looked around and saw a large array of colors. I saw a small brown cottage a few feet ahead, and began to walk towards it. I fell in some sort of hole. I landed face down and I winced. I looked around and I instantly knew where i was. I was in the demon realm. Nobody was there, and when Istood up and looked around, there was one person. I hid behind a large column, and stared at him. His eyes were closed, and he tilted his head back with his hands and pockets. he was facing the sun, and it was like the sun only shone for him. I stepped forward to get a better view, and then I stepped on a twig. There was a loud, echoing crack and i jumped back in hopes he didn't see me. After a moment of silence, I looked over again. When I saw no one, I was tugged back by a strong grip. I squinted my eyes shut. "It's okay." a voice said. i began to open my eyes slowly, and then-

 

*Beep Beep Beep*

 

The loud obnoxious beeping of my alarm woke me up before i got to see who the guy was. I sighed and when i turned around to press the snooze button on my alarm, there was another body blocking my way. I looked up at who's face it was and saw Kellen. I screamed and scooted back as far as i could and i ended up falling off the bed.

 

"What is it?!" I heard Leo yell and I heard my door open. There was a long awkward silence, and Leo just had to make it worse. "...Did you at least use a condom?" He asked.

 

I shot up and my face was cherry red. "Leo!" I yelled, flustered.

 

Kellen just looked over at me and smirked. He was enjoying this. "No need to worry." He said and propped himself up with his elbow.

 

"Okay, good..." Leo said and walked out.

 

I watched the door close behind him and when i was sure he wasn't in hearing range, I glared at Kellen. "What was that all about?! Why did you... What are you even doing here?!" I yelled in a hushed tone.

 

"You haven't realized yet?" He paused as if waiting for a light bulb to go off in my head. He sighed after a moment. "When we're apart, the marks of our contract begin to burn. the longer we're away from each other, the more the marks burn." He said as if it was obvious.

 

"you still didn't answer my question... what are you doing sleeping in my bed?!" I snapped.

 

"You aren't the brightest in your class, are you?" he said annoyed. "I was doing some research on contracts and by 3 in the morning i was in agonizing pain. So i came over here."

 

I sighed. "Fine." I walked towards my closet and found some clothes to wear for today.

 

"By the way... What was in the cottage?"

 

"...What cottage?"

 

"The one in the meadow."

 

 

5: Feelings

"By the way... what was in the cottage?"

I stood there, my back facing him. i tried to comprehend the thought that he was there in my dream, too.

 

"...My mom." I whispered. i wasn't even sure if he could hear me.

 

"Oh." He paused and I heard him shift under the covers of the bed. "You look just like her." He said and I snapped my head over to see him. I saw him holding a picture of mom and I.

 

"Don't touch that" I hissed, sounding harsher than I'd meant it to be.

 

He set the frame back on the nightstand next to my alarm. I turned back around and walked to my closet.

 

"Where is she, anyways?" He asked.

 

"...dead..." I took a shaky breath. "She died 2 years ago." I said quietly.

 

I opened my closet doors and flipped on the light to my walk-in closet. I stared into the bare bulb and blinked my eyes rapidly trying to get rid of any tears that formed. I felt a brush of air and then a strong hand grip my shoulder.

 

"I'm sorry... don't cry... please." He said.

 

what? But I'm not..I touched my cheek with my fingertips and held my hand in front of my face. The tips of my fingers were shiny and damp, and I realized I was crying. Once I had realized it, I began to cry even more. I cupped my face in my hands and hunched my back. I stood there, sobbing silently. Kellen tensed up. I tried to stop crying, and I sniffled before looking up at him. I was about to apolpgize, when all of a sudden he pulled me into his arms. He held me lightly as if he thought if he squeezed me too hard I would shatter. I was stunned for a moment, then melted into the embrace.

 

~KELLEN'S P. O.V.~

 

After she said it was her mother in the cottage, I looked over at the nightstand to see what time it was, and something else caught my eye. I shifted in the bed and grabbed a picture and held it in my hands while examining it. It was a picture of Maddy and who I assume was her mother, laughing. They were both holding ice cream cones and each had some vanilla ice cream smeared across the side of their face. They looked happy.

 

"You look just like her." I said with a small indistinguishable smile spreading upon my lips.

 

"Don't touch that" she hissed harshly.

 

I looked at her and set it back down where it was just a moment ago. She walked away and opened her closet. It was pretty large, but what baffled me was the fact that it was filled with clothes and shoes.

 

"Where is she anyways?" I asked.

 

There was a short silence.

 

"...dead..." she took a shaky breath, and continued. "She died 2 years ago."

 

When she said that, I saw a small droplet roll down her cheek. I shot up and I was by her side in an instant. I placed a hand on her shoulder.

 

"I'm sorry... don't cry... please..." I said quietly.

 

She touched her cheek then she just began crying even more. She hunched her back and cupped her face in her cheeks. I tensed up. I didn't know what to do. I opened my mouth to say something but no words escaped my lips. She looked up at me. I looked into her bright green eyes and I instantly knew what to do. I pulled her towards me and wrapped my arms around her softly. In her state, I felt like If I held her any tighter she would crack like a porcelain doll. She tensed a slight bit, then she calmed down and rested her head against my chest. Then, her cellphone rang. I cleared my throat and let my arms fall to my sides.

 

"You should get that."

 

She shiffled one last time and wiped her cheeks before nodding and walking over to her phone.

 

~MADDY'S P. O.V.~

 

Out of nowhere, my phone rang. Kellen cleared his throat and released from the hug.

 

"You should get that" he said softly.

 

I sniffled one last time and wiped my cheeks before nodding. I walked over to my phone and picked it up. I looked at the caller I.D. and it was Brooke. I cleared my throat and and answered.

 

"Hey! What's-"

 

"HE'S AT MY HOUSE!" she yelled.

 

She sounded more pissed than scared, so I assume it was someone she knew.

 

"Who is?" I asked, even though I knew the answer.

 

"NICO!" She was really freaking out.

 

I sighed. "I'll be right there." I said and hung up before she made me any more deaf.

 

"I need to go to Brooke's so-"

 

"I'll drive." He interrupted.

 

He grapped a set of keys and was about to walk out the door when I heard my dad come in from the backyard.

 

"Nonononononononono!" I said pulling him away from the door. "YOU are goin out the window."I said.

 

Before he could protest, I walked out the door. My dad just looked at me and smiled, and I smiled in return before walking out the front door. Kellen was already in his car, and waiting for me. I got in the passengers seat and looked around in the car surprised.

 

"You actually drove here?"

 

"What? Were you expecting me to fly or something?" He said irritatedly.

 

I stared out the window refusing to reply. I didn't want to say no, becauseni actually did kind of expect something of the sort. I led him to Brookes house and when we got there, I just walked in. The last thing I expected was to find them making out headedly on the couch, which was exactly what I walked in to.
