Disabling Copy Paste on story content?

So, I've mentioned once or twice that I pretty much live on noveljoy, and one of the reasons that I'm comfy in posting all of my stories there is because they have disabled the copy paste function to members reading your work. Basically this means that while you can copy the summary, title, and comments on said story into a word document or wherever, you cannot copy the story's chapters. I'd like this feature to be implemented before I feel comfy posting anymore of my chapters.

  • I find it easier to give a proper critique when I can copy what an author has written paste it in the comments and change it up to show then how I mean instead of typing it all out...

  • I like having the quote I refer to as well, but in some cases, I feel certain writers, like myself, would be more comfortable knowing that their work can't be saved onto another person's hard drive. If critiquing is something you'd like to do for people, maybe Sparkatale could also open a beta reader system and something like the DocX system on Fictionpress. That way, if you'd like to reference quotes, you can still do it with the author's express permission on a copy that they send you to critique. Otherwise, I think being refused the right to copy a writer's hard work in your own personal Word document is perfectly acceptable

  • But that is where the writer should have enough sense to not put up all of the story if they are looking for said story to be published. You wish to have a proper critique and edit? Then do as I do and pay for an editor. That way a) All of your story is not on the net for someone to steal, b) You have added proof that the original story is yours if someone does try to steal it. c) You have a professional looking over your work and fixing all the little things everyone else tends to forget.

  • Oh, right, so I should basically pull all my stories from the site because I want to be published, so I shouldn't collect an audience first, it's not important that there are other ways for you to critique, it's just important that I shouldn't want the security to share my work before I try to publish it, a

  • *and I shouldn't suggest to a site that encourages writing to protect the author's work from thieves

  • I must say, your logic is FLAWLESS.

  • Did I say pull all your stories? NO! I suggested you not post the whole story on the site.

  • And I explained that there were other ways for you to critique people. I'm offering the suggestion because even if I don't post all my story, I'd like security in knowing no one can even plagiarize a few chapters.

  • And I was explaining to you how to fully protect all your story. The copy and paste feature is no barrier if someone wants your story. There is that crappy little print screen button that they can push. Next time I think it would be better to not jump to a conclusion and snap at someone for offering their opinions.

  • Oh and I should let you know, if you post all your story on a sight like this of FF, no one will be willing to go out and buy your book. That is why I suggested not posting all your story also. *sigh* and this is why I don't help the younger writers. I try to help, but get my head bitten off in the process...

  • I just have to say something here. I'm not taking either side to be clear. I like pasting quotes for critiques, but I also am not comfortable posting my larger stories on here because of plagiarism concerns. However, I disagree with your comment, Talena, about 'if you post stories on Fictionpress or on here, people won't buy your book'. This is flawed logic. There are authors who have written books originally on fictionpress and then have published their books, which have then been bought. If you don't believe me, look up Sarah Maas. She has a few books, and her first, Throne of Glass, was originally posted on fictionpress.

  • A lot of writing sites do have this, but at the moment I don't think there's much need for concern. SparkaTale is still a small site, so although disabling copy and paste would eliminate one way to plagiarize one's work, it doesn't take out all. I also agree with Talena on the fact that I do like to copy certain lines and paragraphs when giving reviews, but as a fellow author I understand your worries about plagiarism. At the moment I don't think it's a cause for great concern as this site isn't as big as FP, Wattpad or Noveljoy, but there would more than likely be cause to reconsider this in the future. -Not trying to take either side here, by the way. ^^
