A trope that I've been seeing gain popularity is post zombie apocalypse stories, some including zombies that can think again, either by science or magic. It's a setting I've been thinking of trying out, but maybe not with zombies.

I feel personally that the idea of Zombie novels is starting to become stale. There are some wonderful novels about it, and obviously it has been spearheaded by The Walking Dead, but it's just been overdone by now. Just my opinion.

However, there are other ways you can incooperate danger into an apocolyptic work: Perhaps it's set after the basis of a nucluer war, where humanity had been bombarded back centuries intellectually while animals and other mammals had evolved dramatically. You could set a story about the basis of cloning, where the clones are discriminated against and they end up taking arms and unleashing war. 

I like the idea of ghosts, as well.

I never read zombie novels before, but if this give you a new unique idea, I hope they might help. They're just manga.

Under my lost favorite list, but they can never be forgotten to my mind.
