Caring Dance

Raindrops dripped from the weighted clouds, splashing into the nearby pond and creating thin ripples in the water's surface. The liquid slid off of tree leaves and burst on her head as she gripped a hand. A hand warmer and nicer than the nature around them.

Her eyes glanced to the side, taking in his face. Tears streamed down to his chin, his lips pressed tightly together as he tried to hide the feelings welling up from inside him.

When he saw her gentle gaze, he gave a small smile, squeezing her fingers with his.

"Don't worry," he whispered, his voice so quiet and strained. "We can have one last hour together."

She returned his smile and gave a small nod, resting her head on his shoulder. 'One last hour, won't ever be long enough,' She thought, turning her sight to the moonlit sky. She could see small streams of orange light flicker at the horizon.

He pulled her hair, twisting it about his fingertips, then pushed her head away softly. It gained him a look of sorrow filled confusion.

"Come on, let's go to the pier," he urged, his words wavering, pulling her up to her feet. "The sunrise is the most beautiful there."

She nodded, allowing him to pull her along toward the boardwalk that crossed the pond's deep waters. The wind tickled her bangs, blowing it across her vision.

"You haven't been talking much," he told her silently, giving her a look of worry. "If it's about, you know... just try not to think of it. Don't let our last date be ruined. Remember? It's supposed to be fun. Let's enjoy it while we can," he reassured.

"How can I not think of it? Your sentence is tomorrow-"

Grabbing her arm, he moved her to his front. He put his forehead against hers, pressing a finger against her lips. "Shh. Don't say another word," he cut her off.

A few moments later, she heard him hum. It was a sweet tune, one that she remembered from several months ago.

He wrapped his arms around her and pulled her foot forward just as he placed his opposite back. Then he began leading them into a short, five step dance.

She glanced up at him in confusion. "Why-"

"Shh," he once more interrupted her flow of words. "Just go with the dance. It will look beautiful in the rising sun. I promise you that."

She smiled, allowing him to manipulate her once more.

The sun sailed up above the horizon, sending it's rays across the pond and to the rest of the world. The rain had ceased, leaving their drops to sparkle and glitter in the light.

And the she was alone, the feeling of immense happiness fluttering away from her in mere seconds.

She could hear his begs and pleas.

They took him away.

Away to a place she won't see ever see him again.

At least, until she was sentenced as well.

Then they could meet up again in their next life, sharing the same days of wonder and sorrow.
