Something didn't feel right. I threw my backpack on the couch and walked into the kitchen. I cautiously took out an apple from the fridge and took a bite. I strolled into my room when I heard sobbing. With a puzzled look on my face, I investigated the house. The lounge room was clear, the bathroom was. I opened the door to my mum's room and found her crying on her bed.
"Mum... mum, what's wrong?" I soothed, crawling over to hug my mum. She opened her eyes and moved her hair from her face. Her tears were still rolling down her face.
"Ohh Firebird. My boss fired me..." cried my mum. She went back to sobbing as I rubbed her back.

What? We were in a bad situation now. My cafe job can't support us. I calmed my mum down and let her out to the kitchen. Her hair was damp with tears and her face was blotchy. I switched off all the lights we didn't need to save money. I warmed up some sausage rolls and put them on a plate for us to eat.
"We will work it out," I smiled sadly. My mum nodded as she munched on her sausage roll. I jumped in surprise when my phone rang.

"Hey Phe! Do you want me to take you to work?" asked my best friend, Jax. I rolled my eyes at my nickname. Phoenix is such a cool name, my mum calls me Firebird so he calls me Phe.
"Sure. Just my mum is a little upset. I might need your help. Can you come over a little early?" I asked. Jax was always my go-to man for help.
"Sure, I will be there in ten minutes," he replied.
'Thanks, you are the best. See ya!" I hung up. I got changed into normal clothes and threw my school uniform in the washing basket. It was my last year of school and I couldn't wait to chuck out the ugly uniform. I slipped on my boots and waited in the lounge room for Jax.

Why was my mum fired? I didn't think her boss was a jerk. He knew my mum needed to job to support us. What an idiot. I tidied up the cushions and put all the dishes in the sink. It was a habit I had when I was nervous. It also come from being a waitress at a cafe. Sure enough, Jax arrived just on time. He let himself in and gave me a big hug. My face must've given my feelings away.

"What's wrong Phe?" he asked softly.
"We could barely afford everything before and now mum has lost her job," I whispered. I had been so strong when I was comforting mum but Jax's puppy eyes broke me open.
"Woah. I'm so sorry. Can she get a new one?" he asked.
"Dunno. Hopefully," I sighed.
"Well we can think of something on the way. We really need to leave now if we want to be on time!" Jax said hurriedly. He never liked to be late.

------------------------------------------------------------

Jax opened the door of the Little Bird Cafe and I was welcomed in by singing bells. I waved hello to some regular customers and followed Jax behind the counter. Jax didn't work here but he helped out so often that he probably could. We smiled a hello at Mrs Lambridge and got to work. We had planned to talk to her after my shift.

I took a few orders before grabbing the plates from the kitchen and delivering them to the tables. It was a pretty simple job but it kept me on my toes. I delivered two milkshakes to table 42 and smiled as I saw who it was.
"Oscar! And Oscar's friend... What's up?" I smiled, placing their milkshakes on the table.
"Phoenix, you work here?" Oscar asked. He was a friend from school and played football with Jax.
"And so does Jax apparently! Hey, I am Colton," the other boy laughed, pointing to Jax wearing an apron in the kitchen.
"Nice to meet you. Yeah. Jax just tags along," I nodded, "Have a good one!"

I left the two boys to chatting to find Jax in the kitchen, singing to the radio. I cleaned up the dishes on tables and wiped them down. Soon enough, my shift was finished.
"Ready to go?" Jax asked. I nodded in return. Jax had a football game tonight so we needed to head to the fields. Jax and I are inseparable. Jax comes to work with me, I come to his football games. One time, teachers spilt Jax and I up at school camp because girls and boys can't sleep in the same area. I cried so hard that they felt sorry for me and let me sleep in the corner of the boys area, next to Jax only. Haha the good old times.

We jumped into his car and drove off. I turned the radio on and tapped my foot to the beat.  Soon enough, we had arrived at the football grounds. There was no one on the stands yet so I took a seat right in the middle. We were half an hour early so I waited by myself. It was a bit cold so I put my hoodie on. I was taking photos with my phone when someone tapped my shoulder. I turned around to come face-to-face with Colton.
"Hey. Phoenix right?" he asked.
"Yeah," I nodded.
"Cool name. Can I sit here? Or is it reserved for your boyfriend or something?" he asked nicely.
"Haha, in my dreams. Go right ahead, I don't mind," I smiled.
"Thanks. You like photography?" Colton inquired. Man he liked to ask questions.
"Mmmhmm. My pride and joy," I nodded. He seemed pretty nice. To be honest, I don't know why he isn't playing football. He seems to be muscular. I was just about to ask when the horn sounded for the game to start. The stands were pretty packed by now, but mostly with the football team's girlfriends.

We watched intently as Jax and Oscar lead their team. They seemed to be the best players. I could name a few others in the team but I generally nod and smile when Jax talks about football. It was getting pretty cold so I pulled my hands inside the sleeves of my hoodie and hugged myself.
"Cold?" Colton asked. His chocolate eyes looked into my green ones.
"You could say that..." I smiled.
"You know, it's pretty ironic that you are call Phoenix and your hair is red, orange and yellow," Colton stated.
"Mmmhmm," I nodded. Not many people actually noticed that. I had red hair before but I dyed it to make it the colours of a Phoenix. My eyes flicked back to the game and I smiled as I saw it was half time.

"How come you aren't out there?" I asked.
"Football ain't my sport," Colton simply replied.
"What is then?" I inquired.
"Skateboarding..." Colton nodded.
"Cool. I always wanted to skateboard," I day-dreamed.  It's true actually. I never had the balance though. Well I haven't tried since I was nine...

I jumped as my phone buzzed. I picked it up and frowned as I saw it was my mum.
"Mum?"
"Hey Firebird. How are you?" my mum asked.
"Good. What's up?" I inquired.
"Well sweetie, we...
"We what?" I replied hastily.
"We can't afford rent this week," my mum sighed.
"Jax's parents could give us a loan?" I offered. This is kind of last resort. His parents have always wanted to help us but my mum always declines.
"No firebird, you know I am not going to accept money from them," she replied.
"Well what now then?" I huffed.
"We sell the car..." she decided.
"How are you going to go places?" I asked.
"We will put those old bikes in the garage to use!" she replied. It was a good idea except my bike is from when I was ten. I probably don't fit it any more. I said goodbye and my mum hung up. Okay that was a lot to take in.

I am officially poor.

"Everything okay?" Colton asked, breaking me out of my thoughts.
"Uhh, not really. I'll be okay though. I guess," I mumbled. Colton ran a hand through his brown quiff and his chocolate eyes gazed into my green eyes.
"Anything I can help with?" he asked. That was sweet of him but I don't exactly want to tell the whole world.
"No, it's fine. Thanks for the offer though," I smiled. I fiddled with my beanie and pushed my fire coloured hair behind my ears. I watched Oscar and Jax get another score. Boys were so rough on the field! The bell sounded for the end of the game and I waved goodbye to Colton. I dashed down the stairs and ran over to Jax. I jumped on his back and laughed.

Jax got changed and we drove back to my place. I guess Jax might have to be my ride everywhere until we can afford a new car. That might be a long time though...

Uhh school tomorrow. I guess I will have to walk to school. Jax dropped me off and I thanked him. He was such an awesome friend. I opened the door and found my mum sitting on the floor. All of our bills were sitting on the ground around her.
"Hey, don't let them get to you," I soothed, putting my bags down on the ground.
"Aww Phoenix, we will get through this I promise," she sighed.
"Okay. Lets just head to sleep now," I suggested.
"Mmkay, see you in the morning sweetie," she smiled sadly.
"You too mum."

I flopped down on my bed and pulled the covers over me. Today was tiring. I am sure mum and I will work through this. I fell asleep to the sound of the city.

--------------------------------------------

I fluttered my eyes open to see a note on my bedside table. I reached out to grab it. I unfolded it and read what was inside.

Someone called about the car. I have gone to meet them. Have fun at school, say hi to Jax for me.
xxx Mum

I stretched out my arms and put the note back down. I glanced over at my clock to see it was 7:34am. I had twenty minutes and then I had to leave. I slipped on my school uniform and grabbed my bag. I had a drink of juice and a muesli bar. I made a sandwich for lunch and walked out the door, locking it behind me. I am going to have to walk to school so I trotted down the driveway and continued along the path.

I fast-walked all the way to school and arrived just as the bell rang. Jax found me and we walked to class together. You know, I don't think it's too bad being poor. I am sure we can get out of it soon. We just need to get back onto our feet.

First period, we had English. I enjoy english, we get to read novels and then analyze them. Jax complained the whole time but brightened up later on in the day. The first four classes went quick and soon it was lunch. I sat down at a table next to Jax and his friends. Oscar sat next to me and I was surprised Colton wasn't with him.
"Phoenix, wanna come to the skatepark?" Oscar asked. They ask me every single day at lunch since the start of this year. They are obsessed.
"I will come today..." I gave in.
"Really?" Jax spluttered.
"Yep!" I smiled. The boys were surprised I was coming. They hung out there every afternoon and I always had an excuse not to go. I kinda want to see if Colton is there though. He makes me wonder.
"Wow, Phe is actually coming. Are you sick?" Jax chuckled. He touched my forehead lightly. I slapped it away.
"No. Now leave me alone," I glared.
"Okay!" Jax said, putting his hands up in surrender. The boys know I can get angry. I would never get upset at Jax but anyone else, oh they would be in for a lot of pain. I excused myself to the bathroom and went to my locker to get my books. I had photography next! The bell rang for us to move and I skipped happily to my class.

---------------------------------------------------

I put my books away and walked to Jax's car. I waited for him as he chatted to his football friends. I had to work first so we were meeting up after my shift. I was intrigued by what the guys can actually do on scooters and skateboards. Jax approached me and unlocked the car. I slid into the passenger seat as Jax sat down in the driver's seat. His car roared to life and we took off.

"Jax..."
"Phe..."
"I kinda have a plan though. I need your help," I asked.
"I am all ears...as long as its not illegal!" he chuckled.
"Well, I want to give mum my job and I can get a new one," I explained.
"Mmm, can't Olivia just look online?" Jax replied, using my mum's first name.
"Well it would be quicker for her to get a job this way. I am sure Mrs Lambridge wouldn't mind, she's just an old lady who loves everyone," I laughed. Mrs Lambridge was a sweet old lady. She owned the Little Bird Cafe where I work.
"Okay. We have some business to do!" Jax laughed.

We pulled up outside the cafe and strolled inside. We took our usual positions behind the counter and began to work. This afternoon was easy and I didn't have to do much. Jax just added strawberries to cakes for an hour. I wiped down a few tables and before I knew it, we were done!

I called Jax over so we could chat to Mrs Lambridge.
"Mrs L, we need to chat," Jax smiled.
"Sure kids, what can I do for you?" she replied cheerfully.
"My mother needs a job and I was wondering if she could take over for me?" I asked straight out.
"Sure honey, just get her to come in tomorrow with her resume. If she's half as good as you two, I would hire her in a heartbeat," she assured. I was surprised she actually said yes. OMG! Yay! Mum definitely has a chance!

We strolled outside and hopped back into Jax's car.
"To the skatepark!" Jax cheered. I nodded in reply.

----------------------------------------------------------

I sat down at the edge of the park and watched the guys show off and do tricks and flips. I laughed as one of them fell off and hit his tailbone. That would've hurt. Oscar did a 180 on his skateboard as Jax flipped around on his scooter. The guys were amazing! I took out my phone to capture some pics. The boys enjoyed some paparazzi. I scrolled through my photos and found some great ones of the guys in mid-air.

I was taking a photo when someone stuck their face in front of my phone. I laughed as I looked up to see who it was.
"Hey Colt," I greeted.
"Hey Nix," he greeted back. I laughed at our new nicknames. He sat down awkwardly next to me and looked up at all the other guys. It was nice to have some company.
"Didn't expect to see you here..." he stated.
"They convinced me, I wish I could do awesome tricks like that!" I laughed. His smile was gorgeous and his eyes twinkled as he chuffed at me.
"Want me to teach you?" he asked.
"Really?! That would be awesome!" I smiled excitedly. I can't believe her actually offered.
"Come on," he encouraged. He held out his hand and I took it. I stood up and followed him over to a flat surface. Colton look out his skateboard and placed it on the ground. He showed me how to place my feet on the board.

I carefully pushed off and almost immediately fell off. Colton caught me in his arms and helped me stand up.
"Thanks," I said, getting my balance again. I tried again and this time, I held onto Colt. I was on a roll and finally got the hang of it. I pushed my foot again and kept going faster. I felt on top of the world until... I hit a rock. The skateboard stopped and I went flying. I hit the ground and cried out in pain.

"Owww, owww," I cried. Colton ran over and knelt at my side. He gently put his hands under my back and helped me sit up.
"You okay?" he asked softly. I looked into his chocolate eyes and laughed.
"No not really.." I sighed. My head hurt and I had a big scrape down the side of my leg. I don't know where my hat went. Colton hugged me in his arms when I heard Jax come over.

"Buddy, move along! Phe you okay?" Jax yelled. Colton let go of me and I was welcomed into Jax's arms. I rolled up my hoodie sleeves and inspected my body.
"Damn, we better get you home. Lets grab pizza on the way okay?" Jax soothed. I nodded as Jax picked me up. I was quite skinny and Jax was strong so it was easy for him.
"Sorry Nix, I'll see you later I guess..." Colton mumbled.
"It's okay, bye!" I called after him. I was really sore. I rubbed my neck as Jax put me down in the passenger seat. Oscar put Jax's scooter in the boot and Jax took off. I ordered pizza on the phone and we stopped to pick it up.

----------------------------------------------------

"We are home!" I yelled cheerfully as I stepped inside the house. I limped a little, I was still sore from my crash.
"We have pizza...." Jax added.
"Ahhh good kids!" my mum laughed, stepping out into the lounge room. It was nice to see her smile. We all sat down on the couch and split the pizza into thirds. I rested my leg on a chair as we chomped on our dinner.
"So how was work?" my mum asked, trying to spark some conversation.
"Great," Jax replied.
"Oh mum. We got you a job too!" I added casually.
"You WHAT!" She yelled.
"Yep. Mrs L said you can bring your resume in tomorrow," Jax informed.
"Awww, come here. I love you two!" My mum said, opening her arms. Yeah, Jax was basically part of the family. We all had a big hug and celebrated our win. My mum ruffled Jax's black hair and rubbed my arm. I winced at that which brought her to ask what happened.

Of course I had to explain the whole thing but at least I got some extra sympathy.

Yay! It was the weekend!! I woke up to see Jax sleeping beside me. We must've fallen asleep during the movie. I rolled out of bed and quickly changed into my clothes. Jax woke up when he heard me mucking around. I checked my phone for messages and replied to some texts.

"Morning Phe."

"Hey Jax."

Jax got up and I left the room so he could get changed. I smelt something yummy in the kitchen and found my mum with pancakes.

"Hey Mum!"

"Hello Firebird. Did you have a good sleep?" she replied sleepily.

"Mmhmm."

"Morning Olivia," Jax mumbled.

"Morning Jax."

We all sat down at the bench to devour our pancakes. It was Mum's first shift this morning! She also sold the car so we had some extra money in the bank to save up. Hmm, I had to save to go to Uni next year. Today, Jax and I are going for a job hunt.

I limped over to the sink and put my dirty plate inside. My leg is feeling much better. I am not wincing at every move now. I hobbled back to my mum and gave her a kiss on the cheek.

"We will be back soon! Have a good shift," I smiled to my mum. She waved goodbye as Jax and I walked out the door. The air was chilly and the wind whipped at my hair.

"Got any ideas of what I could get for a job?" I asked Jax as he pulled out of our driveway. He had a funny face on as he concentrated on not hitting our neighbours boat. They always seemed to park it on the road. Dumb people.

"Hmmm Woolworths?" Jax offered. I scoffed at him.

"No way. That's just. No something else please?" I whined. It also needs to be somewhere close so I can walk there.

"Well. You could help out in my aunties cafe but you would have to drive there. I could take you but I might be busy. Maybe you could try the trains again?" he offered softly.

This was a touchy subject. Trains. Tears stung at my eyes as I shook my head. I have tried, all the time, to go on trains. I can never bring myself to do it though. Not since then... I shook that thought out of my head and wiped my tears away. Jax rubbed my shoulder and whispered, "Sorry."

We spotted a nice boutique around the corner and pulled over. They were open so I strolled in with confidence. They had cute chalkboards out the front with their specials and inside they had racks and racks of amazing designer clothes. It was heaven! The counter was empty so I rang the bell. A flustered lady came out, ticking things off a list.

"Hello?" she smiled fakely. She batted her eyelashes at Jax and sent him a flirty smile. Uhh she used way too much eyeliner today.

"Hi. My name is Phoenix. I was wondering if I could apply for a job here?" I smiled. Jax hadn't returned her smile and had his arm around my shoulders. Haha, she thought we were together. Jax obviously wasn't interested and was trying to make her go away.

"Sorry Hun, no jobs here. We have enough staff," she huffed. What was her problem? I thanked her although she wasn't much help. After we stepped outside, I fake gagged at her attempt to charm Jax.

"Uh. That was disgusting!" He laughed. I nodded as he jumped back into the car. Thank god I get a job there. I didn't know that chick and I dislike her already. Gross. Jax turned the car around the round-a-bout tightly and I was jerked to the edge. I hit the door with an 'oof'.

We passed the post office and bakery. Jax continued to drive and I gazed over all the shops.

"Cool. There's the skateboard shop," I marvelled, looking at the graffiti covered shop. It was a cool sight.

"I need to get some new wheels for Oscar's birthday present," he explained, pulling into a nearby parking lot.

"I wish I had my own board. Then I could ride everywhere. OMG! There we go. I just need to learn how to skateboard and save up for one!!" I smiled, walking into the shop. Had agreed but I stopped listening as we stepped into skate wonderland.

I gaped in awe as I looked around. There were shelves full of skateboards, shelves full of wheels, posters everywhere. This place was awesome! Jax grunted hello to the shopkeeper and began inspecting the wheels. I began to check out all the art on the underneath of the skateboards. Someone had done a tree with branches and skulls as flowers. Pretty damn cool. I flipped over another board as a poster caught my eye.

'Staff wanted! Ask at counter for more details.'

I quickly put the skateboard down and ran over to Jax. I frantically tapped him on the shoulder and he spun around with a questionable face.

"Mm?"

"The shop is looking for staff!"

"Cool! You should totally apply!"

"But I don't know anything about skateboards..."

"Oscar and Colton can teach you,"

"I guess,"

"So are you going to?"

"Sure! I'll give it a shot," I smiled. I felt a sudden boost of confidence and fixed up my hat. My favourite hat had gone missing yesterday at the skatepark so I had an old flat cap on.

Jax soon finished picking wheels for Oscar and we headed up to the counter. Jax bought the wheels and let me have a chat. I took a deep breath and began.

"Hi. You have a poster saying you want new staff. Would it be possible for me to apply?" I asked.

"Sure. Can I please have your resume?" The shopkeeper asked. He looked about thirty and had dark brown hair. He had a sweet British accent and rubbed his stubble on his chin. I nodded and pulled out my paperwork. I handed it over and he flicked through it. He kept mumbling to himself and flicked his eyes up to me.

"Okay Phoenix. Cool name. I'm Rick and you start on Monday at eight in the morning. See you then," the shopkeeper beamed.

"Thank you! Thank you!! See you then!" I squealed. It was a little high pitched and Jax held his ear. I was practically jumping up and down, bouncing all over the place as we walked back out to the car.

"Wow, second shop! Yay, I officially work at the skateboard shop. Rick seemed pretty casual about hiring me but I ain't complaining!" I screamed. Jax rubbed his forehead and slid into the car. I texted Oscar to tell him to good news. He was happy for me and said he would meet up sometime to run over the basics of skateboarding with me. Yes! Jax had to go to football training so he dropped me home. Mum was still at the cafe, working, so I warmed some leftover pizza up for lunch.

I was googling skateboarding, being careful to not use up all of our data. I found some good sites which explained the dynamics, tricks and parts of a skateboard. I knew the difference between a longboard, cruiser and trick deck. I can also tell if someone rides Regular, Goofy or Mongo. The way Colton was teaching me was Regular. Suddenly, I had an epiphany, I could buy a skateboard and ride everywhere. Then I wouldn't need Jax or trains to take me! YES! Colton might need to teach me a bit more first though. I quickly texted Jax my idea and shut down Google. I needed to save some internet for later.

I grabbed a bottle of water and my book and plonked down on the couch. I flicked to my current page and resumed reading.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

I was almost at the end and I was sitting on the edge of my seat. The protagonist was just about to unveil who the murderer was! I frantically read the page when someone knocked on the door. I jumped at first, in surprise and sighed as I dog-eared the page. I was frustrated that someone interrupted the best part of my book. I wondered who would be at the door too. Usually it was Jax or Mum that came to our house. Soldiers ears pricked up in alert and he ran over to the door. I fixed my favourite beanie on my head and swung open the door.

"Nix!" Colton smiled. What was he doing here?

"Hey Colt. What's up?" I asked, letting him come inside.

"Hope you don't mind be swinging by. Uhh Oscar gave me your address...." He trailed off. I had sat back down on the couch and sipped from my water.

"That's fine," I nodded.

"Well I found your hat at the skatepark and wanted to make sure you were okay," he smiled, handing my flat cap back to me. I missed this thing!! I was wondering where it went.

"Thanks! Yeah I'm fine, just a few bruises. Nothing serious," I nodded. My phone buzzed and I looked at the time. It was three in the afternoon. My stomach grumbled in hunger.

"That's good. Look, I was just about to grab a burrito. Want to come with?" Colt offered. He was so kind sometimes. He chocolate eyes bored into mine and I couldn't bear to resist.

"Yes please! I will just grab my stuff," I beamed, jumping from the couch.

I grabbed my purse and chucked on my converse sneakers. I followed Colton outside and felt the cool air rush at my skin. I trotted down the pathway and took a seat in Colton's car on the leathery passenger side. He turned on the ignition and the radio crackled to life, blaring with rap music. Colton pulled out of my driveway and headed towards the shopping centre. We drove without chatting. As cliche as it sounds, the silence was comforting. I nodded my head to the beat of a familiar rap song. I couldn't pick who sung it but I knew the lyrics from somewhere.

Colton pulled up at a familiar restaurant. Mmm. The spicy smell of burritos hit my mouth and triggered my stomach growl. I slid out of the car and shut the red car door behind me. I fixed my beanie and followed Colton inside.

"For two?" The waitress beamed as she greeted us in the doorway. She had a genuine smile on her face and her brown frizzy hair bounced in excitement.

"Yup," Colton grunted.

"Right this way. Have a nice date!" She chirped, leading us to a window table. I blushed and sat down. It was a little formal for a burrito shop but it cool. Colton and I read over the menu and strolled up to the counter to order. I paid for my meal and sat back down, sipping from my bottle of water.

"Make art not war. I like it," Colton smiled. I realised he was gesturing to my black and grey beanie with that phrase quoted on it.

"Me too," I nodded as he sat down opposite me. I fiddled with the ends of my hair.

"Oh! I got a new job!" I smiled.

"Great. Where?" He asked back, taking a sip of his juice.

"The skateboard shop near the post office," I nodded. I forgot the name but I'm sure I will find out tomorrow.

"Wow! Didn't see that coming. Do you need any help on figuring out skateboards?" He offered.

"Yes! That would be epic if you would help! Hit me," I beamed. The waitress left our food on the table for us and gave me a wink. She was seriously getting on my nerves.

Colton explained things like the different types of wheels, different tricks and good brands to me over lunch. We chomped on our burritos and chatted about skateboarding. Co,ton had a sparkle to his eyes and I could tell he was enjoying himself. I don't think he's met a girl that will chat with him about skateboards before. He was obviously getting carried away. I didn't mind though. I soaked up the information and gazed into his gorgeous chocolate eyes. I wiped my mouth and guzzled down my water.

"Thanks so much for lunch Colt," I thanked, standing up from my seat.

"No probs Nix," he smiled back.

"Aww you guys are too cute! I love your pet names for each other!" squealed the waitress. Argh she really annoyed me.

"Well we aren't...." I began to say but Colton cut me off.

"Thanks, we better get going though," he chuckled, taking my hand and pulling me out the door.

He kept a tight grip until we got to his car.

"What was that?" I asked, confused at his actions. Colton rubbed the back of his neck and turned a shade of red.

"Well I thought... We... You... I had a good time and maybe it really could count as a date?" He suggested shyly. I slid back into the car and smiled to myself. Colton likes me? Awww that's cute. He's cute actually. Hmm let's give it a shot.

I looked into his worried brown eyes and smiled.

"Sure."

"Really?"

"I had a great time," I laughed. Colton sat down and ran a hand through his hair.

"Thank god," he muttered. I could see his shoulders relaxing, he was obviously nervous. He started the car and drove off.

I hadn't realised until now that I like Colt. Not just as a friend but really like-like. Even if I have only known him for a week. I watched him concentrate on the road but it wasn't hard to tell he was happy from my response. He pulled into my apartment complex and we walked up the stairs to my apartment.

"Thanks for taking me out Colt," I smiled.

"It was my pleasure," he beamed back. We leaned into each other and our lips connected. We held each other in a hug and I felt Colton place something in my palm. We broke apart, still holding each other's hands.

"Tomorrow night?" He suggested.

"Perfect," I nod.

"Just like you. Until then Nix..." He complimented. He kissed my hand and strolled down the stairs and back into his car. I blushed and ran inside, shutting the door behind me.

I dialled Jax’s number and he picked up on the second ring.

“Phe! What's up?” Jax chirped through the phone.

“Umm. I just kissed Colton…”

“What! Where? Why?”

“He came to give me my hat back and took me for lunch. Then we kissed and he asked me on a second date!” I squealed.

“Oh yeah… I gave him your address. I think he's a pretty decent guy ya know.”

“What school does he go to?”

“Oscar said he was in his first year of Uni.”

“Wow. Only a year difference.”

“Mhmm. Got to go, I will pick you up at eight for your first shift tomorrow!”

“Yay, see you then Jax!”

“Bye.”

Now I have gotten that off my chest. It felt good to tell someone, even if it was Jax who really couldn't care less about my love life as long as I was happy. At least he listens to me anyway. I tirelessly flicked through the TV channels. Uhh nothing to watch. I remembered the piece of paper that Colton has slipped into my hand. I fumbled in my pocket for it and opened it up.

Aww. He gave me his phone number! I pulled my phone out of my pocket and filled in a new contact. I texted him a simple ‘Hey’ and laid back on the couch. I opened my book up to resume reading

--------------------------

I jumped as someone opened up the front door.

“Firebird!” called my mum.

“Mum! How was your shift?” I asked, grabbing her bag and putting it down for her.

“Wonderful. The lady that runs it is so sweet and the customers are kind,” smiled my mum.

I am glad we are getting on top of things. Mum’s income has helped and we aren’t in so much trouble. Things are still tough but we get buy. I gave mum a kiss on the cheek and handed her some food.

Suddenly, my phone beeped. I pulled it back out from my pocket. I smiled as I saw it was from Colton.

“Oooh. Who’s that?” my mum teased.

“Umm… this guy....” I replied shyly. Mum was not suspecting this as and answer. I rarely have boyfriends or go on dates.

“Eeek! What’s his name? What’s he like? Is he cute? What school does he go to? Spill!” my mum squealed. Sometimes I swear she is like a teenage girl. Gosh.

“Colton, brown hair, muscles, brown eyes, skateboards, he’s super cute, smart, is in college…” I trailed on, dreamily talking about Colton. I showed mum the text which read:

Hey Beautiful. Do you want to catch a movie for our next date?

“Damn, you’ve got a good one there Firebird,” she giggled. I shook my head at her immatureness. She hasn’t even met him yet and she thinks we're gonna get married or something. I replied a definite yes to Colton and sat down at the table with my mum as she ate her dinner.

“So… Work tomorrow eh?” Mum asks casually. She was pretty excited that I was going to work at a skateboard shop. She gets excited about everything though. I nodded and took a sip from my bottle of water.

“I’ve done some research on skateboarding and I was thinking of taking it up as a hobby. So I could get around town without a car. Since I can’t… you know… go on public transport,” I mumbled.

“Oh honey. I know it’s tough but I got over it. Just because of that incident, doesn’t mean you can never take the train or subway ever again. Firebird, you need to be strong…” my mum soothed. She rubbed my back in sympathy as tears stung at my eyes. Don’t cry Phoenix. Don’t cry.

I wiped the tears from my face and put on a smile. My mum put her rubbish in the bin and went to bed. We have only been able to afford microwavable food lately so it's all we have been eating. Plus I got a free burrito from Colt.

I took my book into my bedroom with me and slipped into my tracksuit pants and a shirt that is too big for me, it might be Jax’s actually. Flopping onto my bed, I resumed my book.

-----------------------------------

I joined in with the Hilltop Hoods as their song played on my alarm clock. Rapping along, I threw the warm, soft covers off my body and a rush of cool air hit my face. I quickly hit the off button on my clock and hustled to my wardrobe. Shivering, I quickly grabbed a new outfit, some socks and a beanie and dashed to the bathroom. It was getting cold now that it was June.

I shut the wooden door behind me and locked the lock. I placed my clothes next to the sink and reached inside the shower to start the hot water. Turning the knob, I pulled my hand away, trying to avoid the cold spray of water. I quickly stripped down and placed my pajamas in the wash basket. I slipped myself under the warm curtain of hot water.

Running my hands through my long, red, orange and yellow hair, I sighed in joy. Washing my body and hair quickly, I remembered Mum and I had a time limit for the shower. We needed to save money so I had only five minutes. You may think it is a lot but when you have to shampoo and condition hair as long as mine, it takes forever. My hair now reached my belly button. I needed to get it cut but, meh.

Rising off my body, I shut off the water and slipped out of the shower. I wrapped my towel around my body and began to dry my legs, then moved onto my torso then my arms. I slipped my clothes on and began blow drying my hair. I jumped as I heard a knock on the door.

“Phe, it's me!” a male voice called. Jax!

“Come in,” I yelled over the sound of my hair dryer. I unlocked the door and Jax walked in. I finished drying the end of my hair and turned it off. I then began to brush it out.

“Work starts in two hours so I thought I would swing by to make sure you had gotten out of bed and then we are going for breakfast,” he smiled. I winced as I pulled on a large knot in my hair. I smiled and thanked him.

Jax had insisted that he takes me for breakfast because it is my first day of work. I finally worked the knot out of my hair and carefully placed my black beanie on top of my fire-coloured hair. The re-growths were annoying me but I will dye again it soon enough.  Satisfied with my appearance, I kissed my mum goodbye and followed Jax out to his car.

“You know, you don’t have to drive me everywhere…” I smiled, slipping into the passenger seat. Even when we had a car, I still sat in this seat every day for school. That was just Jax wanting to take me to school. But now that we don’t have a car, it feels like Jax feels he is obliged to take me everywhere.

“I like to! Plus, it sounds like Colton might be taking you places too…” he teased, bumping my shoulder with his. I laughed and brushed a hair out of my face.

“Well, I had an idea yesterday,” I announced.

“Mmm?”

“If I could pull of skateboarding, I could buy my own and skateboard everywhere!”

“Hmm, sounds like a plan. Means you will have to come to the skate park more often though.”

“I don’t mind! It is kinda growing on me ya know?”

“Great! It is settled,” Jax winked.

Suddenly, my favourite song came on on the radio. I squealed and turned it up full blast. I bobbed my head to the beat. Man, I had a good feeling about today.

Jax pulled into a parking lot near the Waffle House. Yes! I could kill for some waffles right now. Sliding out of the smooth, leathery car seat, I shut the metal door behind me and followed my nose to the sweet smelling cafe. Jax chuckled as he locked the car and followed me inside. So many smells hit my nose and I thought I had died and gone to strawberry, ice-cream, maple-syrup heaven.

I skipped over to two couches in the corner. Not waiting for Jax, I plonked onto the left couch and leaned into its soft back. Picking up a menu, I cast my eyes down the list and my stomach growled at each meal. Jax sat down opposite me and also took a menu.

“Mmm, I am going to get Waffles Galore. It is waffles, ice-cream, strawberries and maple-syrup,” I smiled dreamily.

“Me too...” Jax mumbled. He ran a hand through his brown hair. Seriously, with his skinny yet strong body, hazel coloured eyes and sexy eyebrows, he reminded me of Dylan O’Brien, my all-time celebrity crush. Not that I was attracted to Jax or anything. Gross. Colton on the other hand…

Suddenly, I was tapped on the shoulder.

“Osc!” I greeted. I smiled when I saw a familiar curly blonde standing next to me.

“Hey Phoenix and Jax. What are you guys up to?” Oscar asked, giving Jax a high-five.

“Grabbing breakfast before work,” Jax nodded.

“I heard you and Colton hung out yesterday…” Oscar smiled sneakily, waggling his eye-brows.

“Mmm. He’s fun,” I replied casually. I wasn’t about to explain my love life to Oscar. Not even Jax wanted to know. He just likes teasing his friends about liking me vise versa.

“Well I’ll leave it to ya then. Bye!” Oscar waved, heading up to the counter.

Jax’s phone rang and he checked the caller ID. Almost straight away, he hung up.

“Who was that?” I asked. He didn’t normally refuse to answer someone’s call. Unless it was his ex.

“Argh my parents! Don’t get me wrong, I love them but, I don’t want to go to the unis they want me to go to. They are pestering me to apply to all these Universities near my cousins so I can rent an apartment with them but I want to go to uni with you or Oscar or any of the boys. I need some freedom from my freaky family,” Jax sighed. It was hard for him sometimes.

His dad wanted him to be a lawyer and take over the family business. Jax wants to work as a Science teacher. I hadn’t thought much about Uni. To be honest, I probably won’t be going because mum and I can’t afford it. I could always ask Grandma and Grandpa but, they are a little touchy.

“At least you know you are going to Uni…” I smiled. I wasn’t pitying myself but I was happy for Jax. I want my best friend to succeed in life.

“Don’t worry. We are getting you into Uni with me. Mmm you could go with Colton…” Jax suggested. I hadn’t thought about that before.

“Okay. Promise?”

“Promise.”

Jax abruptly stood up from his seat and made his way over to the counter. It was nice to know he was looking out for me, though, we always look out for each other. I knew he meant it when he said he was going to make sure I could go to uni. I was practically his sister and I knew his parents would help, even if my mum wasn’t happy about it. Jax and I were a case of affinity. My mum said it makes us look like charity cases. I get that but we do need the help. We are getting better though, our jobs are helping us get on top of things.

I checked the time on my phone. 8:47am. Work starts at 9:30am. Plenty of time! Plus I want to get there a little early so I can run through some stuff with my boss. I still don’t even know his name! Oh well, I’m sure I will find out soon enough.

I stared out the window and sighed as I could feel the apricity. It was starting to warm up but still a little chilly. Jax returned fifteen minutes later with two plates of yummy, steaming waffles and all the accessories.

“Thankyou,” I smiled, taking my plate from him and pulling my knife and fork out of the napkin. I dug in hungrily and wolfed down my breakfast. I savoured the taste of maple syrup in my mouth. I could get used to this! Not very healthy but delicious as ever.

I waited for Jax to finish and we thanked the waitress on the way out. Hugging my jacket close, I strolled over to Jax’s car and slid into the worn seat. Jax turned the ignition on and we were off to the skateboard shop.

I knocked on the frosty window at 9:23am. My shift starts in seven minutes. I heard shuffling and fiddled with my coat zipped as we waited. The lock clicked and the door swung open.

“Great. You’re here. Let's get started,” my boss nodded.

Jax and I stepped up and into the shop. I took off my coat and placed it on the counter. It was warm inside. Jax stood awkwardly beside me.

“Hi, my name is Rick Gordon, nice to see you again Phoenix!” my manager smiled. I never noticed before but he had a cute british accent. He looked about 24 or 25. He had light stubble on his cheeks and chin and his brown hair peeked out of a backwards flat cap. I shook his hand and Jax did the same.

“Rick, this is Jax, my best friend,” I smiled, gesturing to Jax who was nervously playing with his hair. I don’t know what he had to be nervous about, I was the one on my first shift!

“Cool, he can hang if he wants, it's cool. I’ll just show you how to work everything and show you a few things before I leave. Here is your key and here is my number if you need me,” Rick smiled, handing me a key and piece of paper.

I followed him behind the counter and Jax took a seat on a chair. Rick showed me how to use the till, where all the gift cards are, where each product belongs, the prices of different things and other general things I needed to know. I took mental notes which I prayed I would remember. If not, I could just ring Rick. At exactly 9:30am, Rick left and bid me goodbye and goodluck.

I strolled back to the counter and sat behind it on a stool.

“Lot’s to take in huh?” Jax chuckled. I nodded and turned on the radio. I decided to take a look at all the drawings on the underneath of the skateboards. Jax was testing out the skateboards and doing tricks. He was such a little boy sometimes.

I sung along to the radio because I knew Jax didn’t mind me singing. I wasn’t the best but I definitely wasn’t the worst.

I must confess, you’re lookin’ fresh (so fresh)

Yep I’m impressed, go ahead and flex (flex turn up)

Everybody be hatin' the way that you stealin' the show

'Cause, ooh, you be killin um just like Little Terio

Ooh, you can get it

Don't need no filters on pictures

Ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh

Ooh, where you from (where you from)?

Must be heaven

You'd be rich if looking good was your profession

Think I'm in love, 'cause you so sexy

“I’m glad you think I am sexy…” a voice came from behind me and startled me. I dropped the skateboard I was holding and forced my mouth shut so I wouldn’t curse. I turned around to glare at my company but was surprised to see Colton.

“Boy, I ain't talkin' about you, I'm talking to my own reflection,” I sang back as a comeback. He chuckled at me and his chocolate eyes sparkled. I put the skateboard back on the rack and stood up properly, fixing my beanie back on my head.

“So what brings you here Colt?” I ask, walking back over to the counter.

“Could ask the same Nix…” he replied smugly.

“I work here dufus.”

“How could I forget?”

“You didn’t forget, you wanted to see me!”

“Nooo…” he smiled sarcastically.

“You’re cute,” I complimented.

“No! I am manly and handsome,” he defended flirtatiously.

“Whatever, you missed me…”

“Yes I did. So what?” he smugly replied. He leaned over the counter and planted a kiss on my cheek.

“Hey! No kissing on the job!” I scolded.

“Sorry,” he shrugged.

“Did you come here for a reason?”

“Yes, to see you!”

“Anything else?”

“Yeah, I’m going to get a new deck, my other one is pretty smashed up,” he mumbled, walking off to the skateboards displayed on the wall. I decided to leave him alone.

I found Jax spinning the wheels on a longboard hung on the wall.

“Argh, please tell me your flirting is over!” he laughed.

“Yup, Colt is looking at decks,” I smiled.

“Thank God!” Jax said dramatically. We walked back to the counter and I opened my bag. I had bought a bag of chips. I opened the packet and shared some with Jax. Colton came back over with a trick deck tucked under his arm. He placed it on the counter and spotted my chips. He reached in and grabbed a few chips!

“Hey!”

“Wut?” he asked, his mouth full of chips. I huffed and scanned the deck into the machine.

“Seventy dollars please,” I said. He pay waved his card and took the deck.

“Adieu mon oiseau je t'aime,” he smiled, walking out the door and blowing me a kiss.

“What language was that?” I asked to no one in particular.

“Awww thats so cute!” Jax cooed.

“What did he say?”

“I’m not telling!”

“Why not!”

“Find out for yourself!”

“How?”

“Google?”

“Uhh I don’t know how to spell it.”

“Ask him later then.”

“Why can’t you tell me?”

“Cause you’ll want to hear it from him!”

“Argh you're killing me!”

“It was French by the way…” Jax smirked. Dammit Jax!

The rest of my shift was okay. Jax and I finished the chips and I had two more customers that bought wheels and a penny board. I looked through all the clothes. There were some cool branded shirts that I wouldn’t mind owning. Except that each shirt costs at least $40. I swear, people pay so much for a shirt worth $5 with a brand name printed on it. Although it did look pretty cool. The shirts would have to wait though, I need to save up for my own skateboard.

I swear but now, Jax has probably tried on every single hat in this shop and rode every single skateboard. He also tried out their scooters. He was in his zone, this shop was like a boy’s playground. I loves it here. Outside was cool too. It is a bit chilly to stare at the walls outside but they have had someone paint graffiti murals on the shop's walls outside. It looks spectacular. I must take a few photos someday, they would look good with a filter, awesome for a Instagram or Tumblr post.

At exactly 1:30pm, Rick showed up. He liked to keep to a schedule. Keep that in mind Phoenix, don’t be late for work. Rick had a giant smile plastered to his face as he walked in.

“Phoenix! How was your day?”

“Great. We had a few sales. How was yours?”

“Awesome! Super frikin awesome!”

“Glad to hear. Anything special?”

“My girlfriend’s ring arrived today so I am going to propose tonight!”

“Good luck! Don’t let us hold you up!”

“Just grab your gear and we can lock up.”

I headed over to Jax who was holding my bag out for me. I slid it onto my shoulder and Jax pulled me to the skateboards.

“If you want a skateboard, I will buy one for you. Choose!” he smiled. I couldn’t believe my luck. When I am older, I definitely need to repay Jax. I looked around the shop and remembered Rick needed to head out. I found a nice trick deck with a lion on the underneath and strolled up to the counter.

“Are you buying that?” Rick asked, checking out the skateboard I had chosen.

“Yeah, Jax is getting it for me,” I smiled.

“No need, you can have that one,” Rick smiled, taking the barcode off the skateboard.

“Really? Thank you!!” I squealed. My boss was truly awesome. Jax simply chuckled. I couldn’t believe my luck. I guess karma is going to catch up soon though.

I tucked the board underneath my arm and skipped out the door happily. Jax unlocked the car and I slid in. Putting my bag down in between my feet, I checked out my skateboard a little more. I cannot believe Rick is so awesome! I guess he might just be nice today because he is excited. I hope his girlfriend says yes.

“Want to head to the skate park?” Jax inquired. I am guessing he is going to teach me some more.

“Sure! Let’s test out this bay!” I wooped. Spinning the wheels, I was lost in thought of what I could do. I could try some tricks, skateboard wherever I need to go, this was going to be awesome.

We pulled up at the skatepark. There were a few people skating up and down the quater pipes and doing their favourite tricks. It had warmed up from this morning so there were more people out and about.

I strolled up to the flat surface with my new skateboard, feeling confident. Fixing up my beanie, I placed my skateboard on the ground and stepped onto it. Reassuring myself, I pushed off the ground with my feet and the skateboard rolled forward. Yes, I am doing it!

I heard a clap from behind me and squealed as I fell of the board.

“Argh! You broke my concentration!” I screamed in frustration.

“Nice to know I have that effect on you…” chuckled a deep male voice. Confused as to who it was, I spun around to see Colton. He had a smug look on his face and I couldn’t help but think how adorable he looked with a flat cap on.

“Hmm, next time, give me a little warning please!” I smiled. Colton offered his hand and pulled me up, pulling me into him and snaking his arms around my waist.

“Sorry Nix…” he teased, nuzzling my nose with his. Looking into his eyes, I gave into his lips and pushed forward for a kiss. This was what he was obviously looking forward to.

“Oh my god! Gross…” Jax gasped, turning around and walking the other way. I giggled and broke away from Colton.

“Can you teach me?” I asked sweetly, lightly knocking his hand.

“Thought you’d never ask…” he smiled, dragging me over to my skateboard.

--------------------------------

Colton was amazing! He is not only a good kisser but he taught me how to skateboard and I can also do a few tricks already. In the time of two hours! Now I can ride properly, turn, ollie and tic tac. Yes! Picking up my skateboard from the ground. I kissed Colton goodbye and returned to my sweaty best friend.

“Let's go,” he smiled.

“To the beach each, let's go get a wave. They say, what they gonna say? Have a drink, clink, found the Bud Light...” I sung. Jax playfully hit me on the arm as I skipped to his car. What? Nicki makes good music!

Sliding into the car, I turned the radio up and nodded my head to the beat of the song. Jax sung along with me as he drove out of the car park and pulled onto the main road. As we pulled up to the lights, we happened to stop next to some girls from our school. They were the dolls and always had to look pretty. My bets were they were on their way to the shops. Argh.

I wound down my window and drowned out their squealing pop music. Jax and I rapped along to the radio and smirked as we annoyed the barbie dolls next door. I almost wet myself when I heard them gasp and gossip about how rude we were.

Just as the light turned green, Jax and I turned our heads and yelled, “Build it up then we crush, kill, DESTROY!”

We left with the biggest grins on our faces and left the little pink car full of princesses in the dust.

Pulling up at the movie store, Jax asked, “Horror, Comedy or Action?”

“Horror, obviously!” I grinned. Since it was Saturday night, it meant it was our Movie night. We always stayed up watching movies. We strolled into the store and I was welcomed by the musty scent of popcorn. For some odd reason, they hand out free popcorn. Don’t ask me why but I took some anyway from the geeky guy at the counter.

“Ahh, Jax and Phe. Nice to see you on a Sat!” screeched the counter guy. I still have no idea what his name is after coming every Saturday for three years. We gave a nod as we walked over to the horror section. Digging into my popcorn, I scoop some in my mouth as I point to a few movies that look interesting.

We ‘um’ and ‘ah’ over several movies and decided on hiring out five different ones. After paying for them and waving goodbye to the counter guy.

“Do you know what his name is?” Jax asked me as we walked out of the store. I laughed and shook my head, glad I’m not the only one. We drove in silence back to Jax’s house as I read the back of the covers again.

As Jax pulled up in his driveway, I sighed as I realised how lucky he was. His house is huge and beautiful. You could say I was jealous but I loved that I could stay over whenever I wanted. I chuckled as I bent down to pat Jax’s cat, Tink. The pretty, white, ragdoll mewed as I petted in between her ears.

Jax let us inside and his mum hollered a ‘hello’ from somewhere upstairs. I flopped onto the couch and chucked my empty popcorn box in the bin next to the TV. Jax chose the first movie and Tink jumped up to snuggle on my chest.

------------------------------------

“Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeek!”

I shot up and startled the white fluff that was sleeping on my body. Panting, I looked around me and realised it was the TV. Jax was laughing so hard he was rolling on the ground. I must’ve fallen asleep during one of the movies. I put a hand to my chest and whispered, “Oh my god, oh my god, oh my god.”

“That-”

“Was-”

“PRICELESS!” Jax panted. I scowled at him and paused the movie. He was still laughing when I jumped on top of him and started tickling him. He was so ticklish it was not funny.

Poking him in the ribs, he began to squirm like crazy. With only the TV for light, I couldn’t see where his legs were going. He began to kick me as I tickled his torso some more. Jax was soon panting for air as I cackled with laughter. I was such an evil friend.

Suddenly, someone switched on the lights, causing me to gasp in surprise.

“What is happening here?” called Jax’s mum, looking down at us. I realised I was currently on top of Jax and he was all panting and his shirt was lifting up.

“Uh… tickle fight!” Jax panted.

“Okay… just… uhh, don’t wake me again,” his mum said weirdly and walked down the hallway and up the stairs again. Instantly I burst into giggles again, taking in how awkward that was.

I climbed off Jax and we sat down next to each other.

“That was weird,” Jax smiled. I just nodded and switched the lights back off. Jax pressed play as I sat down next to him and leaned my head on his shoulder, flinching as one of the characters was stabbed.

5: Five
Five

Five:

I stretched out my arms as my eyes fluttered open. I forced myself not to giggle when I spotted Jax half on the couch and half off it. I had fell asleep on his legs and gently pushed myself. Stepping around him quietly, I picked up his top half of his body and laid him on the couch. He mumbled something in his sleep as I hung a blanket on him.

Walking barefoot into the tiled kitchen, I was greeted by Jax’s step dad reading the newspaper.

“Morning John,” I smiled, helping myself to the fridge. They didn’t mind, I was always over here, practically their own daughter. John has been with Jax’s mum since Jax and I were six.

“Phoenix,” he smiled, taking a sip from his hot beverage.

I took out the juice and a cup and poured myself a drink. I walked back into the lounge room and I sat down on the couch next to Jax. He was still sleeping and mumbling something in his sleep, it sounded a lot like a page from our biology textbook, weirdo.

I smiled as Tink came running over and rubbed herself on my legs. I gave her a pat and was welcomed with purrs. I switched on the TV and turned the volume down low. The news was playing so I decided to watch. The weather man came on and I laughed to myself, the weather man was never right. He said every day that it was going to snow but it never did. It was probably cold enough to.

Fumbling around in the pocket of my jacket, I found my phone and checked it for messages.

“Morning Firebird :)” from Mum.

“Phoenix, your next shift is tomorrow afternoon, 3pm - 5:30pm,” from Rick.

Man, I felt loved! I also had a notifications on various social medias. I replied to a few of them when I heard a mumble from behind me. I spun around to see Jax groggily trying to sit up.

“Hey sleepyhead,” I greeted, turning my phone off and slipping it into my pocket.

It was obviously a little early for Jax to be speaking as he was still rubbing his eyes. He was such a baby sometimes. I led him to the kitchen and we sat down at the breakfast bench. Jax’s mum, Jenny, had woken up and was cooking bacon and eggs.

“Morning you two!” she chirped. She had obviously gotten over last night's weirdness.

“Morning,” I smiled, grabbing a piece of nearby toast.

“Morning,” Jax grunted, getting himself a glass of juice.

Jenny placed the bacon on a plate on the bench as my phone rang. I jumped as I reached inside my pocket to answer it. It was blasting out my ringtone and Jax began to dance, mocking me dancing to it. Hopping off my stool, I excused myself to the lounge room and answered my phone.

“Hello?”

“Firebird!”
“Hey mum, how are you?”

“I’m good. I was just letting you know that Mrs L paid me this morning so we are finally working things out!”

“That’s great! Go team Livnix!”

“What’s that?”

“Our team name. You know… Oliva and Phoenix mixed together!”

“Oh right. Team Livnix. Sounds awesome.”

“Well I have to go but treat yourself to a nice breakfast okay mum?”

“Sure sweetie. Say hello to Jenny and John for me.”
“Will do.”

“Love you.”

“Love you too.”

I’m glad my mum is taking care of herself. In a way, I think becoming broke has made us stronger. Not that I want it to happen again or anything. I made my way back to the kitchen and my mouth watered at the smell of all the yummy food. Jenny was a good cook. I thanked her and began to pile my plate with eggs, bacon and tomato. Digging in, I devoured my food.

---------------

Jax turned on the Xbox and slid in the game Skate 3. Apparently, we were going to vs Oscar and Colton who are together at Colton’s place. It’s cool how the internet can work like that. I logged into my Xbox Live account. Colton did the same and we made skateboarder avatars on the game. Then we had to go through stages of learning how to ollie, grind, handplant and other tricks like that. I made a mental note to ask Colton to teach me some of them.

When Jax was satisfied with how good we were, we joined Colton and Oscar’s game. We plugged in our headsets and chatted with them via our microphones.

“Woah! Good one Phe!” Oscar boomed through the headphones. I mumbled a thanks as I pulled off another trick. I heard Colton swear as he didn’t land his jump and his character died. Haha he had to start from the start again.

“Fail Colt!” I teased.

“Woah! Did anyone see that?” Jax marveled. Of course no one was watching Jax so, no one watched his ‘amazing’ grind.

I seemed to be better than all of the boys. They seemed to curse at me a lot when I performed a trick better than them. They were just sore losers. After four hours of winning for me, the boys gave up but claimed they had to get ready for football. I took this as an opportunity to skateboard home.

I said goodbye to Jax and his parents and set off on my skateboard. It was about 8km to my apartment block, not too far but not too short. It would give me time to practice and think. I walked down onto the road and set my skateboard on the ground. Pushing off the road, my skateboard started and rolled nicely along the road.

As I gained confidence, I pushed harder, causing the skateboard to go faster. I felt the air rush at my face and my fire coloured hair flowed freely in the wind. I kept my bag close to my body as I rode along the street and up onto the pathway. I felt careless and free, like all my problems were being pushed away.

I felt my phone ringing and tried to get it out of my pocket whilst still skateboarding. Sadly, this is not an easy task and  I managed to somehow fall off.

“Ouch! Hello?” I ask annoyedly. I had forgotten to check the caller ID.

“Are you okay?” A deep voice asked.

“Yeah. Uh, you just made me fall of my skateboard…” I mumbled.

“Sorry Nix. I hope you’re okay,” Colton apologised.

“Oh it’s you! All good. What’s up?”

“I was wondering if you wanted to come with me to the football game?”

“Sure, I’ll see you at six?”

“Can’t wait. Bye babe,” he said softly, hanging up.

Where were all the pet names coming from? Its cute. I think we are just dating though, we aren’t officially ‘boyfriend’ and ‘girlfriend’. I picked myself up off the ground and checked my body for damage. Crap. I ripped a hole in my jeans! My knee had a small cut and my jeans had sliced open. I could live with it I guess. I picked up my bag and set my skateboard straight. I fixed up my hoodie, trying to keep some warmth and set off.

--------------------------------------

Unlocking the door, I slipped into our apartment and placed my skateboard against the wall. My ride was pretty peaceful and I enjoyed the air. Sometimes it's just good to get away from reality. As I took in my surroundings, I felt anvils drop onto my shoulders. Here comes my  burden. There was rubbish scattered everywhere and the couch had a few rips. The floor was grimy and clothes were strewn everywhere. Colton was coming up in an hour and a half. He didn’t know my situation yet and I certainly wasn’t going to let him find out this way.

I ran around and collected all the clothes. I squished my way into our tiny laundry and stuffed them in the machine. I tried to fit as many as I could inside to save water and detergent. I then got a rubbish bag and filled it with all the trash I could see littered everywhere. I dumped that outside the front door to take down to the bin on my way out. I then took out our small broken vacuum. It didn’t work to well but it did the job. Running it over the carpeted area, I felt satisfied with my cleaning. At least our tiny apartment looked presentable now.

Putting a few things away on my way to my room, I discovered my favourite t-shirt. I had been looking for that for a while! My room was the old laundry but we squeezed that into the bathroom corner. Jax was pretty much the only visitor we ever had here. I took my shirt and slipped it on top of my current shirt. Looking in the mirror, I realised that it had a big stain on the left hand sleeve!

Cursing, I chucked it in the washing pile, although it probably wouldn’t come out. I can’t afford to buy a new shirt so I am just going to have to do with what I have. Checking the time, I realised I only had twenty minutes before Colton was supposed to be here! Far out.

Mum was probably working right now. Maybe I could borrow one of her outfits. We are basically the same petite, slim size. I dashed into her room and looked through her closet. Uh, skirts and dresses, not going to wear them! I slid various shirts, pants and scarves along on their hangars until something caught me eye. A denim jacket!

I slid it off its hanger and slipped it onto my body. It fit snuggly and even had a fleecy liner. I looked around for a shirt that could go with it and decided with a grey shirt with a moon print on the front. I rang back to my room and pulled out a pair of jeans the same colour as the jacket, light blue. I quickly changed, brushed my hair and applied light make up. Just as I slipped a beanie on, I heard someone knock on the door. Colton!

I dashed to the door and swung it open the the most gorgeous boy ever. He gave a dashing smile and his chocolate eyes seemed to sparkle.

“Hey, ready to go?” he asked gently, taking my hand.

“Yep!” I accepted it and trotted down the stairs with him. I know I was supposed the take the trash down but I wasn’t about to ruin this moment. Mum would probably do it anyway.

Colton opened the door to his car for me and I slid into the passenger seat. To be honest, it looked like he cleaned up too! He turned the car on and pulled out of the parking lot.

“Have a good day?” I asked, trying to make small talk.

“Yeah. Oscar got real annoyed at you when you beat him on Skate 3,” he chuckled.

“I bet, at least he can take it out on the field tonight.”

“Yup, are you hungry?”

“Sorta. You?”

“Definitely, want to grab some Thai?”

“You read my mind!”

We still had about forty-five minutes before the actual game started. I was definitely up for some curry.

----------------------------

Sitting down on the cold, metal grandstands, I fixed my beanie and hugged my arms to my body. Colton sat down next to me and I leaned into him to steal some body heat. I could see some of the boys jogging onto the field as I shoved my hands in my pocket. I could see Jax, number 24 and Oscar, number 09.

I jumped when the horn blared, signalling the start of the game. I watched intently as the boys bashed into each other and cheered when they scored a goal. Today’s game was super intense. The other team was our rival school, they are always trying to beat us. Our school booed when the opposition scored a goal. Our boys were smart, when it comes to football I mean, they aren’t called Jocks for nothing.

I rubbed my arms in frustration. This game was making me nervous and I was super cold. Colton tried to give me his jacket but he needed it too so I declined.  The final horn sounded and we all clapped for our team. We had won by one point! Colton and I went to greet Jax and Oscar. They were a little sweaty but I still gave them hugs, plus they were nice and warm from running around.

“Congrats! You did it!” I cheered.

“Yup. Jax and I have a little trick don’t we?” Oscar chuckled.

“They never see it coming,” Jax agreed.

“Come on, let's head off, it's cold!” Colton suggested. I nodded in agreement and took his hand as we walked to our cars.

Oscar and Jax trailed behind, chatting about something and dragging their football boots in the gravel. As we approached the cars, Colton kissed me on the cheek and leant against his car.

“Phe? Coming?” Jax asked. Looks like I was going with Jax. I nodded and gave Colton a kiss before sliding into the passenger seat of Jax’s car.

Colton had a lopsided grin plastered on his face as we drove off.

“Aren’t you two smitten?” Jax teased.

“Hey! Just wait till you get a girlfriend!” I recoiled, giving him a playful punch.

---------------------------

Opening the door to the apartment, I heard sobs coming from inside. Jax stopped talking mid-sentence as we walked inside. Putting out gear on the floor, we stepped into the small kitchen and found my mum sitting on the floor with paper around her body in a circle.

“Mum?” I asked, worriedly. She wiped her nose with the back of her hand and gave us a tight smile.

“Hello darlings,” she whispered, her voice croaky from crying.

“Are you okay?” Jax asked, looking down at all the paper. It only took me a minute to realise, they were all the bills. She should stop worrying herself.

“Don’t let them get you you mum!” I said, sitting down next to her and gathering all of the letters into a pile.

“I know. We could only just afford it this week. How did I end up this broke?” she sighed, asking no one in particular. Jax rubbed her back as I stuffed the papers in the kitchen drawer for later. She must’ve already paid them all.

“One hawiian, one meat lovers and one supreme please…” Jax said through his phone. He must be ordering pizza.

I stretched out my arms and yawned as sunlight streaked through my window. I rolled out of bed and padded into the kitchen. Taking out a muesli bar, I greeted my mum with a simple, “Mornin!”. I grabbed a packet of chips and an apple and placed them in my backpack. I also found some leftover pizza from last night and packed that.

I decided to skateboard to school so I chucked on my sport uniform, grabbed my phone and slipped on my shoes. Kissing my mum goodbye, I grabbed my skateboard and trotted down the stairs. I reached the pathway and jumped onto my skateboard, pushing off and following the path to school.

--------------------

I rolled up to the front of school and was greeted by some younger kids. I waved hello even though I had no idea who they were. I carried my skateboard under my arm and headed towards my locker. I leaned the skateboard against the lockers and entered my locker combination.

“Look who joined the dark side!” a familiar voice laughed.

“Only because you have cookies,” I smirked, taking Oscar’s biscuits. He was still teasing me about changing my view on skateboarding. His mouth dropped when I stuffed his cookie in my mouth.

He started to pout when I placed my skateboard in my locker and took out my books. Soon, Jax joined us at the tables outside. Oscar’s phone rang.

“Dude, your girlfriend is the cookie monster!” He laughed. I am guessing it was Colton on the other end.

“She’s not my girlfriend!” I heard Colton shriek.

“Sure she’s not. She is listening to the conversation. Why don’t you say hello?” Oscar smirked.

“Hey Nix, uhh sorry bout that…” he mumbled.

“It’s fine, we can chat later, I have to head to History. Bye boys!” I laughed, heading over to the stairs.

The final bell rang and all the students filed out of the classroom like ants. We all headed to our various lockers and grabbed out bags. I waited for Jax to finish so he could drop me at work. I waved hello to various people who called out to me. I guess being a senior made you popular. Not to mention, my fire coloured hair is pretty unforgettable.

Jax grabbed his bag and we walked out of school together. I slid into his car and turned the radio on.

“Argh. Taylor is so….” Jax began to complain. He was going to totter on about all the annoying kids in his class so I just shut off my ears. Basically just used the smile and nod technique.  I shushed him as my favourite song came on.

Jax pulled up in the car park and I hopped out.

“Thanks, see you later!” I smiled, shutting the passenger door. I strolled up to the shop and opened the door. I was welcomed by Rick.

“Phoenix! Nice to see you. I’m going to go now, have fun!” he smiled, walking out the door. I waved back and sat down at the counter. I wonder if his girlfriend said yes. Placing my skateboard on the floor, I turned on the computer and logged in. Looking around, I spotted a package near the door. Out of curiosity, I went over and picked it up. It was addressed to Rick. I left it on the counter and looked around the shop.

Everything was pretty much the same as last time. Except a few skateboards were gone, a set of wheels were missing and three sets of trucks were gone. We must’ve had some good sales over the past few days. I wonder how many other employees there are. Rick had sent an email yesterday saying pay day will be in three days.

The doorbell rang and I looked up to see a younger teenage boy. He looked about fourteen and had messy blonde hair.

“Can I help you?” I asked, returning to the counter.

“I need some new trucks…” the boy trailed off.

“Okay, just over here,” I guided, walking towards the truck cabinet. The boy looked a little distant, maybe distracted but I let him browse all the trucks by himself and tried to busy myself organising the counter.

“These ones,” he mumbled, placing a set of trucks on the counter. They were probably the cheapest set we had.

“Sure, they are $35,” I smiled, scanning them through the machine. He mumbled something else I didn’t quite catch and then placed a crumpled $50 note on the counter. I slipped it into the cash register and handed him is change.

“Have a good day!” I said encouragingly, although he never returned anything back. What a grouch.

I sat back down on the stool and fiddled on my phone until the next customer came in.

-----------------------------------------

“Good job, see you tomorrow?” Rick asked as we closed the door to the shop.

“Sure, how’s your girlfriend?” I asked cautiously.

“We are officially engaged!” he squealed. It sounded even cuter in his british accent.

“Awesome, see ya!” I waved, placing my skateboard on the ground. I set off on the pathway towards my apartment. The wind felt cold at my neck and I shoved my hands in my pockets to keep them warm.

I passed a dog chasing a few pigeons near the post office, a kid who was crying because he dropped his ice-cream and a lady walking barefooted wither her heels in her hands. Society can be interesting if you take the time to look.

I picked up my skateboard and trotted up the stairs. Unlocking the apartment with my keys, I found my mum on the couch, sipping tea with tears rolling down her flushed cheeks.

“Oh Mum…” I cooed, sitting her tea down on the side table and enveloping her in a hug. We held each other for well over ten minutes. I just stroked her hair as she weeped on my shoulder.

“I should be stronger. You are so strong Firebird!” My mum smiled sadly.

“No… I’m not. This… this sucks for me too mum!” I whimpered. I felt tears stinging at my eyes. The salty tears rolled down my face as I tried to wipe them away.

“Firebird, it’s okay. We will get through this,” she encouraged. I nodded but the tears kept coming. I was such a sook, yet it felt good to let it all out. I had been holding in my sadness for so long now that I felt as if the weight had been let off my shoulders.

I collected all the dishes from around the house and placed them in the sink. I then said goodnight to my mum and slipped into bed. I was very tired and fell to sleep in a matter of two minutes.

----------------------------------------

I walked into school feeling confident. Today was going to be great. I am going to pay attention in class, work hard at work and have fun with Colton afterschool. I strolled up to my locker and twisted the lock to the combination numbers. Pulling my locker open, I squealed as all my books, papers and folders came tumbling out of it.

“Far out!” I cursed, bending down to pick it all up. As I slotted then back into the locker, I felt someone grab another book off the ground.

“Need some help?” they asked.

“Colt!” I smiled, giving him a hug. He gladly returned it and gave me a kiss on the cheek.

“What are you doing here?” I asked, taking the book off him and placing it in my locker.

“Came to see you of course!” he chuckled.

“Really?”

“And…. I left my computer at Oscar’s so he is bringing it here…”

“There we go, how are you?”

“I’m good, you?”

“Just fine! Are we still going out this arvo?”

“You bet, here…” Colton said, taking my skateboard and slotting it into my locker. He then put my bag inside and I grabbed my books out before he closed it shut.

“Colton!” someone yelled out. I could see a tall blonde boy jogging towards us, Oscar.

“Hey bro!”

“Here’s your computer, hey Phe!” Oscar smiled.

“Sup? I will leave you two to it!” I said, giving Colton a kiss. I walked over to the water bubblers and took a sip.

“Is that your boyfriend?” a small red-head asked me.

“Uhh Colton? Yeah I guess… We are dating but we aren’t official or anything,” I blushed, looking over at him.

“Well you two sure seem cosy, he is super cute,” another blonde joined in. I left the younger girls to ogle over him and found Jax sitting in the corner with the science textbook open.

“Jax?” I asked, sitting down next to him.

“Shush. I am studying before my science exam. It's in like thirty minutes,” he mumbled, still reading over the pages. Shrugging, I opened up my novel and started to read.

------------------------------------

School had finished and I skateboarded to work. It was a long ride but I didn’t mind. I walked into the shop and found Rick sorting out some paper work.

“Hey Rick,” I waved. He nodded in response as I walked into the bathroom to change out of my school uniform. I put on some skinny jeans and a long-sleeve Stussy shirt. As I walked out of the bathroom, Rick waved me over to the counter.

“We had some new stock come in today and I need your help to sort it all out.”

“Okay, what do you need me to do?”

“These trick decks go in that corner, the wheels go up there, the trucks go in that cabinet and all these shirts and hats go over on those racks. I am going to look after the counter while you sort that out okay?”

“Sure.”

I dragged the box of trick decks over to the deck corner and sorted them out on the floor. Rick likes them to be arranged by brand and price. I had three piles, Zero, Santa Cruz and Plan B. I ordered them on the rack from most expensive to least expensive. When all the decks had been put up, I squashed the box down and put it out the back in the recycling pile.

Then Rick handed me a large box of wheels. I heard someone come in as I started to put the wheels in the cabinet.

“I am looking for some new wheels,” the customer said.

“Just ask Phoenix over there, she will help you,” Rick replied.

I kept sorting them in the glass cabinet until the customer approached me.

“Excuse me, could you help me?” the customer asked. Turns out, it was a older guy who I had met at the skatepark once or twice.

“Hey, Rudy right?” I smiled.

“Yep! Oh, you are Jax’s best friend, that’s right. I was looking for a new set of wheels for my cruiser board.”

“There are some cruiser wheels over here. Any specific colour or brand?” I asked.

“Red would be great,” he smiled, looking at all the wheels on display. I rummaged through the box and found a set of red wheels.

“Here you go!”

“Thanks, see you around.”

I continued to unpack all the wheels and set them up in order.

-----------------------------------

My shift was over and as I walked out the door, I heard a car honk. I spun around to see Colton in his car, grinning at me. Surprised to see him, I walked over to him and peered inside the window.

“Hop in!” he smiled.
