“I love you! From the moment I laid eyes on you it has only been you. Please, be with me.” said Kevin.

“Uh, thanks... But I really don't care for a relationship at the moment.'' Asana replied getting ready to walk away. She turned around and took a step. She didn't want to see his sad face, especially knowing she was the cause of his sadness.

“Before you leave,” he began in sterner voice, “Can I at least get the answer to why?”

Kevin wasn't a bad person. In fact, he seemed like an honorable guy. Teacher's favourite even. He wasn't the worst looking person either. He had soft brown eyes and similar coloured hair; accompanied with a soft smile which made one feel safe. But the problem was Asana didn't want a relationship. She believed that relationships would bind her down and she wouldn't reach her goals because of that.  Besides that, Asana had no feelings for the boy. Although, Kevin didn't seem to get that message.

“Because, I have someone I like.” Twitch. She had her back turned to him so Kevin didn't see her twitch.  She hurried back to class, worried if Kevin would she through her little white lie.

When she got back to class she could feel Kevin's eyes boring a hole in her back. She didn't turn around hoping that he would give up and go back to do whatever he normally does. She would have told him to mind his own business, but she was afraid that if he asked her about 'her love' then she wouldn't be able to give an answer without twitching. Asana was good at a handful of things but lying wasn't one of them. Whenever she would lie her face would twitch. She thought of herself as Pinocchio because of it, but it really didn't bother her much usually because of her blunt and nonchalant attitude.

“Hey, why is Kevin staring at you like that?” one of her friends asked. “I think he wants to talk to you.”

“Yeah, maybe.” she said and continue with her work. She realized Asana was hiding something but was nice enough to stay quite.

“Hey, can we talk?” someone asked. Asana looked up, and saw it was Enrique. She scowled. Enrique, to her, was rude and arrogant. He was tall, and thin. His black hair was always slicked back and he had a permanent smirk on his lips. He has been with her in the same class since elementary school. He was the cause of most of the bullying when Asana was younger. Needless to say, when she saw him; she wanted to burn him.

“What do you want, snake?” she asked with a scowl.

“Just to talk, darling.” he smiled wickedly. Asana looked at her friend; she was urging Asana to go. She begrudgingly got up and walked out with him.

“Get it over with. Hurry up.” she said monotonously.

“Be my girlfriend.”

“Not happening. If you need that, there are plenty of girls more than willing to fill that spot.” she said as she prepared to walk back. She thought he was probably doing this to find a new way to make fun of her, and she refused to let that happen.

“But I want you. I have liked you for quite a while now.” he answered. His cool guy facade slowly wearing down.

“Fine,” she said, “What do you like about me?”

“You're sexy and a complete badass.” he answers smiling coyly.

“And?”

“Isn't that enough?”

“No, it isn't.”

“Why not? Just be my girlfriend, please.”

“No.”

“But I like you.”

“ So? I have someone else I like.” Twitch. Thankfully, he is to full of himself and his wounded pride to notice her twitch. She walked away before he could ask any more questions.

Asana got back to her seat and sighed. She had to get back to her work but she couldn't concentrate. She kept clicking her pen in frustration.

“What is bothering you so much, Asana?” asked her friend. Asana looked up, stared at her for a little while as though contemplating whether to answer her or not. “You know you can tell me, right?”

“I know, Eva.” Asana smiles, “But I don't know if I want to talk about it or not.”

“Why don't you try and find out?” she asked.

“Uh, okay.” Asana slowly begins. “Well, Kevin sort of said he loved me. And then Enrique said he wanted me to be my boyfriend. And..”-

“And you don't know who to chose?” asked Eva giggling. Obviously, it amused her.

“Actually, no. I don't like either of them, let alone love them. It's just that they both don't understand no, and still want some sort of answer.”

“What did you tell them exactly?” she asked knowing Asana was always bad at social conduct.

“Eh... That I am in love with someone.” she answered.

“Didn't you twitch?” Eva asked.

“I did, but they were too into themselves to notice. Well, I was facing my back to Kevin. Otherwise he would have noticed, probably. But Enrique is an ass, he didn't.” Asana explained.

“Oh.” said Eva. “Well, I would help you but I have work to go to after school. I suggest you just pick one of them and get it over with. They aren't bad guys, you know. Maybe you can learn to love them.”

Asana snorted in reply. She knew that wouldn't happen. She bid Eva goodbye and stayed back to complete her work.

Kevin was pacing about the corridor thinking about how to get Asana to reply. He didn't want to believe Asana had someone she liked. She didn't seem like the type to fawn over boys. That's what he liked about her. He knew it was hypocritical, but he couldn't help it.

“Oi! Why are you walking around like that, Kev?” asked Enrique.

“Oh, I was wanted to find out who Asana was in love with.” he said, when he realized what slipped out he immediately stopped and looked at him waiting for an answer.

“You too, uh?” Enrique smirked. “Funny, I have liked that girl for such a long time, and the day I get the courage to admit it, she found someone else.”

Kevin just looked at him with his mouth open. Enrique seemed like the last person to like Asana. Then again, not everyone was as blaringly obvious as Kevin. And yet, not everyone was as ignorant as Asana.

“I want to know who this man is too.” said Enrique. “Want to help me?”

“I don't think Asana would like that very much.”

“She doesn't need to know.”

Kevin seemed concerned about his plan but his curiosity outweighed his gentleman spirit. “Okay, let's do this.”

Asana had just finished all her work. Usually people would do it at their home, but she preferred school. Home for her was just a place to sleep. She didn't really mind that though. She left school when the sun was setting and the sky was an orange hue.

On her way, she realized someone was following her. She didn't know how, she could just feel it. She quickened her pace. Go somewhere where there are people, she thought. She saw a Starbucks and thought it was the perfect place. She went in, and stood in the line. She checked her wallet, and she didn't have enough money for a decent drink. When she looked up, she realized that she was next in line. She freaked out. She should have walk out, but she was frozen still.

“Excuse me, miss. What would you like to order?” asked the cashier.

“Um...” Asana was stumped. She looked menu board and said the first thing that came in sight. “Hot chocolate.”

“And your name, miss?”

“Asa…na” she answered.

“That'll be 500 yen.”

“Here, you go.” someone else handed the cashier the money. Asana looked that them. It was a girl, who looked about her age. She was strikingly pretty, but the natural sort of pretty. She smiled at her.

“I thought you were having a problem and thought I would help you.” she said. Asana decided that she was an angel sent.

“Thank you so much, you saved me from a lot of embarrassment.” The girl started walking towards other counter. Asana sheepishly followed. She took her drink and they both sat down together.

“I am Mariska, by the way.”

“Asana.”

“So, did you really not have the money or did I just act like a total snob?” she asked.

“No. No! You aren't a snob. I don't have the money. I came in to avoid someone who might have been following me.” explained Asana.

“Oh, okay. Do you know who it is?” asked Mariska.

“Eh... No. But I could feel someone following me, I am sure of it. You can just feel such things, do you get what I am saying?”

“Yeah, I get it. I would help you if I could.” she thought for a while. “How about sit with me till your stalker gets tired and leaves? I like your company anyway.”

“Uh,” she contemplated for a while. “Okay. I hope I am not intruding though.”

“Two boys just walked in.” said Mariska suddenly. “They are in a uniform like yours. One has brown hair and the other has slicked back black hair. Are they the ones who might be following you?”

Asana's eyes went wide. It made sense now. They wanted to know who 'her love' was.

“Fuck.” she murmured.

“I am assuming that it is them then.” she chuckled.

“Um, yeah. I ,sort of, lied to them that I have someone I love and they probably search for that nonexistent person right now.”

“Oh, I see.” said Mariska. She had a smile on her face; she found it amusing whereas Asana found it horrifying. “Sorry for laughing. Is there any way I can help you out?”

Asana was an impulsive girl. She usually didn't give a second thought to her ideas.

“Yeah, could you manage to get their attention?” asked Asana.

“I don't think I need to. They saw you and are heading over here.”

“Perfect.” Asana purred as she got up and leaned over the table and kissed Mariska right on her lips. Mariska's eyes were wide, she was shocked. Too shocked to even retaliate.

“Are they gone?” Asana whispered.

“They look disappointed. But they are leaving.”

“Good.” she grinned and sat back down.

“I am not gay.” she Mariska sheepishly.

“Yeah. Nor am I. I just thought that was the easiest way to get rid of them.” explained Asana.

“I hug could have worked too.”

“I guess it would have. Sorry...?” Asana was still smiling though. She wasn't really apologetic. Mariska sighed. She smiled a little. Asana didn't seem like the sanest person, but she did seem fun. Although boundaries would be an order.

“You know what? I think we will become great friends.” she concluded.

2: Two
Two

Asana and Mariska continued to talk for a while. They realized they have more in common than they thought. For one, they both were the furthest thing from normal. Asana talked about her hopes and dreams, but mostly about art. Mariska told her about the time her parents weren't home and she spent her time singing and dancing around the house. They realized they were similar in so many ways, and yet so different. They were like two sides of the same coin. Time flew by quickly and the girls didn't realize that is was well into the night. The cafe was clearing out. They were the last people there.

“Shit,” they both said together. It made them both smile a bit.

“I had to be home before sun down,” said Asana. She grabbed her bag and got up, “Hopefully it's not too late and mum hasn't reached home yet. It's been fun talking to you, but I have to go now.”

“You're not the only one.” said Mariska. “I have to go too,” saying that she walked up to the door. She paused for a while before saying, “But before that, have you ever seen the sea during the night, it is a beautiful sight. I think you'll enjoy it, being an artist and all.”

“I would love to,” said Asana. “But my mother will return in around an hour and I have to reach home before she does or she will be worried.”

“Please,” said Mariska trying to use her best puppy dog eyes, “It's pretty much on the way to the subway. We won't spend long there, I promise.”

“Fine,” Asana sighed, “But we won't spend much time, okay?”

“Okay.” Mariska grinned.

It barely took 5 minutes for them to reach the beach. Asana passed this beach every morning but never gave it a second glance as it was always brimming with people and it seemed far from pretty.

“Here?” Asana asked skeptically.

“Yeah, here. I know it doesn't look very pretty in the morning, but night. The night has its own mysterious charm that brings beauty. Also the stars reflecting in the water make the sky look larger than it already is.”

Mariska realized she did not need to go on any longer because Asana was enchanted by the lovely, dark and deep sea. It seemed as though her eyes were sparkling as brightly as the stars above them.

“Wow,” she began. “How had I never noticed this before?”

“It is often hard to notice what is right in front of us.”

“Thanks for bringing me here. I think I found my new favourite place.” Asana grinned.

“No problem,” Mariska smiled.

The girls stayed like that for a while. The silence was calming, and Asana wanted to remain here, but she knew she couldn't.

“Well,” she said. “I think we should head back.”

“Yeah, alright.” Mariska turned around to head back when she bumped into someone. “Oh, sorry.”

Mariska looked up to see a man standing in a hoodie. Not much of him could be seen due to the darkness, but the moonlight was just enough to show the smirk he had on his face and light coloured hair on his head. Mariska backed up but it was useless because he held on to her not allowing her to move.

“Hey, Mister!” said Asana, “Leave her alone. She is with me.”

“Oh,” he smiled coyly, “Possessive, aren't we?”

“Humans aren't possessions,” Mariska growled trying to break free from him, failing miserably.

“Try anything,” he whispered in her ear, “And I will kill you; or maybe your friend over there.”

“What do you want?”She growled, she had stopped struggling but she still kept stiff, ready to attack if needed.

“I haven't decided yet, darling.”  He smiles. “What can you give me?”

“I have a pack of gum,” suggests Asana.

“Hm... That isn't a bad proposal. But how about you two pretty ladies come for a party that'll be held here on Sunday.” he said.

“And why would we do that?”  Asked Mariska.

“Free food...?”

Asana's ears perked up at the words. Maybe if Mariska wasn't being held by some mad man, she would have the same reaction.

“You know,” explained Mariska, “It is rude to invite someone without even introducing yourself. Not to mention holding your guest captive.”

“I'll leave you after this small little thing,”he said and took out her phone from her pocket. He messed around on her phone for a bit and handed it to her, released her from his hold. “You should really put a passcode on your phone. Anyway, I sent myself a message. You should save that number.”

“Under what name?” asked Mariska slowly walking away from him.

“The name's Flynn.” he said. “And what is yours fair lady?”

“Uh... Mariska.”

“Cute name, for a cute person.” he winked and walked away. He stopped a moment and turned to Asana, “I want that pack of gum.”

Asana begrudgingly gave him the pack. A scowl prominent on her face.

“'Don't be so angry,” he smirked, “You're invited too. If you tell me your name, that is. You can't leave your pretty little friend alone, can you?”

“Asana.”

“Okay.” he walked away, “Nice to meet you girls.” he said before he walked out of sight.

Asana and Mariska both looked at each other for a long moment. To say they were stunned would be an understatement. They looked blankly at the path he took and finally Mariska spoke, “Do you know him?”

“Nope,” replied Asana, “Do you?”

“Nope.” She replied.

“Do you think he is on drugs or something?” asked Asana.

“I don't know, maybe.” Mariska replied, “But I have a strong feeling this isn't going to be our last encounter.”

“You always attract the weird ones, don't you?” laughed Asana trying to ease the tension, “First me, then him.”

“Hehe,”  Mariska laughed as well, “Just my luck you know. Anway, let's head back. It's getting late.”

The girls walked towards the station quickly, refusing to stop anywhere lest they meet more strange people like him.

“Are you going to go for that?” asked Mariska.

“I have a strong feeling we don't really have a choice.”

“True.”

“You know what? I feel like that fellow, Flynn, I know him from somewhere.” confessed Asana.

“Yeah. Sure, Asana.”

3: Three
Three

Asana walked into school the next morning happier than she had been in a long time. She had met Mariska and knew that they would be great friends. They were practically two sides of the same coin. She wanted to greet Mariska good morning, so she took out her phone and realized she had forgotten to take her number.

Her bright and happy morning took a dark and gloomy turn. Her smile soon faded and morphed to anger.

“How could I have been so stupid?” she said kicking the wall near her. “Ouch.”

“What did you do this time?” said Eva, who had just come.

“I forgot to take her number.” cried Asana whist kicking the wall.

“Whose?” asked Eva. “Maybe I have it.”

“She isn't from this school.”

“Oh. Did you make any plans to meet her another time?” suggested Eva.

“Um, kind of...” replied Asana. She did have the plan of going to the creepy beach guy's 'event' with her, but the details would be sent to Mariska, not her. “Goddamnit!” exclaimed Asana as she kicked the wall and hurt herself. Again.

“That isn't going to help you.” Eva said dragging her friend away from the wall. “The wall didn't do anything. If you stop pestering the wall, maybe I'll treat you for lunch.”

That momentarily got Asana out of her daze and she gave a bright smile. “Aw, Eva-chan takes such good care for me.” she teased as she skipped around the corridor.

“Oh, did you know the school prince is holding a fancy masked ball this Sunday?” said Eva. “All the fangirls are dying to go for it. Sucking up to him any more than usual.”

“Oh.” said Asana, “Who is the school prince?”

“Do you live under a rock?”

“Only on Fridays.”  she grinned.

“He is one year our senior. Blonde hair. Evil looking.” explained Eva, “I think he goes by Flynn. Or Flynn-sama as his fangirls call him. I don't get why he is so popular?”

“He is propably one of those rich bastards.” then she paused for a moment as she realised, “Wait, Flynn? Are you sure that's his name?”

“Yeah,” said Eva, “There he is right now.” she said gesturing to a hoard of girls.

And she was right. Standing in the middle of all the girls was a tall, blonde guy. Asana wouldn't have recognized him if it wasn't for his brooding eyes. Looking at him made her blood boil, but she also realized that that 'rich bastard' was the ticket to Mariska. Without thinking twice she stomped over to him. Eva knew no good could come from this but also knew that it was impossible to stop Asana once she mind her mind to get something.

“Hey!”  shouted Asana. “Flynn, that's what you're called, right?”

She caught Flynn's attention. He looked at her with a bored expression. Asana couldn't comprehend how his fangirls could stand him.

“I want Mariska's number.” she demanded.

“Who is Mariska?” he feigned innocence.

“You know,” Asana said, “That girl who you held against her will; threaten to kill her and her friend, which was me; invited her for some shitty gathering, stole her phone number. Ring a bell? The thing is I need that phone number.”

“I don't know what you are talking about” replied Flynn, calmly.

Asana was now brimming with anger. Even more than before. She looked down and quietly murmured a dark aura forming around her, ''Seriously?''

“I didn't quite hear you, imp.” he replied dryly. His fangirls giggled at the nickname.

That's it, Asana thought. She punched him straight in the face. He fell to the ground. Asana looked him in the eye, with a glare that sent shivers down his spine, “This isn't over yet.”  And she walked off.

“What a bitch.” Eva heard one of the fangirls complain. “Is that her way of getting close to are Flynn-sama? How dare she.”

Flynn looked shocked for a moment. Horrified even. Then it changed to rage. He didn't say a word though, he just got up and walked to the opposite direction. Eva followed Asana.

“I am such an idiot,” Asana mumbled kicking her beloved wall.

“Yeah, you are.” said Eva who had just found her.

“I let anger get the best of me.” confessed Asana.

“Yeah, I saw.” said Eva. “And that was a stupid thing to do. Now those vapid fangirls are out for blood.”

“Really?” asked Asana slightly amused. “I don't think I made him bleed, or did I?”

“You didn't.” said Eva. “But you knock him to the ground. I think you're the first person to ever to that.”

“Are you fucking kidding me?”

“No, I wish I was.”

“Okay, I'll take your advice. But he is a sadistic bastard. So I make no promises.”

“You need to tell me what happened, now.” demanded Eva.

And so Asana started telling her the story of the previous night, and asked her to help her obtain Mariska's number.

“How about you steal his phone from his bag when he has gym?” suggested Eva.

“That sounds like a good plan but there are few problems, like my classes and he probably has a passcode on his phone.” explained Asana.

“Just skip class,” said Eva, “Not that you learn much by sleeping in class anyway. It is third period, if you were wondering.”

“Why do you know that?” Asana wondered aloud.

“42.”replied Eva, completely avoiding the question.

“Oh..kay, but what about the passcode problem?”

“He doesn't seem like someone who would keep a difficult one, try his birthday?”

“Which is?”

“9th August.”

“Alright, then.” Still skeptical on how she knew all his. “Third period, I shall sneak into the boys locker room and take his phone and acquire the number. Seems simple enough.”

The first two periods went by in a blink of an eye, and when the bell rang Asana got up to leave.

“Where are you going?” questioned the maths teacher as she entered the class.

“Um... Bathroom.” lied Asana. She quickly sat down so that the teacher wouldn't notice her twitch.

“Okay, go.” said the teacher, “Don't take too long or you'll miss out on today's lesson, it's important.”

“Yes, teacher.” Asana bolted up and practically ran out of the classroom. Her class mates were giggling at her foolishness, but that was a usually occurrence.

Asana quickly walked to the locker rooms. She waited behind a pillar till she couldn't hear anyone and figured the boys had left. She slowly walked in. Searching for Flynn's bag wasn't that hard, she just searched for the most expensive looking bag. She opened the bag and had the phone in her hand when she heard a girl's voice.

“You thief! How dare you steal Flynn-sama's phone?” it said.

“Um...” Asana didn't really know how to explain the situation to three of the Flynn-sama's fangirls in front of her.

“You are a real bitch.” said one of them. “You really think you can get close to OUR Flynn-sama?”

“I don't want to get close to him.” she said.

“You liar!” if they knew Asana even a bit they would know how wrong they were, but they didn't really seem to care. Before Asana could react, one of them came and slapped her while one took the phone out of her hand. The slap didn't really hurt Asana, but it did startle her. She tried snatching the phone from the girls but three against one wasn't a fair match. She back of for a bit, “How about we sort this out like civilized humans?” she suggested.

Just then someone entered the locker room. The girls handed Asana the phone so they wouldn't be caught. Asana turned her face so that the person wouldn't recognize her, but the other girls didn't seem to care to do that.

“And who are you?” one of them asked.

“Just a nobody.” he replied. “I came to give Flynn his phone. He took mine this morning.” Asana couldn't see him but she could hear his sweet fake smile in his voice. She hated it.

“Oh. Asana has it.”  they said, “We were just leaving anyway.” and they hurried out.

Great, Asana thought, now I have to deal this guy. She still didn't face his way. She held her phone to her back and said, “Your phone. Take it.”

Obviously, her luck wasn't good enough that he would just take it and leave. “Why aren't you facing me?” he asked.

“I'm shy.” Twitch.

“Oh, okay.” he didn't really seem to care. “Why did you want to steal Flynn's phone?”

“I needed her number.” she said.

“Don't you mean his?”  he questioned. She could hear him coming closer. His voice was smooth. Relaxing, even. She wanted to her more of it. Not that she would admit that to anyone.

“Um, no.” she said. “Flynn had taken the number of a friend of mine and I needed her number.”

“Yeah,”  he chuckled. “Sure, love.”

He took his phone and handed her Flynn's. “The passcode is 98XX. Incase you were wondering.” he whispered into her ear. It sent shivers down Asana's spine. He noticed and it made him chuckle. “Glad to see I have that effect on you.”

Asana could hear him leaving. “Um, what's your name?” asked Asana.

“I would tell you if you showed me your face.”  he said, trying to challenge her.

“Er... Nevermind.” said Asana.

“As you wish, love.”

Asana released her breathe, she didn't realize she was holding it. She hadn't even seen his face but it apparently didn't matter to her because her heart was still pattering like a machine gun. She tried to reel herself back to reality and it worked when she noticed the phone in her hand. It was the exact same model as mystery man's phone, but his was black and his was white. Flynn must be really stupid if he managed to take that one instead of this, Asana thought. The pass code he had given her turned out to be right and she quickly took down Mariska's number which was saved as 'Pretty Girl at the Beach Mariska'. Asana wondered what sort of weirdo this guy really was. She quickly kept back the phone and practically ran out of the boy’s locker room.

She messaged Mariska as she was getting out about how she wanted to meet soon to tell her how she acquired her number.

Then she begrudgingly entered the class room only to get shouted at my maths teacher for missing the whole lesson and skipping class.

“It's detention for you, young lady.” she said firmly.

“Yes, ma’am.” she replied. With the entire amount she used to sleep in class, wasn’t her first time. She really wasn't bothered with it.

4: Four
Four

The first thing Asana noticed when she entered the detention room was that Kevin was in charge of today's detention.

“How come you're here?” asked Asana out of curiosity.

“I am the Head of the Student Council,” he said proudly. “The teachers trust me and assign me duties often. And how come you're here?”

“Skipped class.” said Asana.

There was an awkwardness between them, for obvious reasons. She took a seat as far as possible from Kevin. To try and get rid of the awkward feeling she was having she decided to start sketching. She took out her sketchbook and pencil and started doodling away. After swiggling some random lines around the paper she realized she was having an art-block. She had no idea what to drawing. And it was frustrating. She was spinning her pencil in her hand trying to figure out what she could draw when she heard someone sit down next to her. She looked up and to her bad luck it was Flynn. Fan-fucking-tastic, she thought.

“Can't decide what to draw, huh?” he said. Asana looked at him but didn't reply. ''Why don't you draw a mask? You are coming for the masked ball on Sunday, aren't you?”

“I don't have any contact with her, in case you had forgotten.” she said.

“Tsk. My brother already told me.” he said, “You're coming. You don't have a choice.”

She groaned. She knew that she would end up going in the end. She wanted to spend time with Mariska. And she wasn't completely opposed to a party with good food. She didn't reply and started sketching. To her annoyance, she did like the idea of drawing a mask. And before she knew it her hand slipped and she drew a beautiful lady who had a deadly look in her eyes, and wore a feathery mask.

“My brother draws better than you,” said Flynn.

“Good to know.” Asana huffed.

Before she could react Flynn snatched Asana book and tore the page off. He handed the book back to her. Asana’s eyes first went wide and then changed to a glare.

“Do you think Mariska will like this design?” he asked.

“I guess. I don't know. Don't ask difficult questions.” she practically screamed. Why the hell did you tear it off? Are you keeping it?”

Kevin looked at her and said in a stern tone, “Miss Asana, have you forgotten that you are punished?”

“Sorry.” she tried to smile apologetically.

“Yeah,” whispered Flynn after a while. “I am taking it. She needs a mask for the masked ball. So do you, but you can figure that out on your own.”

Asana rolled her eyes. She didn't want to get caught again so she shut up. An hour passed and everyone shuffled to leave.

''I think she would like blue or purple,'' said Asana before walking away.

She checked her phone and Mariska had said to meet her at a nearby cafe at 5. She checked the clock to see that it was 5 minutes to 5. Now any normal person would just message that they are running late but Asana was far from normal. Instead she hurried out of school almost run.

''Hey,'' Eva said trying to stop her. ''Where are you going?''

''To meet Mariska, running late. Bye!'' and she continued off.

She reached 15 minutes late, which wasn't that bad. The funny thing was Mariska came in at the same time, ''Sorry, I was running late.'' she said.

''Hehe'', giggled Asana. ''Same. I just came.''

''Why are you still in your uniform?'' she asked. ''My school got over an hour back, and I assume yours did too.''

''It did. I got detention.'' she said sheepishly.

''Oh, why?''

''I punched Flynn in the face,'' said Asana. ''Oh, no. No. I skipped class, that's why.''

''Okay...'' said Mariska, ''Your day seems to have been much more interesting than mine. That's for sure.''

''I guess,'' said Asana taking a seat. ''Let's begin the story by saying Flynn goes to my school.''

''What?'' said Mariska, shocked. ''Seriously?''

''Yeah, serious.''

''He didn't mention that when we talked on the phone.''

Asana narrowed her eyes and stared at her friend, ''What now?''

''Uh, you see when he messaged me the details of the party, I called him back to find out who exactly he was.'' Mariska smiled sheepishly. ''And he told me. Some were very trivial like his favourite colour and first pet. He asked mine too, which at first I was a bit skeptical about but later realized he may not be that bad a guy...''

Asana's mouth hung open. To say she was speechless was an understatement. ''He didn't seem like that in school.'' she said and continued to tell her her story in school. ''So are we going for this masked ball thing?''

''Flynn told me it was a yearly event hosted by his father inviting company members and other important people. Flynn usually invites few of this school mates so he does die of boredom, but this time he has invited us.''

''You,'' Asana corrected. ''He has invited you. I am just tagging along.''

Mariska rolled her eyes. ''What were you saying about that guy you met in the locker room?''

''I didn't see his face.'' stated Asana. ''But from what I heard it was his brother.''

''Oh, yeah.'' said Mariska. ''Flynn mentioned that his brother recently started living with them. He is new in town, one year younger than him but acts more mature than him.''

''I am scared that you know so much,'' said Asana. ''How long did you guys exactly talk?''

Mariska didn't reply. She just started blushing.

''From your reaction,'' concluded Asana. ''I'll say a while.''

''Anyway,'' Mariska said trying to change the topic. ''What are we going to wear to the ball?''

''I didn't think of that,'' said Asana. ''I usually don't like shopping clothes.''

''Nor do I.''

They both sighed. Shopping seemed like so much work.

''Maybe it can be fun?'' said Asana.Twitch.

''Hehe, even you don't believe that.'' laughed Mariska.''How about we go into a shop and pick the first thing that catched our eye?''

''Sounds like a plan.''

Sound they both headed into the first shop that they found. It was a simple shop, without many people. The attandant looked bored out of her mind. She saw them enter but didn't bother coming to ask them what they were searching for. Asana was greatful for that.

''Oh,'' remember Asana. ''Try finding something blue and purple.''

''Why?''

''Flynn said he was going to get a mask made for you and I suggested it be blue and purple. You do like those colours, right?''

''Yeah,'' she smiled. ''You remembered.''

''I rarely remember stuff,'' she confessed. ''But colours are important to me.''

She nodded and went back to finding a dress. Asana looked around the shop. Nothing really stood out for her. Then she found an orange and red flowy dress. It reminded her of fire.

''Should I get this?'' she asked Mariska.

''Yeah,'' she said. ''It'll suit you. But I can't find anything for myself.''

''I'll help you.'' said Asana and began looking. She spotted a few blue dress on the rack but none of them caught her eye.

''Do you alway search for your clothes by just looking? Usually people try picking them up, trying them.''

''I decide my clothes mostly on colour. Though I rarely buy my own clothes though, my mom buys them for me.''

''Okay...'' she said, ''Found anything?''

Just as she said that Asana took out a striking blue and purple dress. It was short at the front and long trail at the back. Asana looked really proud of herself picking it out. ''Like it?''

''I love it.'' said Mariska taking the dress in her hands. ''It's so elegant.''

''Nice,'' she Asana. ''Let's try it, pay for it and leave. I want to try reaching home on time today.''

''Yeah, same.'' They did so and headed out.

''It was surprisingly fun.'' said Asana. ''And you're going to look so pretty!''

''So are you.'' said Mariska. ''I'm excited.''

''Why? 'Cause you get to meet your creepy prince charming?'' snickered Asana.

''He isn't creepy,'' Mariska defended him. ''And no. Because I get to go with you. It's always fun when we are together.''

''Yeah, that is there.''

''Also, I know you really want to meet that brother of his.'' teased Mariska.

''No,'' squeaked Asana. Twitch. Mariska saw that and she laughed all the way to the station.

5: Five
Five

Asana reached the location where Mariska had told her they would meet. She had been here for around 5 minutes and she was getting tired of waiting. Now normally 5 minutes wouldn't bother her, but in the pretty dress she was wearing she was catching people's eyes. Her dress barely covered her back, now she didn't have any problem with it but it was just getting her more looks from people.  She cursed herself for not bringing a jacket along. She was going to take out her phone to call Mariska when she heard her.

“Sorry” she said. “I got caught up searching for my shoes. How do I look?”

“You look gorgeous!” exclaimed Asana. “Though it was pretty annoying waiting, I forgive you.”

“Sorry,” she apologized again. “Thanks. You look beautiful, you know.”

“Yeah,” Asana laughed. “I know. So, where are we heading?”

“I don't know,” said Mariska. “Flynn said he would pick us up.”

“Oh, great.” said Asana in a monotonous voice. A few minutes later a very fancy car stopped in front of them. Asana and Mariska looked at each other and then at the car.

“Hi,” said Flynn from the car.

“Hello.” said Mariska. Asana didn't bother to greet him. They both got in the car, Mariska sat in the front and Asana at the back. She found two masks on the seat. One she recognized instantly, it was her design. Not one feather on it was out of place. It was magically blue colour with hints of purple in the side. Asana was mesmerized by it. Flynn saw Asana's face and smirked.

“Yes, imp.” he said in a mocking tone, “That is your design, I got it made for Mariska. Is it worthy of her?”

“Just barely,” replied Asana handing the mask to Mariska.

“Wow!” said Mariska, “You designed this, Asana?”

“Yeah, I did.” said Asana proudly. “Hope you like it.”

“Hey,” said Flynn. “I am the one who got it made.”

“Thank you, Flynn.” Mariska said sweetly.

“Imp,” said Flynn. “The other one is for you. I thought you should wear one.”

“I didn't wear one because I refused to listen to you.” She picked up the mask and admired it. Where Mariska's mask was beautiful in the elegant way, this one was beautiful in the most vicious way. It was black with tinges of red. It had jagged edge, which looked lethal enough to be a weapon. Unlike Mariska's which only covered the eyes, this one covered practically the whole face leaving just half the mouth visible. Just enough to show emotion.  Asana knew this was Flynn's way of telling her that she was only here because of Mariska. She already knew that, and honestly she didn't really mind.

“Yeah, whatever.”

The rest of the conversation was mostly Asana and Flynn bickering. Occasionally, Flynn would complement Mariska and she would blush. They would look at each other with those loving eyes and then Asana would tell them to stop. And the cycle would continue.

When they reached Flynn's house Asana and Mariska's jaws dropped. It didn't look like a house, more like a 7 star hotel. It was even bigger than a mansion. Flynn saw their reaction a smiled,  and seemed proud of himself.

“Shall we go, my fair lady?” said Flynn holding out his arm to Mariska. She took it and they started walking ahead.

“Wait,” she Mariska. “What about Asana?”

“Don't worry about me,” said Asana. “I'll go on my own. Have fun, okay?”

“Okay, alright.”

As much as Asana hated Flynn, she liked Mariska more and she looked happy. So she let her be with that spawn of Satan. She would just keep an eye on her from a distance. She put on her mask, which fit surprising well and walked ahead. She kept just enough distance between those two so that they weren't out of sight, but she wasn't too close either. When they reached the door of the mansion she was stopped by an employee, “Your name?”

“Asana.” The employee looked through his register and he found no one by the name Asana.

“I'm sorry, ma’am.” he said. “But your name is not on the list, did you come here with someone?”

“Yeah, I came with-“

“She's with me,” a voice said from behind her. Asana turned to see a tall man with dark hair. He was wearing the same mask as she was. His looked slightly broader. Asana simply nodded to the employee and followed that man.

“Thank you, sir.” Asana said. The man turned behind and glared at her.

“Where did you get that mask?” he said, by the tone of his voice it was evident that he was accusing her of something.

“Flynn gave it to me,” Asana said.

“Oh.” is all he said.

“If you want it back, you can have it.” said Asana.

“Um, no.” he said. “It looks good on you, keep it on.”

“Thanks,” said Asana smiling. “Can I ask you your name?”

“You can.” he said. “But I won't answer it. It is a masked ball after all.”

“Okay, then.” said Asana, “You're not get my name either. But what shall I call you?”

“Whatever you want, dear.” he said with a slight smile. “But how about you decide that after a dance with me?”

“Dance?” said Asana, scared. “I can't dance.”

“I don't care,” he stated. “My date was suppose to wear that, she didn't show. You're wearing that, so you are my date.” He extended this hand gesturing her to take it.

“That's some logic you got there; but alright, I'll dance with you. Though, don't tell me later how horrible I am at it.” she said as she took his hand.

The dance floor was practically empty. No one in the modern world cared, let alone knew, ball room dancing. Asana was no different.

“You look scared,” he commented.

“I have no idea what I am doing.” Asana confessed. It made him smile.

“There is only one rule to dancing,” he whispered in her ear holding her close, “pick a partner who knows what they’re doing.''

Asana looked him in the eyes. She was lost in them. Not in the way that she was in love and the eyes captured her love, but in the way that they were so mesmerizing. They were red, like the colour of blood. They weren't bright, and if she wasn't always searching for colours, she wouldn't have even noticed. They reminded her of garnets.  She wanted to draw them. She didn't really concentrate on dancing anymore, her partner was guiding her and she was just going with the flow.

“I am going to call you Garnet,” she stated.

“Oh, and why?”

“Your eyes,” she stated. “They remind me of garnets.” He seemed pleased hearing that.

“It's rare that people realize they're red,” he confessed. “They often mistake it for brown. But rarely do people actually care.”

“I like them, garnet.” she said.

“Thanks, love.”

“If we ever meet again, allow me to draw them.” she demanded.

“You draw?”

“Yeah,” she said. “I like to, I don't think I am any good though.”

“An artist should never underestimate themselves.” Garnet whispered in her ear. It sent shivers down her spine, it all seemed too familiar but Asana couldn't place a finger on it.

“Want to go have a drink?” he asked.

“Um, sure.” she replied and realized they were the only ones and the dance floor and the music had stopped. “But I really want to keep an eye out for Mariska. She is with an unknown guy and leaving her alone isn't in my best interest.”

“Is she with Flynn?” he asked.

“Yeah,” she answered.

“Then I assure you she is safe.”

“I don't know you either,” she argues.

“And yet here you are.” Asana was about to open her mouth to argue but Garnet place his finger on her lips and said, “If you're that worried we can look for them, but I am not leaving you nor am I letting you spend your time spying on your friend.”

“It's not spying,” she said taking his finger off her lips. She held his hand and allowed him to take her to get a drink. He handed her a flute but she was hesitant to take it.

“It's fruit wine, don't worry.” he assured her.

“Um, that's not why I am worried.” replied Asana. He understood and took a sip from the glass.

“Happy?”

“Delighted,” she said taking the flute. She took a sip. Her mind was screaming 'indirect kiss' and she wanted to tell her mind to shut up. She wasn't an annoying teenager. Oh, wait. She was.

“You look worried,” he commented.

“Oh, it’s nothing,” said she. “I really don't enjoy parties.”

“Oh, we are on the same boat then.” he said. “I designed these masks specifically for the reason to not get noticed.”

“I don't think they worked.” said Asana, “I know that people are still looking.”

“Yeah,” he sighed. “They are looking. You're just too radiant for people not to look. You make these dead masks look beautiful.”

“Thanks,” said Asana. “But these masks would be beautiful on anyone. They look vicious yet alluring.”

“Thank you.” Garnet chuckled. “Oh, by the way. Your friend and Flynn are there.”

Asana looked to see Flynn and Mariska happily smiling. Even if she didn't know them as a couple, she knew that she would be rooting for them. She might have hated Flynn, but that rich bastard did make Mariska happy.

“Do you want them to end up together?” he asked

“I will be happy with whatever Mariska chooses.” she answered avoiding the question best she could.

“They seem to be having a good time,” he said. “So why don't we leave and have some fun?”

“What is your plan?” asked Asana.

“You'll see.” he said as the winked.

Mariska took Flynn's arm and let him lead the way. She didn't want to leave Asana behind but she did say it was alright and it would have been rude deny him anyway. It would be almost as rude as holding her against her will and forcing her to come for this ball. She was really questioning herself about why she was here, with him at a social event. Honestly, she couldn’t pin point the answer.

She thought back to that night which began it all and let her mind wander.

Mariska had just got home from meeting Asana for the first time and she was casually wasting time on the internet when her phone beeped. It was an unknown number, she thought it was Asana but then realized that they hadn't exchanged numbers. Who she had given her number to was that creepy beach guy, Flynn. It was him.

The message read, ‘Heyy, its Flynn. On Sunday at ‘Le Lever Du Soleil’ mansion. If transport is a problem, I’ll pick you up.’

Mariska was going to reply by messaging him but then figure she should call him instead. He picked up the phone after a single ring.

“Hey,” he spoke. “I didn't expect you to call.”

“I am not coming for it,” she stated.

“Why?” he sounded almost heartbroken.

“Because I don't like parties and I don't even know you.” she said. “You're a complete stranger, and you might even be a serial killer. Your actions at the beach said at least as much about you.”

“I am not a serial killer or a criminal in anyway,” he said. “Unless being devilishly handsome is a crime, then I am guilty.”

“Oh, sure.” Mariska rolled her eyes. “Then explain your action at the beach.”  She wasn't going to have any of this bullshit he was spouting.

“'I saw you and I just knew I had to have you. Instinct took over.” he tried justifying.

“Right...” said Mariska skeptically. “I don't want anything to do with a guy whose instincts are no different than an animal.”  She was about to keep the phone when she heard Flynn profusely apologize.

“I'm sorry,” he said for the umpteenth time. “I am really sorry. Is there any way I can make it up to you?”

“Dye your hair pink?”Mariska suggested as a joke. “Or you know what? Just die.”

“Er... I don't mind the first one. I'll happily do it for you. But the second one is a bit too much, don't you think?”Asked Flynn.

“You're an idiot,” Mariska sighed. “And even if I do forgive you; you’re still a complete stranger.”

“Okay,” said Flynn. “Let's not be strangers then. I'll introduce myself first. Hi, I'm Flynn. I'm seventeen and my hobbies-“

“Just stop!” said Mariska. ''Even if I did think about wanting to get to know you, that is not the things I would want to know.”

“Okay, let's play a game of 20 questions then.” he suggested.

“Okay, then.” Mariska didn't understand why she agreed but she did.

“Why did you do that on the beach?” she asked.

“Straight for the big one, uh?” he teased.

“Just answer the question.”

“I saw you.” he said. “And I wanted to approach you, but then I got scared.”

“Scared?”

“I am extremely scared of meeting new people. But when I saw you at the beach I just had to get to know you.” he explained. “I am not usually as... Angry-“

“More like brooding, but go on.”

“It just happens to me when I meet new people. I'm sorry. I promise you I am not like that in reality. People usually think that though, but my family knows that isn’t true.”

“Okay, why me of all people?”

“It was my turn to ask a question.”  He reminded.

“Oh, right. Okay, ask.”

“What are your hobbies?”

“Reading, mostly.”  She said trying to be vague.

“Oh, I see. Mine too. Secretly at least.” he said. “So what type of books do you like?”

“Nope, it's my question.” she stated. “So, why me?”

“I don’t know. It was fate.” he said in a teasing tone. “Maybe destiny.”

“Oh, great.” She said sarcastically.

“What's your favourite colour?”  He asked changing the subject.

“Um, blue. Purple. I also like black, and sometimes green.” she said. “Sorry, I can't choose.”

“That's quite alright,” he chuckled. “Mine is pink, if you were wondering.”

“Obviously.” she said. She wanted to hate talking to him, but who was she fooling. He was interesting and fun. “Cats or dogs?”

“Animals. I like both. Though I do have a dog, I don't bard myself to just one.”

“Good answer,” she said. “I have two cats myself, Link and Ivy.”

“Cute,” he said. “I would love to meet them someday.”

“Next question.”

“Right.” he said, “I really don't know what question to ask, I'm not really good at all this… people stuff.”

“Yeah,” Mariska laughed. “I know what you mean.”

Their conversation continued on for a long while, 2 hours and 13 minutes to be exact. Mariska couldn't hate the guy even if she wanted to now. He may have come of rude at first but he was a complete marshmallow on the inside.

Maybe I should tell Asana about this, she thought. Oh, right. The number.

When Mariska heard Asana's story and her seeming hatred for Flynn, she was a bit disappointed. Asana didn't seem to mind their relationship, but she knew that she was trying her best to keep a happy face for her. No one likes third wheeling anyway.

“Is something bothering you?” asked Flynn.

“Yes, your hatred for Asana. And vice versa. You both are my friends, I don't want you two fighting.”

“She is the one who punched me.” he defended himself like a little kid.

“You provoked her!” said Mariska. “And the only reason I kept my mouth shut in the car was that I was hoping you'd get tired and stop fighting.”

“Didn't stop you from blushing though.” smirked Flynn.

“Not the point!” she said and smacked his shoulder. He just shamelessly laughed. She huffed and turned her head away from him.

“Okay, okay.” he said trying to stifle his laughter. “Sorry, but if you're seriously worried about Asana, look there. She seems like she is having fun.”

Mariska looked to see that he was right. Asana was dancing with some man wearing a mask similar to Asana's. If she hadn't seen her dress before hand, Mariska wouldn't have realized it was Asana. She was moving like an ember in the wind, her dress adding to the fiery effect. They were dancing so majestically that the other guests cleared the dance floor to give them space and see them dance. It was like a scene out of a movie. Mariska had a strong feeling that Asana hadn't realized how pretty she looked. As Asana's eyes were glued to this man's eyes.

“Who is the man?” asked Mariska.

“Ren.”  Said Flynn. He was frustrated from looking at them, he was try to hide it though.

“Does looking at Asana make your blood boil that much?” she accused him.

“No,” he said glaring at them. “It's that she is with my brother. That is the problem.”

“Oh,” she said. “But he doesn't look like you. Then again I am not very good at the whole face familiarity thing.”

“We are half brothers.” he shrugged. “But that isn't really important.”

“Okay, then.” she said. “They look beautiful.”

“Not as much as you.” he said. Don't blush, Mariska thought to herself.

“You're blushing again,” Flynn said, proud of himself.

“I am not,” she lied.

“Sure,” he said with a smirk. Mariska looked at Asana to see her and Ren talking about something. She realized that Asana probably doesn't know Ren's relationship with Flynn, or she wouldn't have been too comfortable with the close proximity between them.

“I don't think Ren has told her,” Flynn said.

“You spoke my mind,” she said trying to suppress a smile.

“That's because it's meant to be,” he said grinning like a fool. Mariska only rolled her eyes in reply. Though she had to admit that he looked really good when he made that face.

“You would suggest dancing, but I can't.” he said.

“Nor can I.” she replied. “Don't worry.” Mariska knew usually by now in any other conversation  there would be an air of awkward tension between them, but with Flynn it never happened.

“So, do you still consider us friends now?” asked Flynn hopefully.

Mariska stared at Flynn for a while. And finally said, “Yes.”

He smiled at her happily, “I'm glad.”

7: Seven
Seven

Asana let Garnet take her hand and lead her away from the people, but more importantly away from Mariska and Flynn. She had a worried look on her face was even recognized with that mask on.

"Have I ever done anything, love?" He asked Asana. He had a point. Asana couldn't even argue.

"No," she answered. Twitch.

"Why did you twitch?" asked Garnet.

"Um, it's nothing." Twitch.

"Sure." He said dropping the topic. They had reached the front of a massive door. The door was so huge, and ancient it made Asana's jaws drop in awe. The door was probably made of hard wood and had gold engraving all over it.

"Like it, uh?" He asked a proud smile evident in his face.

"Why does this exist in here?" she asked still not able to believe why.

"Family heirloom? I guess." He said.

"Oh," she said. "I guess Flynn's family is like royalty or something. No wonder I hate that rich bastard."

Garnet gave a weird look to her, Asana noticed that and tried to fix it by saying, "Not that you are, I mean maybe you're rich. But you aren't a bastard. You are actually a really nice person. At least from whatever little time we've spent together.  And I'm rambling."

"It's alright." He chuckled. "Rich bastards are the worst."

"Er... still. Sorry." She said.

"Nevermind." He said. "Let's go inside, shall we?"

Asana couldn't even say no because she was so intrigued by the door. They both pushed the door together.  The door was heavier than it looked and it looked very heavy. It took all of Asana's body strength to push it. Garnet managed it much more easily, but he probably knew what he was doing.

Entering in Asana saw the most amazing works of arts. They all were in the same style. Reds, maroons and black were prominent in the painting. Asana would say they were abstract but she couldn't exactly explain it as that either.  They were definitely faces but they weren't profound. But one thing she was sure for they depicted emotion. And they were beautiful.

"Wow." That was all Asana could muster up saying.

"What do you think of them?" He asked.

"Who made these?" She asked still awestruck by the deadly masterpieces surrounding her.

"Some rich bastard named Ren." He answered not really interested in the question.  "But seeing by your expression, you like them. That's good."

Asana simply smiled in replying staring at the artwork around here. She was taking it in as much as possible. This was a type of heaven for her. It was quiet. Secluded. Beautiful, yet mysterious and not pretty to everyone.

"Thank you." She said. "Uh, for bringing me here and all. Also dancing  with me." Asana was usually pretty crass and was really blunt with people, but with this man made Asana question her. He somehow made her want to prove herself.

"I hate parties, so this is usually my escape... actually it is always my escape." He said chuckling.

"I can see why." She said. "What I don't see is why you are showing me this."

"You seemed like someone who would appreciate this." He said.

"Were your masks inspired by Ren's work?" Asana asked.

"Um..." He suppressed a smile. "Something like that."

"Why are you smiling?" She asked suspiciously.

"Cause you're cute." he replied with a grin. Asana tired to hide her blush but failed. Asana was going to ask his name or number or something of that sort, but she heard her phone ring. It was Mariska, she was probably calling to ask where she was or maybe it was time to go. Asana didn't really want to pick it up at this very movie therefore she was a hesitant.

"Do you need to go?" He asked with a forced smile. "I have to go to, it's okay. If it's fate we will meet." He winked and turned to the door.

"But-" Asana tired to reach out for this hand but we began walking. "Stop! Garnet, please."

He did stop, he turned and looked at her. He looked pained to walk away. "Sorry."

Asana pulled the ribbon which was holding her mask on her face. She took off her mask and looked at him. "That's my face, if you were interested." She said awkwardly. He tried to suppress a smile but failed.

"You're too cute." He smiled. "And beautiful. But I am sorry, I can't show you who I am, but keep the mask as a memento. And your phone is ringing."

Asana looked down to see Mariska calling again. She was probably worried now.  She looked up and saw Garnet was gone. She sigh and picked up her phone.

"Hello," she answered trying not to allow any emotion in her voice.

"Hey, where are you?" She asked a worried tone in her voice.

"I am fine. Tell me where you are, I come meet you."

"What happened to you?" She asked.

"Nothing." She said walking out of the room. "Where are you?"

"Oh, yeah." He said. "I am near the entrance. Flynn needed to leave to meet his father and he said I should go home."

"So he just left you?"

"Um, yeah. So?"

"He shouldn't have done that."

"Sure." Mariska just agreed knowing that between Asana and Flynn the feud would last for a while.
