Light Show

~Be Dillon~

It was just before dusk when the couple approached the end of the field. The both of you settled down a distance from the water's edge, gazing out from the thinning mist at the bay and further on, the sea. It was only around 7PM, but due to the thick, thundering clouds, it already appeared to be nighttime.

The grass itself was a stunning dark jade, matching the green in Dong-Hye's hazel eyes beautifully. His long dark hair framed his face in a way that brought out the dark brown i-

"You're thinking poetic things about me right now, aren't you?" The shorter man deadpanned, but allowed a faint smirk on his face when your eyes met, somehow giving your thoughts away.

"Maybe." You said over the roaring thunder, your smile growing. "Wanna hear 'em?"

"Maybe." He replied as lightning flashed high over his features for a second. "When the show starts, how about?"

You nodded, looking out into the distance. The clouds had begun thundering and flashing when you entered the field minutes before. The show will start any second now.

The first link between heaven and sea surprised you as it met with the metal poles that jutted out of the sea, a flicker of pinkish light across your vision. Another, bluer one appeared, followed by more of varying colours, lighting up the sky with shades of yellows, blues, and reds. Your elven years picked up gasps and awes from other groups who came to see the light show, one couple being an unknown distance away to your left, most likely sitting by the edge of the water just like you and your boyfriend.

You couldn't help but steal a glance at Dong-Hye, watching the lightning tint his form, defining his cheekbones and robe. You've wondered what his tails would look like in the lighting on these nights, but know it wouldn't be wise to risk it. Even today, Interspecies Romance is a subject people have tip-toed around at the best of times. Neither of you should take chances, in case someone were to see.

Of course, being one of the wealthier families in the area only weighed the burden on your shoulders. But that was fine, because Dong-Hye was in the exact same situation, perhaps even deeper than you. That, however, has only made you want to be closer, to help carry his. He's not just your boyfriend and future business partner; he's your best friend. Your pillar of wisdom.

You don't know how long you've been staring, but eventually he turned and locked eyes with you. You took this moment to lean in closer to him.

"I just remembered." You whispered. "I haven't told you my 'poetic thoughts'."

"That's right." He breathed and gave you a toothy smile, something he showed only to those close to him. You've seen it plenty of times and couldn't help the heat and twitching of your ears. "Let's hear them."

You gotta say, not bad for your first year anniversary.

The fields of Ireland were so different from the hills of Korea. The grass is soft like a cushion when you sit down with Dillon, the bugs gratefully keeping their distance. You thought of lying down until the lightning show started, but remember the small pond that lay right behind you.

You turned you head to see him staring at you, staring in the same way he did when he was reading his prose. And you certainly don't mind letting him know that, agreeing to hear them later on, when the light show starts.

You didn't have to wait long, for in a few minutes the first long clip of light shot out from the horizon that night. It was soon followed by several others, varying between warm and cool shades of the rainbow. The landscape itself was breathtaking enough already. This however, made the moment absolutely…

"…Sublime..." You barely heard yourself whisper above the thunder, and it took you a second to realize you two were touching shoulders. A part of you wished that you could change into your full Kumiho form, but you don't want to risk anyone knowing about your little 'special business meeting' with your Elven boyfriend and businessman. That would only get all nine of your tails sent straight back home and the merge deal between yours and his parents' possibly canceled.

You can't help but sigh at the thought of going back to Korea and never to see lightning in this way ever again. It's efficient, the metal poles collecting energy for clean power during storms, while giving creatures a reason to come out and enjoy nature with their family.

Leaning on his shoulder, you glanced to Dillon for a nanosecond. You were able to hide your fox years earlier because of the thunder, but Dillon seemed to never mind noises, despite his longer elf ears.

Several strands of bright yellow lightning flashed at once, each one crinkly and curly, like Dillon's long, dirty blond hair. Some light blue danced around, reminding you of his blue eyes, always open and honest with you, opposite from the cold eyes of the usual business creature. It was what made him stay in your thoughts when you first arrived, later on the motivation to form a closer relationship with him.

He was so much more than just your future business associate; he's your boyfriend, your ray of light. The one creature in the world you knew you could always trust.

You look back over to see him staring at you, but it was a comfortable one, a Dillon one. He leans close to you, and you to him.

"I just remembered." He whispered. "I haven't told you my 'poetic thoughts'."

"That's right." You breathe back, your lips opening to reveal your teeth, a childish smile that you never showed to many people, getting wider when you noticed his ears had begun twitching and reddening. "Let's hear them."

You must say, pretty good for your first year anniversary.

My first attempt at a Romance! Yes, it could be better. I'm not very interested in romance, but I thought it was worth trying out.

If it's not very clear, Dillon is the Elf and Dong-Hye is the Kumiho. I know that Kumihos are usually female in Korean folklore, but hey, this is fiction!

In a world were MOGAI is accepted, but Inter-species Romance is a thing for the closet!

That was not supposed to make sense.

Critiques are appreciated. -Monos DOA
