“And they all lived happily ever after.” Mum finished off closing the book. Kissing us on the forehead before she walked to the door and offed the lights, whispering “Goodnight.” Then closing it shut.

Surrounded by darkness I turned to the person next to me. My sister, my identical twin,

“Hey Cassy. Are you still up?”

“Yeah.” Came an identical voice but a bit softer.

“I like that story. A prince who saved a princess in trouble. Don’t you think it’s nice?”

“I don’t know. Don’t you think it’s different in real life though?”

“Yeah true…”

There was a slight pause before I broke it.

“Hey Cassy?”

“Hmm?”

“Do you believe in destiny?”

“No.”

“Really?”

“Yes. Good night Callie.”

I sighed. “Good night Cassy.” I closed my eyes and soon drifted off into a deep, sleepless slumber.

“We’re going to a beach, to a beach, to a beach, to a beach!” I sang while I danced around our room in random circles. I heard a giggle and turned to see Cassy sitting on the bed with a hand over her mouth trying to contain her laughter.

Laughing out loud myself, I pulled her off the bed and spun in circles with her while continuing my made up “beach” song.

“Girls! It’s time to go!” Dad said poking his head into our room.

“Woohoo!” We cheered jumping up and punching the air above us.

I ran downstairs and into the car with Cassy right next to me the whole time and I managed to get her to sing my beach song with me on the way to the beach.

“We’re going to a beach, to a beach, to a beach, yay!”

Before long, Cassy and I were having a water fight in the salty, crystal blue ocean. The day was perfect. The shining sun in the sky made the waters look glittery and sparkly and it wasn’t very hot either. Cassy and I did everything we could think of. Go swimming, water fights, sand castles, digging up holes, collecting shells and other pretty things we can find, burying a part of our bodies and then digging it up again. We also got our parents to play volleyball with us. Cassy and I kept falling on our faces but it was so much fun that we didn’t stop.

Soon, it was time for us to go home. Cassy and I sat on the sand, close enough to the ocean for the water to reach our toes. The sun was setting and the sky was filled with different shades of orange, yellow, blue and purple. The rays from the sun reflected off the waves of the ocean, retaining the sparkly look it had all day.

“This looks so magical.” I say.

“Yeah. It was a lot of fun today.” Cassy replied.

“Yeah…”

“I hope we can come back again sometime soon.” We say at the same time. We looked at each other and giggled, “Jinx!” and laughed harder.

“Now what are you little ladies laughing about?” We turned around and saw Mum crouching down beside us.

“Mummy we just said the same thing at the same time!” We said together again. We looked at each other and burst out laughing again. Even Mum laughed a bit.

“Well it’s time to go. We’re going to stop at a restaurant for dinner first though. Where do you want to go?” Mum said lifting us up to a standing position.

“Crystal Palace!” came our united voice.

“Okay! Buckle your seatbelts girls and off we go!” Dad said starting up the car as cheers filled the car.

The drive there was pretty short but the sun had gone down fully when we arrived. We went to our usual table next to the window with the few of the restaurant’s garden. The restaurant itself was styled like an ancient castle. The food served included food from all sorts of cultures so it had a huge variety. Our favorites are the Thai Fried Chicken, Barbeque Steak and Chocolate Mousse. So of course, we ordered those!

“Mummy can we get more chocolate mousse?” I ask.

“No more sweetie. Too much and you’ll be tearing the house down” She replied.

“And too much is not good for you Callie.” Cassy said trying to sound grown up. Oh please, she’s only older than me by 1 minute.

“Come on, don’t pretend you don’t want more too.” I say poking her. She didn’t reply. Instead she looked down then looked at Mum with pleading eyes.

“Listen to your mum girls. No more chocolate for the two of you tonight.” Dad piped in.

“Awww!” I whined. Cassy just sighed and nodded.

After we finished eating, Dad put some money in a black thing and then we left. On the way home I got a little sleepy and it seems like Cassy got sleepy too as we slumped on each other dozing off.

But we were awaken by loud honks and then the whole car shook as another one crashed into ours from the front.

“Girls are you okay?” Dad asked looking at us. We were both on the edge of tears but we nodded. I looked over at Cassy and saw her looking at the front at the place where another car collided with ours. I then saw another car skidding towards us, aiming for her side of the car.

“Cassandra!” I shouted pointed outside at the skidding car. Tears freely flowing down my face now.

Cassy looked at me and started crying as well. She pointed behind me as well and yelled “Calliana!”

Then the car shook again as two cars came into contact with ours on both sides of the car. I heard glass shatter and the last thing I heard was the sound of sirens before everything went black.

Calliana

“Yes she can be discharged in a few days.”

“How old is she again?”

“She is 6 years old. Her birthday is on the 8th of December. Will you be adopting her?”

“Yes we will. Poor girl, only 6 and lost her family.”

“Actually she –”

“Oh look I think she’s waking up!”

I slowly opened my eyes to see 3 strangers. One wearing a white coat, most likely a doctor. That means I’m at a hospital. But what for? The other two were a man and a lady. The lady sat down on the bed next to me.

“Hello sweetie, what’s your name?” She asked quietly.

I looked up at her in wonder. What is my name? Ca… Call… Callie? No… Calliana. That’s my name.

“Calliana.”

Suddenly, another name popped into my head. Cassandra. Who’s Cassandra?

“Okay Calliana, I am your mum. That guy over there is your dad.” The lady said pointing at the man.

Slowly, I nodded my head, making me realize how bad my head hurts. Wincing, I moved a hand to cradle my head but realizing my entire body was aching as well. The doctor walked over and pressed a few buttons and the bed changed into a chair-like position. I released my head and hoped the pain would go away soon.

“Calliana, do you remember what happened?” The doctor asked.

I looked at him blankly and tried my best to remember, but all I got was an even more painful headache. Looking down, I shook my head slightly trying not to make it hurt even more.

“Oh poor girl. Don’t worry we will take good care of you. Okay?” The lady, who is apparently my mum, said hugging me.

“Yes, you will be fine.” The man, my dad, said sitting down next to me as well.

“Well then, Calliana, you should get some more sleep. Mr. and Mrs. Kellen, please follow me to get some paperwork signed.” The doctor said, changing the bed back into its original position then leading my parents out the door.

I closed my eyes and listened to the beeping of the machine next to me, gradually putting me to sleep.

When I woke up again, I was no longer in a hospital. Instead I was in a rather large room with a window on my right that takes up a whole wall but was currently covered with chocolate brown curtains. There was a white dressing table, a small part of a wall was a book shelf with a pink bean bag next to it. On the wall to my left was covered by a wardrobe that was white with green details.

I sat up slowly realizing that my body was still sore. The bed I was sleeping on is humongous! I had like a billion pillows that varied between white, different colours of pink and yellow and my bed and blanket was really soft and was white with blue patterns.

I crawled over to the edge of the bed and slid off, realizing my entire floor was a really soft, rich brown carpet. I saw a white door next to my bed and slowly made my way to it and opened it. Inside was a bathroom with a bath tub and a shower, a toilet seat and a sink with loads of cupboards. I closed the door and made my way towards to the other door at the opposite end of the room which lead outside.

I made my way down the hall and down a spiral staircase. I walked towards a window and saw a separate house. I walked over to it and poked my head inside. There I saw that it was a gym. But it had weapons in it too. Guns, swords, knives, and many more. There was a person at the punching bag and saw that it was Mum. I walked into the room and I think she heard me because she turned around immediately.

When she saw me, her expression softened and she walked towards me and crouched down to my level. “Sweetie you should be in bed, you’re not fully healed yet. Come on, let’s go back to your room.” She said taking my hand and leading me back to the main house.

“Can you teach me? I want to learn everything in there.” I say, pointing back at the gym.

She seemed shock at my question. It clearly showed on her face. Then, she smiled and nodded. “Of course. But you need to heal fully first okay?”

“Okay.”

We were back in my room and Mum tucked me in. She kissed my forehead and said “Sweet dreams.” Before walking out and closing the door.

A wave of déjà vu washed in. Except something was missing but I don’t know what. Deep down, I know something is missing. A part of me was missing but I just can’t remember what. I just remember one thing.

“Do you believe in destiny?” I whispered to no one before floating back into sleep.

“Oh lookie she’s waking up!”

“Calm down Jack. We have eyes. We can see that.”

“Izzie is a meanie.”

I finally opened my eyes and saw 3 pairs of eyes staring back down at me. As I made the move to sit up, the three people moved out of my way. The three consisted of a girl, probably a few years older than me, with messy brown hair and brown eyes, who was carrying a little boy with the same features. The two were probably siblings.

Siblings. Do I have any? How come I can’t remember anything?

I looked to my right and saw a boy who was most likely a little older than me as well. He had black hair and blue eyes. “Where am I?” I found my voice asking.

“You’re at an orphanage.” The boy replied simply.

“I’m guessing you don’t remember anything that has happened?” The girl said raising an eyebrow. I nodded slowly. “Okay, but before I tell you what I know… which isn’t much. Just some medical stuff or something along those lines. Anyways before I tell you, let’s introduce ourselves!” She said enthusiastically. “I’m Isabella. I’m twelve!” Pointing at herself.

“And this is my little brother.”

“I’m Jack and I’m 3!” The little boy in Isabella’s arm said giving me a toothy grin while holding up three fingers to show his age.

“And I’m Ethan. Eight years old.” The older boy said quietly. I get the feeling he is a quiet one most of the time.

“Now what about you?” Isabella asked.

I stared at her for a while, racking my brain for a name.

“Cassandra.” I heard my voice speak.

“Okay Cassandra, this is what I know. Apparently you and your family were heading home from dinner or something when you guys got into a car crash. Three cars crashed with yours… yikes that’s a lot. Anyways your parents died and you got a slight concussion. You’ve been sleeping for… I think… around… um…”

“One week.” Ethan finished.

“Oh yes one week. Um… you’re six years old and your birthday is on the 8th of December. And that’s all I know. I know all this because my family owns this orphanage. I’m not an orphan but I like making new friends and playing with new people.”

I nodded. I tried standing up and with little difficulty, I managed to stay standing without falling back onto the bed. But trying to walk was a completely different matter. I took one step. One step!! And I almost fell over! Thankfully, Ethan caught me before I fell. He helped me to sit on my bed, took one look at Isabella and then left.

I looked at Isabella confused. She noticed my confusion “He’ll be right back. He’s been here for a long time and he is really quiet. But it is really easy to learn his expressions.”

I nodded before I found myself asking, “What happened?”

Isabella’s eyes darkened. “His family was murdered.” I felt my eyes widen in response. “He was 4 years old when he came here. Apparently he had a little sister. She was murdered along with his parents.” I gasped. Isabella looked like she was about to say something else when Ethan walked back in carrying a tray. He walked over than set the tray down on my lap. On it was a bowl of rice with some vegetables, a bowl of soup, a loaf of bread and a glass of water.

He went back to his original space before he left and looked at me. “Eat up.”

Giving a small smile, “Thanks.”

I hadn’t realized how hungry I was and how thirsty I was until I had my first bite and my first sip. I gobbled the rest down, probably looking like a monster while I did that but no one said anything. I supposed that it was a common occurrence for new people in the orphanage. While I was stuffing the food into my mouth, I saw Jack staring on the loaf of bread. Seeing that, I broke of a rather large piece and handed it to him. Squealing with glee, he began to eat as well with Isabella setting him down on my bed while chuckling and shaking her head.

After I had finished my mini feast, Ethan took the tray back downstairs. Isabella turned to me, “He really cares for you, you know?”

Again, I stared at her in confusion. She shrugged, “Maybe because you remind him of his little sister. His little sister was 2 years younger than him. Anyways, you should get some more sleep and gain back more of your strength. You’ll meet the rest of the orphans tomorrow.”

I nodded and slid back down. Jack, who was still sitting on my bed, crawled up to me and planted a wet kiss on my cheek with sound effects, causing me to giggle. Isabella laughed full-heartedly before picking Jack up. “Good night Cassandra!” She said before walking out the door.

When the door closed, I turned to my side. Something was missing. I just know it. Soon enough, I fell asleep wondering who that mysterious but familiar name belonged to.

Calliana. Just who are you?

Cassandra

Cassandra

It’s been a year since I came to the orphanage. My life cannot be more awful than it already is. Apparently I’m the first kid to come to the orphanage with amnesia and all the others are being mean to me just because of it. Day by day, always calling me by “Amnesia” and not my real name. Always making me seem inferior just because I don’t have memories of my past. Ugh they’re so annoying! I yelled in my mind bringing the axe down to the wood block on the tree stump, making it snap in half.

“Having fun there?”

I stopped my merciless chopping to turn around and saw Ethan leaning against a tree with arms crossed and eyebrows raised, looking at the piece of wood I had just broken in half. I looked back at the tree stump and put another wood block on it while casually shrugging. Ethan, Isabella and Jack were the only people who actually treated me well.

“What are you doing here? I thought you were helping Isabella look after Jack.”

Ethan shrugged one shoulder. “Isabella and I wanted to make sure that you weren’t doing anything unnecessary.” Pointing at the axe. “Like committing suicide or something.”

I rolled my eyes. “Now why would I want to do that?” I said sarcastically before chopping the piece of wood in half.

“That’s the last one. Help me carry them back.” I told Ethan while starting to pick up half of the wood blocks that I have chopped up, leaving the other half for Ethan. Once he picked up his half, we walked back to the orphanage together. We went into the kitchen and dumped them into the pile of firewood before heading back to the living room.

“Where’s Isabella and Jack?” I asked looking around.

“Over here!” Came Isabella’s voice but she was nowhere to be seen.

“Um… Isabella?” I asked again and a hand shot up from in front of the couch. Ethan and I rush over there to see Isabella half buried by Jack’s toys and Jack sitting… more like lying down on top of the pile.

Isabella looked at me with pleading eyes and mouthed “Help me!”

Unable to hold back the laughter, I burst out laughing. Ethan was chuckling but lifted Jack off the pile and I managed to find one of Isabella’s hands and pulled her out.

“Yes! I can breathe freely again!” Isabella gasped out punching the air with both her arms. I giggled again.

Footsteps were heard coming down the stairs. It was two of the other kids. “Hey, what’s going… oh hey there Amnesia. I should have known that was you. With all that racket.” Said one of them.

The other one sneered at me. “Did you think that making so much noise would help you regain your memories just so you can fit in here? My my, you’re even more foolish than I thought.” The two started to cackle like the evil beings they are. At least to me.

I felt my anger building up in my and before I could lash out and do something I may regret later, I turned around and heard footsteps retreating back upstairs. I turned to Ethan and Isabella and saw that they were still glaring at the stairs where the two have gone. Even Jack was wearing a pretty angry glare for a four year old.

I mentally sighed. I am seriously getting tired of this. I think I’ll tell them of my plans now. I mentally nodded. “Hey guys.” I say catching their attention. “I’m gonna run away from here.”

It was silent. Even Jack was silent. After a while I started talking again. “I’m getting tired of all this teasing and bullying. So I’m gonna run away and escape it. I know I can’t do anything about it even if I wanted to. And I really want to find out who Calliana is.”

I had told them about how the only thing I remember is the name Calliana. They think that Calliana may be someone important in my life. Isabella and Ethan continued to scan my face to make sure I was serious. Isabella sighed. “Are you sure about this?”

I nodded firmly. Isabella sighed again. “I’ll help you with it. I’ll sneak out some necessities so you can bring them with you.”

I smiled brightly. “And I’m coming with you.” Ethan said. I turned to him in shock. “No talking me out of it. I’m going.” He said, emphasizing going. I sighed knowing that nothing anybody said would change his mind.

Isabella turned towards the kitchen. “Anyways it’s dinner time. Eat as much as you can. Meet me down here an hour after curfew and I’ll give you the supplies.”

I smiled widely again. “Thanks Izzie! We’ll help set the table.”

“Thanks!” Isabella shouted as she headed into the kitchen.

Ethan and I managed to set up the table quickly and went to help Isabella carry the plates and bowls of food onto the table. Then Isabella’s mum came and called all the kids down for dinner. Dinner was like normal. All the kids talking to their friends and I managed to get away with only a few name callings.

After I just went up to my room and just laid in bed. Adrenaline rushing through me thinking about what I might encounter on my ‘adventure’.

An hour after curfew, which is basically at 10 pm, I met up with Isabella, Ethan and Jack downstairs by the door. I hugged Jack first as he was already falling asleep. “Bye Jack.” I whispered and then giving a soft peck on his cheek.

Isabella placed Jack on the couch and gave me a bear hug. “Come back and visit some time kay?” She whispered by my ear.

“I definitely will.”

Ethan briefly hugged Isabella as well and gently tousled Jack’s hair. He opened the door and I gave one last wave before the two of us set out into the dark.

The night was fairly dark but the moon was full and it was clear so the moon was bright enough to show the pathways and lead us around. The air was not so cold but it still sent shivers down my back.

Ethan and I walked slowly, taking our time to observe the city at night. We saw a little shop that was still open and decided to get some ice cream. Isabella had given us some money so I bought a chocolate chip ice cream cup and Ethan bought a minty chocolate ice cream cup. We paid and walked out of the shop eating the ice cream.

Suddenly, I felt the hair on my neck stand up and I slowed down my walking. “Hey Ethan?”

Ethan had slowed down as well and looked at me. Lifting up one figure to his lips, signaling for me to quiet down. The two of us just stopped walking completely. In the next second, eight shadowy figures circled us trapping us in. One of them raised something up and some light reflected off it so I assumed that it was a knife of some sort. I looked around the circle. Every single one of them had one.

Adrenaline pulsed through my body and I felt Ethan tense up beside me. One of the eight, presumably the leader, smiled showing off unruly yellow teeth. “Get them.” He said in a deep cackling voice.

At that command, all eight rushed forward with their knives at the ready. Then, my body seemed to move by itself as I punched one of them square in the face and then flipping him over, making him lose his knife. The next one came up on my left and swung his knife at my head. I ducked and tripped him over with leg. As he fell over, I jumped back up into the air and round house kicked another man who approached me from the right. When I was back on the ground, I kicked him again on his side, making him go flying into the second guy I fought.

I felt my hair being yanked back, making me fall on my back, knocking all the air out of me. The same person yanked me back up by my hair and threw me into the wall. I let out a yelp of pain. I looked around and saw that six people were down. Ethan and I had taken out three people each. I managed to find Ethan in the dark and saw him being held against the tree by a man who was choking him. I tried to stand to go and help him but a wave of pain washed over my leg, restraining me from standing up. A glint appeared by my neck and I felt a cool metal blade against my skin. The man who threw me into the wall is now beside me and holding his knife against my neck.

Before his knife could go any deeper into my skin, two other men appeared. My vision started to go black. The last thing I saw was one of them pushing the man away from Ethan and another punching the man away from me. I heard a faint “Are you okay?” before my vision went black completely.

When I woke up. I was in an unfamiliar place. I slowly sat up and looked around. There were several beds in against both walls. They all had white bedding and a little curtain divider between them. Each also had a small table beside them. The bed across from mine had a body in it. I squinted to try and get a better look. It was Ethan. Now fully awake, I pushed away the blanket and swung my legs over to stand up. As soon as I stood up, pain shot up my leg again, reminding me of last night’s events.

“Go easy on your foot. You sprained it last night.” Came a feminine voice behind me. I looked back and saw a girl who looked like she was in her teenage years. She had beautiful blonde curls that cascaded down her back. She had stormy grey eyes and pale peach skin.

“I’m Jasmine.” She said stretching out a hand waiting for me to shake hands with her. I lifted my own arm slowly and clasped my hand with hers. “What about you?”

I blinked twice before I managed to reply. “I’m Cassandra.”

Jasmine smiled. “Nice to meet you Cassandra. Come on, I’ll change the bandages and we’ll go meet some other people kay?” She sat me back down and unraveled the bandages on my foot and rewrapped them with new ones. “Don’t worry about your friend. Another person is taking care of him and when he wakes up he’ll join you.” I nodded.

“There we go. Try not to put too much pressure on that foot and… Do you want to use crutches?”

I shook my head. I can limp around. No biggie. “Thought so. Okay let’s go.” Jasmine grabbed my hand and we slowly made our way outside.

“That was our sick bay. This place we are at now is like a little camp site but all of us live here. We are people who were abandoned or people who ran away. Which category do you fall in?” Jasmine looked at me with a curious gleam in her eyes.

I thought about what I was going to say and decided on telling her about everything. “I was in a car accident when I was six and I lost my family and memories. I was sent to an orphanage and was there for one year and I ran away last night with my friend.”

Jasmine’s eyes softened. “Oh I’m so sorry. Don’t worry. This place can be your new home. Everyone here is like family.”

I gave a small smile. We walked into a room that resembled a living room, with couches and everything. There were two people sitting on the couches and I somehow recognized them to the two who saved Ethan and me last night. They both looked like they were still in their teens. One of them had black hair and dark blue eyes and the other had brown hair and light brown eyes.

The one with black hair saw me and gave me a soft smile. “Hey there, before we say anything, I’m Acel and he’s Drake. How are you doing?” I gave a slight shrug as I plopped down on the couch.

“Those two are like the leaders here or something.” Jasmine said.

“Thank you for helping us last night.” I said softly.

“No worries. But we didn’t do much. You guys took down most of them yourself. Did you learn how to fight before?”

I shook my head. “I just kind of acted on instinct. I’m not sure about Ethan though.”

“Ethan. Is that your friend’s name?” I nodded.

“It seems like you have a talent in fighting.” Drake said. “Would you like to stay here?”

“What exactly do you guys do?” I asked.

“This is like a home for people who don’t want to go home or for people who don’t have a home. We all know how to fight though… so I guess you can say we’re a good type of gang? Yeah, we’re a good type of gang. We don’t pick on random civilians but there are some other gangs out there who don’t like us since we always stop them from doing their stuff. We do some fight shows sometimes to earn money and some of us have some other talents which help us with money. Does that make sense?” Jasmine said, raising an eyebrow.

I nodded.

“So, are you up for it? We’re offering the same deal to Ethan after he wakes up.” Drake offered.

Without much thinking, I spoke. “Yes. I’m in.”
