Chapter 2: The Secret Is Out

~~TWO: The Secret Is Out

Heather’s POV

I’m reading a magazine on my bed when Phoebe opens the door.

“Hey, girlfriend!” I say, sitting up. But she doesn’t smile back. Her eyes don’t light up. She’s tried to clean herself up, but I can still see eyeliner running down her cheeks.

“Are you OK?” I ask, closing Vogue and looking her in her eyes.

“Yes...no…I…“ Then she bursts into tears and runs over to me. I sit her down on the bed and make her talk to me.

“OK, it’s obvious something bad’s happened,” I say. “So go on. Spill the beans.”

She gulps and turns to face me. Suddenly she doesn’t look like a seventeen-year-old girl any more. She looks like a five-year-old who dropped her ice cream cone on the sidewalk.

“Ok…” she begins, “Two weeks ago, at the prom, Drake and I snuck out, and….” She looks like she might cry again, running her fingers through her hair.

“So… we came up here, and stuff happened and… and now I’m pregnant.”

She bursts into tears again. I let her cry over my shoulder, even though I’m wearing my favourite Los Angeles sweater.

“Hey, it’s OK!” I put my hands on her shoulders. “How long have you known?”

“I just took the test now… but I’ve been thinking about it since the prom.”

I know it’s wrong, but suddenly I’m really angry at her for not telling me sooner.

“So you didn’t bother telling me that you thought you were pregnant?” I snap at her, avoiding her eye contact. “I’m your best friend, Phoebe. You’re supposed to talk about these things with your best friend. Why didn’t you tell me?”

“I know I should have told you but….” She stands up in her fluffy panda slippers. “No offence, Heather, but you are kind of the school gossip. I couldn’t tell anyone knowing they could spread the word.”

“OK, Phoebe, I know I’m a gossip girl, but you know I wouldn’t tell anyone you were pregnant if you didn’t want me to.”

We stand up. I throw my arms around her. It’s all going to be OK. Maybe.

 Drake’s POV

 “We’re not gonna win.”

“Yeah we are.”

“The game’s almost over, Drake, I don’t think we’re going to win.”

I sigh and put the bowl of popcorn on the floor. Great. I skipped last period and dinner with Phoebe for a lousy game that we didn’t even win.

“Well, this was a waste of time,” I say, switching off the TV. “You know I missed a date with my girlfriend for this. She’s gonna kick my butt when she gets a chance.”

“Whose fault is that?” says Zach.

“You watch whatever you want, I’m gonna go see Phoebe.”

I head upstairs to her room. But it’s only Heather reading Italian Vogue in bed.

 “Where’s Phoebe?”

“She just left to look for you.”

 “Oh crud.”

I run out and bump straight into her on the stairs. She looks really pretty tonight, wearing the blue dress I bought her for her birthday last year.

“Where were you? I needed to talk to you?” she says, looking up at me because I’m almost a foot taller than her.
“I’m really sorry, but Zach wanted me to watch the football in our room and…”

“So you ditched me for some football game?”

“OK, OK, I’ve been a jerk and I deserve a punch in the face right now…“ I say quickly. Then I scream when she slaps me right across the face.

 “OW ! I didn’t mean literally!” I cry out.

“I’m sorry baby, but you ditched me when I had to tell you something really important!”

“OK then, tell me now before my face explodes.”

“OK…” I look straight into her eyes, knowing she’s trying to find the words but can’t. “The other week, at the prom, when we were in my room, and we….”

 “You’re not…?” I whisper. Oh God. This isn’t happening.

 “Yeah…. I am…”

 “Oh God… wow…. Um….”

“Drake, I’m so sorry! Please don’t break up with me!” She starts crying and I feel awful, like she’s punched me in the face a million times.

 “Hey, it’ll be OK!”

“Maybe for you! You’re not the one who’s going to go through this alone for nine months!”

“No you won’t.” I take her hands in mine. She’s shaking. “I’m not going to break up with you. This took two of us, and neither of us should be allowed to get out of it.”

I pull her into an embrace. But the thoughts spin round in my head. What have I got myself into?

2: Chapter 1
Chapter 1

~~ONE: Accidents Happen

I waited. It was the longest wait of my life. In two minutes my future would be determined. Isn’t it weird how one little stick of plastic can change your life forever? The amount of times I’d considered tossing it in the trash and forgetting about the whole thing. But it’s almost impossible to avoid these things once they happen. And anyway, you can’t run away from fate.

Phoebe’s POV

“Does it look OK?”

“I won’t be able to tell you if you don’t come out!”

I anxiously stepped out from inside the walk-in closet in my finished outfit. Not too basic, not too over the top. A strapless dress, black chiffon and lace, longer in the back than the front. White heels, white pearls around my neck and my wrists. And white roses. White roses. Fake and unscented, but somehow fragrant with romance.

“OMG, you look amazing!” squealed Heather, snapping some pictures with her smartphone.

“You look better,” I said, blushing. She was wearing the floor-length dress from her 16th birthday. A beautiful dress. Delicate layers of rosy pink silk, a halter-neck bodice and gold wedges. Not my sort of dress, but a beautiful dress all the same.

We took turns doing hair and makeup. My hair was pinned back from my face, floating down my back in soft curls. I wore my usual peach lip gloss, silver shadow and winged eyeliner. Heather wanted me to wear a tiara but I wasn’t too sure.

“It’ll make me look desperate to be Prom Queen,” I sighed, taking the silver accessory out of my hair.

“Well…. Aren’t you?”
“No! I mean, it sounds fun, but you look more like a princess than I do.”

We added a final touch of glitter and headed down to the auditorium. The music was already playing. The whole school (and the teachers) were dancing to some of the worst songs EVER. So many people. But not the one I was looking for.

“Guess who!”

A pair of hands suddenly covered my eyes. I smiled in the total darkness.

“Let’s see…. Is it Mr French?”

“Try again.”

“Is it Heather’s boyfriend Zach?”

“Keep going!”
“Is it some random guy who’s going to regret this once I slap him?”

My eyes were suddenly uncovered. Drake spun me around, lifted me up and kissed me lightly on my lips. For once I was grateful for being tiny. It made these moments perfect for both of us.

“You look beautiful,” he says, leading me onto the dance floor.

“Is that your brother’s tux?” I asked.

 “Uh… maybe?”

I leaned up and playfully kissed his nose. He looked the same as he usually did: same adorable smile, the same blue eyes, the same shaggy black hair falling over his face. But somehow he looked different- not in a bad way; he just didn’t look like the Drake I knew and loved.
I was feeling something different. Something I hadn’t felt before, and couldn’t possibly recognise. But…. somehow, I knew what it meant. I felt like….I still don’t know how to explain it.

We waited until everyone headed into the centre of the floor for the slow dance, and snuck out into my room. As soon as we knew the door was shut and locked, a leapt up and start kissing him.

It’s a long, confusing night. I’m not entirely sure either of us realized what we’re doing. We just lay there, our lips rarely parting, not sure where love ended and passion began, and when I first reached up to pull open his top shirt button, he didn’t stop me.

We slowly fell asleep side by side, my hand still in his, as if we could be entwined in love forever.

The timer goes off. My hand shaking, I pick up the test and glance at it. One line, definitely. But then…. Another. Faint, but another line for sure.

And that’s when I start crying.
