The Last Dragon

I had never thought that I would be the last of my kind. And yet this was the cruel destiny that Fate had decided to present me with.

Once we dragons were numerous and we were able to live in harmony with man kind but that soon changed centuries later. Nothing could have forewarned me on what would become of me. Nothing told me that I was to be the key to the destruction of an evil and deranged human. The stars did not tell me of the extinction of dragons.

But it happened.

Man kind was once kind to dragons. It was short lived. They hunted us down and slayed us until there was a scant few. Then that scant few soon vanished until only I remained.

I lived a miserable existence; hiding and lurking in holes, having to destroy the hordes of knights who came to slay me and most of all, I lived in fear. Fear of death because I had not yet earned my place amongst my ancestors in the sky.

So that is why I saved the Prince and future King from certain death by giving him half of my heart. I saw darkness in him and I was certain that my heart would change him. I couldn't of been more wrong. I had allowed a monster to live.

I had made a grave mistake but it was too late to reverse it.

I lived with this revelation for a few more years until Fate brought me a Knight of the Old Code to my cave. I knew his purpose for being there; I was next on his list. I was furious; he had killed another dragon, The Scarred One, before me and now I was truly the last dragon in this plane of existence.

I never would have foreseen the unlikely friendship that I would form with this Knight (Bowen was his name). And yet it happened.

We were soon locked in a rebellion against King Einon, to save the people of the kingdom. I carried a secret that I did not dare to tell Bowen; because of my ill fated gift to Einon, if he was to die then I was to die. I was afraid of such a destiny. My fear kept me silent.

I was caught by the King's dragonslayers and held captive while the battle outside the castle raged on. They finally broke into the castle and Bowen unchained me while I let my secret out.

I will never forget the look on my friend's face when I told him that he must strike me down. It tore me to pieces but it had to be done. I tried to get him to fight me before the King arrived but to no avail, he only stood still while bursts of fire swirled around him.

When King Einon came and Bowen fought him, the Knight held back. Don't hold back! I thought. This must be done!

I never wanted to be the last dragon alive neither did I want my kind to vanish from the Earth but the stars declared that the time of the dragons was over.

Bowen froze, axe raised as the King charged a him. He looked to me helplessly. In response I raised the scales on my chest to reveal my beating heart. It almost seemed like he would not slay me but with a great swing of the axe, it flew out of Bowen's hand and struck me in the heart. As I drew my final breathes, I looked to my friend and gave him a reassuring look. It's all going to be okay Bowen

My spirit then left my body and any evidence that I once existed vanished. Before I ascended to the stars I heard Bowen ask me, "What will we do Draco? Who do we turn to?"

My simple reply was this: "To the stars Bowen, to the stars."
