A New Family

“May-Rose, wake up, we’re here.” I heard Emily, the social worker, say.

I opened my eyes and looked up, in front of me was the house I was now living in. Not permanently of course, I would only be there until I was adopted or these people got tired of me. It’s the same in every household they put me in; they love me at first, I’m kind and sweet. Then I start to change a bit, the real me comes out, I start fights, let my grades go and I act rude at home.

            “Are you listening May?”

            “What?” I looked at Emily.

“God May, I’m never going to find you a home with that attitude.”

“Sorry Emily, what did you say?” I gave her a sheepish smile.

“I want you to try and be nice here, okay? I don’t want a call in the next weeks saying that they want to give you back. This is the third home this month, and I’m running out of places to put you.” She looked at me with her light brown eyes and I smiled.

“Don’t worry about me, I’ll be an angel.”

“You better,” She gave me I stern look “I know you hate new family’s, but just try for me, okay?”

“Okay.” She hugged me and got out of the truck, I did the same.

I followed her up the drive way to the house; it was beige with oak framing. The building was two stories high. Emily knocked on the door. I heard the shuffling of feet, and then the doorknob turned. When the door opened, there stood a goddess like women. She was tall with light olive skin. Her eyes shined like the ocean; a deep, gorgeous, blue. Her blonde her was cut in a long bob, ending just above her shoulders. She smiled when she saw us.

“Emily,” the women hugged Emily then pulled back and put her hands on her shoulders. “Its so good to see you again!”

“I feel the same Samantha.” The two women hugged again and Samantha turned to me.

“This must be May-Rose! It’s nice to meet you May-Rose, I’m Samantha.” She extended her hand for me too shake.

“Hi, Samantha,” I shook her hand. “You can call me May.”

“Okay then, May. Welcome to my home.” She moved aside to let me in.

Wow, was all I could say; the inside of this house was remarkable. The walls were a deep forest green and on them were pictures of what I assumed was Samantha’s family. The celling was at least 9ft up and a beautiful diamond chandelier hung from it. A grand staircase lead up to the second floor, it’s was black with an outstanding railing that resembled a tree.

“Do you like it?” I jumped in fear, and looked at Emily.

“Yes, it’s an amazing house from what I’ve seen so far.”

“Good. I must be going now, sorry I have to leave on such short notice but, duty calls.”

“Bye Emily, see you next week.” Samantha said.

“Bye!” I waved as she pulled out of the driveway; I turned around and walked into the house, Samantha behind me.

“Well, welcome to your new home.” I looked at her and smiled.

“Glad to be here.” She giggle and motion me to follow her with my hand, I took off my shoes and did just that.

She lead me up the stairs to the balcony like hall and turned left. She began pointing out the rooms, saying whose room were whose, where the bathrooms were and what not. She stopped in front of a door on the right and let me in.

“This is your room.” I looked at her then the room, then at her again.

            “Are you serious?” I stated.

“Why? Is there something wrong with it? If there is just tell me and I will-”

“There’s nothing wrong,” I big goofy grin started to form on my face “I just can’t believe its all for me!” Samantha smiled.

“Well, I’ll leave you to check out the room. My family should by home soon I’m going to start dinner, if you need anything, yell.” I nodded and she left the room.

The room was amazing, the walls were white with an indigo bookshelf running around the whole thing, Christmas lights hung off of it. There was a queen size bed to the side of the room; the sheets were almost the same color as the shelf. To the other side of the room was a desk with pencils, pens and even a laptop for schoolwork; I’d have to thank Samantha later. Against the wall in front of me were closet doors, but no dresser. I wonder, I walked up to the closet and put my hands on the doorknobs. She wouldn’t have, I flung the doors open, she did! Inside the closet was my dresser, beside it was a floor length mirror, and all around me was clothing. She had given me a whole new wardrobe.

I walked up to the mirror and looked at myself. My hair that I hade put in a ponytail this morning was falling out, I pulled out the elastic and let my black hair fall, it reached my lower back. I grabbed the brush of the dresser and brushed my hair then braided it. I looked at my face, there were a few blemishes here and there, but that didn’t bother me, even though they shone like lights on my pale face. Then I looked into my, almond shaped, greenish yellow eyes, and smiled. I will like it here, I thought, no matter what happens.

I heard a door open then close and the chatter of people talking. I couldn’t hear them that well, but my name came up a few time along with dinner, popcorn and setting the table for their new guest.

“May! Would you please come done hear? I’d like you to meet my-your new family!”

I glanced at what I was wearing, my favorite shirt and a pair of faded jeans. It will have to do.

“Coming!” I walked out of my closet and out the bedroom door, down the hall to the staircase.

Near the door I saw four other pairs of shoes along with Samantha’s and mine. I hastily descended down the stairs, to what I thought was the dinning room. In the room was a table set for six, the food laid out on it.

“Go wash your hands in that room over there.” A voice said, I turned to see Samantha. I only nodded and rushed into the small bathroom.

When I returned to the dinning room, every spot was taken but one. At the head of the table sat a man that looked like he was in his late thirties. He had light brown hair with the slightest highlight from the sun. His eyes were a light grey and his skin was tanned. To his right was Samantha. On his left was a boy who looked to be about my age. He had light blue eyes and blond hair. Freckles danced across his nose, his face was emotionless. Next to him was a boy who looked to be twelve. He, unlike his brother, was smiling and had braces. His dark, tanned skin and brown hair stood out against his grey eyes that were hinted with a bit of green. Across from him was a girl who had to be no more then ten. She had dirty blond hair and piercing purple eyes. She looked like an angel. When she waved at me I smiled in response.

“Sit May, and I’ll introduce everyone.” I did as she said.

“This is my husband,” she gestured to the man. “His name is Edward WhitePine”

“It’s nice to meet you Mr. WhitePine, I’m May-Rose but you can call me May”

“Good evening May.”

“This is my eldest son, William WhitePine.” Samantha said.

“Hello William.” He grunted than nodded at me.

“This is my youngest son, Melvin WhitePine.”

“Hi Melvin,” I smiled at him. “I like your braces.” He smiled even wider when I said that.

“Hi May, It’s a pleasure to meet you.” He said.

“The pleasure is all mine.” He blushed when I said that and looked at his plate, I giggled.

“And finally, my daughter Violet.” The girl beside her quickly looked at me than her mother.

“Hi Violet, I’m May-Rose. It’s nice to meet you.” I said in a gentle voice.

            “H-hi, May. C-can I call you Rose?”

“Of course.” She smiled then hugged my arm.

“Let’s be friends, Rose.” I smiled to myself.

“Of course.” With that we began dinner. I was asked many question and asked even more. By the time dinner was over, I had a new family.

2: Another Dimension
Another Dimension

I woke up with the light streaming in through the window. I sat up and stretched then rubbed my eyes. When I finally got out of bed, I went to my closet and grabbed a pair of shorts, a shirt and some of undergarments. I walked to the bathroom and turned on the shower, stripped and hopped in. After my hot shower, I put on my clothes and threw my hair up into a ponytail.

I walked out of the bathroom and could smell bacon; my mouth began to water. I floated to the kitchen wear I saw Samantha cooking.

“Can I help with anything?” I asked.

“No no, it’s okay, I don’t need any help.”

“Are you sure? I don’t just want to hang around well everyone else does work.”

“I’m the only one that cooks anyways. Now, how do you like your bacon?” I told her how I liked it and went to find one of the WhitePine siblings.

I checked almost all the rooms in the house, but not a WhitePine in sight. I heard a squeal from outside and ran to the window. Outside were all three siblings. Violet and Melvin were playing a game while William just watched them form the shade of the oak tree. I smiled to myself; it was like a painting on a wall. I turned around just as Samantha poked her head out of the kitchen.

“May, will you please tell the kids outside to come wash their hands for breakfast?”

“Sure thing Samantha.” She smiled and her head vanished behind the doors.

I walk to the door, I was about to open it when I remembered one foster home I was in were we where not aloud outside. I drew my hand back in fear; even touching the door there meant you got a blow to the head. I backed away slowly. Wait, what am I doing? I’m not in that hell place anymore; I can go outside whenever I want. I flung the doors open, rushed outside and with a skip in my step, I headed to the backyard.

“Guys! Breakfast is ready, Samantha wants you to-” I was cut short because something had knocked me down.

I was falling backwards; I hit the ground and started to roll towards the bushes. All I could see was green and blue, one after the other, like they were chasing each other. I felt the branches from the bushes cut me and though I should be slowing down, I just sped up. I felt like I was on one of those carnival rides that just got faster and faster, I wanted to hurl. It felt like it had been hours but it had probably only been a minute or so, when the turning finally stopped.

The first thing I tried to do was stand up, bad idea. I fell as soon as I stood; the world was turning and my head hurt like hell. I decided to lie there for a while. I wonder what the neighbors are thinking, seeing a girl roll into there yard, stand up then fall in less then a minute. They’re going to think that the WhitePine’s are crazy. I laughed to myself at that thought, shook off the dizziness and got up, slowly this time. I looked around and froze; this was not the neighbors yard.

I was in a winter wonderland, or so I thought. I stepped away from the bushes and looked at the trees, they were white. All the trees where white, the leaves, the trunks, I bet the roots were white too. I looked at the ground it was white. It looks like snow, but it’s not cold. I took a closer look at it. I reached down and touched it. It was grass; definitely grass.

I turned around and looked at the sight around me. There was a cute little house that was silver with dark shouters. A picnic table sat in the middle of the clearing, and on it was a girl. She saw me, jumped of the table and started running towards me. I backed up a bit when she arrived.

She was a very pretty girl. She had light brown hair that was streaked with blonde; it reached her shoulders. Her eyes shone with curiosity; they were a bluish grey with a hint of green around the pupils. She was tall and slender and had a simple white dress on; it danced around her knees in the wind.

“Hello and welcome to Creatura, where all mystical creatures can leave in peace,” She said with a smile. “I’m Abby.”

“Ah…hi, my name is May-Rose but everyone calls me May.” I put my hand out for her to shake. She looked at me like I had three heads. I let my hand drop to my side.

“So, what kind of creature are you?”

            “What do you mean?”

“Well are you a Elf or a Fairy? Oh! Maybe you’re an Askafroa.”

            “No, I’m a human.”

“Really? I’ve never seen one before! That’s so cool.”

“What do you mean? You’re a human.”

“No, I’m a Shapeshifter,” she changed into a dark cloud. “See?”

            “Wow.” She changed back.

I could feel the wind start to pick up. The branches on the trees started to move, the leaves began to change. They transformed into sharp looking objects that resembled shark teeth, only bigger. Clouds covered the sky and lighting struck the ground. A deep rumbled came from the world above and the earth moaned as the trees shook.

“You have to go!” Abby said in a stern voice.

            “Why?”

“Because this storm will kill you!”

            “What?”

“Just go!” She yelled and pushed me back towards the bushes.

I stumbled a bit but caught myself and started running. The wind grew stronger by the minute. The razor sharp “leaves” start flying everywhere. I heard a shriek behind me. I turned and looked at the fallen girl on the ground, the deadly spikes had penetrated her skin; her blood trickled out of the wounds. Her human form disappeared and her true self emerged, and then vanished in seconds.

I felt something whiz past my ear and I started running. These ice like spears were going haywire and I was in the middle of there fit. I felt something pierce my left calve and I stumbled. I tried putting pressure on my leg so that I could get up but an alarming pain shot through it. I bit my bottom lip so that I wouldn’t scream and started crawling towards to bushes.

The ground shook around me, I tried to crawl faster but my leg was weighing me down. I started to roll, my body hitting spikes that had already entered the ground.

I finally reached the bushes and plowed my way in. I felt the swirling vortex return, and I swear, I’ve never felt so relived in my life. As I rolled my mind drifted to the world of white trees. It was so weird, a world full of creatures that were believed unreal, well that’s what Abby told me. Maybe it was all just a messed up dream, but the pain in leg beg to differ.

When I finally rolled out of the other dimension, I could see blue, sort of. William, Violet, Melvin and Samantha were standing over me, look of worry on most of their faces, William hide any worry he had with a strait face. I sat up and looked at them all, then down at my leg. The deadly spike had turned into a leaf once again and the spot were I had been hit was just a scar now. I still had the cuts from the bushes though.

“Are you ok? You were gone for a while.” Melvin said.

“Really? It only felt like minute,” they gave me concerned looks. “Its ok guys, I’m fine.”

            “Are you sure?” Samantha asked.

“I think I might have hit my head and knocked myself it out buts that’s about it.”

“Why do you think that?” Violet asked.

“I had some wacko dream about a place called Creatura, or I think it was a dream. I’m not sure.” That’s when I saw the first emoting ever on Williams face, it was only for a second but I’m positive I saw shock. The others looked at me like I was crazy.

“It was probably a dream,” I said, forcing a smile. “Now, lets go eat breakfast.” I stood up, with help from the others and headed for the house, my bacon awaited.

3: An Adventure Awaits
An Adventure Awaits

After breakfast I wasn’t aloud to go outside for the rest of the day, Samantha was scared that I would get hurt, again. I decided to roam the house and see what secrets it held. I had just finished searching the bathroom in the downstairs hall when I was knocked over for the second time that day. I looked up to see that I had bumped into Melvin.

“Sorry May, I didn’t see you there.” He said, extending his hand to help me up.

“It’s okay, it’s not the first time I got hit today.” I started to laugh and so did he, I punched his arm lightly and he blushed.

It turns out he’s was not even a year younger then me, and there I was thinking he was twelve, when in reality he was fourteen. I was fourteen going on fifteen, Violet was eleven and William was sixteen.

“Melvin! Melvin, I need your help!” Yelled Violet, she was carrying something in her arms.

            “What is it?” Melvin asked.

“It’s Mr. Hop! He didn’t eat his carrot!”

“So?” Violet stared at her brother in shock.

“He, always, eats his carrot,” She stepped forward and poked him in the chest. “First.”

“Why don’t you go tell mom then?”

            “She’s out shopping.”

“What about Will? Why didn’t you tell him?”

            “He doesn’t care for him.”

“I don’t care for who?” All three of us screamed then turned around to face William.

“Mr. Hop, my pet bunny.” Said Violet.

“You mean that pest.” He said sneering at the little rodent.

“He’s not a pest,” she turned to Melvin. “I told you that he doesn’t care.” I smiled, so this is what it’s like to have siblings.

“We have to take him to the vet!” Violet whispered, petting his head, “I don’t want him to die.”

“Who’s gonna take you? Mom and dad are both gone.” I snapped my fingers.

“You’re sixteen, right Will?” I asked

            “Yeah, what about it.”

“Don’t you have a drivers license?”

“Yeah, so?” I looked at him at disbelief; these people were dense.

“So, you can drive us there.” He looked at me as if I was about to kill him.

“No way.” Was all he said then he crossed his arms.

“Then I’ll drive them there. In my last foster home they taught me how to drive a tractor, no different from a car right?” I said smirking.

“Yes it’s different! Plus the only car left is mine, and I have the keys.” He jingled them in the air. I grabbed them and backed up.

“That’s great, if it gets damaged, I won’t get blamed!” He glared at me and if glares could kill I would have dropped dead right there.

“Let’s go you two! We have a bunny to save.” Violet smiled and started running, Melvin followed her, laughing.

We ran down the halls making are way to the garage, William behind us, using some very bad words. I started laughing too; this was remarkably fun. We reached the garage and there sat a truck, room for three.

“Get in, quick,” I tossed the keys to Melvin, “Start the truck!”

I ran back to the garage door and closed it, I began turning the lock when William busted through the door, and I fell on my but. This is not my day. I scrambled to my feet and darted to the truck, I opened the door and flew in. I was about to put the pedal to the medal when William jumped in front of the ford.

“Stop!” He screamed, putting himself between the truck and the door.

“Only if you drive her to the vet!”

“Fine.” He walked up to the driver side.

“Also, you can’t tell Samantha I did this, I like it here and don’t feel like leaving.”

“Fine, but get out. And don’t try to kill my siblings again.” I opened the door and jumped out.

“They weren’t going to die, I was never going to drive the truck. All I needed to do was get you scared, then you would do it.” He got in and glared at me.

“Of course.” He said sarcasm dripping from every word; he slammed the door then drove out of the garage.

Finally they’re gone! I can go outside and check out that bush now. I ran out to the back and walked up to the shrubbery I stumbled through this morning. I studied it a bit then poked it, nothing happened. I put my hand in, still nothing. I decided to walk through; I ended up in the neighbors yard. Maybe be it was just a stupid dream. I looked down at my scarred leg. Not a dream. I touched my scar and a thought struck me, I rolled through the bushes on the way in and on the way out. So I have to roll to get in, smart! I got down on a knee and was about to roll when I heard a horn honk.

I turned to see who had got home, but no one got out of the car. They honked again. I stood up and headed towards the vehicle.

When I arrived, the guy behind the wheel rolled down his window. It was Mr. WhitePine.

“Hey Mr. WhitePine, what are you doing home? It’s only noon.”

“I forgot my lunch in the fridge this morning, could you go in and grab it please?”

“Yeah no problem.” I went in and headed towards the kitchen, I grabbed his lunch out of the fridge and rushed back out.

“Here Mr. WhitePine, your lunch.”

“Thanks May you’re such a sweet girl.”

“Thanks, now get back to work! Your lunch is only an hour.”

“Right, bye May!” He rolled up his window and started to drive back to work, I waved as he left.

I turned around to go back to my research when a truck nearly plowed me over. I jumped out of the way just in time and glared at the driver as he got out. William stared down at me, on the ground for the fourth time today.

“Oups.” Was all he said a smirk on his face. Behind him was Melvin, he shoved William out of the way and helped me up.

“That was dangerous Will! You could have killed her!”

“So? I wasn’t actually going to hit her; I knew she would jump. I just needed to scare her a little.” He walked into the house.

“Are you ok?” Melvin asked.

“Yeah, thanks for your help, again.” I smiled and he looked away, his cheeks on fire.

“Rose! You saved Mr. Hop! The vet said that it’s a good thing we got him there because he might have died!” Violet screamed and she came up and hugged me.

“No problem. So were is Mr. Hop?”

“At the vet, they said that they needed to keep him over night.”

“That means they’re going to make him all better.” I said smiling.

“You guys coming in? Or are you going to stand there all day?” Melvin asked, I giggled and walk up to the house Violet running ahead of me, pretending to be an airplane.

The rest of the day went by fast; the incidents of today kept secret from Samantha except for the fact that Mr. Hop was at the vet. Around nine p.m. I was packing a bag full of things I would need in that other world. I had an extra set of clothing, a jacket, a blanket, a few elastics, and bathroom necessities. I also grabbed some rope, a set of cloves, a pair of scissors and a flashlight with some spare batteries. Now all I needed was water and some food. I crept down stairs and into the kitchen. I grabbed two 1liter bottles of water, some apples, a box of crackers and some canned tuna. I zipped up the bag and headed back up stairs. I almost made it to my room when I ran into William.

“Good evening William.”

“Good evening May. What’s in the bag?” He asked.

“None of your business.” He glared at me.

“You’re not thinking of running away, are you?”

“No.” Will started circling me.

“Good.”

“And why is that good?” He pinned me against the wall.

“That’s none of your business.” He whispered, than he let me go and walked away, leaving me shocked and angry.

I am so glad I’m leaving this place, that boy is driving me crazy! I walked into my room and set my alarm clock for midnight. Then went to sleep.

The beeping of that clock was so loud I swear I woke up the whole house. I shut it off quick and waited to see if anyone heard it. No one came. I got out of bed and put on some spandex, a baggie shirt and a pair of combat boots. I grabbed my bag and snuck into the night, to the portal in the backyard. I got on one knee and rolled into the swirling vortex, an adventure awaited me on the other side.

.           .           .

One thing May didn’t know is that her alarm did wake someone up and that someone was very pleased. He drew a star on the wall and cut open his palm, rubbing the blood in the center of his star. A face appeared on the wall, it was blurred but clearly annoyed.

“Why do you contact me so late at night?” The face asked.

“I have news of the girl.”

“What is it?” It snarled.

“May has entered the portal.” The face smiled with delight.

“Wonderful! Tomorrow I want you to follow her.”

“Of course Master.” The face nodded and disappeared.

The boy smirked at his job well done and went to bed; he had a big day tomorrow.
