Prologue

Little girl is hiding her face with her hands. She is about 5 years old, fragile and tiny comared to the world. Still scared, she removes her hands and looks around. Stains of blood are all over her hands and dress her grandma bought her last week. She is surrounded with corpses, millions of corpses.
-Mommy? – she calls out to her mother weakly, but no one replied. Little girl tried to walk through that ocean of corpses, but her short legs were too weak for that. Finally, she just collapsed over one of the corpses and licked the blood off of her lips, then closed her eyes and fell asleep.

Creature was staring at her from the top of the tree, cleaning its wings and licking the blood off of its claws. Its bloody red eyes were piercing the little girl as she tried to stay as alive as she could. The beast snorted, streched its wings and went up in the air, then low down to the ground, but it didn't lend. It trapped the little girl between its claws and flied away.

Chapter 1

6 YEARS LATER

Danielle opened her eyes and sighed silently. It's been six years since her little girl went missing. No one knew where she was. Also, it's been six years of peace. The thing that was causing the death disappeared, but Danielle wasn't calm at all. She sat up and pushed the sheet off. She shivered as her toes touched the cold ground and glanced to the window. She closed the blinds before she went to sleep and now the sun was struggling to find a way into the room to bright up her day. But she didn't wanted it. She didn't wanted shiny rays dancing in her room, she didn't wanted to smile or laugh. She wanted to watch and listen her daughter laughing. Her little Jenna.

It was always summer in Uther. That was the gift from Gods and the people were grateful. It was also one kind of repayment for all the sadness and deaths that happened before. It kinda worked, at least Gods thought so. Some people, like Danielle were still living in the winter of sadness for losing the loved one. Her husband died on her arms not long after Jenna was born and Jenna was missing. Some people suggested a funeral for her, but Danielle rejected saying that she still believes that Jenna is alive. And in the beginning a lot of people thought the same. But the time made them change their minds.

Danielle sighed again and got dressed. It was one bright yellow dress that Jenna liked the most. Right after getting dressed, she rushed down the wooden stairs and drank a cup of milk. Her old mother was snoring in an armchair. That meant that she was playing with her cards and prophecies whole night, again. But Danielle hadn't enough time to wake her mother up, she grabbed bandnana and tied her hair with it, then she rushed out of the house.

She stood by an apple stand, her working place and counted coins she had in knitted bag.
-How are things, Danielle? – asked her friend while picking apples. Danielle just murmured in reply.
-Still nothing about little Jenny, huh? – her friend looked up to her with sadness in her eyes, but Danielle kept quiet, she didn't feel like talking.
-It's... just... she... the guys are still looking... are you gonna buy that apples or you took priest's role? – she cut it off and her friend went quiet and payed for bag of apples, then went away.
-Look, you're pushing people away with that attitude – a woman from the orange stand told her later.
-I know – Danielle moaned silently.
-It's going to be okay, just keep hope, okay sweetheart?
-Okay – Danielle nodded and didn't spoke a thing for the rest of the day.

*******

-Mommy? Mommy? Mommy, I'm hungry – Jenna spoke and the creture opened its red eyes.
-What do you want, sweetheart? – it asked her as it connected with her mind.
-Can I have some flesh today? – Jenna asked as she played with the edge of her dress.
-Of course, Jenny baby – the monster replied her with thought and shaked its dusty wings.
-Yay! – Jenna laughed and danced happily as monster flied away to kill something for her.

Chapter 2

One drop. Dwo drops. One crack. Whole glass covered with tiny cracks. Collapse. Millions of pieces running away; each one in its direction.
-Ah – was the only sound that escaped from Danielle's mouth. As the glass she just washed slipped out of her hand and shattered as it hit the ground. Nothing else. She just kneeled down and gathered the tiny pieces with a paper towel. She didn't even notice that she cut herself on one of those tiny pieces of broken glass.
-What happened, darling? – asked her old mother from the kitchen door. Danielle just looked up at her and shook her head no. Her mother lowered her look and noticed more pieces of glass around.
-Oh I see. Do you need help?
-No, mom, just go rest, okay? – Danielle cut off as she threw paper towel with shattered pieces to the trash can.
-Daughter, you are not the same since... – her mother went quiet for a moment, then continued – Look, I know how you feel. You lost your daughter and I lost my only grandchild. But you should... move on, at least try.
-To move on? Mother, I have nothing left, I'm dead person.
-Rubish. Come here – said old lady as she opened her arms. Danielle walked over and accepted an offered hug. Her mother embraced her with her arms and gently rubbed her back.
-You're still my little girl and I'm still your mommy, you know that, right? – Danielle nodded in response.
-That's right. Our little Jenna will come back, you'll see. I promise you.
-Mom, don't make the promises you can't keep.
-I'm not doing it! I'm promising you that little Jenny will come back.

Night kept going and Danielle was sitting by the window in her bedroom, watching stars. She was going through old drawings Jenna made before she went missing. She loved to draw, it made her and her mother happy. She drew flowers, cats and sky. She was good at drawing roses and daisies. She loved to make flower crowns out of daisies. She loved to run. She said that she felt so free when she was running, she felt like a bird preparing to spread her wings and fly away, to run away. That day her mother told her not to run away ever. When she asked why, Danielle answered with: - Because mommy will be very sad if you do it.
-Jenna – Danielle whispered though the window – If you ran away, please, please, come back, mommy is very sad.

******

The creature with red eyes and wings widely spreaded flied above Danielle's house. No one saw it and no one heard it.
-No one can see me, I'm just a shadow for those who don't believe and wind for those who fear me – monster's words slipped out between its sharp teeth, silent as raindrops that just lended to the dusty ground.
-No one – monster spoke again with it's silent and creepy voice. In the same moment, Danielle looked up and gasped.

Chapter 3

Danielle's brown eyes were watching the thing that was right above her. Black creature with pieces of rotten skin and flwsh, with  wings that were just bones with large piece of black skin. It didn't have neck, head was placed between its shoulders, but its eyes were large, red like blood. Her hand covered her mouth, holding back another shocked gasp. She stood there, paralyzed.
-Little Jenny girl will be so glad with the meal I'm bringing to her – the monster whispered again and Danielle noticed that it was squishing something between it's long claws. The monster licked it's large teeth, the result were few drops of spit dropping on Danielle's window. It was bronze, almost brown. Then the monster spread its wings and flew away. Danielle just looked after it, staring in shock, then she broke down in tears of desperation and happiness as well.

-You're saying you saw the creature that took away little Jenna? – her mother was attacking her with questions next morning.
-Yes.
-What did it look like? – she asked aother question while sitting down for the table.
-It was... dark, black... and it had rotten skin and flash hanging from it's body – Danielle spoke and her mother just kept nodding in respond.
-It also had wings... very skinny with that large black piece of skin, I don't even know how does that thing fly with them
-Is that it? – her mother was impatient.
-No, no. It had long claws and sharp teeth. Oh, and long tongue! It licked its teeth with it and a bit of spit fell onto my window. It was brownish, a bit like bronze – as she finished the sentence, her mother got up and walked to her room and Danielle followed. As her mother entered her room, she screamed. Millions of tiny instects; roaches, spiders, flies, fleas; were on her window, covering the spot were the spit was.
-What is this?! – her mother yelled in shock.
-I... I don't know... – Danielle barely spoke, she was just shocked as her mother was.
-Can you get me the broom? We got to chase these away!
-I'll get it, mom – she said and walked down the stairs to the closet where they kept cleaning stuff. Only sound that left her mouth as she opened it was a gasp. Couple of huge spiders were eating the broom. She just shut the door and locked them, then ran upstairs to get her mother. Termites were coming out of the wooden stairs as she walked.
-Mom! Mom! We got to get out of here! – she yelled and her motherrushed out of her bedroom.
-What is happening here? – her mother yelled, a bit scared, a bit in shock.
-I have no idea! – she said, grabbed her mother's hand and rushed down the stairs as fast as she could. Stairs collapsed, uncovering home of colony of termites. Danielle fastly dragged her mother outside.
-Wait! My books! – her mother yelled.
-I'll get you new ones – Danielle said.
-No, you can't get the new ones. These are books that we shall need, no one printed those in hundreds of years!
-Mom, what are you talking about?
-I know what was the thing that took little Jenny away but I need my books to find the exact name! – her mother yelled, slightly irritated. Danielle just stared at her not knowing what to do.

*****

-Jenny girl? Jenny girl? Mommy's bringing you a breakfast – monster connected with little girl's mind.
-What did you get me, mommy? – Jenna asked as she rubbed the sleep away from her eyes.
-I brought you a bunny and a fox – monster sent her thoughts again and passed her its opened claws, uncovering rabbit and a fox, both with broken neck.
-Yay! Mommy, you're the best! – yelled Jenna happily and kissed monster right under one of its bloody red eyes. Piece of monster's skin fell down and kept hanging. It was the area where little Jenna pressed her lips. It was monster's only weakness. Love. As much as it was hurting it, it was fulfilling it.
