Chapter 1

It was the evening of one of the hottest days in Chicago and everyone was rushing around trying to get their chores done quickly before the day ended so they could get back home or work where there’s air conditioning. However Katy was at the drug store picking up a prescription for her father before she headed off to work. While waiting to pay Katy noticed an older lady getting into a heated discussion with the pharmacist over the price about the insurance lowering the co-pay, causing her to not have enough money. Katy watched as the older lady left as the pharmacist called her up.

“$5.86,” the pharmacist said as he started to bag.

“How much is the lady’s that just left?” She asked.

The pharmacist gave her a strange look as he told her the price and looked shocked when she said that she would pay for it. The pharmacist rang up the total order which ended up coming to $350.86. Katy didn’t say anything as she grabbed both prescriptions and ran out the door to catch up to the lady. About a block and a half ahead she caught sight of the lady who was with a group of men in suits looking intimidating. As she got closer, she heard them speaking what sounded like Italian, and when one of the men saw her coming closer, he nodded to the others, alerting them, and they stopped talking and looked at her. Katy glanced at them back while she walked up to the lady.

“Here this is yours.” She said as she held out the lady’s medication.

Nobody moved and everyone stared at her.

“It’s your diabetes medicine. You need it.” Katy tried again, looking confused as nobody moved.

Katy slowly reached out and grabbed the lady’s’ hand and placed the medication in her hands and made a confused smile and started to walk away.

Coming out of their stupor, the group looked at each other as if asking if the women actually paid for the medication for the lady. Before, what looked like the leader of the group could thank Katy, she had got onto the train platform and in a train.

Looking at the women, the leader who had dark blonde hair and blue eyes was easily 6ft spoke.

“Who was that.” He demanded, but also used a soft tone.

“Oh. I don’t know, I think I saw her in the pharmacy.” The women replied  back while looking down at the medication with a smile on her face.

“But whoever she is, she’s an angel,” she continued.

The man looked to where Katy had disappeared to, and without looking away, ordered one of the men to find what he could on the girl.

Walking into John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital, Katy smiled and waved high to the nurses she would be replacing tonight, and walked into the employee room and walked into Melissa, her friend and fellow nurse. Melissa is a mother, and Latino.

“How was your day,” Melissa asked as Katy put her stuff away and pulled a scrub top over her tank.

“It was okay,” Katy started to say but then paused for a moment. “You know, I was creped out by this group of guys. I was at the pharmacy getting my dad’s prescription, and this lady’s prescription went up because the insurance co-pay went down, and she left without it because she didn’t have the money. I felt bad you know, so I paid for it and when I caught up to her to give it to her, she was with this group of guys, and they all looked professional you know, any way when I gave the mediation, they all stood there and looked at me like I was some sort of leper, so I put the bag in her hand and got out of there a quick as I could.” Katy finished as she and Melissa walked to the nurses’ station and signed so the day shift could go home.

“Well, at least you did your good deed for the month,” Melissa remarked.

“I’m a nurse, all I do is good deeds,” Katy replied with a laugh.

“Ya, but it’s work. It doesn’t count.” Said Melissa

Katy shook her head as she walked away to checked on patients. The night was slow with only a few people coming in. One of which was a small bachelor party came in when one of the guys who was drunk fell and hit his head. However, around 2, there were 3 seriously wounded people brought in from a car collision. Both drivers and a civilian.

Buy 7’oclock, the day shift started to arrive and Katy couldn’t wait to get home and get some sleep. After Katy and Melissa signed out and changed out of their dirty scrubs, headed to the parking lot. They both let out a sigh of relief as the air felt cool; making them think that there was finally a break on the heat. They said their goodbyes and parted ways as Melissa got into her car and Katy walked to her fathers a few blocks away to drop of his medication. After, she stopped by the grocery store to pick up a few groceries before heading home.

Once Katy reached her apartment building she collected her mail and walked up to her apartment and entered. Even though it was small, only fitting one couch, a coffee table, a TV, and room for a table with two chairs, and a small bedroom, it was all she needed. Taking a shower and quickly getting into bed to try and catch some sleep before it got to bright, Katy had no idea about the situation she was unintentionally getting into.

Chapter 2

Sitting in an office near the Chicago Loop area of the city, the young man with dark blond hair and blue eyes from yesterday was going over some papers on his desk when another man wearing a dark blue Armani suit walked in carrying a folder.

“Here’s the information you wanted boss, there wasn’t a lot.” The man said handing the first man the folder.

“Leave,” the man said.

“Luka, what’s your interest in this woman?” the second man asked.

“It doesn’t concern you Tony. I said leave.” Luka demanded

The man now identified as Tony left closing the door while Luka proceeded to open the file.

Name: Kateri Whittmore

DOB: July 20 1990, Age 23

Address: ?

Employer: John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital

Occupation: Nurse

Father: John Whittmore

Mother: Pana Whittmore (nee: Okpik) Deceased

Luka threw the folder onto the desk in anger at how little information there was. He got up and walked over to the window and looked out at the view of the city thinking of a plan. He ended up staring out the window for about an hour before walking out of the room and out the building with Tony and two other men joining him in a black BMW. Luka got into the back with Tony joining him, while the other two men climbed into the front. Luka ordered the driver to take him to the hospital that Katy works at. There was no talking during the ride to the hospital. When they pulled up to the Emergency entrance, all four got out and walked in. Everyone who was in the ER, patients and staff stopped what they were doing and watched as they walked up to the triage desk, but quickly looked away and went back to what they were doing when Luka glared at them.

One of the nurses in triage came up to the group and asked if one of them needed to see a doctor.

“Where is Ms. Whittmore?” Luka asked the nurse.

“Katy? She starts at 9, she won’t be in for another 7 hours.” the nurse told him.

Luka didn’t say anything as he walked out of the ER and got back into his car and drove away.

Meanwhile, Katy was just waking up. She showered and changed and went out to do some grocery shopping. Coming back, she made lunch and dinner for tonight for herself and Melissa, and watched TV till 5 before she got ready and left for work.

Katy walked into the ER around 6:30pm, and punched in. However, after she had put her stuff away and walked out of the employee’s lounge she was grabbed by one of the nurses and was pushed into the drug lock up.

“Amy? What’s wrong?”

“Listen, some guy came in earlier looking for you, and he seemed off.”

“What guy? What did he look like?” And what do you mean off?”

“Dark blond hair and blue eyes. He didn’t give his name. He asked if you were here and left when I told him you’d be here at 7, and he had men with him, in suits. They don’t seem like good people.”

“Amy, it’s okay, calm down, I’ll handle it if he comes back. Go home.”

Katy watched Amy walk away and wondered who would come to the ER and ask for her by name, but was drawing a blank. Katy met up with Melissa and they started to change the sheets on the beds.

“So, what are you doing this weekend? It’s your first off in a while,” Melissa asked while making a hospital corner.

“Ah, I’m going down to the ice rink to help teach skating. What about you?”

“Spend time with my kids,” Melissa replied just as another nurse came up to get Katy.

Katy and the nurse walked to triage where there was a man in a suit waiting. It was the same man that Amy described to her, but she doesn’t recall meeting him before.

“Ms. Whittmore,” He said as they walked up to him, the only thing separating them was the safety glass.

“Yes, how can I help you?” Katy asked as she reached down to get an Intake form.

“My name is Luka Stivale,” was he said back.

“Okay, Mr. Stivale, do you need to see a doctor?”

“Why’d you do it?”

“Do what?”

“The medicine. Why’d you buy the medicine for the lady?” Luka asked as Katy finally understood where she had seen him before.

“It was the right thing to do.”

“How much do you want?” Luka asked, reaching into his suit and bringing out his wallet.

“Oh, no no no no, I don’t need anything, it was the right thing to do,” Katy quickly rushed out before he could pull out any money.

Luka was going to say something else but was interrupted when a man on a gurney was pushed through the doors by 2 paramedics. Katy yelled how it was nice meeting him as she ran up to the gurney and wheeled the man into one of the ER rooms with the paramedics and a doctor following her, while Luka stayed still and watched her till he couldn’t see her anymore. He took out $500.00 dollars and put it into an envelope and put Katy’s name on it and left it on the triage desk and walked out of the ER and got into the car that was waiting for him and drove off.
