Prologue

Hello I'm Anna, I'm 13 years old and I'm English. My family and I came to Arizona in America for the summer holidays and all to soon it was time to go back. I decided to take a walk in the woods behind our summer cabin, you see it has been a hectic day since we'd been packing as we were going back to England.

As I walked through the woods I brushed my hands on the pine tree, already missing the smell of nature in it's richest form and the "crunch noise the leaves made every time I stepped on them. As I reached the stream that sat at the edge of the forest, it dawned on me that I would most of all miss the peace I felt being here. Being here gave me the feeling that nothing mattered and I could get lost in my thoughts for eons without any interruptions. The weird though was every time I went to the stream it seemed as if someone was watching me but when I would turn around I couldn't see anything or anyone. But that changed today.

I heard a twig snap and instantly I was alert and up turning around to find the most beautiful yet scariest thing I'd ever seen. It took me awhile, as this creature and I stared at each other, that it wasn't a dog. It was way too big for that. I then started thinking that it couldn't be true those things don't exist. they were in books, movies, dream but never could they be real. That was it! I was dreaming right now because I didn't feel any fear or nervousness. With this boldness I slowly but gradually make my way to the creature.

With a sturdy hand and steady breath I reach out and touch it's fur, much to my amazement it didn't make any sudden jump but stood as still as a winter night. It seems as if the creature relaxed with my touch which I find pretty amusing considering I should be the one all tensed up and scared. I was so engrossed in looking the creature over that I jumped when my phone vibrated in my pocket. This left me a bit shaken and looking at the caller Id it made it worse because it was my dad calling.

"Hey dad what's up?" I said sounding a bit shaky.

"Do you know what time it is?! I thought we told you not to go so far into the woods, especially when it's getting dark. I can't see you anywhere!" Sounding tense and apprehensive. "Anna get your behind home this instant!" he said firmly and turn his phone off.

I looked at the time on my phone and realized that it was 7 and I'd let the house at 3. I knew that when I got home I would be grounded and one thing you should know about my parents is that they don't care where in the world you are, you'll still be grounded. But I think being grounded will be worth it because I've seen this creature. Coming out of my thought I turn to see the creature looking at me and I knew it was time to say goodbye.

This might sound strange but at that but just as that thought ended the creature stood up and started walking in the direction in which I came and started bobbing it's head as if calling me to follow it. In response I got up and followed it. As we walked I told the creature about myself, you as you do, I didn't want it thinking I was some creep just going into the woods all the time. Just when we reached near the cabin the creature abruptly. I bent over toward the creature to see it already looking up at me and i instantly felt sad. Sad to leave this place that I'd grown to call my home. I ruffled the creatures fur and whispered "see you next summer" and it barked as if understanding. I smiled and walked off turning around a couple of times to wave but also to see if it was still there.

As expected when i got in my parents went on about how I was only 13 and it didn't mean I could roam about the woods by myself. Blah blah blah about how they had given me freedom and blah blah blah about how trusted me but now I didn't deserve it neither because I'd taken advantage of it. So after an hour and a bit I was officially grounded for a month and sent off to bed.

As I said before I wouldn't be upset about this because I'd seen something I couldn't explain and no one knew about it so it was mine to keep. With that being my last thought I fell asleep wishing we wouldn't have to go back to England but would stay in this beautiful forest in Arizona unbeknownst to the world what hides behind the trees.
