Chapter one

'Diane please, I'm begging you lock the doors, block the windows. Do every thing you can to keep them out.' The line went dead.

"Keep who out?" Diane whispered shakily into the phone.

"Mom!" A shrill scream came from the next room over.

Diane jumped and the phone dropped to the ground making the only sound louder than her own heart beat.

She looked up and around the room.

There was only one large rectangle window sitting on the wall straight across from her. Right next to that window was a very tall oak dresser that came up to about three fourths of the way up the window.

Diane just stared at the dark designs that were carved into all the drawers.

"Mom!" The scream came again. "Come here!"

She jumped again, then ran to the other side of the dresser.

She put her shoulder up against the side of the dresser and pushed with everything that she had. The dresser moved very slowly but it inched closer and closer to covering the window.

"Mom!" The scream got frantic.

She heard something bag against the wall, the lock clicked.

She grunted and finished sliding the dresser to make a blockade.

Then she ran to the door, kicking the phone out of the way at the same time.

She walked into the other room not expecting to see her only daughter running around shoving things in place to cover the windows, the television screen showed images of grossly disfigured bodies.

'These... things have taken over. The streets are over run with thousands of them. The monsters are as people would describe them as... Zombies.' The screen showed a security tape of a street that was about a block a way from their home.

Diane couldn't believe her eyes, the pure horror struck her, her eyes grew while her feet planted themselves. The streets were desolate of everything, except the supposed "zombies." Unable to move, Diane absorbed the shock that came with the images. These... creatures must have been human, at some point. They all looked as if they had been driven to madness. The camera zoomed in on Mrs. Hennedy. She was our neighbor, she lived just down the street Mrs. Hennedy was known for being the friendliest person on the block. But now... Diane wasn't even sure how she recognized her. Mrs. Hennedy used to be a pretty, petite blonde, with a round face and blue eyes. The Mrs. Hennedy shown on the scream was completely different. Her eyes were glazed and had a yellow tint. Mrs. Hennedy's hair appeared disgusting, dirty and resting about her head in lumps. Blood dripped slowly down her chin as it continually oozed from her mouth. Her skin looked to be melting off. Exposing the throbbing muscle tissue, and whatever skin wasn't melting off clung to a green hue. Diane continued to look closer out of curiosity, and suddenly her gut wrenched. She couldn't help but notice what Mrs. Hennedy had in her mouth. Looking close Diane could see the flesh inside of Mrs. Hennedy's mouth. But what made Diane truly upset was the object keeping the flesh inside Mrs. Hennedy's mouth company. It was Beth's bracelet, Mrs. Hennedy's daughter.

Diane felt tears coming down her face rapidly. She pressed her hand to her mouth to keep from loosing every thing she had in her stomach at that very moment.

The camera zoomed out again. This time she saw the little girl, Beth, crumpled on the sidewalk. Blood spilling rappidly from missing pieces of flesh.

Zales came running in, finally done with barricading the house.

"Mom, what's going on?"

Diane stood there, crying, her hand on her mouth.

Zales looked at the TV. "What the...?" Zales fell silent, there was no sound in the room, other than Diane's sobs.

Noticing this Zales did the only thing she could think of, she turned up the volume on the TV. Still nothing, she turned up the volume as loud as the TV would allow, but everything still fell silent. Zales turned to her mother, Diane turned as well, and there they sat in realization. The biggest problem that they faced, wouldn't be the killers, but the silence.

...

Zales sat in her room quietly staring at her open laptop. She had been on face book waiting for her news feed to finally add something new. Nothing had changed for two days already.

It seemed that the whole world had suddenly stopped, no one knew where the creatures were coming from.

The last thing she had on her news feed was Beth's post of her family pictures.

Beth was standing next to her mother. She was so skinny and so pretty. Her smile showed all her white teeth which was really bright against her tanned skin and her blonde curls framed her face just like her mothers. Her father stood on the other side of her with his face completely blank.

Both Beth and Zales rarely ever saw Mr. Hennedy. He worked with Zales father.

Her heart stung just thinking about her own father.

She clicked on the search bar.

She typed in Dr. Jones.

No results. Like usual.

Zales shut her laptop, she got up to get a drink of water. Her mother was sitting in the kitchen.

"You gonna eat anything?"

"Still not hungry..."

"I understand, but it's been two days, you have to eat something."

Zales stomach rumbled in agreement. She stalked over to the fridge in compliance with her stomach. Zales sighed.

"Mom... We don't have any food."

"Really?"

"Yeah, what are we going to do?"

Chapter two

The tires squealed, as the rubber burned on the pavement while they tore out of the parking lot. No one wanted to stay here longer than need be.

Xavier held tightly on to the cab of the truck with a large shovel in one hand to keep the pests off.

His black hair whipped around him, while he looked ahead, keeping an eye out for monsters. Xavier couldn't keep his heart from pounding fast, it's echo in his head. He tried his hardest to focus, the last thing they needed was another supply run failed.

The silence was unbearable.

And there it was, nothing more than a moving shadow. Xavier looked over and saw one of the creatures trying to get into the truck. He ran over, shovel in hand, determination written across his face.

Xavier let out a grunt as he used all of his force to swing the shovel across the monster's face. Looking again Xavier saw that the shovel hit had left the creature even more broken than before, the monster's skin had dripped off onto the shovel. All that remained of this creature's face was skull and muscle tissue. It always seemed so strange to Xavier that the skin of these former humans loped off so easily, as if it was barely there in the first place. The creature bled profusely, but that didn't stop it. Driven by a carnal need to feed, the creature continued to climb the truck. That's when Xavier looked back and saw that one of the monster's legs had gotten caught in between the tire and the truck. The tires tore the monster's limb apart, this elicited no response from the creature, as it drove on, determined to feed. Xavier gave it one more good smack, sending the creature down. The fall broke the monster's other leg, leaving him crippled and starving.

Then it happened, the silence broke. This wasn't a sound from the truck, and it certainly wasn't from any of the creatures. It was a scream.

In that moment Xavier was hit by a wave of emotion. A mix of happiness for the broken silence and worry for the screaming victim. He jolted his body back into the lookout position, and there they were. Two women, it appeared to be a mother daughter team. They only had simple weapons that could be found around the house. The older woman held a shovel, while the younger wielded a frying pan. The creatures were huddled around them, apparently breaking the silence was not a smart idea.

Xavier watched as the truck sped towards the hoard. The older one was putting up a descent fight, tearing flesh and bone off of the closest ones. Every time the shovel would swing mounds of flesh would fly. The swings were getting slower and sluggish trying to fight off the gruesome looking humanoids. He was getting closer and closer to saving these poor souls.

Then he saw the lady had left an opening long enough for one to clamp its mangled jaw down onto her shoulder. His heart fell, she had been infected. He couldn't save her. He looked to the younger one as she watched her mother slowly being eaten alive by these things. She saw the flesh being torn off her mothers body, then watched as they swallowed the chunks they had bitten off. She was absolutely silent.

He had maneuvered himself closer to the side of the truck.

Twenty feet, ten feet. The truck had began to slow down.

He dipped down into a crouch, reached his arm out and snagged the younger female off her feet. He tried to carefully toss her into the bed of the truck, but she came crashing down hard on the small space between the supplies and the side.

"You alright?" He had asked leaning down to make sure she was still alive.

"My mom." The girl had said groaning as she sat up and looked out to the hoard.

They were all cluttered around the grown woman. She had her head thrown back in agony. He could see the ripped muscles in her neck and the white bone of her hyoid. Her eyes were open still looking around as the creatures continued to wretch skin and muscle tissue off her body and into their mouths. The woman's screams were fervent and carried through the silence. Their fingers laced with her blood. Xavier watched waiting for the change, he would never kill a human, so he had to wait. Then it happened.

The woman's body began to convulse. It was obvious that her body was no longer under her control. As the convulsions became more violent. The horde disbanded, leaving the woman on her own. Her skin began to sag, her eyes became glazed. Her mouth sat open, a gaping hole showing her new hunger. Her breath was ragged, indicating that she was in her final stages of human form. Foam bubbled from her mouth, her eyes taking on a yellow tint, and finally the convulsions stopped... Silence came over her. The woman got up slowly from her position on the asphalt. She crawled to the truck, her mouth still hung open, as if dislocated at the jaw. Her eyes were locked on human flesh.

He pounded on the cab of the truck with his fist, the truck lurched forward. Its tires left long black skid marks behind as it raced away from the crawling, scrambling creatures hungering for human flesh.

Chapter three

Zales stared silently out from the bed of the truck. Her butt was hurting from sitting too long but she didn't care. She kept replaying the scene of her mother being torn to bits over and over again. She still hasn't cried.

Her tears were some where out of reach.

She didn't cry at the gruesome sight of Mrs. Hennedy turning her own daughter into a hungry monster. She didn't cry when she was ripped away from death by a boy with a shovel. She wouldn't shed any tears for the memory of the sweet lady she lost to those things.

Zales couldn't hear anything except for the low roar of the engine. None of the dark figures crawling after the truck made any type of sound.

There were creepy disgusting views of what used to be human, but they really didn't freak her out considering all the operations she went to with her father growing up. No the rotting flesh melting off dark pick muscles and pale white bones didn't freak her out, it was the silence they possessed.

The boy standing next to her still hadn't introduced himself. Zales understood, he was busy. He was swatting monsters left and right the whole way. Zales still had no idea where they were headed, but she figured that it was better to stay with people rather than monsters.

Zales body jerked as the truck rumbled over a pothole in the road, the boy stumbled and landed in her lap.

She ignored the body laying on top of her, she saw what they were headed to.

In the distance she could see a building rising above the dusty road. Metal gleamed off of it reminding her that it was a factory completely surrounded by a dulling grey chain link fence and slumped bodies against the fence.

She could see people walking around the perimeter with riffles.

Then the boy stood back up completely blocking her view.

She could see his sharp cheek bones colored with dark red, his light green eyes that would look anywhere but at her, his black hair still being thrown around in the wind making him seem as though he had a black halo around his head, his skin was unmarked and the color of her walnut dresser she had used to cover the window in her bedroom three days before, his jaw was clenched shut in embarrassment and it was sharp angles that made his face look more rectangular, in his neck she could see a couple of veins standing out, she admired the slope down to his well muscled shoulders. The shovel rested on his shoulder, covered in dry blood. He was handsome, but intimidating. His green eyes were piercing and haunted as if he'd seen a lot of horrible stuff, but his future held worse.

"We're here." His voice was like silk.

She sucked in a breath. He had broken the silence. His voice had made her heart leap into her throat. She had forgotten that people could talk.

He moved to the other side of the truck unblocking her view again. The chain link fence came into view.

The boy jumped out of the truck and unlocked the gate. He pushed it open with his muscular arms, his veins pushing out. The gates swung open until they hit the rest of the chain link fence. He picked up his shovel and then waved the truck through.

Monsters swarmed outside the fence, trying to find a way in. Smashing the fence, leaving large pieces of flesh behind hanging on the fence and billowing in the wind.

Out of the cab jumped another burly man, this one wielding a 2x4.

But all of that was in the back of Zales mind as the building fell into view. It was a large brick structure, two stories high. Metal was in front of every window, to keep the monsters out. The windows were old and warped and not a single soul looked out the windows. A giant garage door slowly crawled open, revealing survivors inside. The deep red brick held the structure in place, keeping everyone safe.

Zales closed her eyes, her heart beat raced. The silence was finally going to stop.

...

Zales opened her eyes, her tired eyes looked up to see a figure towering over her. It was a man, older than the boy that was next to her in the truck. They had similar features, but were wildly different.

His smile was warm and inviting, Zales wasn't used to such a friendly gesture. For the past three days the only Zales had seen were depressing and grotesque sights of death and destruction. Her world had been torn apart, but this broad smile showed hope.

"Hi." She whispered, her voice was quiet, but hopeful. Zales let her eyes trace over him.

He was tall, a little over six foot, and his dark brown eyes were framed by long lashes and dark brows.

The stranger held out his hand.

"Hey, I'm Jared." Zales put her hand in his, his walnut skin complemented her beige well. Jared had a military hair cut and dimples. He was beautiful, his rippling muscles were barely contained in his tight black T-shirt.

He pulled her to her feet, she was amazed how well he could do that from the side of the truck.

Her arms felt heavy, she looked down. Her arms were laden with plastic grocery bags filled with tons and tons of food. She had forgotten that her mother had made her carry everything so she could fight the madness.

He let go of her hand. Zales snapped out of it just then. She looked around, still slightly bewildered. There were tons of things lying around the bed of the truck: food, medical supplies, and home made weapons. Lots of people were helping to unload the truck, however the boy that saved her was nowhere to be found. Two men in particular stood out, they were a little older than Zales, but they seemed off. One looked plain with blonde hair, brown eyes, with pale, freckle covered skin. His hair line was slightly receding. The other was pale and bulky with a black mohawk and tattoos running up his arms. His eyes were blue and his teeth yellow.

Zales continued looking until she was taken in by those brown eyes again. His strong arms were outstretched.

"Huh?" Zales said, looking down at him.

"Come here..." He told Zales, that smile still on his face.

She obeyed and once she got to Jared his hands grabbed a hold of her waist. Zales took in a sharp breath, the warmth of his hands came as a shock.

Jared lifted Zales out of the truck, as gently as possible, setting her down with great care. Jared took half of her bags, trying to lighten the load.

Xavier shoved his shoulder ruffly against the gate putting it back in place.

The metal squeaked and slowly moved back into place before those flesh eating monsters could make it past the gates.

Another gunshot went off. The closest creature fell to the ground finally put out of its misery. He shook his head, the girl that he had saved stayed on his mind. She was all he could think about, her gray eyes and red hair stained all of Xavier's thoughts. Shen was silent and trembling the entire ride, even when he had landed on her lap, all she did was look up. Not a sound, just like those creatures. It scared Xavier that the one who had broken the silence had fallen into a similar quiet abyss. Xavier knew that the girl hadn't realized it, but she had tears rolling down her cheeks for the majority of the ride. It struck him as odd, but in her Xavier had seen hope. And even though it was a burden and she was a stranger, Xavier decided to put his hope in this girl. Having decided this Xavier went back inside the factory, to make sure that the supplies went where they were needed.

Her gray eyes were haunting him. The emptiness behind glass is what he thought about, her eyes were so sad and so empty and glass like. She seemed so broken. Her eyes reminded him of his own haunted gaze he sees in the mirror.

"Xavier!" It was his brother.

Xavier looked around to find Jared and that girl. Xavier headed towards them.

"Hey, what are you guys up to?"

"Well, I was going to give Zales a tour of the factory, but I need to go and hand out supplies."

"I'll do it, your names Zales?"

"Zalea, but I prefer Zales."

"Well then, I'll show you around."

...

Xavier lead Zales down a hallway. For some reason his heart was in his throat, his palms were sweaty, his pulse raced.

"Every room has been filled with a family or two. Right now they are off getting their share of supplies, the biggest family goes first and the smallest family goes last. There are a total of eight families that reside here. First are the Burnsides with fourteen family members, then the Gilmans with five, the Poffs have four, and then there's the Smiths and the Ofelen, both have three members, the Colvier's have two, and then there's the Friis-Jared and I, last there's Patrick and Eric who aren't family, but they're close enough."

"The Friis?"

"Yeah, Jared and I are brothers, he's the older one."

"What do you guys do?"

"Well, we survive, everyone here has a job. Jared and Bryce run this place. Patrick and I guard the gates. Analisse, Brooklynn, and Aubrey take care of the kids. Ryan, Eli, and Ben are mechanics. Eric, Aiden, and Owen keep the electricity going. Rustin, Jessica, Tiffany, and Avery keep the place clean. Luke, Connor, and Hannah make sure that the water runs. You'll have a job too, once you get settled in...Well that is, if you'd like to stay."

Xavier looked down at Zales in the hope that she'd say yes. A look of relief passed over her face.

"I'd like that, and I think I have a job in mind."

"Yeah? What job would you like?"

"Well, my Dad's a doctor. I'm not sure where he is now, but he's been training me to be a doctor since I was thirteen. I don't know everything, but I know enough, and I noticed that you guys picked up some medical supplies. I can help."

"That'd be perfect. Everyone helps out in the hospital when they need to, but no one really knows about medical stuff. We need a doctor."

"Okay, well where do you want me to stay?"

"I can't say a specific place. The families here will have to volunteer themselves for your well being. The families here will have to make room for you in their rooms but fair warning they won't like this. None of them are really giving. They are very selfish. I will be surprised if any of them volunteer themselves for you."

"Oh."

"Don't worry. You won't be thrown out on your own. If no one will step forward you will stay with Jared and I."

She looked at him. He could see hope behind the delicate gray glass.

"They will be mean and ruthless about any sort of feelings. Don't let them get to you-show them that you're fearless, completely composed. Show them that their words have no effect on you. You are very pretty and they will basically rip you apart for that very fact. Shoe them that you are the boss." Jared's voice floated down the hallway.

Xavier and Zales turned around, Jared was walking straight towards them.

"Another word of advice do not speak until I tell you to. Also keep in mind all the skills you can offer us." Jared said placing his hand on her shoulder. "They are all ready for her." Jared said staring at Xavier.

Xavier nodded and took Zales tiny hand into his own. Then led her down the rest of the hallway with Jared right on their heels.

Xavier opened the door at the end of the hallway.

Every word was loud, the voices muddled together. Zales tried to ready herself for the horror to come.

"Slut!"

"Filth"

"Why should I care?"

"Let her die!"

"We can't afford her!"

The angry voices grew louder as Zales walked onto the stage. Every insult fired at her like darts, but she had to swallow her emotions. Zales held her head high. Her eyes stung with the threat of tears, but crying meant dying. Zales couldn't afford to let her emotions out.

"Worthless!"

"Stupid Girl!"

"Leave while you can!"

The words were snarled across the room, thrown at her with fury. But Zales hadn't done anything wrong. Jared stepped forward and the crowd went silence.

"This is Zales, and I want you all to give her a chance. Life is precious and hard to find. There will be no throwing her out of here! Listen to her and remember that everyone of you were, at one time, at the mercy of my brother and I. Now Zales tell them about yourself."

Zales stepped forward, scared but unwilling to show it.

"I'm eighteen years old and an expert in the medical field. My dad was a doctor, and her showed me everything he knew. I have been trained in hand to hand combat. I can speak three different languages. I was the fastest on my high school track team. I've been cooking since I was six, and I'm pretty good at it."

Zales fell silent, hoping her voice didn't waiver when she launched the words towards the crowd.

The entire place was absolutely silent. Everyone stared at her, some glared, others sized her up as if contemplating if she was worth it.

She caught a glimpse of the two men from earlier leering at her.

"Is she capable of supply runs?" A voice sang through the crowd.

"I believe so." Jared answered for Zales.

She stared, completely still, completely composed, if none of them wanted her she'd always have a place with Jared and Xavier.

"Would she be counted?" The same detached voice asked. Zales found him in the crowd. He had caramel brown hair that fell into his hazel eyes. He was young, but strong.

"After her first supply run." Jared answered.

"We'll take her." The boy said.

"Okay she will meet the rest of the Ofelen in half an hour. This meeting is adjourned, go back to your duties."

Everyone exited the room, while Jared took Zales aside.

"Alright Zales you have been taken in by the Ofelen. They are orphans, all of them. There are three members, Layla who's five, Thomas who's ten, and Eli, the oldest, is fourteen. Most likely they took you in because you're eighteen."

"What does it mean to be counted?"

"Well if you're eighteen you can vote on what happens here, I get the final say, but I consider the votes. You can also go on supply runs if you're eighteen. Once you go on your first supply run, your vote can be counted."

"Oh."

"Yeah, so the room the Ofelen occupy is just down the hall, I'll show you."

Zales followed Jared to the second door on the right. He knocked the door opened to reveal a five year old girl with dirty blonde hair and pale green eyes.

"Hi! Who are you?"

"Layla, this is Zales she's part of our family now." Said Eli.

"Well come inside then silly!"

Zales entered the room and after waving to Jared, closed the door. Zales looked around. Sheets hung from the ceiling, portioning the small room, to even smaller individual areas.

"Let me show you my room." Layla said, pulling on Zale's arm.

"Wait Layla, Zales and I need to talk first, go sit in your room." Eli said, shooting Layla a stern look.

"Okay." Layla said with a sigh.

Eli then looked at Zales. "Listen Zales, don't get comfortable here we're not family. The only reasons for you being here are supply runs and counting other then that all you do is sleep here. Got it?"

Zales grit her teeth and nodded her head yes. Eli handed her some sheets and pointed Zales to her bed.

Xavier re-positioned the large box in his arms once again. He couldn't even guess what could possibly be in this box. The other boxes weren't as heavy as this one. He set it down and looked over to see Zales sitting there giving Xavier a look of bewilderment.

"Xavier, why so much wart cream?" Zales asked, Xavier chuckled.

"What?"

"Well, look at this, there has to be at least twenty bottles of this stuff. What the heck?" Zales dug even deeper into the the box. "Ketchup? I thought these were medical supplies..."

"Ketchup? Wart remover? I don't know what to tell you, except that Eric was the one in charge of getting the medical supplies."

"Does he have recurring warts or something? Because I think this would last most people a few lifetimes."

Xavier laughed again, it felt good. He hadn't laughed for a long time, and he loved that she could do that. She made him laugh. Thinking about it just made him smile. Zales smiled back.

"So... what's in that box?" Zales asked.

"Not sure, care to do the honors?" Xavier said, handing her his pocket knife.

"Alright." Zales cut the tape. She opened the box with Xavier helping.

"Uh... Why, just why?" Zales said.

Xavier stood there not sure what to do.

"Uh... I'm going to get another, um, box..." He walked out swiftly, trying to get away from the awkwardness in the make shift hospital. Condoms? Why on earth did Eric get a box and stuff it with nothing but condoms. There were still a couple of boxes to unload, Xavier hoped that was the only weird box. He carried the next box back to the hospital.

"Xavier do you understand this?"

"What?"

"Well, I just don't understand, wouldn't you want to reproduce? You near the end of the human race and all?"

"Uh..."

"This is awkward for you, isn't it?"

Xavier cleared his throat and walked away to get the last box. And to avoid Zales, it was just too awkward.

Xavier picked up the last box.

"Hey, dude, your face is red."

Xavier looked up from the box. Eric stood next to a rather skinny box. Xavier narrowed his eyes and felt his cheeks got hotter.

"Having a party no one else knew about?!"

Xavier seethed towards Eric. Xavier walked away from Eric and back to Zales.

"Hey, ran into Eric back there, talk about strange."

"Want to know what's strange?"

"Not sure I do..."

"Well, I was just wondering what on earth Eric's preparing for."

"Huh?" Xavier looked and saw birth control in one of Zales' hands and athletes foot cream in the other. "What on earth?"

"That's what I'm saying. Birth control, athletes foot cream, condoms, wart remover, and ketchup. What does Eric do in his spare time?"

Xavier blinked, how could she be so calm about opening a box full of condoms right in front of him. He couldn't help but chuckle, she looked so comical waving the box of birth control at the bottle of ketchup.

"...Am I right?"

Zales had turned to him still clutching the box.

"Uhhhh...yes?"

Zales laughed, "You have no idea what I just said do you?"

"Oh, no. Not at all."

Xavier leaned forward setting his hands on the mahogany desk.

"Well, basically I was just saying that guys have a very weird perception of fun."

Xavier laughed.

"Not all of us, let me show you what I think is fun."

He extended his hand out towards Zales.

"What?"

"Take my hand."

"Okay..." Zales took his hand, a bit nervously. Xavier pulled Zales to her feet and put one hand on her waist. Xavier began to lead Zales in a two step dance. He stumbled over a box. Zales chuckled.

"Sorry, it's been a while."

"That's fine, I haven't danced in a while either, especially without music."

"Well, I guess you could say that we're dancing to the beat of our hearts." Xavier chuckled, Zales laughed.

"You could, if you wanted to be completely cheesy."

"Well, you know what they say."

"It's not easy being cheesy."

They both laughed, hard. Zales fell over one of the boxes, spilling out tons of packing peanuts. This made Xavier laugh even harder, to the point where he was bent over clutching his sides.

"Hey!" Zales exclaimed as she threw one of the peanuts at Xavier's head. Xavier laughed even harder, falling over the box of condoms. Zales giggled.

"I'll get you back." Xavier said as he threw a condom at Zales. Determination flashed across her features.

"Oh, it's on." She said.

"Like Donkey Kong."

And thus the war ensued. Condoms and packing peanuts were flying across the room as Zales and Xavier tried to cover themselves with their cardboard boxes. Rolling and running across the room for different angles.

Zales was on the desk while Xavier was hurling a handful of condoms, when the door opened. The packing peanut-condom war stopped, the last few condoms falling down on Zales. Xavier and Zales looked at each other before looking back at the figure standing in the door way.

"Uhhhh..." Zales muttered.
